Correcting 2021 US Recession’s end Dates & Durations

You kept changing the end dates of COVID recession from Ongoing to April 2020, why? I find it unbelievable that the recession ended so quickly 69.244.83.111 (talk)

I mean, the short answer is that modern technical definitions of recession is defined by the NBER, so they get to decide when recessions begin and end. The longer answer is that recessions can be thought of as "periods of contraction of production" and expansions can be thought of as "periods of growth of production", so recessions begin when the growth of production goes negative, but end when that growth of production becomes positive, even from a very low base. So if you think we're still growing from a very low base of production because of the damage from Covid, you're correct, but growth of production from that low base is still considered an expansion, and that expansion began in April 2020.
