Coral Springs

It looks like we're both working on this at the same time, so I'll back off, as you are making fantastic progress filling out the article. However, there is one fact that is a bit scrambled in the history section. When discussing the plan for a community of 50,000 people, your wording is a bit off, because it implies that the plan was for a city of 50,000 in 1964, not that the plan was developed in 1964. (grin) The city didn't top 50,000 until 1983. There was a big article in the Coral Springs Forum when that occurred. Horologium t-c 03:35, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Actually, I don't have any pictures, as I moved away from Coral Springs in 1986, shortly after I graduated. My father still lives in Broward County, but he doesn't have a camera (digital or otherwise) to create some. And I see you nicely reworded the section in question. For the history of the city, make sure to take a look at the city history .PDF on the city's website. It's pretty comprehensive, although it doesn't cover the present or immediate past. BTW, you might want to make note of the fact that the Covered Bridge is the only covered bridge on a public right-of-way in the entire state. (That is mentioned in the history, and there is a not-so-clear picture of the historical marker next to the bridge. The text of that marker might be an interesting factoid; A picture of the marker with the text legible could make a nice addition to the article. You also might want to mention the city's blue-chip bond ratings, and the two Sterling Award wins; the city has been extremely well-run over the years. Horologium t-c 04:27, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

(Outdent)You have referenced that FIU and BCC have established programs with one of the charter schools for college credit. With which school or schools are they affiliated? A reference would be a good thing for that.

Same thing with the four water providers; I couldn't find a lot of documentation about the issue, although I didn't do much digging. When I last lived in the city, there was only one water service, the one operated by the city, although the city was half the size it is now.

I'm going to move all of the schools to a list page, where we can arrange them and include the information about the three Parkland schools. The Manual of Style prefers prose instead of long lists of links, and that list is a bit unwieldy. I'll leave the introductory paragaphs in place, though; they are informative. I went through and did a big copy-edit on the whole article, and reworded and massively sourced the introduction. This article has gone from seriously undersourced to extremely well-sourced over the past three days. The history section still needs some work; it seems to drop off rather abruptly after 1965, which is when development of the city actually started. (The first non-Coral Ridge Properties employee resident moved in in 1965.) Outside of that, the article looks fairly decent, although there are a lot of redlinks to build up. I think that the peer reviews you have requested will give this article a decent rating, considering it is currently rated as a stub.

I noticed your tendency to slightly overuse articles ("the", in particular); are you Filipino, by any chance? And trust me, your English is a lot better than that of some of the alleged native speakers of the language. (grin) Horologium t-c 05:03, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

I guess my worst area is the in-at-the-an part :-).Writing articles is a good way to learn. I removed Paul Vance, mostly because it would be very hard to be maintaining famous residents (the others are all natives) and they are not that famous either. What do you think?

(outdent)Heh. I checked my watchlist after spending an hour or two severely copy-editing the piece. It appears we both had a few misgivings about the location of the city ordinances, but we came up with different ideas on where to move them. I went and moved it into the city history section, because the stringent ordinances were set up under the guidance of Coral Ridge Properties. Without their input, it is quite possible that they never would have been enacted. I also restructured the article to more closely conform to the template suggested at Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities,and provided a few more links to beef up the lighter sections of the article. Cool for me:-) Now I think you definitely are the man to take this on - I do not think I can take it up to the next level without some help on the writing part.

Besides that, on the WP:GA list...

1. well, you can say that better than me. We have all the recommended sections, AFAIK. 2. I think we pass this with flying colors. 3. I think we are fairly there. Maybe reduce a bit on the lead section regarding the history of Coral Ridge properties, and outline how big/rich/poor the city is comparing to the others in the state. Maybe a little less factual data. But that's me :-) 4. There's not much to discuss. 5. it probably will be stable after this huge overhaul. 6. I think we are ok with the images, since CS does not have many focal points. Maybe once the one charter place gets done, or a drawing of the final product... Maybe add one to the history section, the Johnny Carson on the stage? Or that one from 1978?

On another note, there are only three redlinks, for the three elected politicians. I added stubs for Broward County Transit and for Paraíso, Costa Rica. Besides that, I think that the only thing that can be added is that the CS forum is published since 1971 and was acquired by the Sun Sentinel and all the middle and elementary schools got an A in 2006, while the HS got a B. Ramblewood Elementary got a Sterling award this year.

