I am not sure if I am the right person for the LGBT studies project, as I am straight and not gay. However, I am historically interested in the closeted lives of several gay or bisexual Hollywood stars. Onefortyone 22:35, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the invitation. Perhaps it may be a good idea to join your project. I am frequently getting into trouble with some other users for calling some Hollywood stars bisexual or gay. Though my contributions are supported by many independent sources, these fans still think the stars were straight and endeavor to remove edits that say otherwise. Washington Blade

Dev -- the process has kinda stalled out. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but no one who hasn't been connected with the page already has reviewed it for the GA nomination...it's now the top story on the category it falls under on the GA Candidates page so maybe someone will give it some attention soon... To be honest, I am going to move on to my next article. This time I'm thinking Bay Area Reporter or Gay City News or HX Magazine. I want to one by one take a stub and get it to GA status. Trouble with an article

WBE

The file is the latest version of "stub-meta-history.xml.gz" latest version is at http://download.wikimedia.org/enwiki/20070206/ . This is 3.6 Gb so will take some time to download. The simplest thing to do, if you have disk space, is to expand the file using winzip or similar (gzip for linux).

You will need a version of perl installed, if using windows Active PErl is quite good, or the mainstream perl from (I think) www.cpan.org.

Then put this code in a text file called em.. "wbe.pl"

This will produce a set of results with the biggest contribs at the top. Take the first however-many-you-want lines and paste them to a wiki page. Bots and admins will not be marked on this version. The version that does mark them (when flagged) is on my dead machine, but may be back "RSN".

Question about FAC's

Hi Dev. Good luck with Trembling. :-) Listen, as your knowledge of policies (and pretty much everything else here) is vastly greater than mine, could you clarify something for me? It's about where the difference lies between canvassing/rallying and informing other editors. For example, I saw you posted the Trembling FAC at the wikiproject page. Is that valid? I'm going through FAC too at the Spanish wiki, and I hadn't thought of mentioning it on the project page. I believed it might get me into trouble (especially if the other 6 members suddenly appear and vote support en masse). I've seen people here don't react that well when they see members of a project have been 'warned' of a vote and start voting in groups. You presume correctly! :-D The voting policy there is a study in maths: I need 23 supports, or at least a +11 difference. If I get at least 11 supports without reaching 23 I'll be eligible for a second round where I'll need another determined number of votes to make it a FA. Madness, I tell you. :-) You'll be happy to know that Latter Days is almost ready for FAC too (we just need a few cleanup touches and an image, since es:Wiki doesn't allow FU). I even believe it has more info than the English article now, haha. ;-)

I hope the situation does de-escalate at WP:AWARDS. Honestly, monitoring that page is starting to resemble watching a soap opera! ;-) I do not wish to add to the tension, but I do not believe such comments should go unchallenged either. Not fired

Dev, can I ask you to reword that talkpage post? Being asked to resign is not the same thing as being fired. WjBscribe 18:59, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Jimbo has used the phrase "asked to resign" everywhere else. 'Fired' has a specific meaning and I don't think Jimbo had any legal basis to dismiss Essjay. He uses the term in that email to make it sound stronger but I cannot see how it accurately describes the situation. WP:BLP applies to talkpage and I think sticking to "asked to resign" is safer. The two are not the same thing. If you fire someone you terminate their employment contract. If you asked someone to resign you invite them to terminate the contract. Those are legally different actions with different consequences. Conflating the two is a mistake. And I wish you hadn't used it in an edit summary after I had raised the concerns I did here.

For what could Jimbo have fired Essjay? He knew of his real identity when he gave him paid employment. All of Essjay's action on Wikipedia were available for Jimbo to check. He kept a copy of "the letter" in his userspace. In what way can Essjay therefore be said to have breached his employment contract? WjBscribe 19:30, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Spell checker

Alternatively, instead of using Word, you could use Firefox 2 (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/). It has a built in spell checker making showing misspelled words unlined in red in textboxes. Right clicking shows possible spellings and an option to add to the dictionary. And if you're not using tabbed browsing already, it makes browsing the internet and editing Wikipedia niiice. :) -- Ash Lux ^{(talk | contribs)} 19:26, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Portal automation

I've sorted the automation of the quotes section based on how other portals work. It now alternates through a series of 10 quotes, and I've created a page where people can suggest new quotes that can replace those in the list. Should be fairly self-explanatory...

