RfC: Notable

Is this article notable for inclusion in the main namespace. I recognize that a conflict of interest does exist here, but I feel that other people might agree that there has been enough of a significant amount of independent third party coverage to merit inclusion. Please give your position, or correct the article to be acceptable if there are problems with it's content and not the topic itself. The general question here is - Is the topic (me) notable? Subject is not notable + article is too self-serving

If this person is notable at all, it's for running for Mayor at a very young age. The rest is nowhere near the WP:Notability (people). He ran for mayor of a small town, pop. 22,719. Even small-town mayors typically aren't notable enough for Wikipedia, much less candidates.

This guy does sound like a mover and shaker, who knows, in 10 years he may be in the state legislature, and in 20 in Congress or the Governor's mansion. But for now, he does not rate an article.

By the way, if this were made into an article, the first thing I would do besides tag it for notability would be to greatly trim the text not related to his failed mayoral bid, as it's not encyclopedic for a marginally- or in this case insufficiently-notable person.

The size of the reference list is impressive, but alas most were either trivial or dealt with the election. Thank you for your comment David. In short what I read from your comment is that the topic may be notable, but the article contents are not all notable. Just for the reference of others, the wikipedia guideline for notability says:

A politician who has received "significant press coverage" has been written about, in depth, independently in multiple news feature articles, by journalists.

The discussion here should, by my guess, focus around whether or not that criteria is established. I would, of course, argue yes considering there are multiple articles almost completed focused on the subject in the Muscatine Journal, and the article from WQAD news was the top story that night. The issue is one of "significance," where significance != word count or citation count. The quarterback in a high school football team that won the state championship will likely get lots of statewide press and maybe some national press, but that doesn't make him notable. Even getting named to All-America teams may not make him notable. Likewise, the mere act of running a serious candidacy for mayor means he's getting quite a bit of press. Here are some things to look for: Non-routine articles from 3rd-party sources about him independent of what he does, or him doing something that is itself notable. If a newspaper does a 1/2-column bio on every serious mayoral candidate during the election, that generally doesn't count as significant. What I'm afraid of is if you create this article now, it will be nominated for deletion and be deleted as not notable. Ryan, I want to commend you on such an early, notable career. However, I believe that you need to keep in mind What Wikipedia is not. Wikipedia sets a high standard for its encyclopedic, featured articles on notable people, places, and things. Among those areas, Wikipedia lists Albert Einstein, Dubai, and space colonization. Although someone such as The Tron Guy is very "noteworthy", there are some editors who believe that even he does not deserve Wikipedia's standard of "notability"—yet. Keep up the good work, let someone else, in the future, write your achievements, and place your punctuation marks before the <ref></ref>, not after it. *grin* I see no problem, however, with keeping your article here in Userspace. Combination of WP:N and WP:COI

Never underestimate WP:COI - I would never edit an article about myself. If I ever wonder why I'm not in wikipedia, I consider the fact that if I was notable enough someone else would have added me (without me pointing that out to them - defacto sockpuppeting). In fact, knowing a couple of people who are mentioned in wikipedia, they tend to consider it a badge that someone else added them - and that it didn't get deleted. There are 6 billion other people in the world whose notability I can spend my time wondering about - and thousands of wikipedians who can spend their time (or not do so more likely) pondering my significance to the universe. Also, have a look at WP:BLP1E - the mayoral election being the only item in the article that appears to be an assertion of notability. Frankly though, the wikimaturity of posting to your userspace and RfCing the article is admirable. Usrnme h8er (talk) 10:48, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
