Changes this week

  • You can use TemplateData to indicate how you want a template to be displayed in wikitext. Tools like VisualEditor that edit templates will soon use this information. [1]
  • Echo notification icons in MonoBook will look more like other icons in the theme. [2]
  • The Community Tech team is doing a community wishlist survey to understand what they should be working on. They are now accepting proposals in all languages. You can create your proposal in the small box above the blue button and click it when you're done.
  • Wikis can make the welcome notification link to a specific page. [3]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from November 17. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from November 18. It will be on all Wikipedias from November 19 (calendar).

Meetings

  • You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 17 November at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

  • Internet Explorer 8 will no longer have JavaScript support. You will still be able to browse and edit Wikipedia, but will not be able to use some features. This can be solved by upgrading to a newer version or switching to a different browser. The change will happen in January 2016. [4][5]

For some reason, I got 2 revert notices from you for vandalism that not only were NOT made by me, but weren't shown as being part of my account. I've been editing here for years, and obviously have never vandalized once (why would I). Can you please look into this when you have a chance, and let me know if my account has somehow been compromised? I don't think it has, however - I have certainly never given anybody my password...online or offline. Thanks.

@Bomb319: You were "pinged" because my warning message contained a link to your userpage. Wikipedia has a system called Echo (notifications) that pings people if someone makes an edit on a discussion page that contains a link to their userpage (Like this message; I used the {{Ping}} template, which really just links to your userpage, so you get pinged). You were pinged because my warning message contained a link to your userpage, not because I sent you a message or that you did anything wrong. The message was intended for the IP user, not you. Bot automation at Wikipedia:Today's articles for improvement

Greetings WikiProject TAFI members!

Over the past two weeks, there has been extensive discussion on introducing bot automation to assist with maintenance of the Today's Articles for Improvement project. A bot has now been approved for trial and will carry out the weekly duties. The bots first run will occur around 00:00, 22 November 2015 (UTC) (midnight on Sunday).

If you have been assisting any of the weekly maintenance tasks, please refrain from doing so this week. The bot needs to be tested and proven it can do the job, and it only gets one chance per week. The tasks will include:

Updating the accomplishments and archiving selections is still done manually, along with daily tasks such as adding approved entries to the articles for improvement page. These will become automated in the near future.

We hope the bot proves to serve well, and by carrying out the routine housekeeping tasks we can boost the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the project. MusikBot thanks you for your service in helping with the weekly tasks in the past, and for your cooperation during this trial period :)

Hello, I originally made that request but my IP address changed, it was never answered properly as you will be able to see that the user who initially answered never replied after I suggested a compromise instead they changed it so it appeared to be answered, but it never was. I received a revert notice from you that was apparently directed to me because of my current IP address. I'm staying at an airbnb and using its wifi; anyone who has stayed at this house might have used the same IP address if it's static, which I don't know. @Geneal~enwiki: I believe you're barking up the wrong tree, because 1) Your user talk page doesn't have any warnings, and 2) I actually have never edited the Hydrology page before. You got the notification because you probably accessed Wikipedia before you logged in; when not logged in, any messages sent to that IP address will be visible to anyone using that IP address. Problems

  • On September 29 users' skin preferences were removed by mistake on small and medium-sized wikis. This changed preferences back to Vector. Restoring all data would cause even more problems. Affected users who want to have their preference changed back globally can ask for it as a comment on Phabricator task T119206 until December 21 2015. [7]
  • Some scheduled tasks were not working properly from September to recently. This meant some pages in the special pages namespace were not updated. It has now been fixed. [8]

Changes this week

  • Wikinews, Wikispecies, MediaWiki.org and Meta will be able to use information from Wikidata. [9][10]
  • There are no MediaWiki deployments this week (calendar).

