Lakes of Vologda Oblast

Thank you for interest in Vikipedia. It is amazing to see that novices now from their first edit know how to deal with categories. Unfortunately, I had to revert your edits like this one, since the category Category:Lakes of Vologda Oblast is already included into the category Category:Lakes of Russia, and therefore including the article in the parent category does not make sense.--Ymblanter (talk) 16:34, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

GOCE barnstar, January 2012 drive

The Modest Barnstar
This barnstar is awarded to Encycloshave for editing 4 articles with a total of 4740 words during the January 2012 GOCE drive. Thank you for participating! --Stfg (talk) 10:36, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

Copy-Edit request

Hi, I saw your name in the Guild of Copyeditors. I was wondering if you could take up a request to copy-edit Connor (Angel) thoroughly? I'm a member of GCE too, but since I've worked on the article too closely I feel it needs a check by fresh eyes. Waiting for your reply. Thanks September88 (talk) 11:06, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

I'll be glad to give it a copy-edit. Cheers! Encycloshave (talk) 13:39, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
Wow thanks. I eventually want to nominate it for GA, so if you have any suggestions for any major improvements too, feel free to give them at my talk page or the articles. September88 (talk) 16:12, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
Completed It's all set. I'd run it past another copy editor, one that has more experience with taking an article to featured article. One thought is that a few more pictures could be added. I'm not sure if they're available, but I think a picture or two of Connor and another cast character and perhaps production or set pictures would be some nice touches. Cheers! Encycloshave (talk) 19:31, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
Thankyou! I think you did a wonderful ce, doubt it needs another ce, I'll just run through it myself I guess. Will start slow from Good Article nomination before FA. Good suggestions about images! I'll see what pics I can add. Thanks again! September88 (talk) 16:48, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

Multi-edit vandalism

Thanks for watching-for and undoing vandalism! However, a few times I see you have undone one of an editor's several consecutive vandalistic edits. The result is that the other ones remain and become less likely to be fixed by others because your edit is the most recent and is tagged as vandalism-cleaning of that editor. You might want to apply for "rollback" rights, so you can one-click undo all of the preceding editor's changes to an article instead of just an undo of single edit at a time. DMacks (talk) 20:01, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip. That'll help especially in cases likeUser:206.248.241.154. I gave up, as I was watching multiple ones happening. Encycloshave (talk) 20:53, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

GOCE drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors January 2012 backlog elimination drive
GOCE January 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graph

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter.

Participation

45 people signed up for this drive this time; of these, 35 participated. This is similar to the number of editors who helped out in November. Thanks to all who participated! Barnstars will be distributed in the near future.

Progress report

Recent drives have been focusing on the oldest three months in the backlog. During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—July, August, and September 2010—from the queue, and there are less than 300 articles remaining from 2010. End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy editing at this time for other reasons. The {{GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators.

Thank you for participating in the January 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. Our next copy edit drive will be in March.

Request for a look at my attempt to wikify List of products by Dapol

Hey, there. I've been doing a little bit of wikifying of some articles and was wondering if you would have a look at List of products by Dapol and let me know if there's any more wikifying I could do to this article. I have no knowledge of the topic, so can't really add any content or even judge the existing content. Also, I have no interest in the topic, so I don't have much motivation to research a lot to add any more. I've done some extensive research already to find the accurate links I've added.

If you could have a look at the article and leave some advice on the talk page, it would be much appreciated. :) Matt (talk) 09:28, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive update

GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far.

Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This work has helped make the drive a more pleasant experience for all our volunteers.

Hi Encycloshave,

Thanks for your efforts reviewing the above article. My apologies that I haven't attended to it sooner, I've been busy off Wikipedia and not logging in.

Thanks for your kind comments about the article and attention to detail, particulary regarding the text, it should help improve the article. You've left us in a bit of a cliffhanger though by not calling where it stands overral in relation to the criteria--pass, fail, needs more work?

Best regards, --Ktlynch (talk) 01:08, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

(P.s. glad to see you're in the CE Guild also!)

GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graph

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter.

Participation

Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months.

Progress report

During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. We were able to complete 500 articles this month! End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy-editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy-editing at this time for other reasons. The {{GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators.

Thank you for participating in the March 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. Our next copy-edit drive will be in May.

Help needed: Jayne Mansfield

A mid-importance article supported by WikiProject Actors and Filmmakers that was reviewed by Version 1.0 Editorial Team and selected for Version 0.7 and subsequent release versions. The article has come a long way from a fan boy mish mash to a fair enough GA. Now is the time to take it to the next level. Currently it's going through another peer review. Serious help is needed to clean up the copy. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. Aditya(talkcontribs) 10:19, 23 April 2012 (UTC)

