Hello,

I'm Ed Greenwood, the creator of Forgotten Realms (r)and the author of thousands of books, games, articles, essays, comics, etc...

I would like to improve my page on Wikipedia; especially the bibliography section but am a little overwhelmed by the process.

I wonder if it might be possible to find a Wiki-volunteer (or a few) I can work with over the next few months to help me update the bibliography with full information for each of the listed books and to add information on things I have written that do not appear in the list.

I would also like to improve the other sections of my Wikipedia page.

Welcome to Wikipedia, Mr Wood. People are strongly discouraged from editing their own articles directly; what you should do is, explain on the article talk page, Talk:Ed Greenwood, any inaccuracies in the article, and any suggested changes. You will need to give sources for the information, because of the Wikipedia:Verifiability policy that "any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be attributed to a reliable, published source." If there is no response after a few days, you could add {{helpme}} to attract attention.

While JohnCD was writing that message, I was busy writing a much longer reply to your request for help. I am slightly editing it to allow for JohnCD's reply, but here it is.

First of all, I do sympathise with your feeling of being "overwhelmed by the process". Wikipedia can be a very confusing and daunting environment for anyone new to editing it, as I know from my own experience. However, it does get much easier once you are used to it.

Next, you should be aware of Wikipedia's conflict of interest guideline, which discourages us from writing about subjects with which we have a close connection, such as editing articles about ourselves. While I have no doubt that your intentions are good, it can be very difficult to satnd back from writing about oneself and see how it will look to an impartial observer. Many people who I am sure believe they are editing neutrally about themsleves or their work have instead produced text which to outsiders looks very much like an attempt at self-promotion, which is against Wikipedia policy. You should be particularly aware of htis risk, since in the past an editor suggested that the article contained self-promotion, and even if that suggestion was unjustified, the fact that it has been made may lead to less benefit of the doubt being given. If you wish to make corrections to uncontroversial factual details, such as correctign your date of birth or something of the sort, there should not be much problem. However, if you are considering anything which might possibly be seen as open to question, I strongly advise you to think carefully about whether to pursue the matter or not. If you do decide to pursue it, then it is best to ask for help from other, independent editors, as you have done, rather than just make changes yourself. If and when you have a specific edit that you want to suggest, rather than posting it directly to the article, you can put {{edit request}}, followed by a statement of what change you would like made, on the talk apge of the article, i.e. Talk:Ed Greenwood. This will show up as a notice looking like this:

It is requested that an edit be made to this article that the user below does not want to make because of a conflict of interest.
Please review the request below and make the edit if the edit is well cited, neutral, and follows other Wikipedia guidelines and policies.

Please consider reading the guide for how to review and submit request edits, including decline and accept templates.

However, unlike the copy I have pasted here, it will also add the page to a list of pages where edit requests have been made, and it is then to be hoped that someone will respond to the request.

Although I am posting advice to you here, I am not actually providing the sort of editing help that you have asked for. However, what you are asking does not require an administrator, as any experienced editor may be able to help, so I suggest that if you decide to make another request for help, rather than the {{adminhelp}} template, use the more general {{helpme}} template. John, James, my thanks to you both for the quick reply.

Let me assure you that I do understand what Wikipedia is and have no intention or desire to rework my own pages so they are self-promoting. What I would like to do is correct factual inaccuracies and fill in missing information only.

To that end I would like to restate and have you confirm I understand what to do next; if you'd be so kind.

First, if I see something in the page(s) about myself that is factually incorrect do I need a published source to cite if I am the original source of the information? I am assuming not and I should simply put in an editing request citing myself as the source of the accurate fact and wait for someone to feel the change is appropriate and make the update themselves. Yes?

Second, a few of my books listed in the bibliography have secondary pages with covers, plot descriptions, publication information, etc... For the ones that do not I would use the HelpMe code in a post with all the missing factual information and wait for someone to feel it appropriate to add the information for me? Yes?

I have no desire to subvert the goals of Wikipedia, only to add to the factual content available about myself and my works.

Help with my bibliography...[edit]

Hello Wikipedia,

I am Ed Greenwood, author and creator of Forgotten Realms (r). First I would like to thank the Community for creating a page on me and let you all know how much I appreciate being a part of this incredible encyclopedia project.

Understanding how Wikipedia works and not wanting to give even a suggestion of impropriety, I'd like to ask for help with filling in the rest of my bibliography. I'm not looking to add anything that might be considered opinion; just facts. Some of my books have a secondary page that contains a plot description, cover art and publication information; some books do not.

If anyone would like to help me update my bibliography with the missing book jackets, plot descriptions and publication information please do be in touch.

I look forward to working with the Wiki Community and to seeing a complete (facts only) bibliographic record of my works up on your pages. I thank you in advance for your help.