Portal related issues

OK, I have a few proposals and questions about the portal I want to go over with you before forging ahead with my changes. Most are based on looking at other portals and seeing what works best elswhere:

1. Change the selected article/biography so they should be updated each month rather than each week
2. Have a page where people can suggest the next selected article/biography and project members can vote on the choices if there are several- this seems a good way to get our expanding membership involved in the process....
3. Re:Portal talk: LGBT. I want to move the names presently on the portal maintance rota to the Backup column. I think we should encourage newer members of the project to step up in this area. Given all of us are busy elsewhere a more back seat role would be appropriate.
4. I plan to place a request on the project noticeboard for suggested pictures to use (I've made a start at User:WJBscribe/Drafts). Seems best just to have a selection to cycle through for the pics rather than the process I suggested for articles and biographies above.

Wanted to check you thought the above is the right way to go. I'll work on the archives for picture, article and bio sections as the next step in bringing the portal up to scratch. WjBscribe 20:00, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, if there are no suggestions it seems fair enough to just select one. One month seems to be standard time on most portals. But I guess we can do fortnightly if you prefer. That is a generous offer! For the Rite of Spring - all that's really required is the bassoon solo of the first few - only about 4/5 - bars, but if the person recording wants to go with the bassoon line for that's fine by me.

Question about images

Hi Dev

Long time no see... anyways, I had a question about images. There's this image on the hungarian wikipedia http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/hu/6/67/10146801.pict.jpg that I wanna use on the english language version of the same page, but the regular method of specifying Image:name doesn't work - it merely shows a link to the image, not the image itself. Do you know if it is permitted to use the same images across different languages and if it is, how is it done?

Missing LGBT articles

So far I am slowly going through all the individuals mentioned on the first list and adding the banner to them if the existing content of the article indicates their LGBT status or if it is explicitly mentioned on the first list you mentioned. A few articles do not have such explicit references in either the list or the extant article, and I will be sending you a list of them later. I hesitate to place the banner on them because many are still living and might in some way object, particularly those who are mentioned because of HIV-positive status, as is true in at least one case. When I finish going through the first list, I will go on to the later lists. So far, however, I have found no names on the list which are specifically also included in any of the missing encyclopedic articles lists, although the first list deals primarily with living people, so that probably isn't a surprise. English Reformation

I have just returned from a meeting. The above was jsut a holding remark. One of the bugbears of WP is that after some period of collaborative work aomone new arrives, does not read the talk page and then makes alterations. In the initial para. the reference to High church Anglicans is anachronistic and unspecific or bluntly, wrong. The problems were other than you imply. The deletion of the civil war whose seeds were already in the earth from Elizabeth is a mistake. This was not copy editing at all. You may, for all I know be a professor of mediaeval history, but I judge not. If not then it is most helpful if editors arriving do not make minor stylistic edits which distort the original text. We all have our stylistic preferences, but there was nothing wrong with the initial remarks compared with the wider questions about what to include in way of causes of the Reformation about which there is material on the talk page. If you reverted all your edits what would be lost in the way of accuracy -a matter with which copy editing is not concerned?

Forgive me but it it important to recognise that WP articles are not fields belonging to no one but to be ploughed at will. It represented It would be helpful if you were to offer some thoughts about what could be done to introduce matters relating to causes, though as you may know the matter is hugely complex and controversial and some of us are finding it hard ot agree on what should be included. You will notice that I din't reevert the above. I am not sure about 'because you personally don't like it'. You yourself said that the High church refernce was a bit off. I think we are in danger of getting into what I call 'Wikitalk - ie the temperature rises and the tone sharpens. I may have started this, but the reason why I personally (I cannot act impersonally) didn't like what you wrote was that it telescoped history, omitted important information and used anachronistic language. I thought it cleaner to replace the lot. It may be that when you see a field it has thistles in it; it might be worthwhile asking around (talk page) to see if anyone put them there deliberately. Hi Dev, do you remember quite a few months ago, when you were working on Jake Gyllenhaal, I cropped the photo? Well, someone has messaged me about the email that somebody has regarding permission to use the image. I don't have anything like that but I thought you might have it. Anderson Cooper

