Hi Lbockhorn. I also commented at WikiProject Medicine, but I thought I'd expand a bit here. The talk page of the article Social determinants of health indicates that article has serious problems. Indeed, someone has just proposed deleting the article, and someone else has suggested it should be kept but improved. I'd say you've turned up at just the right time.

• I understand. I will be making an article as soon as possible. I was not aware that was the policy for new articles. I was instructed to make a discussion page in class but have not yet been instructed to create the page. How elaborate does the page need to be to have the talk page up? I hope you have brought our policy on talk pages to the attention of your teacher. Goodness! You need instructions to create a page? Don't be silly, just go ahead and do it but do it in user:Lbockhorn/sandbox. If you do it there you don't need to worry about whether it is "elaborate" enough - you will have all the time you need to provide decent references, etc. However, I am very dubious about your choice of subject and your outline: I fear that it will be tagged for deletion as essay / original research and fork of the existing article. I have visited and read the page Social determinants of health many times, including the warnings, and because of those I would not like to simply extend on that page for many reasons.

I opt to create a new page rather than edit the existing page “Social Determinants in Health” for the following reasons:

1. That article has many tags for subpar content, including having multiple issues, being written like a personal reflection or essay rather than an encyclopedic description of the subject, disputed neutrality, a slanted tone, and the perspective provided deals primarily with Canada and does not represent a world view.

2. This article does not provide a specific approach to how poverty, low income, or low socioeconomic status greatly affects the health of people, and how even with those in poverty there is great disparity between health outcomes. Neglect of this fact provides readers with a limited scope of just how divisively health care disparities cut society, even within similar income classes within a country and across the world.

3. Finally, structural causes inherent in society are not clearly represented, and need to be to provide a clear picture to the public of how structural institutions and policy provide these health differentials between different groups of people, even within the lives of the impoverished.

I'd very much like to see what you come up with. As RHaworth suggests, though, regardless of what you initially call it, work on it on a page called user:Lbockhorn/something. That way, you won't be harrassed while you're working on it. Once it's done, if you think it should replace that mess at Social determinants of health, invite a few opinions - me, RHaworth, and a general invite at the medicine project would be good. (But please fully grasp WP:MEDRS and emulate the style of other med/psych articles as outlined at WP:MEDMOS.) Lbockhorn, thanks for discussing this. Here's what I think:

1. If you edit social determinants of health (SDoH), you are not obligated to clean up the various sections. Nothing here is compulsory. So don't feel like that entire article would become your responsiblity. Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "specific approach", but maybe my reply to #2 addresses that concern. I hope you don't mean a specific theoretical approach to the subject, as that sounds like something that is done more in an essay, and not in a neutral encyclopedia. Sometimes though it does make sense to narrow the approach to an article a bit, as is done at intelligent design, where the article starts of by saying "This article is about intelligent design as promulgated by the Discovery Institute."

2. Perhaps a good solution would be to write a poverty section at SDoH. I just created one:[1]. Maybe you could start your work there. When it becomes long enough, it could perhaps be split into the article you envision.

3. I'm not sure what you're saying you want to write, but a theoretical framework, or background information regarding SDoH could be discussed at another new section at SDoH you could start titled "Background".

In other words, there's no reason you can't put in good new sections into what is now an article with some poorly written sections. Are you somehow required to start a new article for a grade in a class? I hope my comments help. Some people say Wikipedia has too many people citing too many rules that discourage new editors, but I hope you don't take our comments that way. We'd like to see you make some great contributions. WHO images

Per page 2 of this document images from WHO documents are not in the public domain [2] I have written to the WHO previously and the person I contacted was not interested in making changes to this policy. Yes but we cannot infringe upon copyright. We need to work on the World Health Organization to convince them to release their content into the public domain or under a creative commons license that we can use. I have attempted without success. Do you have any contacts at WHO? Otherwise you will need to create charts and graphs from scratch. If you add them again, you will be temporarily blocked from editing and unable to continue work on your assignment. You can produce your own images based on the original data (e.g. in Excel), but if you do this, try not to make it look too similar to the original images. Thanks! I definitely do not intend to ruin your article or plagiarize. I have reviewed that material and I will review it again. Do you have any tips for me on how to present these straight forward facts in a less similar way to the material I drew my information from? I would appreciate any help. I have been editing this page for an assignment for my class Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities at Rice University, and only intend to make nutrition information more accessible. I apologize if any of my material has offended you. This is still a working project edit for me and I am happy to take any suggestions, collaborate, or change any inappropriate material. questions about revisions

I do not understand why you removed the information on minorities. I plan on expanding that section profoundly, but have only inserted a bit of information at this time due to other time commitments. However, do you see something inappropriate about that information? Also, child wasting is a technical term that signifies the degradation of bodily tissues due to severe malnourishment that is an indicator similar to stunting. May I please revert those edits? Deciding new structure

The organizational structure of malnutrition needs some more work I believe. Does the following structure provide a better combination of the previous article and the new social information that needs to be incorporated?
