Hi Craig, some of the protected pages will "unlock" after you have been editing here a few days (I think its 4). (John User:Jwy talk) 15:10, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Citations and website URLs[edit]

Craig,

First, thanks for all your Beatles material!

You asked a general question on the Talk:Something page that I thought I would answer here to make sure you saw it. To edit citations, you do not edit the "Notes" or "References" section where the citation appears. The citation is added to the text it supports using a special code. So, for example, an article might have this text:

Craig Cross said that it was on 8 November 1969.<ref>(citation details here)</ref>

So, to correct the URLs that are wrong, you edit the body of the article, not the citation section. Citations can get complex, especially when the citation is used more than once on the same page. If you have any questions, post something on my talk page. I am not actively editing these days but I do check-in about once a day.

P.S. A while back I saw that many of the citations to your site were broken. I bought your book and then converted some of the broken links to point to the book.

P.P.S. Regarding conflict of interest concerns, I am no expert, but if you fix a URL (rather than introduce a new one) then I think it's fine. Another unbiased editor has already indicated the source is appropriate. If you were to add citations, well, I'd love to see it but it may be a conflict of interest according to WikiPedia rules...

hi john thanks for your help, it's much appreciated. i've got it all sussed out now. they don't have to worry about me spamming wikipedia with lots of links -- i only want to fix the ones that are already there (...it looks like they've been dead for about two years now. that show's what a lousy link spammer i am!)
