DoCB Initiative - verified/wikified

Caught your comments on a couple of the stubs I did for the project. ( I did a number of the Taschereau family plus some other folks). If I do any more, I will try to get the date thing straight..won't verify unless i do. I tried to figure out the template for dates but couldn't. My big problem is that I am on a land line for internet so I try to work off-line and then post articles fairly quickly. I need more time to look and learn...(santa didn't bring me the satellite hook-up I requested. :-) ) I am open to suggestions as to improving my input but do have the "air time" problem. DoCB copyvio?

They are copyvios, though, not like phone books, because they only include names that were specifically selected by that organization as being prominent people. • You are wrong, they do not copyright the list of names, they only assert a copyright on the biographies themselves, which we do not reproduce. The list was something *I* created (at great effort, and in a form that is nowhere used by DoCB) by extracting the names from all of the biographies. In any case, this is not a commercial enterprise that we are some way competing against... they say only that...

• • users exercise due diligence in ensuring the accuracy of the materials reproduced;
  • the Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online be identified as the source; and
  • the reproduction is not represented as an official version of the materials reproduced, or as having been made in affiliation with or with the endorsement of the University of Toronto, the Université Laval and the National Archives of Canada.

I do not believe that having a list is a copyright violation. I just took a look at the copyright notice. The second sentance of the link provided above states, "The biographies, for which the University of Toronto and the Université Laval hold the copyright, and the Web site are protected by the provisions of the Copyright Act, by Canadian laws, policies and regulations, and by international agreements." We haven't copied the biographies. So, we were fine in regards to the copyright. Also, I will move the Dictionary of Canadian Biography page back into the regular namespace. Question

Do the names as lited in (http://www.utoronto.ca/dcb-dbc/dcba/listOfSubjects/l.htm) correspond to the DoCB list of wiki fame in terms of format? (Stormbay 23:15, 20 January 2006 (UTC))

Stormbay, I'm not sure if I understand exactly what you mean, but the names are not in wikipedia format (i.e. wikified and in firstname lastname order), nor are they disambiguated as many of the DoCB names are, nor have they been "verified" as we have been doing when a wiki article is created. I was not aware of nor did I use those pages to create the DoCB list. I hope this helps answer your question. Fawcett5 16:46, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

Fawcett5, can I just check on your last statement where you said you didn't use the pages to create your list. How did you create the list? If you didn't simply copy that of the DoCB then there is no copyright infringement as you've generated the list seperately, and that probably is also true if you read the book and wrote out a list of people in it. DoCB Lists

For what it is worth, I have done a little research and do not agree that the pages are a copyvio. However, I can't find anyone who might carry some weight to stick their neck out and write a letter. Any progress? (or have you given up in disgust?) (Stormbay 22:30, 24 March 2006 (UTC))

• Maybe I overstated "expert" but I was having a conversation with a lawyer friend of mine and I brought up the subject. (Bear in mind that free advice is worth what you pay for it). He has spent 30 +/- years in a firm that does mostly corporate stuff which has included copyright issues. He said that, if it is essentially a list, it is no different than a telephone directory. In a telephone directory, everyone has access to the use of the list which in turn is used to actually access the product. (I should have written it down but that's the gist of it). I don't think this adds anything new to the argument and I apologize if I raised some expectations in my note above. My guess would be that this is no big deal to the DoCB people. Bio Box Reverted

I see that you have reverted my addition of the Biography Project box to talk pages for Laurier Lapierre and Gordie Howe. It seemed to me that these articles both qualified for that project. Is there some reason why including them in the bio project proposal would not be appropriate? Ahh, I think I just figured it out. It looks like I put them on the main page by mistake. Please stop blind reverting this article into an attack article. Your version does nothing to establish notability of this individual, and would require the deletion of the article. Furthermore, it violates the terms of WP:BIO... you can have controversy in a biography, but you cannot have an article that is solely an attack peice, no matter how sourced your material is. As you should have been able to ascertain with even a moment's inspection of the wikipedia articles history, the item at www.ulsterhistory.co.uk was lifted verbatim from wikipedia, not the other way around. Note how their article includes items that were added to the wikipediaarticle by third parties weeks or months after the initial creation by me. Remember, this IS a free licence encyclopedia, people can and do copy US all the time. Be a bit more thorough next time before tossing around serious and unfounded accusations. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. The source is a secondarey source not specifying where it got the image so the image is in practice sourceless. The {{PD-US}} template assumes that the image was first published in the US another calim which would need to be substantiated with a source. However it is true that a photograph of someone who died in 1884 is likely to be PD-old (assuming that the photograph didn't outlive Engellman by 52 years in which case it is copyrighted) so I will therefore let the case rest. /Lokal_Profil 23:46, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Good day. I wonder if you could be of assistance in moving John Thompson (politician) to John Sparrow David Thompson. From your comments on the talk page and history of moving it once, I see you have some familiarity with the man and see he preferred and is still now referred to by all four names. The only variation I have ever seen is in occasionally writing it as John S. D. Thompson but never simply John Thompson. It is Samuel Prichard Matheson, who has an article on wikipedia,but no photo. I have uploaded the right photo of Robert Machray from a book I have. Since you are the one who put the picture up, maybe you can tell me how to change the name of the jpeg and get it connected to the right article. Sam is/was a relative of mine, and so his face is pretty well known in the family. I have a copper plate etching of this photo on my office wall. Interestingly enough, his first cousins, John and Edward Matheson were also Anglican priests in the west, and his nephew was the Dean of Rupertsland during his time as Bishop.