Future changes

  • Category watchlists are now available on test wikis and MediaWiki.org. The plan is to enable it on most wikis in January. [11]
  • Cross-wiki notifications are being developed. When this is done you will not have to go to the wiki where something happened to be notified. [12]

Hi Allthefoxes. I use a wide variety of tools to assist me with recent changes patrolling. The one you probably saw me use is called Huggle, a standalone application written in C++. I also use STiki, another standalone application written in Java, and Twinkle, a browser gadget, written in Javascript. Recent changes

  • Revision scoring will help to automatically identify bad-faith and good-faith edits. The point is to make it easier to block vandals and welcome newcomers. It currently supports Wikidata and 14 Wikipedias. [13]

Problems

  • Meta was not given access to information from Wikidata last week. This will happen later. [14]

Changes this week

  • You will be able to use wikilinks in Flow topic titles. [15]
  • IP users will have a toolbar with links to the user talk page and user contributions. Some Wikipedias already have this feature. [16]
  • You will be able to edit the graph size in the visual editor. You can either specify the size in the graph dialog or drag it to be the size you want it to be. [17]
  • It will be easier to write math in the visual editor if you don't know LaTeX. You can use symbol buttons instead. [18]
  • You will be able to use syntax highlighting when you write math with LaTeX in the visual editor. [19]
  • UploadWizard will look a bit different. [20]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 December. It will be on all Wikipedias from 10 December. (calendar).
  • New MediaWiki versions will now be on Catalan and Hebrew Wikipedia on Wednesdays. Other Wikipedias get the new MediaWiki version on Thursdays. [21]

I am reluctantly responding to your comment regarding a revert on the Commonwealth Fund page. The edit I made was someone's last name that is incorrectly spelled. It is Samuel O. Thier and NOT Samuel O. Their. If you continue to think I am wrong, I suggest you look at the "select past board members" section on the same page or conduct a Google Search on the individual in question. I now would like to ask you, why would you consider my edit incorrect without doing any research on your end? Ellipticcoin → Gatland One Name Study

Gatland One Name Study renamed from Ellipticcoin is simply using an old account to begin a serious genealogical study of the surname of Gatland. I am a Guild member of www.one-name.org. My study is not as an employee but as a genealogy researcher in my home who has a subscription to the site and holds the ownership of the study. When other genealogy researchers use the keyword Gatland or any place or other surname in the articles, they will find my study page easier. I also have a website that is in its early stages www.gatlandonenamestudy.com and a facebook page as well. The Wiki page as the others will be developed over time as the study progresses. Wiki is the perfect place to tie the three together world-wide.

Did you know?

A new, simpler system for editing will offer a single Edit button. Once the page has opened, you can switch back and forth between visual and wikitext editing.

If you prefer having separate edit buttons, then you can set that option in your preferences, either in a pop-up dialog the next time you open the visual editor, or by going to Special:Preferences and choosing the setting that you want:

The current plan is for the default setting to have the Edit button open the editing environment you used most recently.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has fixed many bugs and expanded the mathematics formula tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are improving support for languages such as Japanese and Arabic, and providing rich-media tools for formulæ, charts, galleries and uploading.

Recent improvements

You can switch from the wikitext editor to the visual editor after you start editing.

The LaTeX mathematics formula editor has been significantly expanded. (T118616) You can see the formula as you change the LaTeX code. You can click buttons to insert the correct LaTeX code for many symbols.

Future changes

The single edit tab project will combine the "Edit" and "Edit source" tabs into a single "Edit" tab, like the system already used on the mobile website. (T102398) Initially, the "Edit" tab will open whichever editing environment you used last time. Your last editing choice will be stored as a cookie for logged-out users and as an account preference for logged-in editors. Logged-in editors will be able to set a default editor in the Editing tab of Special:Preferences in the drop-down menu about "Editing mode:".

The visual editor will be offered to all editors at the following Wikipedias in early 2016: Amharic, Buginese, Min Dong, Cree, Manx, Hakka, Armenian, Georgian, Pontic, Serbo-Croatian, Tigrinya, Mingrelian, Zhuang, and Min Nan. (T116523) Please post your comments and the language(s) that you tested at the feedback thread on mediawiki.org. The developers would like to know how well it works. Please tell them what kind of computer, web browser, and keyboard you are using.

