Impersonation

I wondered when you'd show up, Gurch. You realise you could face a permanent block for impersonation of a much-liked and trusted Wikipedian? Nevertheless, I shall be content with a warning. Dispute resolution won't be necessary, actually. I will personally see to it that you are blocked from Wikipedia if you do step out of line, and I can assure you that impersonation of another Wikipedian is viewed most dimly by the Wikipedia community. After reading the thoroughly reasonable and downright pleasant comment you placed on User talk:NicholasTurnbull, I would like to apologise for jumping to conclusions, Gurch. Clearly your intentions are neither to discredit me nor to damage the wiki, and I was unaware that you'd been contributing for so long. Gurch did mention it, perhaps, but it would have slipped.

The initial worry of mine was that the nickname Gurch had come back to haunt me - as you know, I'm not that person any more, and haven't been for a long time.

Main Page vandalism

No, the vandalism was not done by an admin. It was, however, the fault of a newbie admin that neglected to protect it, and who I will righteously admonish shortly. The version you saw that said 'protected' was cached on the vandalized version (in fact it had actually already been reverted to the non-vandal version by someone before me), and so I purged the cache to fix it for everyone.--Pharos 12:46, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

Boilerplates/Templates

Hi, could you tell me why you removed some of the templates I placed on a couple of articles? In my reasoning, it shouldn't really matter as the articles get added to categories when the templates are added so people interested in those areas will work on the specific thing they are interested in? Participant alert regarding Wikiproject on Advertising

The Wikiproject No Ads, created as a backlash against the Answers.com deal, has served an important function in providing a space for users to express their disagreement with the Foundation proposal. While the current controversies about userboxes raise questions about political and social advocacy on Wikipedia, there should be greater flexibility regarding advocacy about Wikipedia in the Wikipedia namespace. Reported and linked by Slashdot and other press sources as a unique and spontaneous occurence in Wikipedia history, it has apparently had some impact as, despite being scheduled to begin in January, not a peep has been heard about the trial and proposed sponsored link since the deal's controversial announcement months ago. Currently, however, there is an attempt to delete the project or move it off Wikipedia altogether. Since the Foundation has provided no additional information and has not attempted to answer the specific questions that participants in the project raised, it is unclear if the Answers.com deal has been abandoned or simply delayed. Let me reiterate that with respect to Muse (band) on which you have reverted the spelling "apparantly" twice now, in the context of a block quoted press release that is clearly littered with mistakes. If you're using some sort of automated process, then you need to take more care. Railway station articles

Hi,

I notice that you're creating large numbers of near-identical articles for relatively minor railway stations. Are these necessary? They appear doomed to perma-stub status, which indicates that they should not be separate articles in the first place.

Bot flag

Hi there Gurch! I wanted to let you know that you need to apply for a bot flag to be running such frequent edits. Wikipedia:Bots is the place to check this out; for now you can put your name under 'bots running without a flag'. Until you get this flag, please keep your edits to no more than a few a minute. Heya Gurch. The word bot implies any form of systematic machine assisted editing - usually this means in a quick and efficent fashion. You can ask Wikipedia_talk:Bots if you'd like to see if your case applies, but I am guessing you've made 5000+ minor edits in close succession with the help of some sort of programing. The fact that it is manually assisted by you the user makes the people over at Wikipedia:Bots much happier I'm sure, as no automatic spell checker is 100% accurate.

The 'bot flag' makes your changes not appear on 'recent changes'. In a way this keeps it clear for the admins to see if any kind of weird stuff is going down (used to observe possible vandalism, attacks, mistakes, lots of stuff). If your making 6 edits a minute thats gonna clog that log/tool for those who need it for important things. Secondly it means your operating under a edit policy that is clearly defined for those who are concerned of abuses. Finally, it keeps admins from knowing your not trying to mess stuff up, which some bots can come off as.

As for if you need to make a new account I'm not positive, but it just makes the person and the function seperate for everyone's sanity. Again, I'd ask Wikipedia_talk:Bots about this.

I'll leave a similar message to User:Fuhghettaboutit and User:Cmdrjameson about their editing if it is indeed necessary, but I didn't single you out by any means, I just noticed. Regardless of whether or not they've been editing at a speed too fast to do without a bot flag, it does not make your absence of the same OK.

1WW Refactor

You were gracious enough to comment on 1WW; as you may know there are now seven competing proposals. On April 6 I suggested that I be permitted to refactor the proposal page into a single, unified proposal. It's my belief that most of us are tending toward the same or a similar restriction on wheel warring. I think it's unwieldy, though, as it stands. A fair number of editors have commented on these distinct versions but (precisely because they are so similar) no single one has gained undisputed consensus. I suggest that a single, improved version may fare better on its way to policy.

Just as I proposed the refactor, an editor brought to our attention yet another competing proposal, which I merged into the others, using the same format. Still another proposal has since been added, bringing the total to 7. The two new proposals are encountering an indifferent reception but they, too, have some merit.

At the time I suggested refactor, I also put myself forward as the editor to write the initial draft, based on the plurality of support for "my" version. Since the two new proposals have been added, this plurality has held.

I don't for a moment feel that this gives me any special right to dictate terms; rather I hope to draft a proposal uniting the best features of existing proposals. Unlike any of the seven currently competing versions, this refactor will be open to editing immediately by any editor. I will ask editors to refrain from supporting or opposing the new draft for the time being; instead, to edit the proposal to reflect their specific concerns. I believe the true consensus policy will then emerge, in true wiki fashion. After all, we're not so far apart.

I come to your talk page today to ask for your comment on this refactor. Clearly this will be a major change to the proposal page and I don't feel comfortable being quite that bold without some expression of interest in the idea. Once the new draft is in place, I hope also for your participation to polish it into a true expression of our values. Let's move forward with this complement to WP:3RR.
