New Page Reviewer move of Black Sexual Politics to User:Keannml95/Black Sexual Politics[edit]

Hi Keannml95 (ping Shalor (Wiki Ed) for input). I've moved this page back to your userspace as I do not believe that it is in a state to be in mainspace as an article. The major issue is that it is written as an essay rather than a neutral and encyclopedic article, and I don't see that it can be trivially modified to make it so. (You also moved it to the wrong title -- from the dashboard it should have been Censorship on the Black Girl Experience, but that title also needs work). ^~Hydronium^~Hydroxide^~(Talk)~ 08:03, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Hydronium Hydroxide! Keannml95, I agree with HH as this follows more of a persuasive essay format and style than the format Wikipedia uses and prefers. I have some notes for you:

Avoid opinion terms, as these are seen as subjective to the person writing the piece and are inherently persuasive since the goal is to get the reader to see things in a specific light. Examples of these terms are words like great, perfect, and so on.
There is a lot of original research in the article, especially as we can't verify if anything directly came from the listed sources other than the quotes. Original research is considered to be anything that we would come up with on our own (research, claims, data) that is based on sourcing and/or personal experiences - but is not explicitly written in the sourcing itself. We can only summarize what has already been stated in sourcing. An example of how strict Wikipedia's policy is on this is that someone can describe something that sounds an awful lot like a cat in a source - however we cannot explicitly call it a cat based on the description, as it's possible that they could be describing a dog, fox, or even a fictional creature.

An example of original research can be the statement "most common forms of censorship used against Black Girls are through Dancing, Fashion, and their performance in the presence of the opposite sex", as this is stated as an absolute fact. It's not attributed to anyone or a specific source, which is very important with a blanket statement like this because it's something that's likely to be challenged. Another person could come in and say that more common forms are censorship of speech (written and verbal), social equality, and via the denial of political power. (Some can even argue that women in general but especially black women are censored with their own bodies by way of health and reproductive rights.) This can also change depending on the country as well, as later in the article you state that some of these things are not as commonly censored in other countries. The article has a lot of other things that can be seen as original research.

Be aware of scope. I'm not really sure if this is meant to cover specifically the US or take a global view. If it's the US, I'm not sure if this is meant to cover both women and girls or just girls, as the article mentions women but seems to focus specifically on black girls under the age of 18. I'd personally recommend focusing on black girls and women in the US since issues can differ greatly depending on the country and culture.
Be careful of sourcing. If this is limited to a specific group, you need to make sure that the sourcing specifically backs up claims and is about the group in question. The sourcing should also state which page of the source the claim can be found on as well, especially with controversial claims. Make sure that all claims or opinions are attributed to the source and avoid blanket statements without attribution, as there aren't many things out there that are really seen as universally applicable to every person without being heavily debated and contested.

Now all of this said, I think that this is a good topic. I don't think that any article covers this really heavily and offhand I'd wager that there are enough sources that deal specifically with this topic (like this one) to justify coverage somewhere. To be honest, something that actually needs coverage desperately is black women in the United States in specific. There's a general article for African Americans, but not one on black women in the US and there's definitely enough out there to where this topic would merit their own article - it just hasn't been written yet as far as I can tell. There's an article about Black women in general, but not specifically black women in the US. I think that a very good alternative would be to draft an article on black women in the United States and to have a section on censorship. What do you think?
