Hi[edit]

As one of these who gave me a barnstar, maybe you might voice your opinion at [1] in case if there was actually a discussion. (I'm not asking for any kind of support, but for a neutral opinion, actually based on my edits.) Thanks. --Niemti (talk) 12:29, 27 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Wikipedia Adventure: Request for feedback on Community Fellowship proposal[edit]

Hi! I'm contacting you because you have participated or discussed The Wikipedia Adventure learning tutorial/game idea. I think you should know about a current Community Fellowship proposal to create the game with some Wikimedia Foundation support. Your feedback on the proposal would be very much appreciated. I should note that the feedback is for the proposal, not the proposer, and even if the Fellowship goes forward it might be undertaken by presently not-mentioned editors. Thanks again for your consideration.

Speedy Deletion of Outerloop Management[edit]

I wasn't finished with the article, that is why it may have appeared that way. However, the labels and marketers for bands that this company personally manages all have wikipedia pages. This company works very hard at getting these bands to where they are successfully. This was in no way created as a way to publicize or be "unambiguous advertising" of any kind; but to represent the management community that is unfamiliar to most individuals that may be interested. Historical data along with their current roster was to be added in much more detail today until this point to show the impact of their efforts in the managerial arena. If you have music labels and bands on here (which could also be considered "advertising"), this could be considered discimination against another company that plays a very needed role at keeping bands on the road; where true success is defined. I already have the script, so if I need to rewrite I will, as long as I can still use the page URL I created. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GMoneyWCAR (talkcontribs) 01:09, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Lemme get this straight. The article opens with sentences such as "The company's mission is to use extensive industry experience to guide clients to achieve personal and professional success. Based on open communication and long lasting partnerships, Outerloop Management establish a foundation with each client so they can prosper artistically and financially over the course of a prolonged and fulfilling career", and you're saying it wasn't intended as advertising or publicising? Despite the fact that you work with/for the company, according to your own userpage? And you weren't finished with it, you just hadn't touched it in five days?
For reference, it isn't discrimination. If you can show me another label's article that is as wonderfully promotional as this one I am happy to tag it as well. Ironholds (talk) 01:25, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

First off, that is information I quoted word for word directly from a site, URL: http://hollywoodwaste.com/apparel-roster/outerloop-management-clothing-labels/. I do not work for this company in any shape or form; I only support them in what they are doing and believe it should be recognized. The only "with" aspect at all is correcting wikipedia's for bands they manage that are mutual friends of mine. If you can guide me on what should be corrected instead of questioning my motives (which are not publicity based at all as I have nothing to gain from it) this would get finalized alot quicker. I used sourced site material to create this, not just a made up story. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GMoneyWCAR (talkcontribs) 22:49, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Okay; quoting directly would be a copyright violation. You need to:
  • Write it in your own words, but with citations to reliable sources that back up what you're saying, and;
  • Avoid a biased/promotional tone in what you're writing.
I would suggest you start writing in a "sandbox" - like User:GMoneyWCAR/Outerloop - where you can write without being at risk of deletion. I'm happy to provide any feedback on your work once you've put stuff down on paper, so to speak :). Ironholds (talk) 23:40, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Even if you source the material giving credit, it is considered copyright infringement? I'll go back and refine my work, however, will it be able to be posted back to the original page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by GMoneyWCAR (talkcontribs) 14:03, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It is, yep. You can post on the original page, but as said, I would recommend a sandbox so you can work on it in peace :). Ironholds (talk) 19:20, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have placed an updated version in my sandbox. Would you be so kind to review it and let me know how it is? — Preceding unsigned comment added by GMoneyWCAR (talkcontribs) 22:53, 6 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! Sorry for taking so long to get back to this. So:
  • "as a means for a seasoned tour manager to transition from a life on the road to a life at home. Since then the organization has evolved into a full team of talent management" kinda reads as an advertisement, and appears to be copied from this page; we can't have content copied by elsewhere, so it has to be rephrased both to be more neutral and to match that page less.
  • Ditto "Together, both thought it would be advantageous if they partnered, combining Cohen's legal and business expertise with Mowery's extensive knowledge of the touring world.". I'll jump in and help. Ironholds (talk) 16:49, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

NPP[edit]

