Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, Guyfixsen. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the page Guy Fixsen, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. TheSandDoctor Talk 16:22, 26 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

March 2020[edit]

Information icon Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment, or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Thank you. TheSandDoctor Talk 17:14, 27 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I see the comment that you made at the deletion discussion listing 13 sources. I just wanted to make you aware of the reliable sources guideline on Wikipedia. Per WP:CIRCULAR, Wikipedia (and other websites that mirror its content) cannot be a reference for wikipedia articles, WikiLinkinging on the other hand is allowed and preferred. IMDb is considered a questionable source in most instances as it relies heavily on volunteer contributed content. Discogs is also not a reliable source and neither is Amazon. I would encourage you to review this (non-exhaustive) supplement to the reliable sources guideline that I linked earlier. It provides examples of reliable, questionable, and unreliable sources (as well as notes on them). I understand that Wikipedia can be a very confusing place and do remember when I was new (2017) just has confusing it was. I promise that it does get easier with time and as you learn more through reading policies/guidelines and improving articles on Wikipedia. The teahouse is also always happy to answer questions that you may have about getting started, as am I. Please do feel free to drop me (or the Teahouse) a line if you have any questions. I am certainly happy to help where I can. --TheSandDoctor Talk 17:29, 27 March 2020 (UTC) {{help me}} So what is the difference between putting a link to Wikipedia in the form: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Only_Shallow and Only_Shallow ? And why would that be considered any less circular?Guyfixsen (talk) 17:44, 27 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I wasn't clear on that, my apologies. Basically, existing wikipedia articles cannot be used as references within other wikipedia articles. That is the intension of WP:CIRCULAR. Usually when people link them as such, they are intending to just link them in the text. When linking to another article within its text (see The Rolling Stones or any other well developed article for examples), the "Only Shallow" way is strongly preferred. WP:EXT is the content guideline governing this latter distinction and explains in more detail. --TheSandDoctor Talk 18:05, 27 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Help[edit]

{{help me}} Can you please explain what the recently added comment on the deletion discussion means?:

Draftify per norms because of WP:COI. It needs to go through via WP:AFC.--KartikeyaS (talk) 06:00, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

I don't understand 'draftify per norms' or what it means to 'go through via WP:AFC"

Is it clear in this discussion that I did not create the BLP?

Is it also clear that a paragraph of the BLP has been mysteriously deleted around the same time that the nomination was enacted?

Thanks!

Hi Guy. Personally, I thought you were pretty harshly treated as a newbie in that AfD. Apologies, not all of Wikipedia is like that (well, not always).
Per your question above, you might find it useful to read the pages Wikipedia:Drafts ("draftify") and Wikipedia:Articles for creation ("WP:AfC").
The editing history of the Guy Fixsen article shows that you were not the creator, and also the section that was removed (although only administrators can see those now the article has been deleted). It's a REALLY good idea to read the Wikipedia:Conflict of interest article, if you haven't already. And TheSandDoctor already gave you a pointer to our page about reliable sources.
Once again, sorry about the way things went in the AfD. Thanks for all the great music. Shout up if you have any questions, either here or on my talk page. Thanks :) — sparklism hey! 21:16, 2 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Sparklism. Thanks, I appreciate the support. Yes I did read the COI and other articles and I think I get how it all works to a certain extent now. I probably should have read up a bit before I tried any editing but hey, you live you learn.. My intention was genuinely to improve WP in a small way but instead I managed to annoy the hive mind to a surprising extent! Funny thing was that when I signed-up last week, I was immediately blocked because my username was "a well-known living person". Then, ironically, my BLP is deleted because I'm not well-known! It will all go in the memoirs lol.
I do have a huge pile of physical press from the 90s and 00s, some of which would no doubt constitute good reliable sources but obviously I'm not allowed to use it and I daresay no-one will be motivated to do the work so I guess the BLP will remain deleted. So it goes.

Guyfixsen (talk) 21:55, 2 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You are (relatively) well-known through your work. The question is: do you meet the Wikipedia criteria for having your own article? There are a few different criteria to look at:
If you do have some sources and want to share them, then hit me up either on here, my talk page or via email from my userpage and if I think these meet the guidelines described above then I'll be happy to help get a new Guy Fixsen article up and running. Thanks! — sparklism hey! 08:52, 3 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

OK. I will have a rummage through my old press etc and see what I have. Most of it will be interviews or features that talk about/with Margaret and myself regarding Laika but there will be plenty of sections that relate to my production/engineering work specifically. I have certainly contributed solo to a lot of articles and books about My Bloody Valentine! Thankyou, I will be in touch.Guyfixsen (talk) 11:34, 3 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