Let's go for a grade "A" :-)

Do you have a cite for the school grades (rather than individual links to each of them, which would be quite unwieldy)? Coral Springs had a reputation for outstanding schools for many years, which was one of the factors that led to its rapid growth. (I don't have a cite for that statement, so it would qualify as WP:OR, even though it's true). I knew about Ramblewood Elementary's Stirling Award, and Coral Springs Charter School's run of A ratings, but I haven't checked on the other 20-something public, private, and charter schools in the city. You said "the" high school got a B. Which one? There's three of them...

In the past, I had looked for data to work up a stub for the Forum, but I was not able to come up with enough to create an article that would survive an AfD. It's simply another local weekly paper, not terribly notable and not easy to find in Google. The odd thing is that the Sun-Sentinel is owned by the Tribune Company, but I cannot find any mention of the Forum at the Tribune Media website. (They don't have information on their weeklies, only for their larger properties.) As to the other local paper, I am not at all familiar with it; it probably started up after I left the area. For the politicians, I'm hlaf-tempted to delink all of the State reps and senators, even the one who has an article. They're not really notable, and I know that I, for one, am not going to expend the time and effort to create articles on them, when they could be nominated for AfD at any time. (Nelson and Martinez, OTOH, should remain linked; they are unquestionably notable.)

I added the stuff on CRP in the lede to comply with the guidelines on Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities, where it is recommended that the lede briefly address the origins of the city. I avoided mentioning how wonderful the city is because I was being mindful of WP:Peacock, which recommends letting the sourced details explain why the city is special, rather than use empty superlatives and filler. About the link to the politicians... well, if the articles are there, I think we can keep them. I will be watching all the articles linked from CS.

I like explaining that the city was built by CRP, but I would keep the explanation of what the heck happened to them for the history part. Another thing that I think makes some sense is that the city took their name from the company. Just my .02. Another grip I had is that maybe it is not necessary to say that the Census got the pop number, since it is referenced. As you can see, I am trying to keep the lead straight to the point :-). I like the tone of the entire article, though. Even being overwhelmingly positive, there is not much to complain in factual terms. The only things that can be said is that there is a 108% school overcrowding and that the police is projecting a slightly bigger crime rate for 2k7. The first may be not significant, since I do not know how good/bad it is in other cities and the crime spike is small and not an RS (in this particular case).

I searched the news for some criticism, and came back with the nothing. The only person who is really vocal against the city looks to be the owner of coralsprings.com.

A couple of interesting links: some photos that can be used WCi buying Bay that bought CR properties good for sourcing.

I hope nobody disputes the "distinctive" on the lead.

I pared out the information about Westinghouse, because I never did work in the Electra Lab angle (Westinghouse bought CRP in order to build electric showplace homes; two of those houses were built in Electra Lab, near the charter school; the third and final one was built in Kenilworth, in the Ramblewood subdivision.) I think we need to maintain the reference to WCI because there is no article on CRP, but there is one for WCI.

Every article I have seen uses the verbose citation about US Census data, even if there is a link to a census page; I kept it because it's consistent.

The crime rate is FAR below the norm for Broward County or Florida; of the nine cities with lower crime rates in that Morgan Quitno report, only three of them are more populous than Coral Springs. Since crime dropped 17% over the last year, a small spike is not going to make much of a difference. As for the school overcrowding, CSHS has about 2400 students this year; when I was a senior in 1986, we had 2751, so crowding is not too bad. As for coralsprings.com, the guy who runs it is a crank, and that site is not updated very often. (Take a look at the dates on the "articles" on the front page.)

I don't think we will be able to use those photos, because there is no clear copyright info on them, and they are not irreplaceable photos.

I worry a bit about "distinctive", but it's less of a peacock word than "Unique", which is what it replaced. (!) Horologium t-c 05:16, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Actually, I'm been tweaking Fort Lauderdale, Florida as well. (I've actually done more work on that article than I had on Coral Springs, because there was more article with which to work, and more people who at least occasionally contributed.) Fort Lauderdale needs a stub for William Cooley, and some cleaning out of chaff before I submit it for a reassessment. There are two broken links that I have asked the contributor to fix (the same guy who added the language links to Coral Springs), and way too many sites of interest. I am probably going to create a list of museums and link it in to the main article, like I did with the schools in Coral Springs.