I noticed your comment on the Anderson Cooper talk page where you said "I don't fully know what's been happening here". You can read more in the archived comments, especially starting at the section "WP:BLP complaint" (and continuing until the end). Basically it boils down to this:

• AC, when interviewed refuses to answer questions about his sexual orientation.
• Various publications such as the Washington Blade have printed statements to the effect of 'AC is gay'.
• Putting those two things together in the AC article upset people.
• It was claimed, among many other things, that "There is no evidence the Washington Blade is a significant, non-trivial, reliable source."

Hi there. :-) Congrats on getting Trembling to FA status! I'm a bit late getting the news. I'm barely around nowadays it would seem, I'm fully engaged at es:Wiki. You wouldn't believe how many important articles don't exist there, or are merely stubs. It's quite the challenge hehe. But the project there is going really well now, I've got a handful of very dedicated editors improving articles left and right. And we have our first FA now. :-) And hopefully, a GA soon. Not bad. Anyway, just wanted to keep you posted (and brag a bit about how well everything is going, what the hell!), and congratulate you again for Trembling. Ok, I've added images. These pages were really much more difficult than the first one, there is a serious lack of photos for many of the articles. I tried to get a broad range of people as well. There were some issues with the layout for some of the smaller letter sections. I hope it looks ok...I don't like it on my home computer, but they look fine on my computer at work. About your query, so far I haven't had any problems at all at es:wiki. In fact, I get the sense that most admins there are quite supportive of gay issues (you know, quick to revert anti-gay propaganda -of which there's a lot- and argue anti-gay comments at talk pages). And our FA sailed through without a prob (24-0) [10] . I also got a lot of help when I was first building up the project, and some editors even warn me when discussions about deleting LGBT articles are taking place. I'm sure sooner or later we'll hit some snags, but I'm not getting homophobic vibes so far from registered editors, and I'm certainly not being prevented of making contributions. If there are problems in other Wikipedias we may need to check it out. As you said, it would be our responsability. It is a serious accusation. Unfortunately I don't speak german (only french and a smattering of italian), so I can't check it out either. But there must be someone here that speaks german and can do that. The idea of a MetaProject sounds good, although we would need editors that spoke several languages just to understand each other. :-) The wikis that have homophobic editors would certainly find it helpful. Can you elaborate what you mean by "those stupid cite templates, which are really difficult to change, and they mess up the uniform look of the references"?

From my experience, it's much easier to change "|last=Smith" to "|last=Smythe" than it is to change a fully written cite. And the templates were created specifically to make refs uniform, so I don't understand that. Thoughts? -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 17:02, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

? By my count, your way has ~40 fewer characters - and seven of those are unnecessary spaces I use to make it more readable. Both ways interrupt the flow of the text, but only in the editing box. But my way means I don't have to know anything about the "proper" way a citation should be done. I use them mostly because the "proper" way is confusing to me. I'd rather have the template format it - I'll just provide the data. And why do you spend time manually changing them? Hi! Thanks for messaging me about Polish wiki and being interested:) Unfortunately there isn't an LGBT project on the Polish Wikipedia, and it doesnt seem there is going to be one in the nearest future. There are only several active authors in the field (not organised), and most of them busy in their "real" lives, therefore not being able to put enough energy in Wiki. There is no strong lobby that would protect the interests of LBT people in the Polish wikipedia.

As you probably imagine, since Wikipedia is edited by the general public, in Polish wiki the homophobic approach is not uncommon. Although it is very rarely expressed explicitly. Articles and categories can for example be marked as "for deletion" without noticing the author and then erased. Although it does not happen to articles that are heavily documented or have their foreign versions. For example my translations of pl:Polari and pl:Joe Orton were never violated.

