Solar car

Something about this being a "one year college project."

The phrase was "one year's student project". Not about solar power. Not about Solar cars. Not about the University of Michigan or its college of engineering. Not even about the competition or the team participating: One freaking year's entry from 13 years ago AND a meaninglessly trivial text dump of statistics. The former is bad enough, but why in God's name is a separate article for specifications the tiniest bit necessary?

The two articles referenced have been edited so that they describe the Maize & Blue solar car which is part of the permanent collection at the Chicago Museum of Science & Industry. I would presume that if the curators deem the vehicle worthy of permanent display in their museum it would be worthy of mention on Wikipedia, but that is not my decision to make.

I believe it is sufficient to have a subsection on the UMSCT page for each car, as is done currently. The page for "Maize & Blue" has barely any addditional information, instead regurgitating information from the UMSCT page. ~Gertlex 03:19, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

There are a mere 60 words on the University of Michigan Solar Car Team page, which is hardly a complete let alone thorough history of Maize & Blue. You may also want to check out the Wikipedia articles on the GM Sunraycer which is also mentioned on the General Motors website with 50 words or the Nuna article about that solar car built by Delft University. The separate article describing a museum artifact seems accepted practice on Wikipedia.

Given the importance of the energy economy these days, and the potential importance of clean energy generation for the future, it is worthwhile to have information available on some of these early projects demonstrating people driving a car using such little power. The page provides a good summary of the vehicle design, the organization of the team, as well as a description of the race. The technical detail is complete enough to understand what this group of people did, and that's satisfying and important. This vehicle is a permanent display piece at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, and definitely deserves some Wikipedia time. --ESlimko 17:32, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Maize & Blue was built with two purposes in mind: to compete and win Sunrayce 93 (predecessor of North American Solar Challenge) and to compete in the 1993 World Solar Challenge. It was understood by both the team and the University that once these goals had been attempted (and hopefully completed) the University of Michigan Solar Car Team would move on to the next generation project. For this reason Maize and Blue as an entity and the project and people that surround it should have a spearate space from the University of Michigan Solar Car Team. Now, I'm not trying to imply that succesfully engineering, building and racing a solar powered vehicle and winning a national championship with it is the equivalent of putting a person on the moon (though it may have seemed that way to many of the students during the wee hours of morning many a day during the project) but I would like to draw the following analogy: The following hierarchy exists in Wikipedia: NASA → Project_Apollo → Apollo 11 (space project that put the first person on the moon). Using this logic wouldn't it then follow that this hierarchy would be just as acceptable: University of Michigan → University of Michigan Solar Car Team → 1993 "Maize & Blue" University of Michigan Solar Car Team. -- Bdelapen 21:42, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Editing guidelines

When linking to other wiki articles, use double brackets. Example: [[UM Solar Car Team]] NOT [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UM%20Solar%20Car%20Team UM Solar Car Team]

Use the Show preview button to see if your edit will have the desired result before submitting it. You've made a lot of small edits, so I'm assuming you aren't. Cool - well if you have any questions on any subject (technical or procedural) just gives us a shout on my talk page.

In terms of the 1993 "Maize & Blue" University of Michigan Solar Car article - normally such competition cars might not be noteworthy see WP:Notability, but it appears from the discussions on this talk page (see above) that it is noteworthy as a early project in the design of solar powered cars. So yes the issue is now more about getting the article up to scratch - and from my initial first look it looks good - well on the way to being an excellent Wikipedia entry. In fact I am normally quite critical but this seems very good to me - a couple of points:

1. Check out if it needs to be in any other Category or not see Wikipedia:Categorical_index
2. Get it added to the relevant Wikipedia:Wikiproject
3. Also the advise from Gertlex is spot on

One thing you need to remember about Wikipedia, is that a lot of people want to put a lot of rubbish and vanity press info onto it. Hence there are some dedicated people who go round questioning notability or asking for deletion such things. As long as you have a good reason why an article should exist you should have no problem - but if you ever do you there are ways and means of getting a community opinion/decision on such things.

Oh almost forgot - User talk pages versus Article talk pages. There is not really a right or wrong answer about which one to use when, but a good rule of thumb -

1. If there is an ongoing discussion about the content of an article it should be on the article talk page so saved for future editors to read through.
2. If about user conduct, or a quick notification of an issue in an article then the User talk page is fine.

The idea being that in a few years time when another editor comes along and wants to update an article all the issues that have previously discussed on content are easily available on article talk page (much harder to access it on user talk pages especially with archiving), but by keeping the personal arguments of points off the article talk into user talk it saves the article talk from being cluttered. Also seeHelp:Talk page

So in this case you may want to copy and paste the above section on notability into the article talk, while leaving the advise on technical editing issues from other users here. Cheers Lethaniol 18:25, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

So for example instead of 1.16 m^2 use $1.16m^{2}$ to get the latter write <math>1.16 m^2</math>

1993 "Maize & Blue" University of Michigan Solar Car Team Members

If you ever have a case like this where the information been merged and you want the page deleted, your best bet is to put a speedy deletion tag on the article instead of putting "Delete this page" on the article. The article could've sat there for weeks with that message on with no action being taken. But. Non-notable and seemingly defunct company. There are no reliable sources provided in the article. Searches turned up no coverage at all in reliable sources. Fails the WP:GNG and WP:NCORP.