I see you have been doing some page patrolling. You may have noticed, as I have, that the actual quality of patrolling appears to have improved recently, although many patrollers still go for the low hanging fruit. Daily checks on the names of patrollers would seem to suggest that there are fewer minors and inexperience users on the task - perhaps this is due to my insignificant efforts to clean up the process. Possibly due to this however, there is now a long backlog again. My enthusiasm for improving NPP has not yet been completely daunted, and I am currently doing my best to recruit more patrollers of the required experience and maturity. This also means checking their talk pages that they are able to communicate in the right tone with the general public without using 'teen-talk'or other informal language. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 04:26, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. I'm not sure what direct relevance this has to me :). I mean, yes, I've been doing a lot of patrolling, but you don't seem to be asking a question as such ;p. So, in order:
There is a very long backlog in New Pages Feed; however, don't trust the stats at the moment (they're borked. They will be fixed). In my experience patrolling from the back of the queue the reason that there are so many entries seems to be, quite simply, that we're counting redirects now. This has generated a lot of work and at some point we probably want to have a talk, as a community, about the granting (or not granting) of autopatrolled - we have set a high standard because of the potential for abuse, but this is going to limit its effectiveness now that redirects are being counted.
On the "minors" front; I'm very disappointed that you haven't taken the commentary in your Request for Adminship into account. User:Sonia, SoWhy, Aiken Drum and others raised the issue of your attitude towards younger editors; your defence was that you have no problem with editors of any age - the question is of maturity. You expect users to be adequately mature, and your standards set reflect that (for example, your RfA standards include the maturity of an adult, not the age of one). I think this is totally reasonable, and it's an opinion that I happen to share; administrators specifically and editors generally should act maturely. But when you say things like "Daily checks on the names of patrollers would seem to suggest that there are fewer minors and inexperience users on the task - perhaps this is due to my insignificant efforts to clean up the process" - or to paraphrase, "there are fewer minors patrolling and this is a good thing", you make it sound like it is about age. This may not be your intent, but I think from time to time we could all do with a check on the kind of language we use and the inferences others will draw from it :).
I don't agree that informal language is a bad thing - nor that we're dealing with the general public. On the first point, we're essentially a social network using the technical sense of the term: the thing that distinguishes us from places like Facebook is that those are social networks for the sake of social networking, while we are social networks for the sake of building an encyclopaedia of the world's knowledge. We're fellow volunteers, we're acquaintances, heck, we're comrades - and in many cases, we're friends. A degree of informality is not a bad thing. On the contrary, it can be a very good thing; Maryana, Steven and a whole host of editors A/B tested warning templates and found that more informal and friendly messages were much better at encouraging people to fix their mistakes (or leave, if they're engaging in bad-faith editing) than formal notices, which tend to just scare people off whatever their intentions. I'm really pleased to be able to use this research in formatting the CSD templates we'll be using with the curation toolbar - because informality can actually be a good thing. It shows humanity and empathy in a way that formal language tends not to.
On the general public front, mostly we're not dealing with the general public; we're dealing with people who want to edit Wikipedia (and if this was the general public, the entire Editor Engagement team would be out of a job!). Some of them are going to be bad-faith, and those we can kick out. Some of them are going to be goaded on by their employer wanting a page, and those we can monitor. But a lot of them have their heart in the right place and just need a bit of encouragement - encouragement that is much more effective with friendly and informal commentary than with harsh notices. Because ultimately, we're all volunteers - we don't have to be here if we don't want to. When someone mucks up, "don't do this" is going to be a lot less effective than "hey, this didn't come out quite right, but thanks for helping out! In future, how about doing this?", because the former offers someone an exit and the latter offers a way forward.

(apologies for the TL;DR). Ironholds (talk) 05:29, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrolled editors[edit]

What would you think of giving WR227 the autopatrolled flag. He creates a large number of articles that fill up the NewPagesFeed. The only issue is he'd need to state that he'll include inline citations in his future articles since I've had to tag all of them with {{no footnotes}}Ryan Vesey 19:06, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why not wait until he's demonstrably done that, rather than promised to? Malleus Fatuorum 19:11, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You're right, and on second thought, I gave the exact reason he shouldn't be autopatrolled in my comment. Someone should keep an eye out though, because if he starts including inline citations he should probably get the userright. On another note, I was given the flag, but I'm not sure that I particularly want it. I like getting at least one other person's eyes on all of my articles. I rarely create more than a few articles in a day so I don't feel like it would be a drain if I didn't have it. That being said, is there any way to not be autopatrolled, but still have all of my pages indexed if the noindexing unpatrolled pages gets reinstated? I'll keep the flag if that isn't possible. Ryan Vesey 19:38, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Most pages seem to be patrolled pretty quickly unless there's something a bit "unusual" about them, so I wouldn't see that as any kind of problem. FWIW I don't have the autopatrolled "right", and I wouldn't accept it even if it was offered. In fact I've asked for it to be removed in the past. Malleus Fatuorum 19:44, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I had some pages, like Barry Stuppler never get patrolled. For the longest time they weren't indexed by Google. Stuppler was even on the main page, but you still couldn't find it in a Google search. Ryan Vesey 19:45, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'll let him know about the footnotes, but I'm not going to do anything until he starts adding them :). Still, let me know if you find any other good candidates! Ironholds (talk) 20:46, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Patrolled pages[edit]