Last Spike, Basque B.C.

Hi, the photo you posted as the driving of the last spike on the Canadian Northern Railway is in fact that of the last spike being driven on the Grand Trunk Pacific at Fraser Lake B.C. on April 7, 1914 by Edson Chamberlain. If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

• make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
• Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-enwikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-enwikimedia.org.

MSU Interview

Dear Fawcett5,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails the first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. Hi Fawcett - thanks so much for your article on Lily Litvak. I wondered if you could inform me as to gaining copyright permission to publish the image of Lily? It is rather urgent. I am hoping to produce a production of Peter Arnott's play White Rose in which Lily of course features and need to give an image to the theatre for their brochure (deadline today!) only just found this image hence the short notice. ITN

There seem to be major problems with the items you're adding to ITN. You've included no bold links so it's entirely unclear which article, if any, supports the items. In fact the second item "Nouri al-Maliki rebuffs calls from the Obama administration to step down as Prime Minister of Iraq", doesn't seem to be supported by any of the 3 articles, so I've no idea what it's doing on ITN. The news articles that were there were very stale indeed, obviously nobody has been minding the shop at ITN. The links and blurbs posted are entirely uncontroversial -- bolds to articles are now included. Fawcett5 (talk) 16:39, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

(Edit conflicts) I have reverted you. Use WP:ITNC like everyone else if you have an idea for a news item. Items are only added when there is a consensus not only that the story is worthy of posting but also that the bolded article has been sufficiently updated and is in decent shape. Procedures may have been different some years ago, of course, but please follow the modern way of doing things. And saying that nobody has been minding the shop at ITN is inaccurate and also insulting to those who work hard at ITNC (I'm not one of them) to ensure that the ITN section is a net positive to the main page. Moreover, there has been considerable recent discussion of ITN's systemic bias. Putting up two stories which both frame action in the Arabic-speaking world in terms of the actions of Americans, without appropriate discussion beforehand, is especially unhelpful in that light. Guys, whatever, please lay off. I saw something that to me was obviously BROKEN.. the marquee story in the so-called news section is now on day five since it was actually news. So I took it upon myself in good faith to help out and fix it. I've been around here a long time, and obviously the standards for consensus on ITN have changed somewhat since I was most active, it used to be considerably more relaxed. I'll leave ITN alone from now on, but sorry, to me your process sure looks paralyzed / broken. It's not news if takes days after the event for it to show up on the feed. Besides, in at least one of the stories I posted, it looks like there is adequate consensus to post, just nobody has done anything. and sheesh, sorry I initially forgot the bolds, I had that fixed within a couple of minutes, tops. Like you, I became a Wikipedia administrator in 2005, so I was around in the days when admins posted ITN items without prior consensus. As noted above, even then, an article update was required. ITN is not – and has never been – a news feed. I don't know what you intended to accomplish by posting information not covered in the relevant articles. (What was supposed to happen when readers followed the links?)

No one has questioned whether you acted in good faith, but competence is required. You're more than welcome to edit ITN, provided that you acquaint yourself with its purpose and procedures (including the fact that an item with "consensus to post" still requires a properly written/updated article).

You apparently were taken aback by the reactions that you received, which I suspect would have been milder if you'd taken the initial complaints seriously instead of dismissively claiming that your contested actions were "entirely uncontroversial". —David Levy 17:39, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

Given your recent demonstration, perhaps you should consider re-evaluating your ability as an admin here (fewer than 250 edits in 7 years?!), especially when it comes to over-ruling processes that have been in place and running smoothly for years. As David says, your dismissive tone doesn't help you at all, I suppose we'll need to carefully monitor your behaviour and edits in due course in case you stomp on other well-established parts of Wikipedia with your "personal approach".
