Little context in Plumeria obtusa

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Plumeria obtusa, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Plumeria obtusa is very short providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Plumeria obtusa, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. To add some context to the automated message above, Wikipedia doesn't normally have "gallery" type articles containing pictures only. However, if creating these kind of articles is something you'd like to do, Wikimedia Commons (here) would love your help. If you have any questions, please let me know. Best regards, Angus McLellan (Talk) 20:27, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Gallery locations

Hi Jmgarg1 - thanks for adding lots of photos! Please note though, the usual position of a galley is at the foot of the page not at the top! - thanks, MPF 08:31, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Too many images

Hi JM,

Thanks for adding images to Wikipedia articles on Indian butterflies. However, you have added too many images in Edales pandava, which has now begun to detract from the article. Perhaps you are not aware about image use and placement in wikipedia, in which case its my privilege to give you the input.

Types of Images required

Images are placed to visually give information regarding the butterfly, hence there should generally be one image regarding different aspects, examples of aspects being:

  • UP & UN of the butterfly, separate for male & female if sexual dimorphism exists, such as in the case of Danaind Eggfly Hypolimnas misippus and also for each morph if they exist as in the case of Common Mormon Papilio polytes, and in the case os seasonal variations, ie DSF and WSF (as in the case of most Satyrids).
  • Image of egg, caterpillar (different stages), pupa, emerging butterfly.
  • Images of behaviour (mud-puddling, ant-association, unusual resting postures(upside down in case of Common Map, [[Cyrestis thyodamas)etc).
  • Images of like species for comparison (red-bodied & black-bodied swallowtails with similar markings) or mimics and their models (see Plain Tiger Danaus chrysippus).
  • Close-ups of notable features, if they exist, say brands, antennae, etc.
  • Images of butterflies from very different geographic regions or of subspecies may also be given, as also gynandromorphs, melanism, etc.
  • Images of pinned-up specimens, or of old drawings and woodcuts also add value to the article.

Image Placement

Since the aim of Wikipedia is to be an encyclopaedia, images also have to be placed sensibly and intelligently. Guidelines for these are mostly common-sense and would definitely include the following:

  • A nice, representative image of the butterfly in typical pose, for the taxobox.
  • Images of UP,UN etc along with section on 'description'.
  • Map showing range, alongwith section on 'distribution'.
  • A small gallery with egg, caterpillar, pupa, emerging adult in section of 'life-history'.
  • Other images may be appropriately placed, example, a woodcut next to the section on 'references'.
  • Remaining useful images, if any, should be placed in a gallery, at the end of the article.

To learn about images in Wikipedia see this page. For learning how to place images in articles, please see this tutorial.

Since, users come here to learn about the butterfly, it is generally preferable NOT to use images of damaged butterflies unless no other is available.

In light of what I have told you, I would advise you to go to Edales pandava and remove superfluous images (preferably the ones of the damaged butterflies).

I do hope this has been of some use to you. Oh yes, do drop me a note at my talk page.Best wishes for your wikipeding and hope you enjoy enhancing the value of wikis by intelligent addition of images.

Yours sincerely, AshLin 12:47, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

I have taken necessary corrective action. Will keep in mind in future. Thanks. Jmgarg1

Hi, I moved your treecreeper image to Hodgson's Treecreeper since this has very recently been split from Common Treecreeper. please let me know if this is a problemJimfbleak 15:32, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Swiftlets

I'm looking for an image of any of the Aerodramus swiftlets. I wonder if perhaps you have a photo of one of the Indian species? Jimfbleak 11:12, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, I am not having any such pictures.Jmgarg1 00:47, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Rock Dove

Nice picture of the Rock Dove you placed in the gallery there. I've moved it up to the head of the article as I feel it is a nicer example of the variety and will be better suited there. Cheers :-) Sting_au | Talk 04:34, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Borassus

Howdy - Based on an incidental typo or two I mistook some of your edits as vandalism back in September and I deleted a gallery of pictures you added. I've realized my mistake now and can see that your pictures have been restored. Sorry about the confusion. At your convenience, please add more great native palm pictures (and flora and fauna of any type) and I will go out of my way not to delete them. Again, all my apologies and thanks for all the media.Mmcknight4 (talk) 08:27, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

That's fine. Jmgarg1 (talk) 11:53, 25 December 2007 (UTC)

Can you identify any of this Indian flora? I think its the ones on top, uploaded on March 31. Thanks Mmcknight4 (talk) 06:06, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Thank you

The photographers barnstar for the generous contributions of images to help in improving the state of natural history information in the Indian region. Shyamal (talk) 11:57, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, Shymal. What does it mean? Jmgarg1 (talk) 12:05, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

It is just a token of appreciation ! It is called a barnstar. :) Shyamal (talk) 12:10, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Languages

Hi, I just saw your edit on Indian gooseberry and found your user page. I'm looking for people with skill in various Indian languages for various articles, but can't figure out which is your native language, since you give your level of Hindi as "2," but none as your native language. Could you tell me which you speak as your native language? Thank you, Badagnani (talk) 02:51, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Though my native language is Hindi only, but I am rather poor in its writing due to constant use of English in day to day work.

Jmgarg1 (talk) 02:57, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Hoopoe

I've seen the wonderful indian photos you've put in the article hoopoe. Would you help me please? I need the translation of the english word "hoopoe" in the main indian languages (Sanskrit, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarathi, Bengali, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Malayalam, Assamese, Kannada, Oriya, etc.), but unfortunately, I'm not Indian. If you have at home dictionaries for some indian languages (or you speak either indian language) - this may help me. In english alphabet please - if possible. Thank you in advance. Eliko (talk) 20:32, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

I could locate names of Common Hoopoe Upupa epops from Salim Ali's "The Book of Indian Birds" & these are Hudhud (Hindi, Marathi); Hudhud or Ghanti tankno (Gujrati); Konda pitta, Kukuda guwa (Telugu); Poruwa kurulla (Sinhala); Chaval kuruvi (Tamil); Uppooppan (Malayalam). I hope this helps.Jmgarg1 (talk) 15:31, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Photos on lakes of Northeast

Hi! JMGarg, I find that you have added some pictures on Mahuwa tree in the article. By the way, if you have pictures of Loktak Lake in Manipur and phumdis and the Lamjo park in Manipur, can you post on the artciles or upload on wikicommons for use in artciles?--Nvvchar (talk) 11:05, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