I notice that the new pages I create in the Cyanobacteria stay unpatrolled for what seems to be a long time, compared to other pages. Does this matter? I am starting with well-known clades and intend to move onto the obscure. Will these simply remain unpatrolled? Does it matter if they are not patrolled? I do make a lot of little errors, so patrolling by another user is useful, you know. Eau (talk) 20:50, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

For a while, unpatrolled pages were not indexed by google. I found an error in that and it was temporarily halted. You've got 9 unpatrolled articles. I'll try to get around to them in the next few days. Ryan Vesey 20:52, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Nine? I think the plant editors look at the plant articles quickly, but I do appreciate your looking at the Cyanobacteria articles. Thanks. Eau (talk) 21:02, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In the meantime, I've granted you the "autopatrolled" user right; this certifies you're considered someone who can be trusted to write fantastic articles. Your articles will now be automatically reviewed :). Ironholds (talk) 21:13, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, thanks. It is still useful to have a second person check a new article, though, you know. It would be nice to have more editors who are capable of creating, editing, and monitoring bacteria, protist and algae articles. I have found many copypastes, bad taxonomies, missing organisms. Eau (talk) 21:22, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Totally agreed, on both points; it's a difficult problem. But if you know anyone in the real world who might be able to contribute with some expertise, you could always ask them to get involved - many hands make light work! Ironholds (talk) 21:24, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia is not an inviting place for experts, unfortunately, otherwise I would encourage my colleagues to help out. Eau (talk) 21:29, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
A perpetual problem :(. In my other capacity I'm working on making things easier for people, but it's slow going. Ironholds (talk) 21:31, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
A very uninviting place for experts. It seems that a majority of editors attempt to drive out the experts as soon as they appear rather than explain the importance of using our existing policies regardless of their credentials. Since you are interested in those topics, you might want to help out at Category:Stub-Class Microbiology articles and Category:Microbiology articles needing attention. We also have a large list of articles needing expert attention. Perhaps your colleagues would be willing to review those articles and draft up a series of suggestions that could be placed on the talk pages. Then the community could review them. Ryan Vesey 21:32, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's an uninviting place for everyone. Malleus Fatuorum 21:34, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have already tried making talk page suggestions. In the future, I will edit, and it can be reverted.
Malleus, indeed, it appears to be extremely uninviting for members of the human race, yet I was only talking about whether or not I could invite phycologist colleagues to contribute to articles. Eau (talk) 21:53, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ryan, I have plenty to do, although the category shows some plant stubs, at least one, in the microbiology articles. The experts required is so randomly filled with things outside of my area, that it would not be useful to search through it for algae and microbe articles. Eau (talk) 21:57, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I was briefly a psychologist myself, so I can say with absolute confidence that the overwhelming majority of Wikipedia's psychology articles are piles of ordure, so there would be plenty of work for your colleagues to get stuck into. They'd probably need to be warned that pretty thick skins are required though unfortunately. Malleus Fatuorum 22:00, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
"Phycology," the study of algae, weird, photosynthetic things that no one has ever heard of, not "psychology." I could not, in good faith, after my experience at Wikipedia, suggest to anyone else that they edit. Eau (talk) 22:05, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm currently watching/enjoying this. In it, you mentioned the graph of the topmost helppages that you'd created waybackwhen; I know I've seen and stared at it before (many years ago, when redesigning Help:Contents in 2006, and since), but cannot find it. I'd appreciate a link, but more than that, if you have time/inclination (given your pet-names for it ;) I'd adore an updated version. Partially for my own infographic lust, but especially for Wikipedia:Help Project/Community fellowship (the Help Project is meandering towards a massive reorganization, and I believe your graph might help give a significant additional perspective). Thanks muchly, and again, good talk. -- Quiddity (talk) 01:58, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, found it (hidden in a here link! >.< ;p ). I'd thought you were talking about File:Main Page Usability.png which I've seen around before. Yours is only 1 year old, so no update needed; I'll stare at it for a while, and might link that article and image in the Help Project talkpage, if that's ok? (Or maybe you could upload a copy to WP/Commons?) -- Quiddity (talk) 05:09, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sure! I've also got a spreadsheet around here with the breakdown of readability pages, if you think it'd be useful. Happy to email that to you. Ironholds (talk) 11:07, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
now done! Ironholds (talk) 11:13, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oooo, I haven't seen that error message before! Fun! (image too large, unable to generate thumbnail) heehee ;) ('tis appreciated though, local-hosting = easy linking and tagging)
I saw the "SMOG help.ods" linked in your blog post, is there another spreadsheet to see? I'm happy to glance at anything (and wish I had time to absorb everything).
Just fyi, I asked Trevor if he'd be able to advise or assist with updating his own image. I'm hoping one/some of us can whip up some new mental-maps over the next few months, for insight with those 3 redesign projects, and future meta-simplification work.

