Sam Houston State University

Hi Laurenlinn, I have now removed the seal image from Sam Houston State University as per your request on my Talk page and also tagged File:SHSU_seal.svg for deletion. Actually, the seal was used on Wikipedia under fair use (see WP:Logos). I guess it might be helpful if you mentioned somewhere on your user page or talk page that you are affiliated with the University so that your request is also considered authoritative by other editors. But then WP:COI needs to be kept in mind... I have no relation with SHSU, just spent a few minutes improving this article (replacing raster graphics with vector graphics) which I spotted by chance. kashmiri 22:52, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

SHSU Seal

Hello. I just wanted to open a dialog with you about the use of the SHSU seal on its corresponding page. While I appreciate that you're an official from the university, that, in itself, doesn't give you the right to dictate what does and doesn't end up on the page. While the seal might not be for official use within the confines of the university itself, Wikipedia is not an official arm of the university. I understand that SHSU's "web presence" might not include the seal, the Wikipedia page is not part of your officially designated "web presence" and, thus, it doesn't have to conform to internal ideals about what an SHSU web page should look like. If you look around, seals of the university are the most common and standard image to appear in their associated text boxes. Most universities also do not use the seal as their most prominent mark within their own websites. Again, that is an internal decision, and Wikipedia is not part of that framework in any way. As such, I would prefer to move the page back to that standard.

Also, I'm not sure it's appropriate to simply ask someone on their own talk page to do your bidding, "official" or not. If you have an issue with the web page as a whole, please bring it up on the web page's talk page.

Also, I'd like to add that there's nothing "unfortunate" about a "former student" (me) adding anything not "sanctioned by [your] Marketing department." Wikipedia is not under any obligation to the "Marketing department" of SHSU. Indeed, the fact that you're here, monitoring the page in this way, might represent a conflict of interest.

Unfortunately, the fact that the seal was on the WP article at all was not sanctioned by our Marketing department and was added by a former student.

Again, I would like to open a dialog with you rather than simply replacing the image, but that dialog will have to be in the context of Wikipedia standards, not what the "Marketing department" finds palpable for its own web pages. The "Marketing department" has no more say here than any other editor--in fact, the "Marketing department" should, by Wikipedia standards, have _less_ say. Hello Ommnomnomgulp- I really don't know much about wikipedia or what typical universities do on their pages. I see that you monitor quite a few university pages so feel free to add or remove seals as you see fit. As a newbie at WP, I asked Kashmiri for help and he complied. Apparently that was not the right move in your opinion and I've heard your advice. Thanks for your illuminating feedback on the matter. 17:57, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