In 2016, the feedback pages for the visual editor on many Wikipedias will be redirected to mediawiki.org. (T92661)

Testing opportunities

  • Please try the new system for the single edit tab on test2.wikipedia.org. You can edit while logged out to see how it works for logged-out editors, or you can create a separate account to be able to set your account's preferences. Please share your thoughts about the single edit tab system at the feedback topic on mediawiki.org or sign up for formal user research (type "single edit tab" in the question about other areas you're interested in). The new system has not been finalized, and your feedback can affect the outcome. The team particularly wants your thoughts about the options in Special:Preferences. The current choices in Special:Preferences are:
    • Remember my last editor,
    • Always give me the visual editor if possible, 
    • Always give me the source editor, and 
    • Show me both editor tabs.  (This is the current state for people using the visual editor. None of these options will be visible if you have disabled the visual editor in your preferences at that wiki.)
  • Can you read and type in Korean or Japanese? Language engineer David Chan needs people who know which tools people use to type in some languages. If you speak Japanese or Korean, you can help him test support for these languages. Please see the instructions at mw:VisualEditor/IME Testing#What to test if you can help, and report it on Phabricator (Korean - Japanese) or on Wikipedia (Korean - Japanese).

Usurp request in Meta

@Eden's Apple: The issue is not whether they are blocked or not. The issue is that they have lots of edits that were not immediately reverted as vandalism, were all deleted, or were only insignificant edits to their own userspace. The drafted usurpation policy, while not yet finalized, is still a good guideline to refer to. According to that policy, we may not be able to usurp this account because they meet none of the criteria in point #3. Also, "lapping" a user's edit count to try to usurp their username is not a good idea, because that will put even more strain on the servers when the rename jobs are running (We already have to rename the account you want to usurp. Users with high edit counts are difficult to rename because the server needs to reassign each and every one of their edits to the new username). —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 17:12, 24 December 2015 (UTC)
@Eden's Apple: In response to your email (because this isn't a "private" matter that I would consider using email as a means of communication), please wait for a response. I'll give them a poke, but I can't guarantee that the request will be processed. I emailed for not increasing my edit count. Okay, then why was it put on hold for one month?. Even one month ago Ruslik knew about Action Hero's edit count. Someone must take a final decision on that request. As you said increasing my edit count is not good idea, I can't stop editing for an uncertain period. They are not giving me any reply. Perhaps you misunderstood what I meant about "increasing edit count". As of this writing you only have 69 global edits; a few edits to my talk page isn't going to blow a server up. What I meant is that intentionally trying to get over the 900+ edit count in order to usurp the username you want to have is not a good idea, because that won't give you any more influence over whether you can usurp the username or not. @Eden's Apple: I don't think you're understanding why we're not processing your usurpation requests. The usernames you wish to usurp all have valid edits that were not immediately undone, not insignificant userspace edits, and not deleted. It doesn't matter whether the username you want to usurp has 300 edits or 30 — if they have valid edits, don't bother trying to usurp them. RfA reform