As I observe there are three mayor difficulties surrounding the gay-related articles:

1. Polish Wikipedia is very rich in articles on 'political' topics connected with homosexualism: like LGBT ngos, gay-marriages in various countries, theories on why people are gay, and articles like 'homosexuality and religion' etc. (which usually have good quality and are objective, however have to be protected from editing due to frequent edit-wars) - But very poor in articles covering gay and lesbian culture, queer studies, or important LGBT people. This, in my opinion, reflects the current situation of the public debate in Poland, where homosexualism is still symbolical (as a matter of ideological and philosophical debate), not as something 'real', 'here and now', connected with real living people. I try to translate some articles from English Wiki, but as I dont really have a lot time, it goes very slow:) I'm still very proud of my Polari and Joe Orton though ehehehe:> Currently working on camp.

2. It is difficult to systematise LGBT related topic. To organise them in a way, so that users can actually find them. Very often LGBT categories get marked as "for deletion" and in the end get erased by the public vote. An example: I observed this happening to a category "Filmy LGBT" ("LGBT Films"). Most voters said that there isn't enough movies like that (sic!) to create a category, or that such category is not needed, or that it's unclear which film is LGBT and which isn't. After the category was erased, a huge effort was put to translate articles about all known to us LGBT Films (so that it would be clear there are a lot of them). And then, they all were put to a new category "Filmy z motywami LGBT" ("Films with LGBT motifs"). And at this very moment there is a voting for deletion. 3. It is very difficult to add information on sexuality of famous people. Especially Polish famous people. Like artists, politicians, kings/queens and poets. Same for adding them to LGBT People category. Seems too much hastle to argue each time.

Question on English language styles

Hi Dev920. I have a dilemma question on English language styles. I am a native British English speaker, but have lived and worked in the USA, my partner is American and I flip between the two countries quite regulary. Normally when I write an article(or anything else) I use the language stlye that the subject would have used or the style that my audience requires.

I am currently working on an article Lili Elbe, who was Danish, lived in France, died in Germany and I doubt if she even spoke English! The question is is it better to write the article using American or British English? e.g. Specialized/Specialised ?

Swedish Wikipedia and homophobia

Hi there,

Sorry it has taken me a while to get back to you about this. If truth be told I don't follow the Swedish wikipedia a great deal except for when whatever I am looking for happens to be related to the country in some way and a native viewpoint is useful. I have, however, had a look through at some of the controversial (on the English wikipedia anyway) articles such as the homosexuality page itself, same sex marriage and homophobia and have found very little in the way of vandalism or edit warring. I think the Swedes really live up to their reputation on this one of being exceptionally progressive. What is an enormously divisive issue for us isn't as much of a problem for them. Maybe I should spend more time there :)

From James Nightshade--Wikimania?

Dev--things have been going okay. I have working on my usual types of things, stuff in literature and theory (Susanne Langer, Carlos Castaneda, Umberto Eco, F. Scott Fitzgerald). Speaking of that, the F. Scott Fitzgerald page is surprisingly sloppy, given the topic. I cleaned it up some. Occasionally I'll make a change without logging in, such as my additions to "money."

Wikimania in Taipei? What is that? I'll have to look it up. Sounds like fun. I am always looking for something to do beside go to classes, teach classes, and read 100 pages a day or more.

I have the information now. I see it is being held at the Chien Tan Overseas Youth Activity Center. I taught a Debate class their a couple of years ago in fact. It's a nice education center in Taipei, near the old Grand Hotel. I wonder how much of the program will be in English, and how much in Chinese. I'm getting better, but still struggle a lot with Chinese. It's a devilishly difficult language.

I was feeling guilty that my note over at Wikipedia talk:Featured article candidates might seem unfriendly, so I thought I'd send you a more personal note. :) I really appreciate you conjuring up reviewers for the FAC, and I totally agree that the article should be as good as it can be, no matter how long it takes. I've tried my best, but I'm always willing concede that it could be done better or differently. I just think that we should try to hold onto a nice image of the Britannica within ourselves, don't you agree? It's so easy, especially for the average Wikipedian (you know), to slip into that hypercompetitive mode and get unnecessarily negative; and the next thing you know, Robert McHenry and Jimmy Wales are grappling in a pay-per-view smack-down. ;) Not a pretty sight, and not the way to make the world a finer place.

