March GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors March 2019 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the March newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2018. All being well, we're planning to issue these quarterly in 2019, balancing the need to communicate widely with the avoidance of filling up talk pages. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below.

January Drive: Thanks to everyone for the splendid work in January's Backlog Elimination Drive. We removed copyedit tags from all of the articles tagged in our original target months of June, July and August 2018, and by 24 January we ran out of articles. After adding September, we finished the month with 8 target articles remaining and 842 left in the backlog. GOCE copyeditors also completed 48 requests for copyedit in January. Of the 31 people who signed up for this drive, 24 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Blitz: Thanks to everyone who participated in the February Blitz. Of the 15 people who signed up, 13 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed 32 copyedits, including 15 requests. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: As of 23:39, 18 March 2019 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have completed 108 requests since 1 January and the backlog stands at 851 articles.

March Drive: The month-long March drive is now underway; the target months are October and November 2018. Awards will be given to everyone who copyedits at least one article from the backlog. Sign up here!

Election reminder: It may only be March but don't forget our mid-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 June. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Miniapolis, Baffle gab1978, Jonesey95, Reidgreg and Tdslk.

To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.

Printing Table Colours

Hi there,

Apologies to query in multiple forums, but I wasn't sure if you had Help talk:Using colours watchlisted.

I was wondering if there was a way, when using the printable version of an article, to print colour within boxes.

For example, List of pollen sources puts the actual shade of the stated colour within the box. This is helpful, but disappears when looking at print preview (or the PDF version) - can it be retained? Nosebagbear (talk) 17:15, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

@Nosebagbear: I'm afraid I do not have that page watchlisted. You can try asking at the technical village pump.
If you want to print with colour, here's an idea that might work:
  1. Copy the contents of the article into Google Docs.
  2. Click on "File" -> "Download as" -> PDF.
I just tried it out and was able to get the colour within tables to be preserved. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 17:36, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
@K6ka: - hi there. Thanks for that, it seems to work pretty well, which I think is good enough for my purposes. Nosebagbear (talk) 17:42, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – April 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2019).

Technical news

Miscellaneous

  • Two more administrator accounts were compromised. Evidence has shown that these attacks, like previous incidents, were due to reusing a password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. All admins are strongly encouraged to enable two-factor authentication, please consider doing so. Please always practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.
  • As a reminder, according to WP:NOQUORUM, administrators looking to close or relist an AfD should evaluate a nomination that has received few or no comments as if it were a proposed deletion (PROD) prior to determining whether it should be relisted.

Hi,

I undid your change to the watchthis MediaWiki message since it didn't work - it was just showing unparsed wikitext on the delete form since MediaWiki treats it as plain text. Also it didn't really make sense to me if it did work - the text is a form label, clicking on it is supposed to check the box, so having it link somewhere else is a bit weird.

Is there a specific problem or request you were trying to address? IMO, it would be better to fix this in MediaWiki properly. HTH, Legoktm (talk) 14:49, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

@Legoktm: I made the change mostly for consistency with the MediaWiki:Minoredit page, which is shown in the edit window and wikilinks to Help:Minor edit. Since MediaWiki:Watchthis is used for the "Watch this page" checkbox right next to it, I thought it would be good to add a link to Help:Watchlist there as well. It works in the edit window, but apparently not on the delete form. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 17:18, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

Revision Deletion

Hi, I hope you don't mind me reaching out to you here about the revdel request I made on IRC a couple of days ago?

First off, I want to apologise again if I seemed to imply that I thought you were hesitant because of any bias on your part - that wasn't my intention, but the comment I made was badly worded. I've been thinking about the discussion quite a bit over the last couple of days and I cringe when I think I might have given that impression, so again, sorry.

I've been patrolling recent changes for about six months now. In that time I've made a lot of revision deletion requests, most of which have been accepted, but a few get declined; I've also once or twice been (very politely) ticked off for failing to request deletion when it would have been warranted. I'm therefore trying to get develop a solid understanding of what should, and should not, be revdelled - I don't want to waste your time with frivolous requests, but I also want to make sure that I don't let stuff slip through the net. Just to help me get a better handle on this, would you mind discussing your decision on this case?

I requested deletion because the description seemed obviously derogatory, and there was no assertion or sourcing anywhere in the article that supported it - that made me believe that it was a slur, as described in criterion 2 of WP:CRD, and in breach of our BLP policy. I'd do the same in a BLP if the subject was described as a murderer, or a sex criminal, or some other particularly heinous form of criminal. Am I wrong to take this approach, and can you give me any guidance on how to make the call about requesting revdel in cases like this?

Thanks in advance for any advice you're able to give. GirthSummit (blether) 11:27, 11 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi Girth Summit.
To clarify, I didn't decline the request, I just said I was a bit "hesitant" on that one. It probably didn't come across to me personally as being inappropriate enough for revdel the same way "child molestor" or a racist term probably would've. I could certainly be wrong in my judgement, as nobody's perfect (and anyone who thinks otherwise is mistaken).
And thanks for your apology; I agree that what you said was a little uncalled for, but luckily for you I forgot about it within an hour after you made it. k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 13:35, 11 April 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for clarifying - and I'm glad not to have caused lasting offence! I see that the edit wasn't deleted so I assume that others agreed with your assessment. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 14:34, 11 April 2019 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – May 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2019).