I've also been going through the Regions of Florida section and adjusting some of them; some people have the strangest ideas about which cities belong in each region... (grin) If you want to work on more Florida-related stuff, join Wikipedia:WikiProject Florida, which can always use active editors. There is one glaring error--Cooley Hammock is in Fort Lauderdale, not 30 miles south of Jacksonville as indicated in the "arrival in Florida" section. Did something get scrambled during transcription?

OK, I went through and did a big copy-edit. I removed a couple of sections where the sentence structure didn't make sense, or where there was no reference. I also changed the date of birth/date of death parenthetical (Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)#Dates of birth and death specifically states to incorporate places into the biographical portion of the article. I added four categories (Category:American pioneers, Category:People of the Seminole Wars, Category:Florida politicians and Category:Fort Lauderdale, Florida). At least the lead is getting bigger:-). Look, I got an email from a descendant of William Cooley - she is telling me that his daughter from a previous marriage was in the New River settlement. It is true she was called Cooley before getting married and she is in Monroe County in 1830. The sources look to be a Tampa newspaper and the Territorial Papers of Florida. Unfortunately I could not find anything online. Maybe I will stop by a library this week. As for you question...hmmm. Definitely not 170 miles. I'd go with the hyphenated version, as it is an adjective in this case, modifying the subject (corridor), and both parts are needed, indicating a compound word of sorts. Your article is a really great first effort. GA is a big deal and FA is even a bigger deal and more or less the end goal of an article. To move it past GA and FA, it is likely that you will need to use information from the one to three top sources on William Cooley (which probably means a trip to the library to grab a book or two). There are some basic things missing from your article. I would suggest running through the WikiProject Biography 11 easy steps to producing at least a B article to ensure you have the remaining few things that usually are part of a B biography article and as a good way to teach yourself how to develop a Wikipedia biography article. I would also reformat your footnotes to be more consistent with one at Wikipedia:Footnotes. There are many styles. I like to use Last, First. (date) [[Source]] ''[URL|URL title.]'' Section; Page. (Obtained date). Part of the GA and FA process may involve reducing and rearranging the article. Thus, at the B level, you want to include as much as you believe reasonable in the article so that it may be arranged and reduced. It is much easier to remove material from an article then to conceive of adding it in the first place. At the B level, I also would suggest putting a footnote after each sentence (except for the lead paragraph) so that others know where the information came from. Once you do all this, I would suggest revising the article to meet Wikipedia:What is a good article?. Once you think you have a GA article, you may want to compare it with a few U.S. pioneer articles at Wikipedia:Featured articles and incorporate what you learn from the style of those articles into your own. History of Fort Lauderdale

Notability of Jim Naugle

I've already left a note on his page squawking about the tag, but this is one of the reasons why using the preview function and adding more with each edit is a good idea. It's better to edit in chunks, using the "preview" function to check your work, than to add a sentence or two for each save. I'm an admin, I examined the situation, I checked the article history, and I judge that - in this case - Finngall was in error. I've left him a helpful note. (ROFL) I can be particularly single-minded (take a look at all of the smaller markets in List of radio stations in Florida, and look at the edit history), so I never find fault with those who go to the extra lengths necessary to do something right.

On a related note, between the immediate CSD tagging of Jim Naugle, the immediate (uncited) tagging of Twistee Treat, which Cary Bass had just created, and the relatively quick (uncited) tagging of the famous residents list yesterday, it appears that the tag-and-run twits are out in full force. Yeah, the dichotomy between his party affiliation and his actual views tends to irk the journalistic community in the area, and his attacks on the Sun-Sentinel haven't helped him much in the press. He's still popular with the voters, though, as his six electoral victories have shown. There are a couple of sources that you use that might not be terribly appropriate in that article; the second reference is a blog, and the seventh reference, while hosted on the Sun-Sentinel site, doesn't appear to be something written by the paper. It might be something from the Lifestyle section, or one of the paper's in-house blogs, but I don't think it's appropriate to cite a section entitled "Our mayors don't try to hide what scumbags they truly are" as a valid reference. The sources are valid, though. The blogs are hosted on Sun-Sentinel and New Times by staff members, and there is no criticism, just the factual part. The New Times' link is pretty good - it is a three-page interview full of facts. Golden Globes list

