Problem with image[edit]

Thanks for uploading the image File:Diamond Fly Cutting Machine.jpg, but there is a problem: when you uploaded the image, you don't seem to have selected any of the licensing options. You should get an automated warning about this shortly, but I'll try to explain the issue first in more comprehensible terms. Wikipedia takes copyrights very seriously. When you upload an image, you have to confirm who owns the rights to the image, and that Wikipedia has the legal right to use it. We do this with a set of licensing "tags", that make it easy to record this information. When you uploaded the image, there should have been a drop-down box giving the most common options.

Picking the right tag is a bit complicated. I can help. If you just copied the image from a website or other publication, though, we don't have the legal right to use it and the image will have to be deleted. In your comments you mention "Max Levy Autograph". Did you just take the image from their website, or from one of their publications?--Srleffler (talk) 16:49, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I thought that I selected a drop down box saying that is was my photo, but I couldn't go back and change it around once it was uploaded, at least not in way that I could find. I did see that clicking on the thumbnail didn't have that I uploaded it as the author, which I didn't understand. I work for Max Levy, and took the photo to add to this wiki article. 17:26, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
Great. I added your name to the file, as the "author" of the image. Now, you need to pick the license terms under which you want to release the image. The most common choices are described below (I copied this from one of the upload help pages). Pick a license and I'll either tag the image for you or talk you through how to do it yourself. As noted below, licensing under both CC-BY-SA and GFDL is recommended. --Srleffler (talk) 03:22, 25 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC-BY-SA) – This is the same license that is used for all text contributions on Wikipedia. It allows anyone to use the work as long as they credit you and distribute any modifications to the work under the same, similar or a compatible license.
  • GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) – This license was formerly used for Wikipedia text. It requires that a record of others' changes to the work and a copy of the 3,000-word license be included when distributing printed copies of the work. Any modifications to the work must also be licensed under the GFDL.
  • Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) – This license allows anyone to use or modify the work as long as they credit you. It is similar to the CC-BY-SA, but less restrictive.
  • Public domain – You give up all rights to the work and allow any person to use it for any purpose without restriction.

It is recommended that you license your work under both the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike and the GNU Free Documentation License. A list of other licenses that you can choose is available at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Free licenses.

I think that the two licenses you pointed out are the best idea, I am just not sure how to edit the image to include that. Could you help me out with that? 17:11, 25 August 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by David Casale (talkcontribs)

OK, all fixed. I added the license "tags" to the image page. The tags I added were "{{cc-by-sa-3.0|[[User:David Casale|David Casale]]}}" and "{{GFDL-user|David Casale|migration=redundant}}". If you were doing this instead of me, you would have used {{GFDL-self|migration=redundant}} instead of the GFDL-user tag.
Yes, this is completely opaque. The easy way to do it is to select the option you want from the drop-down box on the image upload page. The software then automatically fills in all this stuff for you. If you miss that, though, there are plenty of people around who can help you out. If you upload any more images and have trouble, feel free to ask me for help, or add the {{helpme}} tag to your talk page, along with an explanation of what help you need. Someone will come and give you a hand.--Srleffler (talk) 02:53, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