@Kudpung: I changed the link because RFA2011 is largely inactive, which made the wording "the community is working on" somewhat misleading (How can the community be working on something if the project is inactive?), so I thought I'd change it to RFA2015, since it is an active project. While it seems to be largely organized by one user, the RFCs it is going through is a community process, and there are users who are supportive of it, so I would believe that keeping the wording and simply changing the link is justified. Of course, I could have also kept the link and changed the wording to "the community was working on", but that seems discouraging and incorrect to me. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 05:02, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
With the greatest respect for all the effort that was put into RFA2011, it might be good to honestly consider which of the two projects actually proposed things and got at least some changes made. Even RFA2011's page admits straightforwardly that nothing was even proposed at all. (Don't shoot the messenger; I'm just saying what the source itself says.) On the other hand, that was simply not an option with RFA2015. The whole point of the project was to propose things, and without proposals there would have been no point to the project. RFA2011 has many potential proposals lying around in its project space, but what's the point if someone doesn't use them. Why hasn't anyone actually proposed the rather sensible clerking draft there? With some very light edits to bring it up to date a little bit, it looks ready to go. Anyone who is really concerned about bringing about change would have done their research and recognised WP:RFA2011 for the immense objective and systematic research that it provided. All that information is still relevant and could have been used effectively instead of launching RfCs that need RfCs to determine if the need for an RfC exists. A full examination of WP2011 would also have revealed that the reason for its failure to launch any proposals was due to the trolling on the project by the very users who will attempt even today to reduce the possibilities of success of any subsequent attempts at reform. - sooner or later people get bored, and one ends up with only the newbies or the peanut gallery commenting. I'll say again for what seems to be the 10,000th time: Fix the voters,and RfA will fix itself, but half-baked RfCs are no better than the none at all that were proposed by RFA2011.Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 09:19, 29 December 2015 (UTC)

In this case though you have one IP making a talk page for another IP address that is nothing but a test page. Also, since 0.0.0.1 is not a valid IP address, no one would ever receive any message left there. Question about changing usernames

I was hoping you could answer a quick question I had before I waste anyone's time at the request pages. Would it be impossible to take the username Modulus if someone made 291 edits under it on the Swedish Wikipedia (last edited in 2008)? StressOverStrain (talk) 04:00, 4 January 2016 (UTC)

Future changes

  • URLs in the recent changes IRC feed will no longer be rewritten to unencrypted HTTP. This could be a breaking change for bots dependent on the IRC feed. [33]
  • The edit tabs for the wikitext editor and the visual editor will be combined to one single edit tab. You will be able to choose which one you prefer. If you are not logged in, your choice will be saved as a cookie in your browser. You can test the single edit tab. [34][35]
  • There is a beta feature that adds links to the subject on other Wikimedia projects. This works much like the links to for example Wikipedia articles in other languages. It will go out of beta testing and be enabled for everyone in January. Wikis that don't want this can decide to have it disabled. [36][37]
  • The difference between "alerts" and "messages" notifications is unclear to some. The developers want feedback at the Phabricator task or on MediaWiki.org so they can make this better. You can give feedback in your language if you can't write in English.