Improving Wikipedia/WMF relations[edit]

You may wish to catch up on this, in particular the comments section. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 08:11, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This seems like a thing that should be addressed to my work account :). I've been following the discussion, and echo what Erik has already said on this front - I'm not sure precisely what I'm expected to draw from it except "people aren't happy with how the WMF prioritises things and deploys changes", which is both fair enough (I'm not entirely happy with it) and, in a lot of respects, outside my jurisdiction. My role is to improve communications and feedback for, at the moment, two projects being developed by one team in one sub-department of Engineering. I don't have either the jurisdiction or the time to tell Platform how to do their job better, or to jump in and say "hey, visual editor team/mobile team/experiments team, here's what you should be doing". Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 08:34, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oliver, just a suggestion from a customer services point of view, if this is indeed outside of your jursidiction and you don't have time to deal with it, it might be a good idea to suggest someone who's remit it does fall under, perhaps with a reasoning why? You might even take it to them yourself. I find the "not me, off you trot" attitude quite infuriating whereever I see it. WormTT(talk) 08:52, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I would if there was such a person. For the visual editor we have James F, obviously, but for Platform, the best we have is the communications team, particularly User:guillom. There isn't so much a dedicated community person as there is a group generally tasked with talking to everyone. Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 08:57, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Job opening? WormTT(talk) 09:00, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's not for me to decide :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 09:02, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Tilman, an analyst with the communications team, wants me to clarify; when I said above that Guillaume worked for communications and dealt with Platform, what I meant was "he works as Communications Manager in the Platform team" and not "he works in the Communications team in Global Development" - apologies if this caused any confusion :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 11:43, 26 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Oliver! To add, the WMF Communications team (with capital C, currently in the Global Development department, soon in the LCA department, but supporting the whole organization) consists of Jay Walsh, Matthew Roth, James Alexander and myself, although of course several other WMF staff and contractors do great communications work, e.g. Guillaume. This is to clarify that Oliver did not want to assign us the responsibility of responding to Signpost stories regarding Platform engineering. Regards, Tbayer (WMF) (talk) 11:57, 26 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't actually expect a reply to this FYI, but some of the commentators here can probably understand why it took me several minutes to decide which account to post it on. I thought of both, but that would have probably resulted in a split discussion (if any). I finally placed it here because at the end of the day, Oliver is one person, and it's a myth to assume that having two hats means having two personalities and two different approaches to communications. 'Off you trot', which sometimes comes far less politely from Oliver, is even more disturbing when it come from a staffer/contractor whose very brief is to maintain and/or coordinate communications between the Foundation and the community. It's a bit at odds with the mission of this presentation. How many Oliver Keyes were at Wikimania? And if only one, which one? I wasn't able to meet any of them. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 10:14, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you'd actually posted the full conversation that was had instead of one, individually juicy snippet, "some of the commentators here" might be able to see why I wasn't too enthusiastic to meet you - and that I did, nevertheless, actively try to engage you in conversation at Wikimania.
To put it bluntly, I'd ask: what exactly is the productive outcome you expect from this conversation - from rehashing old events, be they Wikimania, our disagreements over the survey or anything else? If you genuinely, as you've claimed, want to work things out, then there's a fairly simple starting point: do what I'm going to do and simply stop going over things that are in neither of our powers to resolve. Move on, either avoid the other person if you can't say something with a productive outcome or approach them politely if you can, but either way, lets stop going over things like this. It's not helpful, it's not raising the level of discourse, and I can't see a single upside of us spending hours of our time playing he-said-she-said and sniping from a distance.
I'm going to disengage from this conversational thread, and I hope you will too. In the future, if you want to approach me with helpful, concrete suggestions as to how we can improve things we're currently doing (rather than things we did between 2 months and a year ago) I'm happy to listen to them. If you simply come along to try and rehash old disputes, or to make complaints based in bad faith rather than good faith this isn't such a complaint. I'm just noting the boundaries precisely I'm going to ignore you. I'd hope that, if our roles were reversed, you'd do the same. Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 10:23, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ironholds.
Looks like I'm knee-deep in teh shizzle yet again, and the incoming tide is washing the those "Bondi Cigars" my way.
To my way of thinking, "welcome" messages serve two purposes. The first is to be genuinely welcoming to this collaborative project. The second is to say, "No fricken way, asshat. Read the terms and conditions, follow them, or go elsewhere".
In my opinion, that one instance may fall into the into the second category.--Shirt58 (talk) 12:05, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, on review I'm not sure specifically what data was from which article, possibly some of the things in references might go under external links, I just figured that the news articles helped to establish the notability of the club and that they might contain additional data that could be incorporated. Beyond the basic outline I was not sure what data would be considered important enough to include though. Ranze (talk) 01:17, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm really unfamiliar with how, like it was mostly to establish that the place existed and was notable enough to be covered in newspapers. I heard of it because it was mentioned several times on the televised broadcast of the Olympic games, which even showed video clips of the studio. I think it was on CTV so I should see if they have an article covering it also, but I'm not sure if they'd mention in article form what they dwelled on around a minute in a TV broadcast. About the speedy deletion for the article (Manara Boys' Language school)[edit]

