Unable to initiate communication with OAuth provider: MDWiki

Hi, I visited MDWiki's login page and clicked the button Login with Wikipedia account but got an error message banner showing Unable to initiate communication with OAuth provider. Do you know how to troubleshoot this issue? Thank you! --Molecular atrophy (talk) 13:43, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

User:Tryptofish Yes Oauth is not working well. You can just log in with the user name and password you set for the site though. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 02:11, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
If I remember correctly, I didn't do it that way from the beginning, because I didn't want to use my email to set it up, for privacy reasons. So I never created a password specifically for that site. User:Sj yes that is the idea. OurWorldinData is happy to work with us. We have been collaborating informally for a couple of years.
We have the ability to store their data in an editable format on Commons. We can than pull the data into this graphing tool built by User:Yurik.
Improving our tools in this area was in the top 10 for the community wish list this year.[2] So hopefully we will see some progress.
The technical folks at OurWorldinData are willing from what I understand to give our folks a hand with bits of technical stuff if needed.
More community members pushing for improvements here would still be a good thing though...

User:Sj main issue facing integration of tabular data between commons and WD is one of copyright. Commons accepts any open license while WD only accepts CC 0. Most of these data sets are CC BY... Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 01:55, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
Metadata about these tabular datasets is CC-0. First we should add WD fields for tabular datasets (a link to a csv, an entity-schema matching that csv). The linked files can be anywhere we like. There's no particular reason we couldn't store tabular datasets in their own place on WD the way we store them now on Commons -- they would be easily distinguished in dumps. – SJ + 21:42, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

Currently, WD licensing policy is that "All structured data from the main, Property, Lexeme, and EntitySchema namespaces is available under CC-0, and text in other namespaces is CC-SA". So we would nee to keep .tab files somewhere other than those namespaces. But that's not much different from how they are stored on Commons. At any rate, the canonical place to find such datasets should be (a) a WD entity for the dataset, with individual tabular dataset properties for "Annual data" (2020, 2019, 2018, &c), and (b) the source-url property for each year's dataset should be the URL to a .tab file. Whether that file is stored on Commons or on Wikidata is secondary [I think it's far clearer to store it on WD / with the full-project WD dumps / &c, however] Yes, editing with VE or equivalent would be great. Heads up about some unprotections

Hi there Doc James. As the headline says, I wanted to drop by to give a heads up that I've unprotected Multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease, both of which you'd (very reasonably) put under semi-protection in 2012. My hope is that now that many years have passed, these will no longer be a target for vandalism. I'll keep an eye on both, so if my hopes are misplaced, we can re-protect any time. I've also invited folks at WT:MED to consider our currently protected medicine-related pages, so there may be more to follow. Bealle's list and Questionable journals list

Hey Doc,

I am having a bit of difficulty with high impact journals that turn out to be predatory or hijacked. Specifically high end publications with heavy conflicts of interest/outside funding issues -- trying to avoid the MDPI, Hindawi, Frontiers type issues that keep sneaking back into articles.

Are our questionable journal lists and Bealle's the best we have at ferreting these issues out? I'm posting this question on Headbomb and Zefr's talk pages as well.

Please let me know how this proceeds. I have been corresponding with them and using my outdated academic connections to try and finagle a login but not much luck. Hey James just to follow up -- I contacted Cabell's about purchasing their service and have been exchanging a number of e-mails back and forth but have met some difficulty. They have multiple different sets including a "Health & Nursing Set", a "Math & Science Set" and a "Medicine Set" that is coming this fall. Each individually is about $1500 based on my FTE. Did you purchase any of these sets or do you have experience with the service? My main interests here are things like neurology, biochem, immunology, microbiology, nutrition, genetics, longevity, surgery, trauma, internal medicine, critical care, oncology, cardiology and radiology -- having difficulty working out with the rep which of the sets would cover these topics most comprehensively. If you have subscribed or know which of their sets these categories would fall into please let me know. Also, did they quote you the same price? Videowiki Issues

Hi, I was not sure who to ask, but I can't seem to be able to convert my script at Wikipedia:VideoWiki/Asus ZenFone 6 using VideoWiki as I keep encountering the error "Our servers are working hard converting other articles and are eager to spend some time with you! At first I suspected he might not be notable, but searching around I see he is inventor of the "Marik protocol" which seems to be (have been?) a hot topic in ICU circles. Single population

Hi Doc James. I haven't 'bothered' you for quite some time. Hope you are well. On the page HFE H63D gene mutation, the text "A study in 2020 predicted that the H63D variant may be a risk factor for incidental amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in a Han Chinese population" seems to imply that the risk affects only Han Chinese; whereas I suspect that what is meant is that the research subjects were Han Chinese. So I checked the source, which says nothing about Chinese; insted it says "in a single population". From Google — results including many entries relating to reliable journals — I see that "single population" must have a specific [technical] meaning in biology/ medicine. Hello Doc James and Rui Gabriel Correia. Regarding 'single population', I think this paper was just trying to be modest about the scope of their results. In fact, the patients were those who happened to show up with the given disease at a particular hospital in China and agreed to enrol in the study. The authors did not seem to be trying to generalize their results broadly. The text of the paper states that all of their subjects were of Han Chinese ethnicity. To avoid any misunderstanding of the particular sentence, how about just omitting the phrase "in a Han Chinese population" and keeping the rest. EdJohnston (talk) 21:28, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

I know a little about Cochran but don't have the depth of knowledge you do. The issue is whether it is plausible that text available now has been embargoed until next year. Fetal Viability

Hey, sorry to bother, but I needed some help with this article. I was going to add some information myself, since the lead is barren (only a single sentence) and the body includes highly misleading data that is very outdated, since the survival rates by preterm week increased significantly over the past few decades. Could you add a few sentences to the lead and update the body to more accurately reflect current information? I would do it myself, but since I am not a medical professional, I do not want to write something misleading. Pudendal nerve entrapment

So many problems in this article: Pudendal nerve entrapment. The whole concept is an iffy theory supported by a small cabal of doctors, probably because it is lucrative for them. The sources are mostly case histories and primary studies. Now suddenly the page is being heavily edited by a tag team in a promotional drive. I was hoping you might have some more information about this image. I don't think that our current description is enough. My most obvious question is what is the approximate BMI of the person on the right? (Or better yet, height and weight.) I just find it hard to judge as a lay person whether or not that's a "shocking" level of obesity or not just from a scan, lol. I'd say probably not? 36mm just doesn't seem like much. I realize you made this image in 2008, but if you know anything else about it, I'm hoping you can add it to the notes. Book: preservation

Hello Doc James :) Winter greetings to you. I notice that the only 15 books preserved under Wikipedia:Books/archive, like Cancer care, are mainly medical. Did you request this specially? Were they preserved from deletion, or deleted + then undeleted?

Many of the other deleted books have 5 or 10k of content and dozens of edits, and should clearly be undeleted; the Q is where ... I'd prefer to see them restored in place, in the context of the project and the other undeleted books. Has the process been talked through in detail somewhere? – SJ + 01:21, 24 December 2021 (UTC)

User:Sj the book pages in question were the intro pages to the offline medical apps we used to make from Wikipedia. Due to requests from certain members of the community we have moved our offline and translation efforts to be based off of MDWiki.
We are still working on getting coordination of the new intro pages meshed with our versions for the offline apps in other languages. But progress is coming along. In other words no issues with these pages becoming historical here.
P.S. if someone could help us get Wikidata working within MDWiki that would be appreciated. Otherwise I am sure we can eventually figure out a work around.