@Cyberpower678: Hehe, well, the actual renaming process isn't too difficult; if you know how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich sandwich then you know how to rename people. The thing that confuses people the most, however, is likely to be the global account system.
In the past, accounts on other Wikimedia projects used to be different from one another. For example, if I had the username "John Doe" on the English Wikipedia, if I wanted an account on Commons I'd have to manually register an account there. And if I didn't, someone else could register the username "John Doe" on Commons...
...but not anymore; the global account system, or the "Single User Login" (SUL), fixes that by making usernames global. Now, if I registered "Jane Doe" on the English Wikipedia, no one else on any other Wikimedia project can register that username, even if the username hasn't been created on Commons. This works by creating a "global account", which contains the username and email. Accounts on individual Wikimedia projects are called "local accounts", and they are attached to a global account. A local account that is attached to a global account is automatically logged into when the username and password for the global account is specified. When you visit a wiki that you've never visited before, a local account on that wiki is automatically created and attached to your global account, allowing you to edit that wiki and set your personal preferences (which are still mostly local).
The introduction of the global account system has also allowed users to be renamed globally, across all of Wikimedia. In the past, renames were done locally, and if you wanted to rename your English Wikipedia and your Commons accounts, you had to make two separate requests on two separate wikis. The more accounts you had, the more annoying it got. The global account system solves this problem by allowing global renames; with only one request, all attached local accounts, plus the global account, will be moved to the new username. No more Google Translating your request in French!
Accounts with clashing usernames on other wikis could not make the transition to global accounts peacefully. They had to visit Special:MergeAccount to unify the local accounts. The accounts that didn't do this were forcefully renamed in order to allow a "dominant user" to get the full claim on the global account, and to give those unattached local accounts a global account of their own. So, that's a brief technical introduction to SUL and why it matters to global renaming. Like I said, the interface for global renaming is very simple, although there are some things you should be aware of...
  • Before renaming, always check Special:CentralAuth! Special:CentralAuth looks up the specified username across all of Wikimedia, and will return results if it finds something. It is used to locate global accounts and any local accounts (plus their edit count and user groups) attached to it. For example, Special:CentralAuth/K6ka reveals all of my local accounts, plus my global account status. Use Special:CentralAuth both on the requesting user's username and the target username. The first should be done to check for any active blocks, or for potential issues that could preclude renaming. The policy around renaming users that are blocked on another Wikimedia project is a bit vague, but at least for the English Wikipedia, it's common practice for users to be unblocked before being renamed. The latter should be done to see if the target username is already taken; if it appears to be used, even on another Wikimedia project, the rename request can't be processed (unless it's a usurpation request).
  • Be sure to use m:Special:GlobalRenameProgress on the requesting user's username. GlobalRenameProgress displays the progress of any renames in progress around Wikimedia when given a username. For example, if I renamed myself "K6ka", m:Special:GlobalRenameProgress/K6ka will show all my local accounts and whether or not they got renamed. The thing you want to look for here is the rename log; if the requesting user has been renamed in the past, a log entry will be made visible in GlobalRenameProgress. Generally, if a user has been renamed already, tell them that renaming user accounts take up valuable server resources, and that frivolous or repeated requests will not be processed. If they agree and understand, you can proceed with the rename. Also, if a user has made too many rename requests, or has been renamed too many times, you can decline the request or discuss it with other global renamers.
  • What about similar usernames? Oh, right. When processing a request you may run into messages that say something like "The target username is similar to an existing username: <blah blah blah>". That's the Antispoof filter, intended to prevent users from picking usernames too similar to existing ones. However, Antispoof does occasionally block names that bear no similarity to the conflicting name. Unfortunately, while WP:ACC has a process for handling this, global renaming does not. You can see m:Talk:Steward_requests/Username_changes#Accounts_with_similar_usernames for a proposal, and for now you can follow the suggestions there.
  • And usurpations? Again, there is no official global usurpation policy, although a draft has been written here. For now, leave requests made on WP:CHU/U be, as only stewards and English Wikipedia bureaucrats who are also global renamers can handle requests there. I've seen some non-steward global renamers process usurpations on m:SRUC, but don't worry: I've never usurped an account in my life, so if you don't feel comfortable doing it, that's totally fine.

One more thing... remember what I said about global accounts and local accounts being attached when you visit another wiki? You can use m:User:Krinkle/Tools/Global SUL to create your local accounts across all of Wikimedia. Thank you for the thorough explanation. Being an ACC user SUL is something we must be familiar with and we run intense checks on the requesting user including SUL checks and deal with AntiSpoof scenarios. I will read the proposals but I don't find it unreasonable to also implement ACC guidelines for the time being correct? @Opps123: Same reason as all the previous messages left by other users on your talk page. Everything added to articles about a living person must be reliably sourced by a citation. "Go find the sources yourself" isn't an excuse; the source needs to be there now. Contentious material about living persons (or, in some cases, recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced – whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable – should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 18:08, 15 January 2016 (UTC)

  • Administrators can hide individual entries of a page with RevisionDelete. There is now a button to choose "all", "none" or "inverse" in Special:Log. The article history will get the same buttons soon. Wikis that have done this locally with JavaScript will be able to remove that code. [44]

  • You will be able to see the references when you preview a section you are editing. This will happen even if there is no <references /> tag in that section. [45]

  • The OTRS system will be upgraded. The plan is to do this on 3 February at 08:00 (UTC). It will probably take 6 to 8 hours. OTRS will be down during the upgrade. [47]
  • Users will soon be automatically congratulated when they reach some edit count milestones. [48]

Thanks - I see we hit exactly the same buttons at about the same time! The other issue with them is that their photos were taken by an outside agency who claims to hold copyright in the metadata. Problems