You seem really cool, and I'm impressed by all your work at WP:LGBT. Being a Coordinator is hard work; I was almost elected Coordinatrix at WP:MCB, but I successfully dodged it. ;) I also appreciate your advertising the latest collaboration; although it would probably save you some vandal-grief to be more discreet, it's good to be open and unafraid. What David does as a user is not relevant as we are talking about a main space bio subject to BLP. This is not his user talk page it is a page on wikipedia and there is no evidence that he is gay on that page. if you can source that he is gay that would be fine but till then we casnnot make that assumption based on what he does as a wikipedia user (one I am familair with). Squeakbox, what are you on here? I can't go on personal experience of me being gay to confirm where it says in my biography that I am? Utterly bizarre. But Dev920, please don't accuse me of constantly changing my account name. I took a decision last summer that I wanted privacy and a separation between my real life identity and my wikipedia name. As I was also going through the ArbCom trouble I also wanted a separate account which would remain unblocked just in case I needed to correct errors of fact in my biography. This was accepted at the time as legitimate. Once I had reached a settlement in the ArbCom case I then arranged to change my usual editing name once, and once only.

This has not been entirely successful as people continue to break privacy policy and connect my real life identity to my username, which is why my contributions are limited. I am trying to resist this connection being made. The reason this talk page was started again was that it was deleted by an admin because an IP editor had persisted in adding a link. The previous deleted page included some of my comments on sources which might be used in the article. I would ask you to acknowledge that I have not broken WP:COI (which did not exist then) on the page. DavidBoothroyd 00:08, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

Err, I was asking for a source. When I have the time I will go through everyone living on the gay cats checking for sourcing as this is wikipedia BLP policy. I am pro-gay but aware of the dangers of being outed. You cant without solid reliable sources claim someone is gay. What if they hadnt told their parents/family? and wikipedia outed them? That would go beyond the purposes and aims of wikipedia. Being outed must be a terrible experience and there is NO justificcation for labelling someone as gay without sourcing. How can we possibly be "claiming" someone is gay if they effectively state it themselves? Oh, and if you're planning to go through all the gay cats, you need to be aware of our List of gay, lesbian or bisexual people lists, which usually have sources where articles don't. We have a list of the unsourced here. If you could actually help us source people instead of removing their categories so we can never know about them and leave them unsourced forever, that would be good. Boothroyd only has a source because I insisted Dev find one, ie it was unsourced. Now it is sourced it is fine to label him as gay but the facgt that the subject of the article was fine with it is not enough. He might have seen it as a compliment and unsourced compliments are also absolutely subject to removal re BLP. We dont trust the subjects of articles to get their bios right (even an editor as respected as David), we rely on sources for that, and givent he nature of gay relations in our society this is an issue that needs handling with particular delicacy and I am glad to hear that for the most opart you are indeed on top of BLP, SqueakBox 17:36, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Taking a break

Sorry, but I'm taking a WikiBreak. Recently everything I try to do on Wikipedia turns to dust: my edits, even if just stylistic, are reverted, maintenance tags I add are instantly and repeatedly removed, advice I give to new editors is ignored, mediation attempts likewise, and just when I was thinking that list of bisexual people is the only article I ever worked on that's in reasonably good condition, a bunch of TerriNun-minded people are repeatedly trying to add those who've made explicit statements to the effect that they are not bisexual. I cannot bloody stand it anymore, and the idea that anyone should consider these flaming biphobes as part of my community makes me ill.

When (or if) I feel able to calmly edit Wikipedia again, I will be happy to rejoin the LGBT studies project, maybe translate some biographies or provide sources in Hebrew. I think the project could benefit from a more comprehensive worldwide perspective.

Oh, and I totally agree with you about Enter the Dragonfly. It was sluggish and the atmosphere was just not up to that of the original three games. The same could be said for its predecessors. I bought A New Beginning for my DS and actually it was alright. It wasn't classic platformer Spyro but as a game in itself it was pretty good.

wikiprojects and rfa

So, someone was suggesting that wikiprojects should "endorse" candidates for adminship. I would assume this would involve straw polling at the projects. Most of the relevant discussion is at User talk:Kelly Martin or will soon be in the archive there. So I ask, what do you think about WP:LGBT doing this? My personal opinion is "heck no", I personally won't have any wikiprojects endorsing me, and I think it amounts to politicking that should be strongly discouraged. My reference in the article about the use of the concept by European groups of transgendered persons has been removed. Is there going to be a native and non-native Wikipedia?