I noticed a handful of things:

• You should not try too hard hard to "shove" your global references into footnotes, as it obscures their status. It's fine to have them as a list.
• The new list has no categories (oops!)
• You'll need some footnotes for the years without nominees etc.
• The 1953-1958 entry should be "No award given.", not "Awards not given." for consistency.
• I'm not convinced you should list Oliver! Maybe the footnote should be placed at the year: "Oliver! was on the original ballot, but was declared ineligible." or something such.
• Also, there shouldn't be space before <ref> tags and punctuation.

re (1) What I like to do is something like the bottom of The Lady with a Fan (Velázquez) with "specific references" used as notes and "general references" for stuff not in notes.

Re (3) I don't see the problem. That would cover only 1947, 48 and 59...

Well, I am all against double Wikilinks, but I was thinking about this situation: you go to a specific year, you find "Elia kazan", but he is wikilinked before: then, or you go back to find the link, or you have to google him... I do not think it is very comfortable...what do you think? and... I changed the "external links" to "general references". Ed Bruce

Thanks for asking me to look at the Ed Bruce article. I am currently very wrapped up with some stuff for the Smithsonian right now and have not been able to look at many wikipedia articles. I do like the fact that you put his discography on a subpage as it will give for easier reading. Ed's background and full discography is complex as his career has had so many ups and downs. When his career is up, it is really up and it is hard to manage his discography charting because of the multitude of charts available. I think if we were to submit this for article review, we would want to only go by Billboard charts. They are the most reliable and easiest to cite. As soon as I can get a few minutes free I will go in and see what I can do to work on this with you. I think you did a very nice job so far. I would just need to check the validity of some of them. I did the expansion on Coral Springs, Florida. It's only a couple of paragraphs, but I actually sourced the additions, with bona fide reliable sources (US Census Bureau and US Geological Survey), so the article should qualify for "A" class (although I'm not sure that I would push for that; it actually has less visibility than a GA). I'm considering sending it up for FA status, although I am not sure if it will stand up to the meat-grinder of FA review, which is a lot worse than GA review or Featured List review. While the sources are good enough for GA, they might not qualify for an FA, because so much of it is published by the city itself. Horologium t-c 14:33, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

The only things I can think of are that some of the language ("taking his side", for example) might be questioned. However, i should rush to point out that I have yet to be involved in very many FA discussions, so your guess is probably as good as mine. FL Main page proposal

You either nominated a WP:FLC or closed such a nomination recently. As such, you are the type of editor whose opinion I am soliciting. We now have over 400 featured lists and seem to be promoting in excess of 30 per month of late (41 in August and 42 in September). When Today's featured article (TFA) started (2004-02-22), they only had about 200 featured articles and were barely promoting 20 new ones per month. I think the quality of featured lists is at least as good as the quality of featured articles was when they started appearing on the main page. Thus, I am ready to open debate on a proposal to institute a List of the Day on the main page with nominations starting November 1 2007, voting starting December 1 2007 and main page appearances starting January 1 2008. For brevity, the proposal page does not discuss the details of eventual main page content, but since the work has already been done, you should consider this proposal assuming the eventual content will resemble the current content at the featured content page. Such output would probably start at the bottom of the main page. The proposal page does not debate whether starting with weekly list main page entries would be better than daily entries. However, I suspect persons in favor of weekly lists are really voicing opinions against lists on the main page since neither TFA nor Picture of the day started as weekly endeavors, to the best of my knowledge. Right now debate seems to be among support for the current selective democratic/consensus based proposal, a selective dictatorial approach like that used at WP:TFA or a non-selective first in line/calendar approach like that used at WP:POTD. I am contacting individuals in the order of the number of featured lists that they had created by Novemeber 10, 2007. You have created several. So you are among the first. Personally, I would add small write-ups with more detail about the symbol itself (i.e., a version of the first paragraph from each individual symbol), and/or detail on why/how they were chosen. I like to make lists sortable/colorful and adding a little write-up for each section is something I think enriches the list as well. Btw, happy TG!

Please note that a lot of these articles were created by me, & the link to Arthur Clarke Fansite was simply a form of acknowledgment - that I was the author. Even where I am not the original creator, there are often major contributions by me on several articles.

