Tanager and other photos[edit]

Thanks for uploading the numerous nice photos! I have removed the two photos you had placed under the Ruby-crowned Tanager, as they both show a female Silver-beaked Tanager. Likewise, I removed the photo you had placed under the Southern Masked Weaver as it was a male Village Weaver, the photo placed under the Ruddy Ground-dove as it was a female Blue Ground-dove, the photo placed under Whitehead's Broadbill was a male Green Broadbill, and the two photos placed under Javan Trogon were Sumatran Trogons. While visiting your excellent gallery, I did find a few other issues: [1] and [2] both show a Pacific Hornero, [3] is a Blue-grey Tanager, [4] and [5] are a female and juvenile Violaceous Euphonia, [6], [7] and [8] all show a male Violaceous Euphonia, [9] and [10] are Black Kites, [11] is a Kikuyu White-eye, and [12] is a White-tailed Eagle. Among the mystery birds: [13] is a female Spangled Cotinga, [14] is a Rusty Laughingthrush of the mainland population now commonly called the Buffy Laughingthrush, [15] is a Sooty-headed Bulbul, and [16] is a Blue-grey Tanager. Thanks for the heads up on the new photos in your gallery. A single comment about this and this photo. They're female Silver-beaked Tanagers. The female Ruby-crowned is much duller and browner, and with a more 'normal' bill without the enlarged lower mandible typical of Ramphocelus tanagers (you can compare the photo of the female in the current wiki article, Ruby-crowned Tanager). Galleries[edit]

Hi Doug, recently I've noticed that you've uploaded some excellent bird shots into 'Galleries' on numerous bird-articles, Currently there seems to be a movement to 'eradicate' these 'Galleries' from WP articles....something that I'm not really in favour of. See [17], basically most admins would like them all moved but I'm arguing that they can be useful if they display variations in plumages of races, sexes or maturity of bird-species. They also want to see a change in the title from 'Gallery' to a more descriptive one though I'm not sure that 'Various views and plumages' is very inspiring either. Hi Aviceda, as a birder you know that plumage for the same species has several influencing factors and varies considerably. Photos of birds from varying locations and genders, taken at different ages, seasons and angles can help to identify a particular species, without Wiki becoming essentially a generic host for online galleries. This is a good topic of conversation, perhaps on the discussion page of WikiProject Birds, unless there is a more suitable location? - Dougjj (talk) 00:29, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Doug, it has come up on WP:Birds before [18] and there has been discussion regarding it on Wikipedia generally (see my previous link) basically Galleries will be 'tolerated' if they include useful information or media but will be removed or a 'gallery-cleanup' stub added if they are just used as an 'image-repository'. Doug, personally I believe if you have a reasonable image it should be allowed to stay but that it's unnecessary duplication that needs to be addressed, on the Indian Cormorant article there are 10+ images of birds feeding....surely one is enough? Aviceda talk 18:12, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Aviceda, that gallery has been flagged for excessive gallery photos, it seems to have grown with 1 more feeding photo yesterday. Other than flagging it, is there a process for notifying the contributor or editing it by an admin or project member? - Dougjj (talk) 00:41, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