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • XTools Admin Stats, a tool to list admins by administrative actions, has been revamped to support more types of log entries such as AbuseFilter changes. Two additional tools have been integrated into it as well: Steward Stats and Patroller Stats.

Arbitration

  • In response to the continuing compromise of administrator accounts, the Arbitration Committee passed a motion amending the procedures for return of permissions (diff). In such cases, the committee will review all available information to determine whether the administrator followed "appropriate personal security practices" before restoring permissions; administrators found failing to have adequately done so will not be resysopped automatically. All current administrators have been notified of this change.
  • Following a formal ratification process, the arbitration policy has been amended (diff). Specifically, the two-thirds majority required to remove or suspend an arbitrator now excludes (1) the arbitrator facing suspension or removal, and (2) any inactive arbitrator who does not respond within 30 days to attempts to solicit their feedback on the resolution through all known methods of communication.

Call for submissions for the Community Growth space at Wikimania 2019

Welcome to a special newsletter from the Growth team! This special newsletter is not about Wikimedia Foundation Growth team projects. Instead, it is a call for submissions for the Community Growth space at Wikimania 2019. We think that many people who receive this newsletter may have something valuable to contribute to this space at Wikimania. We haven't translated the newsletter, because Wikimania's language is English.

Please see below for the message from the organizers of the Community Growth space at Wikimania.

---

Wikimania 2019 is organized into 19 “spaces”, which are all accepting proposals for sessions. This message comes from the team organizing the Community Growth space.

Since you are interested b Growth team projects, and potentially involved in welcoming newcomers initiatives on your wiki, we would like to invite you to submit a proposal to the Community Growth space because of the actions you’ve done around newcomers on wikis. The deadline for submission is June 1. See below for Community Growth submission topics and session formats. Topics and sessions have to be in English.

In the Community Growth space, we will come together for discussions, presentations, and workshops that address these questions:

  • What is and is not working around attracting and retaining newcomers?
  • How should Wikimedia activities evolve to help communities grow and flourish?
  • How should our technology and culture evolve to help new populations to come online, participate and become community members?

Recommended topics: please see this link for the list for the list of recommended topics. If you do not plan to submit a proposal, you can also suggest additional topics here. If your topic does not fit into our space, remember that there are 18 other spaces that could welcome you sharing your knowledge and perspective.

Types of session. We prefer sessions that are participatory, interactive, promote conversations, and give a voice to parts of our movement that are heard less often. Please see this link for the list of recommended session formats.

Poster submissions. Posters are also a good way to introduce a topic, or show some results of an action. Please consider submitting one!

More information about the Community Growth space, topics, and submission formats is available on the proposal page.

Please submit your proposal. The reviews will happen at the beginning of June.

If you have questions about Wikimania in general, please ask them on the Wikimania wiki.

On behalf of the Community Growth leadership team, Trizek (WMF), 11:44, 16 May 2019 (UTC)

Wainathan Cligne

Hi. I saw that you put a welcome message on new user Wainathan Cligne's Talk page. This user's only edits so far have been to insert an unreferenced assertion into the article West Side Story (2020 film) *three times*. I reverted and asked for a source (btw, no such thing has been announced, so no sources will be found to confirm the assertion), and the editor has edit warred to continue to make the change in the article without any ref. Can you help, please? -- Ssilvers (talk) 16:14, 25 May 2019 (UTC)!

@Ssilvers: I left them a {{Uw-unsourced1}}. I welcomed them because they appeared on WP:CHUS to ask for a username change, which I granted (I usually issue a welcome message if I see their talk page is a redlink). —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 17:09, 25 May 2019 (UTC)

Wainathan Cligne is continuing to edit war and make personal attacks on editors. Would you please take a look? -- Ssilvers (talk) 00:27, 30 May 2019 (UTC)
I have left them another message on their talk page. However, it may be worth at least starting a thread on the talk page of the article and invite them to leave an explanation there, since they wrote a pretty lengthy edit summary here, so they do seem willing to talk. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 00:50, 30 May 2019 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC seeks to clarify whether WP:OUTING should include information on just the English Wikipedia or any Wikimedia project.
  • An RfC on WT:RfA concluded that Requests for adminship and bureaucratship are discussions seeking to build consensus.
  • An RfC proposal to make the templates for discussion (TfD) process more like the requested moves (RM) process, i.e. "as a clearinghouse of template discussions", was closed as successful.

Technical news

  • The CSD feature of Twinkle now allows admins to notify page creators of deletion if the page had not been tagged. The default behavior matches that of tagging notifications, and replaces the ability to open the user talk page upon deletion. You can customize which criteria receive notifications in your Twinkle preferences: look for Notify page creator when deleting under these criteria.
  • Twinkle's d-batch (batch delete) feature now supports deleting subpages (and related redirects and talk pages) of each page. The pages will be listed first but use with caution! The und-batch (batch undelete) option can now also restore talk pages.

Of the 26 people who signed up for this drive, 21 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Miniapolis, Baffle gab1978, Jonesey95, Reidgreg and Tdslk.
