Please Help

Hello Omarcheeseboro. Recently an article I had written was deleted by user Nuttah. Not having logged on in a while, I did not notice this happening. You were very helpful to me in the past. Two questions:
1. Is there any page history of a deleted article (in this case the article was "Gun Politics in Sweden," but was also cross referenced as "Swedish Gun Laws")?
2. It seems this user has many complaints on his talk page related to deletions of articles. He/she seems to spend a great deal of time deleting wikipedia articles. I have asked him for an explanation, but seeing the many many unanswered requests for explanation by other users, I am not optimistic. Can anything be done about a user abusing the ability to delete articles?

Well I see in your talk page you received the alert about the page. As for page history, there are instructions on how to retrieve it on the following link, which probably has other things of interest to you as well - Wikipedia:Why_was_my_page_deleted?. Good luck. Thank you for the response. I have read through the Wikipedia:Why_was_my_page_deleted? section and checked the Wikipedia:deletion_log. Unfortunately, it appears I have come to this rather late in the game. The article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_Politics_in_Sweden) was deleted on Dec 5. The deletion log does not appear to go back that far.
- Is there another way to access the old content short of contacting the [who can provide copies of deleted articles]?
- If not, do you have any suggestions on whom I should try to contact in order to obtain a copy of the old info?

No problem. I'm sure any of those admins will give you a copy of the deleted text, but try to find one who has been active recently. Click on their name and then the "User contributions" link on the left side toolbox. I'm not trying to give a breakup story that favors one side or the other, but sources besides the Kot book (which is meant to chronicle Wilco more-so than UT) are pretty hard to come by. Thank you very much! I was wondering if I should report the user to be blocked, but thought it would get complicated because most of the offending material would be deleted pages. I guess you could submit delete logs? (I'm pretty new to some of this more advanced Wikipedia stuff). Also, I was planning on watching the user's contributions. Do you know why you can't set a RSS feed (or any kind of alert) of a User's contribution history page? It would be much easier to follow vandals that way. Thanks for the message. And sorry that you made the trip to Charlottesville for such a lousy showing... I barely had the heart to make the updates about it. I'm living away from the DC area these days, but was in town to attend the Cal game. Gave me pretty high hopes for the season and thought they were a clinch for the Atlantic division, but I guess they haven't shaken the curse yet. I will be adding some info as I have time and inclination, but I have noticed that there is very little info regarding firearms laws by country and what exists is sadly lacking in format. The format I laid out there is obviously just a suggestion but hopefully the various pages by country can eventually start to incorporate those data fields (andpossibly others I haven't thought of) in some kind of unified and comparable fashion.SB Pete (talk) 00:39, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Well, you could find similiar articles about country's politics. Click the 'history' tab of the article and try to spot an editor who has contributed a substantial amount to the article. Go to the editor's talk page (like you've done with mine) and leave a message explaining what you're trying to do. They may be glad to help out. I can't guarantee this will help, and it may take some time, but it's the best way I can think of trying to find help.
About the language barrier, again, finding folks who has edited similiar articles on the country is a good start. They're most likely bi-lingual. Good luck. --Omarcheeseboro (talk) 01:00, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Alternative Country

Hey - thanks for making those changes on the alt.country page.

The second para in the history still needs work. E.g. the "however" in the first line has no force, since the rest of the sentence basically says the same thing as the first paragraph (and so there's no contrast!)

A broad thing like a music genre is a difficult thing to write a Wikipedia article on. There was someone inserting Bottle Rocket spam in a bunch of articles, but somehow he managed to help the alt country article a lot by including a quote from the Rough Guide. Wild Oak Trail

Your are correct in putting the Wild Oak Trail in the Ridge-and-Valley province. As stated in the Great Appalachian Valley page, the Valley of Virginia, including the Shenandoah Valley, forms the eastern edge of said province. For future reference the Ridge-and-Valley in Virginia/West Virginia is bound by the Blue Ridge to the east and Allegheny/Cumberland plateau to the west. If you don't see anything promotional/wrong with including "The Bottle Rockets continue to make original rock 'n' roll music today, with their 10th album slated for release in 2009." 1 in the second paragraph of the lead on an article on Missouri music in general (not alt-country, not rock n roll, Missouri MUSIC), then I really don't see the point in having a discussion with you. The link you incorrectly cited as a deadlink remains fully accessible. Simply scroll down the page for the article in its entirety.

The phrase you call ridiculous, "such good songs," appears nowhere in the article. You may be referring to "so many great songs," which is wording from the Factory Belt bio of Mr. Henneman. I have removed the subjective word "great" from the quote so as not to ruffle peacock feathers. The point is that numerous songs written early in his career are still mined today in his current releases.

"Considered to be the godfathers of the '90s alt-country/roots rock revival along with peers Uncle Tupelo,..." is a direct quote by Darryl Smyers of the Dallas Observer, and is clearly annotated as the source. Jason Ankeny of AllMusic is another source, stating, "Festus, MO's Bottle Rockets ranked as one of the leading lights of the 1990s roots rock revival,...."