Wine and Champagne

Couple things: Can you bring me up to date on the dispute over at Wine? I have a feeling that you are in the right here but since I've been away there has been a lot of edits to the article so I want to make sure that I'm up to date before I weigh in.
Also, I see that you are a slight lean towards lower case on Champagne but I hope that I could sway you back with the summary of key points here. Basically, while yes, there are some inconsistency in capitalize vs lower case usage, there are A LOT of reliable sources that still use the capitalization (including this great article from the New York Times "Champagne With a Capital 'C'. I believe that this evidence of common usage with the capitalization (even the dictionaries they keep citing often note that the wine is sometime capitalized) coupled with the registered protected name AND the standard convention of treating wines named after their regions (are we suddenly going to lower case Barolo, Bordeaux and Rioja everywhere) makes a compelling enough argument to keep the status quo.
Plus, I fret about where Kauffner might take his campaign. He's already trying to take an article that is about the history of the region and wine industry and lowercase it just because it has "Champagne" in the title. There are countless wine articles/grape variety articles that might get caught up in this mess when there really isn't an overwhelmingly strong argument to shake things up--just a few dictionaries. I appreciate your time and consideration. AgneCheese/Wine 00:23, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

Mainly the case is whether Wine should make any mention of fruit wines at all. The argument is that Encyclopedia Britannica reads that wine comes from grapes, period. Hence, half of the lede was deleted. Yet, the cited Britannica article does give a paragraph or two to fruit wines. I reverted the deletion, and User:Wran has been reverting my reversion while adding combative statements in the edit summary. After finally appearing on the talk page and getting hostile with an administrator, Wran was blocked for a week.
As for Champagne, I have a slightly cynical view of it, as you'll read on the talk page. I agree that it should be upper case, and I believe trademark points to that. But I don't believe it's worth trying to make the case by citing numbers of articles from "reliable sources." If we could do some data mining on LexisNexis, run some numbers, and definitively say which is used more, everybody would still argue over what qualifies as a reliable source. No, no. What would be more productive is to propose additions to Wikipedia guidelines to include this sort of thing. It would include more examples such as Serrano ham, Balsamic vinegar, etc. Additionally, things like Worcestershire sauce might be a good example. Although, regardless of where it is made, Worcestershire is always upper case. Cheers Encycloshave (talk) 18:56, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
I have to say that I've been exceedingly impressed with the calm, level-head approach you've taken to both discussions. Even when I don't 100% agree with you, it is easy to respect your opinions and they are always well worth considering. Regardless of which way either discussion goes, I want to thank you for taking the time to participate and to bringing in some much welcome doses of rationality.
With the Wine article, I believe in the US (and I would think in the EU) the technical legal definition of "wine" (without qualifier) is the product of fermented grapes with other fermented beverages needing to have some qualifier or description in front of the term wine(i.e. Fruit wine, Barley wine, etc). If we can find the reliable sources to that effect, I don't see why a compromise can't be crafted with the lead that allows for fruit wine to mention but noting that, for the most part, the term "wine" is usually meant to refer to the stuff made by grapes. Probably find a way to link to the Non-grape-based wine article there as well. It seems like that could satisfy Wran's main objection, though with his editing history I wouldn't be 100% certain.
With Champagne, again you make some excellent points. It would be nice to have some solid reliable numbers but I really don't know how possible that it with the way that people (especially blogs and social media comments that get picked up on ngrams and the like) use "champagne" as a catch-all term for all bubbles. I just ultimately don't see a compelling enough reason based on a few dictionaries to change the status quo when the capitalization use is, indeed, common (even if we can't quantify it to know if it is the majority per se).
PS the "silliness" you remove from your comment had me LOLing but I get why you removed it :P AgneCheese/Wine 22:29, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the vote of confidence. The contrast is interesting. Everybody in the Champagne discussion has been civil. But, it's unfortunate the Wine discussion has not been as productive, though not surprising when reviewing Wran's talk page. Encycloshave (talk) 17:39, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

GOCE September 2012 drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Out of 41 people who signed up this drive, 28 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing July, August, September and October 2011 from the backlog. This means that, for the first time since the drives began, the backlog is less than a year. At least 677 tagged articles were copy edited, although 365 new ones were added during the month. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2341 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 54 requests outstanding before September 2012 as well as eight of those made in September.

Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the August 2012 competition, and prizes will be issued soon. The September 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The October 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

– Your drive coordinators: Stfg, Allens, and Torchiest.

GOCE November 2012 copy edit drive update

Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter

  • Participation: Out of 31 people signed up for this drive so far, 22 have copy-edited at least one article. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!
  • Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive. We have reduced our target group of articles—November and December 2011—by over 50%, and 34 of the the 56 requests made in September and October this year have already been fulfilled. However, the rate of tagging for copy edit has increased, and this month we are just keeping the size of the backlog stable. So, all you copy editors, please do come along and help us!
  • The September 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest was won by Baffle gab1978 for his copy edit of Expulsion of the Acadians. Runner up was Gareth Griffith-Jones for his edit of I Could Fall in Love. Congratulations to both.
  • The October 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the discussion and voting stage until midnight November 30 (UTC). You don't have to make a submission to vote!
  • November 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the submissions stage until midnight November 30 (UTC), when discussion and voting begin.
  • Seasonal oversight: We had a slight fall from grace in the title of our last newletter, which mentioned the season in the northern hemisphere and thus got it wrong for the southern. Fortunately an observant GOCE member was ready to spring into action to advise us. Thanks! In future we'll stay meteorologically neutral.