This page is not unambiguously promotional, because :
1- All information which has been included in this article aims to give the useful input for Egyptian students about this school.
2- I need more time for making the best edit for this page. 3- I followed the same steps which has been made by other teachers in other schools in making this article in order to enrich the topic List of schools in Egypt, Because our goal is to make this topic the biggest encyclopedia about schools in Egypt by 2013.
4- Personally, I didn't mean at all to advertise to this school by anyway and I'm sorry if it was happened accidentally.
5- Examples for some article I saw before making this topic : Collège de la Sainte Famille, St. George's College, Cairo, Ramses College.
6- I hope if there's anyway to retype the article and help teachers and student in Egypt without removing the article, It would be my pleasure.
7- Finally, Thank you for reading my comment Ironholds.

Bettina Wulff and a sock puppet[edit]

There are two problems with the article in question (Bettina Wulff):

  • Firstly, there is continuous vandalism by Mootros(talk) who apparently wants to censor the reference to a book which is very emphatically and controversially discussed. Its precise contents left aside, it is a most relevant source of information w.r.t. to the subject. I personally don't own it but I simply can't get around its significance. I have contacted talk twice using the appropriate templates.
  • Secondly, the two accounts Mootros(talk) and Tiderolls are used by the same person. On my talk page, Tiderolls denies the aforesaid match, but I think you ought to have a look into the matter.

So, I would appreciate if you could lend a helping hand. Regards, Akolyth (talk) 06:10, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As regards the second issue, I clearly have made a mistake. Naturally, I have already made amends. But still the issue of continuous vandalism by Mootros remains. Regards, Akolyth (talk) 06:52, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That doesn't appear to be vandalism, and I'm not sure if it's wrong. Publishing is not the same as writing, even if it's an autobiography. Can I suggest a middle ground? Something like "In 2012 Wulff's autobiography, Jenseits des Protokolls (English: Beyond protocol) was published. Co-authored by Wulff, the book rejects these rumours" or something? Ironholds (talk) 13:03, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, Yunshui has already suggested the same, so I think that shall be it. Regards, Akolyth (talk) 08:01, 21 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oliver, Oliver, Oliver. You know I have to give you a hard time with this edit. Placing a BLP unsourced tag when 4 refs are present. This is a shame. The person in charge of the new Page Curation doesn't know the rules on how to use it. I think one has been working too long for the WMF and your head is full of WMF lies. :)

On a side note, the article was put up for speedy deletion before you got there. I've caught four speedy deletes on professional footballers by four different new editors in the past two days. Kostas Skoupras had three reasons listed including no content. The newbies are seeing a shiny new tool and playing with it. I've noticed an uptick of new editors causing problems. Bgwhite (talk) 05:21, 21 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