I maintain that site as a hobby, & mostly to avoid massive edits by others if I were to write story summaries at Wikipedia.

I have deleted them again. Please review the policies and guidelines linked to directly and indirectly on the message I left on the Tinktoo talk page. Links to fansite reviews are inherently spam, particularly fansites created by the person inserting the links. Even links to the Arthur C Clarke Foundation are not really appropriate for individual short stories written by Clarke - perhaps on his main bio page and/or the article about the foundation. You (Tinktoo) added inappropriate links to 20-30 articles. Given that 90-100% of the material is inappropriate there is no way I am going to review each one to see if there is any salvageable content. I know you're just trying to help the encyclopedia. But in the future, if you face strong opposition to any of your edits on Wikipedia could you please first take some time to review policies and guidelines to see if you might be wrong before turning this into a contest of will with another editor? Chita

Hello,

I appreciate the valuable work you do for Wikipedia, but I have a question regarding the 'Chita, Russia' page. I lived in Chita for sixteen months, wrote about it and placed my musings online (not for commercial purposes but for anyone to read). For months I linked this to the 'Chita, Russia' and 'Siberia' pages on Wikipedia and received tens of hits from those sources every week, plus some positive guestbook feedback. I chose to link (only) from Wikipedia because I reasoned that those seeking knowledge about Chita and Siberia would be among those who would most value my writings.

Recently, links to both have been removed, so I edited them back in, only to see them removed for being 'Too narrow in scope'. Disappointing as this is, I can accept that writing about life in Chita may be too narrow for the 'Siberia' page, but how is it too narrow for a page about Chita? So many people ask me what it was like to live in Siberia, which is one of the reasons I put up my site, and I'm sure many visitors to these two pages would find my content interesting. I don't profit personally from visitors. Can you explain why my site is not permitted as a link from Wikipedia please?

Hi James! Please do not take it personally. The guidelines in WP:EL disencourage linking to "to blogs and personal web pages, except those written by a recognized authority" and "sites that does not provide a unique resource beyond what the article would contain if it became a Featured article". Although your account is perfectly enjoyable and an interesting read, the link fails the two conditions mentioned and talk about only a little part of all the aspects that should be covered in an article about Chita/Siberia. Thanks for your considered responses. I appreciate why my link was removed from the Siberia page but, regarding the 'Chita, Russia' page would disagree that my site does not meet the condition "sites that does not provide a unique resource beyond what the article would contain if it became a Featured article". Surely many Wikipedia users visit the Chita page in order to seek information about the city: I would argue that my book provides this in abundance, arguably beyond what a 'Featured article' may be able to encompass. I appreciate the work you both do and remain a huge fan of Wikipedia. Of course, I would like to see the link restored for personal reasons but I also strongly believe that the quantity and quality of information I placed into my book- ie virtually everything I had gleaned about Chita whilst living there for sixteen months- is a resource which would be appreciated by Wikipedia users and, I hope, encourage people to develop a more accurate view of Siberian life and perhaps even a desire to visit Chita.-- comment added by SiberianSpireite (talk)

Just thought you might be interested to see it got translated (more or less) into its first foreign language wiki. It looks like it may be up for deletion, although somebody is expanding the article. (I don't speak Russian, so I am not sure of the tag on top of the article.)

Speedy deletion of Image:Fort Lauderdale - Las Olas Blvd.jpg

A tag has been placed on Image:Fort Lauderdale - Las Olas Blvd.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only," "non-derivative use" or "used with permission," it has not been shown to comply with the limited standards for the use of non-free content. [3], and it was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19, or is not used in any articles. If you agree with the deletion, there is no need to do anything. If, however, you believe that this image may be retained on Wikipedia under one of the permitted conditions then:

• state clearly the source of the image. If it has been copied from elsewhere on the web you should provide links to: the image itself, the page which uses it and the page which contains the license conditions.
• add the relevant copyright tag.

Golden Globe Award for Best Director – Motion Picture

Hi Legionarius, I have been looking at ("sweeping", if you will) Featured lists that were promoted some time ago. I happened upon Golden Globe Award for Best Director – Motion Picture, and saw that while it is quite good, it does not quite meet current standards. Rather than immediately list the article for FLRC, I would prefer to hold an informal review on the article's talk page.