  • Sites with a wikimedia.org address were by mistake redirected to the Wikimedia Foundation wiki on 26 January. This included Meta and Wikimedia Commons. The mistake was fixed after an hour. [49]
  • Some users had problems logging in and out around 22 January. Bots also had problems and edit previews did not work properly. This was because of problems related to the new component SessionManager. It was undone on 23 January. [50][51]
  • Because of new problems with SessionManager the latest version of MediaWiki was removed from the Wikimedia wikis again on 31 January. The new version this week will be without SessionManager. [52]

Changes this week

  • The page history will get a help link. This will go to Help:Page history on Meta. Wikis can exchange it for a link to their local pages. [53]
  • Notifications will only show part of a page name if it is very long. You will also have another way to mark notifications as read. [54][55]
  • The Universal Language Selector input methods are now available with the visual editor. This means many who write in non-Latin scripts can now use the visual editor. [56]
  • The visual editor will now give you more tools to edit tables. You can move rows and columns in a table and copy parts of tables to make new ones. You can also copy and paste more than one cell at the same time. [57][58][59]
  • The visual editor has a new warning message when you leave a page you are editing without saving. Non-English wikis might need to translate it. [60][61]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 2 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 3 February. It will be on all wikis from 4 February (calendar).

  • The rest.wikimedia.org domain will be shut down. This is planned to happen in March. You should use /api/rest_v1/ at each individual project domain instead. [62]

  • You can now edit pages on the mobile site version without JavaScript. [73]
  • You can now use the Math extension to write chemistry formulas. [74]

Problems

  • A few editors might have been logged in as someone else because of a bug. For security reasons everyone was logged out on 9 February. If you have seen this bug, you can report it. [75][76]

Changes this week

  • There is a beta feature that adds links to the subject on other Wikimedia projects. The plan was to have it leave beta testing and be enabled for everyone in January. It will happen on 16 February instead. Wikis that don't want this can decide to have it disabled. [77][78]
  • Cross-wiki notifications will be available as a beta feature on Wikidata, MediaWiki, Commons, and all Hebrew and French wikis on 19 February. [79]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 February. It will be on all wikis from 18 February (calendar).

  • You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 16 February at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.

  • The search function on Wikimedia wikis will get a completion suggester that tries to find the right pages as the user is typing. It will also recognize some typos. This will probably happen in March. It is currently in beta. [80]

Rename question

Hi. I hope you don't mind my asking a question about global renaming. I saw the Kingibk → True_N request, tried it and got a warning that there's a similar username already there called Truen. Truen has made no edits since registering in 2009, so I thought it was probably not a real problem, but I decided to leave it and see how an expert would handle it. I see you did the rename, so am I along the right lines in assuming it was OK because Truen was old and had no edits? Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 13:05, 22 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi Boing! said Zebedee. Unfortunately, the policy around similar usernames (AntiSpoof) for global renamers is quite vague. I renamed because I felt that "Truen" couldn't possibly be confused for "True N" as the differences between them are quite distinct. If the username were slightly more similar, say, "True N" versus "Truε n" (or "k6ka" versus "k5ka"), then AntiSpoof would definitely come in handy; notifying the requesting user about the conflict is advised. However, if the account with the conflicting username is inactive, then it may be acceptable to proceed with the renaming and notify the user who got renamed about the conflict, and advise them to be prepared to change their username again should there be confusion. I proposed a policy for this at m:Talk:Steward requests/Username changes but discussion has largely dried up. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 15:20, 22 February 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for your thoughts - that makes a lot of sense. My own thinking was that confusion between the two would be unlikely, especially as one is inactive, so I would certainly agree with a rename in this case. Interesting discussion at m:Talk:Steward requests/Username changes too, and it's a shame it dried up - what you suggest, if used as policy-based guidelines with some discretion allowed, makes sense, and I guess that's the way such things are de facto treated anyway. I request you review the text that I had deleted. It is composed entirely of a long screed by apparently a litigant against the company and/or its founders. It makes allegations of child rape against one of the founders among other allegations. I can not believe text like that could be left on a wikipedia page or from a purely legal perspective allowed to be published on the site. Can you explain why it should not be deleted? Among experienced editors, the visual editor's table editing is one of the most popular features.