They're external links, not references! It's an important distinction ;p. It's interesting that there are so many new editors - we haven't actually gone very far to advertise it recently :S. You seen the deletion tag log, right? A useful place to trawl for good and bad tagging, I've found. Ironholds (talk) 05:25, 21 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The editor who place the Speedy on Kostas Skoupras had 23 total edits. I guess it was in the intertubes that Page Curation is the greatest thing since sliced bread or you are paying people. The Welsh will doing anything underhanded to get noticed.
My daily routine is to look at all the new biographies created. Not only do I see alot of crap and 1,000,000 new football articles created everyday, I get to see the tags placed. The worst is the BLPProd tag because it is misleading. Most editors think there has to be no reliable refs, but the rules say no refs whatsoever. I leave a note to 3-4 editors a week about this. Bgwhite (talk) 05:49, 21 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
To be fair, the BLP-PROD guideline itself is very confusing :S. It opens with "Unlike standard proposed deletion, the BLP deletion template may be removed only after the biography contains a reliable source that supports at least one statement made about the person in the article.", which makes it sound like not having one reliable source is the standard for adding a tag. A little rewording could go a long way, methinks :). Ironholds (talk) 05:51, 21 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yea, that is what I was trying to say my "misleading". It is a very confusing page. It also doesn't help that the standard kept changing last year. Bgwhite (talk) 06:10, 21 September 2012 (UTC)>>[reply]
How does the first paragraph of WP:BLPPROD look now? Bgwhite (talk) 06:23, 21 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It still is causing confusion. But hey, they are accusing me of altering WP:BLPPROD yesterday for an arguement I got into the past hour. Oh joy. Bgwhite (talk) 21:54, 21 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Musicology in Cuba[edit]

Dear Wikipedia collaborator., Would it be possible for you to elaborate on the affirmation that this article about Musicology in Cuba may be "too techical for many people to understand" and that "its tone may not be 'encyclopedic'"; so I may be able to modify it in order to improve it? I repectfuly disagree with you on those comments, since I asume that Wikipedia is not for necessarily written for a low academic level readership; and also that some articles may be necessarely directed to a specific area of knowledge that may require some information, and not for "everybody". It is also possible to add further articles about specific subjects that may enlight some people interested in expanding their knowledge on the subject. I sincerely appreciate your feedback.Ernesto53 (talk) 20:20, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly. Wikipedia is written for the world - this means that its prose style should be understandable by the average human being. I would not describe these people as of a "low academic level"; I've got a law degree, and "The richness and importance of the Cuban musical patrimony deserves careful study and documentation. Throughout the years, the Cuban nation has developed a wealth of musicological material created by numerous investigators and experts on this subject." makes me pause for a second. I don't think I've ever seen "patrimony" used on Wikipedia, for example ;p.
At the same time there's a wider issue of tone. Wikipedia is a neutral encyclopedia: we do not pronounce judgment on the validity or value of an area, we let the sources pronounce that. Statements like "the richness and importance ... deserves careful study and documentation" is sort of a problem: first because it makes it sound like you, as a writer, are describing the field as "rich and important" based on your own experiences, and secondly because the "deserves careful study and documentation" is an example of breaking the fourth wall. Inquiry[edit]

Hallo! I just started editing Wikipedia, and I was a bit curious: how come even though anyone can edit Wikipedia, nobody puts bad or fake content on here? It appears so easy to put something like "Blah blah is stupid": so why doesn't anyone do it? Honor code or something? Btw, I asked because I saw your name on a list of "administrators" -- what are they? Honestly, this Wikipedia stuff is really cool, but... I'm still mystified as to how it all works. I wrote you back... I am using the dot-dots when I write a new message to indent it... is that right? 167.29.4.150 (talk) 19:54, 23 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yep; that's correct :). Ironholds (talk) 23:11, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You are losing it....

