Request reason:

Caught by a web host block but this host or IP is not a web host. I am at a friends house, and I have been editing Wikipedia for a while, and I am a trusted user with CheckUser (I think). Hungryce (talk) 19:38, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but I'm not going to unblock. Try again after you get back from your friend's house. Incidentally, you're not a checkusuer. PhilKnight (talk) 23:09, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for December 2[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited The Lesson (2014 Latvian film), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page DCP. Such links are almost always unintended since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Manual of Style[edit]

Be aware that WP:MOS is widely watched by people with a range of opinions, and changes to it need to be carefully vetted. If you have a general scheme to improve it, I'd try proposing that on the talk page first. Dicklyon (talk) 02:43, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Also, while I appreciate some of the "WP:GNOME" tweaks you made, many of both the substantive changes and trivial-looking wording tweaks were not acceptable. In dozens of cases, you mistook the intended meaning, mistook the structure of the sentence (many of your comma insertions radically altered the meaning), did something ungrammatical, or did something against MoS's own explicit instructions (e.g. using typesetter's or "American" quotation style instead of logical quotation). In many other cases, they were "fiddly" and didn't improve the text even when they were not outright problematic. I don't fault you for trying; my own first attempt at editing that page looked very similar! I also don't agree with blanket reverts on the basis of "it's too hard to keep the good stuff and throw out what there's no consensus for" (i.e. "I'm lazy, so I'm gonna revert all your work"). Consequently, I took the time to restore some your genuinely constructive edits and made a few others inspired by them. So, thanks for taking your first major MoS editing step. I strongly agree with Dicklyon that it's best to propose significant changes on the talk page, especially if they're programmatic. For one thing, WP uses "normal" on purpose, not "typical"; it's a house style guideline explicitly intended to set editing norms here, not describe what's typical at other publications. Similarly, we frequently use "generally" for the particular reason that exceptions have been identified and resulted in rancorous disputes, for which "generally" accounts (and its use in the guideline forestalls many repeated arguments). MoS is just a guideline, and there will always be exceptions to it. When those exceptions rarely if every come up, and/or in cases where consensus has rejected attempts to assert an exception previously, MoS uses more emphatic language. Hope this helps.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  22:32, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I am quite new at editing although I have been on Wikipedia for a while. I found that I am superb at finding grammar problems and fixing some of the simple ones. I guess it was not the best so try with WP:MOS. I really appreciate your comments. I am hoping to become a better editor and you comments have gone a long way to that. Thanks so much! Hungryce (talk) 00:28, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to thank you for taking the time to find the constructive edits I did and readd them. Thanks! Hungryce (talk) 00:40, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I second the thanks to SMcCandlish for having more patience than I, and for helping you get the better parts of your edit accepted. Welcome to WP. Dicklyon (talk) 02:42, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. I meant WP:GNOME not "GOME" above; fixed the link. Many of the MoS editors are mostly wikignomes, though I think all of us create articles and seriously expand others here and there as well. As for being a better editor on the small, copy-editing stuff in articles themselves, I think paying careful attention to MoS's comma, quotation, and hyphen vs. dash rules (which are a hybrid of many systems, internationally, and lean toward the academic, not journalist side) is a good place to start. WP is not nearly as comma-laden as some humanities writing, but uses more commas than some science writing and some non-North American journalism (and more hyphens than a lot of science/medical journal output, and more dashes than journalism ...). It's also crucial to familiarizing yourself with WP:MOSNUM in particular. WP style has many particularities, especially from technical fields. Logical quotation is only the most of obvious one, and many of them are in MOSNUM, chief among them probably the handling of units and symbols. MOS:CAPS and MOS:ITALICS are also pretty essential; probably the #1 cause of style disputes (especially in article titles) is the desire to overcapitalize based on specialized-source tendencies (insider style in house organs and promotional material). Another common thing to watch out for is that encyclopedic writing often uses passive voice, for WP:NPOV reasons, when other writing would not. A journalist might write "Johnson shot Jackson in the head, and stole his wallet.", based on the jury verdict, even if it was controversial. WP might write "Jackson was shot in the head, and his wallet was stolen. Johnson was convicted of both crimes.", any controversy exists about the evidence and conviction. (Absent such a controversy, we'd probably write "Johnson was convicted of shooting Jackson in the head and stealing his wallet.") As for MoS itself, the two most common flaws I saw in your long edit at MoS were insertion of commas robotically, in ways that changed the meaning of the sentences; and making word substitutions that did so even more strongly – not every pair of words that are synonymous in some contexts are in all of them. But happy editing, and don't sweat it. The main thing to remember about MoS is it's not a form of WP:TRUTH about any (or most) off-wiki style, but a consensus about how we write here, a playbook of rules and compromises we agree to, to get on with writing instead of arguing about how to write. The only people who do poorly at MoS are those who will not listen to consensus and insist that a rule they're familiar with is the only correct way to do it, or that MoS should permit any well-attested style as equally valid with any other, despite consensus that some styles communicate better than others. PS: What often happens after a reverted copy edit (at MoS or in articles) is the change's proponent makes a talk page post along the lines of "I think this phrasing is really awkward: '[offending passage quoted here]'. It has the following problems ...", and this then results in people either agreeing the change is OK now that the understand the rationale, or suggesting a different one. Often a passage will be restructured completely instead of a word or a bit of punctuation changed, if the problem reported is real, but the proposed initial solution isn't agreeable.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  03:24, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Don't mass-reformat talk pages[edit]

Please do not repeat edits like this one to discussion pages. As you can see from that link, it produces horribly cluttered diffs that make little to no difference to the rendered page, and so is considered disruptive. Thanks. Anomie 22:51, 24 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
