Thanks, I am having fun. --G77 (talk) 02:09, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I was planning to tackle the whole of criminal damage after I'd finished with the Theft Act 1968 & related offences, but you are right; that section needs major input. Perhaps I'll take a detour & list that for tomorrow. --Rodhullandemu (Talk) 01:34, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've had a further look at this- UK law is now contained in Criminal Damage Act 1971 with arson as a special aggravated case of damage, so perhaps there should be a reference to there for current law, with some history in the Arson article. --Rodhullandemu (Talk) 03:22, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

<-- Generally
It occurred to me while rewriting Burglary that there might be a case for splitting out Burglary in English Law as a separate article since that portion now dominates the article; however, this would imply a case for separating Burglary in US Law. Doing both would leave the article skeletal in the extreme. The problem I have seen is that the legal articles tend to reflect editor's interests and prevalence so you will always see largeish US & UK sections but usually minimal coverage of elsewhere- I'm sure, for example, that Chinese and Russian law will prohibit burglary, but have no idea how to deal with that. However, concentrating on the common-law jurisdictions, I intend to look at sources such as Hale, Coke & Blackstone for their definitions, and this might provide the common thread . Perhaps in general, we could have

  1. Introduction - the old common law
  2. X in US law - depending on volume, either a statement of the law or a brief exposition and link to a "X in US law" separate article
  3. X in English law - as above
  4. X in other CL jurisdictions, e.g. variations in Canada, USA, etc
  5. X in non-CL jurisdictions

as appropriate? This would establish a framework to work with. The Law project seems a little quiet, I rarely see other editors, but I guess we should mention these proposals on the talk page to see if there are any criticisms of this approach. Please let me know your thinking. --Rodhullandemu (Talk) 10:59, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for getting back to me, and I very much appreciate your comment with respect to burglary. Ideally, I would hope that this would be a model for articles about the common law crimes, which tend to be somewhat universal in definition. Sadly, I haven't had time to amplify arson with respect to UK law, but I'm glad you've now reminded me of it. Functionally, I think that criminal damage would need looking at first, as arson is a special case thereof, as I said above. --Rodhullandemu (Talk) 23:47, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
