Image deletion of File:Arianne Jone Luge Headshot.png[edit]
Hi! I'm the content expert for your class and I received a notice that said that File:Arianne Jone Luge Headshot.png was deleted from the commons. I thought I'd explain why, since I know that this can be disappointing.
The deletion rationale says that it's a copyright violation, which means that the image you uploaded was taken from another source. Images that have been previously published elsewhere are assumed to be copyrighted unless they fall within the public domain or were released under a creative compatible creative commons license. If the image doesn't fall under either category and is copyrighted to a person or organization/business, it cannot be uploaded without their permission or without it fitting into a very specific fair use rationale.
This would be the case even if the image is very widely disseminated and discussed. To cite a personal example, a while back I created an article (under my main account) on Keshia Thomas, a black woman who protected an alleged KKK member from getting beaten up by people protesting a KKK rally. A photographer took pictures of her actions and the image is considered to be extremely iconic and is discussed in multiple classes in different formats. I uploaded a copy of the picture under the idea that since the image was so widely used, that it would fall under some form of fair use. This ended up not being the case, as the image in question was nominated as a copyright violation and had to be deleted.