IMDb is an unreliable source. Which is why we have the {{BLP IMDb refimprove}} tag. Bgwhite (talk) 23:19, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I restored the PROD tag. Removal of a BLP-PROD requires there to be a reliable source that supports at least one statement in the article. This wasn't true in this case. I searched for a reliable source to replace it, but found only unreliable websites like this one (unofficial website run by a random person). I ended up giving up the search because I don't feel that she is notable anyways. Ryan Vesey 23:25, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
IMDb is unreliable now? That seems to change every damn two months. Sigh. Thanks for picking up my blunder, the both :). Ironholds (talk) 23:28, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I go out of my way just to look for your blunders because there are so many of them. :) Bgwhite (talk) 23:45, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I hope that was a joke. In any case, I know that a long time ago I added references to unreferenced BLP's using IMDB not understanding that it was unreliable. If anyone can think of a way to easily find those and tag them it would be great. Ryan Vesey 23:49, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It was a joke. Giving Oliver a hard time is a highlight of my day. Bgwhite (talk) 00:50, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm too lazy to create a section, but I'm probably going to the UK this summer. The program information isn't up yet but how would you rank those schools? Ryan Vesey 01:06, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    Which schools? Ironholds (talk) 03:19, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • You got a Fullbright Scholarship?! Nicely done, sir! So, Durham and King's are probably the best out of that list unless you really want to be in Northern Ireland. It depends what you're studying - King's is more of an all-round place (and you get to be in London!) while Durham is excellent for the more artsy courses. Ironholds (talk) 03:35, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • Not yet, and it's a different aspect of the Fulbright program I believe. I'll just spend a portion of my summer in the UK, possibly get one school credit, then go home. I still need to apply, but I just thought I'd get some ideas on the different places. King's caught my eye too. Ryan Vesey 03:39, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
      • King's generally rocks - really, all the UoL system does. And if/when you come over, I must buy you beer. You've accumulated quite the WMF fanclub. Ironholds (talk) 03:40, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
        • I'm not entirely positive I could handle one. I hear your glasses are bigger over in the UK and I haven't gotten around to an American one yet. Ryan Vesey 03:48, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Rediff Shopping page[edit]

Hi,

I was surprised that you have marked the Rediff Shopping page for deletion. The page is purely informational and provides general information about the portal. It focuses on it's establishment and it's business model. It is never an advertisement. i request you to kindly please lift the deletion and let the Rediff Shopping page remain active.

Thank you Pratik Jain — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pratik.s.jain (talkcontribs) 04:48, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) It would help if the article used some references. It's not organized using sections, (see Help:Section) it contains claims that are not supported by any references, (see WP:VERIFY) and some of the details aren't notable (see WP:notability). It could be a Wikipedia article, but not in its current form. • Jesse V.(talk) 05:21, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Leah Gibson BARNSTAR[edit]

  • Thanks so very much! The barnstar had an uplifting effect ^_^

Can you delete this for me?[edit]

Ironholds, per WP:GCSD G7 and WP:BLANK, if you would be so kind as to delete User:Jesse V./monobook.js and User:Jesse V./vector.js, I'd sure appreciate it. I'm unlikely to ever use them, so they might as well be deleted to save space on the servers or something. I don't know any other admins. Thanks, • Jesse V.(talk) 20:32, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Gone :). It doesn't actually save space - the data is still there, just not displayed when someone asks for the page. Ironholds (talk) 20:36, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So it saves bandwidth, and it makes my subpage list look better. Fair enough. Thanks. • Jesse V.(talk) 20:38, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

barnstar[edit]

Thank you very much for the Barnstar you gave me.--Mjs1991 (talk) 12:03, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You also mentioned about an "autopatrolled" right in the barnstar. What is that?

Autopatrolled status[edit]

Thank you for the barnstar and autopatrolled status, I will try not to let you down. I have not been able to create very many new articles recently because of real world job conflicts, but I can always hope that will sort itself out and I can get back to what I enjoy most. Again, thank you for your vote of confidence. Cheers... Cuprum17 (talk) 14:38, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Contact[edit]

Hiyo. I saw your comments in the Signpost, and went over to ramble at length at Wikipedia talk:Contact us#"Main contact address". I'm not sure how helpful any of that will be, but option #1 might be the kind of thing you or maryana are able to push forward? Not sure, just a thought. ttfn, —Quiddity (talk) 18:35, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly Maryana, but only with community consensus; I'm more the shiny software guy ;p. Sweet! I'll look in on it in my personal capacity. Ironholds (talk) 19:28, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Very nice work[edit]

very nice work in the discussion at WP:Wikipedia Signpost/2012-09-24/In the media in defending our principles, while recognizing our limits. DGG ( talk ) 18:57, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks :). Ironholds (talk) 19:28, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Carolyn Jarvis[edit]

user talk:Samanthajayne77 who is an associate of Carolyn Jarvis (works for her and is COI) and I have been rewriting the Carolyn Jarvis article in Talk:Carolyn Jarvis/Draft. Samantha and I have been communicating primarily via email. I have been primarily adding links and formatting. As well as offering some MOS advise although I am not overly qualified to do so. The re-write seems ready and I wanted to ask a reviewer (you) if you think it would be OK to overwrite the CJ article with the draft. Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 20:40, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