If you select the top of a column or the end of a row, you can quickly insert and remove columns and rows.

Now, you can also rearrange columns and rows. Click "Move before" or "Move after" to swap the column or row with its neighbor.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has fixed many bugs. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are improving support for Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Indic, and Han scripts, and improving the single edit tab interface.

Recent changes

You can switch from the wikitext editor to the visual editor after you start editing. This function is available to nearly all editors at most wikis except the Wiktionaries and Wikisources.

Many local feedback pages for the visual editor have been redirected to mw:VisualEditor/Feedback.

You can now re-arrange columns and rows in tables, as well as copying a row, column or any other selection of cells and pasting it in a new location.

The formula editor has two options: you can choose "Quick edit" to see and change only the LaTeX code, or "Edit" to use the full tool. The full tool offers immediate preview and an extensive list of symbols.

Future changes

The single edit tab project will combine the "Edit" and "Edit source" tabs into a single "Edit" tab. This is similar to the system already used on the mobile website. (T102398) Initially, the "Edit" tab will open whichever editing environment you used last time. Your last editing choice will be stored as an account preference for logged-in editors, and as a cookie for logged-out users. Logged-in editors will have these options in the Editing tab of Special:Preferences:

  • Remember my last editor,
  • Always give me the visual editor if possible,
  • Always give me the source editor, and
  • Show me both editor tabs.  (This is the state for people using the visual editor now.)

The visual editor uses the same search engine as Special:Search to find links and files. This search will get better at detecting typos and spelling mistakes soon. These improvements to search will appear in the visual editor as well.

The visual editor will be offered to all editors at most "Phase 6" Wikipedias during the next few months. The developers would like to know how well the visual editor works in your language. They particularly want to know whether typing in your language feels natural in the visual editor. Please post your comments and the language(s) that you tested at the feedback thread on mediawiki.org. This will affect the following languages: Japanese, Korean, Urdu, Persian, Arabic, Tamil, Marathi, Malayalam, Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, Thai, Aramaic and others.

  • Thanks to the Graph extension and Pageview API, we now have {{Graph:PageViews}} templates that can show pageviews for any wiki page for any of the wikis. See the examples.
  • The Capiunto extension is installed on test wiki. Capiunto provides flexible infobox functionality for Scribunto and generates HTML for infobox features such as headers and rows. It is designed for clean and modern infoboxes that are driven by data from Wikidata, easily usable across different language versions, and easily extensible.
  • The visual editor now follows the TemplateData format setting announced in November. When you edit or add a use of a template, the wikitext will be laid out in one of the two ways. [86][87]
  • The order of parameters and format defined in a template's TemplateData will be now respected. [88][89]

Changes this week

  • On wikis where the visual editor is available in single edit tab mode, red links may open the visual editor instead of the wikitext editor, depending on user preferences. [90]
  • Anonymous editor warning is now displayed as a warningbox for consistency in both the visual editor and the wikitext editor. [91]
  • Parsoid has been updated to fit some HTML 5 specifications. [92]

WikiCup 2015 March newsletter

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. Forty-seven competitors move into this round (a bit shy of the expected 64), and we are roughly broken into eight groups of six. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups.

Twenty-two Good Articles were submitted, including three by Connecticut Cyclonebiskit (submissions), and two each by Denmark MPJ-DK (submissions), Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions), Florida 12george1 (submissions), and New South Wales Cas Liber (submissions). Twenty-one Featured Pictures were claimed, including 17 by There's always time for skeletons Adam Cuerden (submissions) (the Round 1 high scorer). Thirty-one contestants saw their DYKs appear on the main page, with a commanding lead (28) by Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions). Twenty-nine participants conducted GA reviews with Lancashire J Milburn (submissions) completing nine.