So, I see a lot of prose without inline citations :S. Any way that could be cleared up? And have you verified with Samantha that she owns the copyright to release that image, or has permission to do so? :). Ironholds (talk) 21:29, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'll get the prose cleaned up. Re the image: had a number of emails regarding seeking counsel, so I a pretty sure she has permission. The "personal rights" was brought up, so it sounds like she spoke to them. Should I request an email from their attorneys? Thanks for looking into this. Jim1138 (talk) 21:34, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It might be nice to get them to run through OTRS just to give it the official stamp of approval. If you can let me know the email subject line or something I'm happy to handle it myself to fast-track it. Ironholds (talk) 21:56, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hello - Global News owns the rights to this photo and I have the right and approvals to distribute it. Thanks! Samanthajayne77 (talk) 22:01, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And to release it under a free license so that anyone can use it without paying? Ironholds (talk) 22:08, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
FYI: User talk:Corporate Minion has copied Talk:Carolyn Jarvis/Draft to Carolyn Jarvis "per request" (not mine, nothing on his talk). I will make sure that the licence is valid and update some of that prose. Any more requests / pointers? Thanks for all your help. Jim1138 (talk) 00:45, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Great; looks fine, otherwise :). Let me know if you need any help in the future! Ironholds (talk) 01:11, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The new season of 16x9 starts tomorrow / Friday. The apparent reason for the rush. Thank again Jim1138 (talk) 01:23, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, I took out the image temporarily until the copyright is squared away. I'm sure Samantha is probably correct, but I also see how sometimes the copyright holder may have a different perspective. It would be best to run it through OTRS by getting the copyright holder to email permissions-commons@wikimedia.org confirming it's ok to upload it under a free copyright, like Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 3.0 (what I usually use).

The article could be further improved with in-line citations, an image on a transparent background to avoid the white box, and with a proper summary per WP:LEAD, however I didn't think any of these were required to move it to article-space. Corporate 01:37, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I spent a good hour giving the article a closer cull-through and making the improvements mentioned above. I was pleased to find a good-faith newbie COI that provided content worth salvaging and was open to help.
BTW - I recently expanded the request edit templates and created a draft project page. Not that it's that important, but there is a {{request edit | R}} template now for proposed re-writes. I suppose the basic template works just as well. I've also encouraged feedback on the Talk page of the draft project page about the templates and overall process. Corporate 13:33, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Everyone, Yes... the photo is to be used without paying. It is a publicity photo and meant to be distributed to the press (Wikipedia Included). Also, I would like to thank Corporate, Ironholds, and Jim1138 for all of your help! I could not have done this without it!

Samanthajayne77 (talk) 14:09, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I will still submit an email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org for use. I'd like to make sure that we support you on your end.

Do you have a link to a place where the image is provided in a press room or press kit? That is one avenue for the image as well. Corporate 15:47, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I do. You will need to have a username and password to have access to the press site as well. Does that still count even though it can not be accessed by the general public? http://shawmediatv.ca/networks/global/news/?607
I suppose so. I added a non-free use tag as a promotional image. I think that's kosher, but not 100% sure. Corporate 23:51, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you -- "George Mann"[edit]

Thank you for your encouragement. It means a great deal to me. Brad Smith (talk) 14:23, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ironholds, Thanks a lot for the Barnstar for the Charge at Irbid, I really appreciate your interest and encouragement. Thanks again, and all the best, --Rskp (talk) 01:03, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No problem :). Ironholds (talk) 01:50, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I appreciate it. It was a pleasure surprise.--SGCM (talk) 12:11, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What a nice surprise[edit]

Thanks for the barnstar. I've only just started editing and creating pages and I'm finding it fun, so it's nice to get a barnstar so early on! Cheers! George Putland (talk) 14:03, 29 September 2012 (GMT)

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Barnstar of Diligence
You have done a tremendous amount of work to improve things, with real (positive, mostly :P) impact. For your effort and frustration, I award you this Barnstar of Diligence. Enjoy the well-deserved break. wctaiwan (talk) 16:53, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I plan to spend my week off patrolling and writing articles :). Ironholds (talk) 01:00, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