Thank you for eliminating the message board links from this article as unreliable sources. While it is true that a message board link does not meet Wiki standards, I thought the value of reading a direct first-hand account of recording Uncle Tupelo's March 16-02, 1992 and Wilco's AM from the guitarist (Henneman) who played the landmark tracks was valuable to fans of the music. Alternative Country

The statement "Uncle Tupelo contemporaries the Bottle Rockets, who play with one foot in Ramones-style punk and the other in Motorhead-style metal"[1] continue touring fifteen years after sharing the stage with Uncle Tupelo for the last time in 1994" is not promo or spam, rather, it establishes a descriptive definition of an aspect of what is considered alt country sound. The paragraph is about fusion of influences comprising the alt country genre. My description does not promote, it describes what alt country sounds like and corroborates the Rough Guide block quote by giving examples. Additionally, since the sentence is in the History section and since the Bottle Rockets WERE and STILL ARE a vital innovative band (and were intrinsic to Uncle Tupelo historically) it is reasonable to mention that although Uncle Tupelo didn't survive, the Bottle Rockets continue to this day.

The inclusion of the Bottle Rockets is relevant and not meant to be promotional, rather it fit mirroring what was written about Ryan Adams, that he "continues to shape the genre today...." That said, I agree with your resolution of the Ryan A sentence. Perhaps stating, "the bands Whiskeytown, Bottle Rockets, Drive-By Truckers, and the Old 97's further developed this tradtion" and add that Drive-By Truckers and Bottle Rockets continue to do so in 2009" would be the comprehensive way of putting it.Writeful (talk) 15:44, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Appalachian music

On Monday, March 9, 2009, I created the article Appalachian music after reading the WikiProject Appalachia page. Someone attempted to restore the redirect to Old-time music, telling me that there was very little information. I undid that edit. However, they were correct regarding the amount of information in the article. Thus, I have a proposal: if we can, we can work together to improve and expand the Appalachian music article. Hi! I am writing about the comments you sent to Ann-Britt Sternfeldt about her editing on TheGoodTourist article warning her about vanadalism. She is very new to the Wikipedia and is finding it difficult to understand what is happening about the article. She does not really have a firm grasp of Wikipedia protocols yet. She also is not confident about how to write or edit on the Wikipedia - especially in English which, although she is quite fluent in conversation, is sometimes difficult for her - especially when it comes to the more subtle points of Wikpipedia editorial policies. I think she took the reference to her book off the page because she felt it might look as if she personally was being promoted too much thereby distracting attention from TheGoodTourist publishing venture which, I believe, is of great interest because of its focus of encouraging tourists to make their visits really positive for the locals and the environment as well as for themselves.

Ms. Sternfeldt is, I believe, not only puzzled but feeling misunderstood. I am sure she did it all in good faith and certainly did not intend to vandalise the article. Please, if you have any suggestions on how to improve the article and make it more relevant for Wikipedia's readers, let me know, and I will do my best to tidy things up and check with Ms. Sternfeld where necessary. She is, at the moment, staying with a friend not far from our home, before she sets on on further travels - so I can discuss any issues with her and try to explain any queries you might have and also why you thought she was vandalising the article. Location change (and reservations made) for DC meetup

We originally considered TGI Friday's in Foggy Bottom as the meetup location, however I stopped by TGI Friday's this evening to make reservations. I was less than impressed. They apparently don't take reservations, except perhaps if you call 24 hours ahead of time. The staff was not so helpful, and the menu has hardly anything vegetarian which is an issue for some people.

So, I checked out the Bertucci's pizza/Italian place across the street (21st & I St NW). Their staff couldn't have been more helpful, think it will be fairly quiet so we will be able to hear each other, and is a very suitable place for us. The Wire - darkmatter edit query

Hello, I noticed you removed a recent edit, which included links to the darkmatter Journal on the grounds it is not a reliable source. Is this in relation to the term 'academic' being used? The journal has an ISSN and is edited by senior academics in universities in the UK, and articles referenced have undergone an academic review process. However, if the issue is to do with the Journal's credentials in terms of appearing in academic citation indexes, then the term 'academic' could be removed, and the rest of the edit retained in the critical responses and external links section, as these list general sources. Well if you read wp:reliable sources and present objective evidence to prove that it is indeed a reliable source, I will be glad to revert my edits. One way you may do this is by paying particular attention to the scholarship section:
The scholarly acceptance of a source can be verified by confirming that the source has entered mainstream academic discourse, for example by checking the number of scholarly citations it has received in citation indexes. A corollary is that journals not included in such indexes should be used with caution.

Yes, I do now understand the criteria of a reliable source with reference to an academic source. I'm now querying that the darkmatter journal can be included merely as a general source, equivalent to other sources being referenced to in the critical responses and external sources. These other sources linked to, are considered legitimate and aren't academic sources. Therefore, if the edit was rewritten as "An online collection of articles on the racial politics of The Wire has been published by darkmatter Journal". Well, as I indicated, the journal is edited by established academics in senior posts in UK universities. They are them selves published in scholarly journals and regularly peer review for other academic journals. For your information, not all academic online journals appear in citation indexes, as this depends on impact factors. darkmatter has published many articles written by established academics concerning the politics of race. The contents of the The Wire special issue has undergone a review process. And many of the contributors are academics themselves. However, the reference to darkmatter now to be written as "An online collection of articles on the racial politics of The Wire has been published by darkmatter Journal" is not attempting to claim or indicate academic authority; it is merely indicating a collection of recently published articles. In this case now, it's not clear why darkmatter journal is not considered as reliable as other sources cited in on the wire page. For example, examining the external links, some of these are online magazines or blogs. How is darkmatter any less reliable than these sources? And to reiterate, there is no claim being made to academic authority in the proposed new edit. As for the external links, yes some of them are blogs, but they contain interviews. See #3 of WP:ELYES. That said, given your explanation of Darkmatter and a quick look at the content, I would have no problem with it being included as an external link. I would suggest giving a more informative (but brief) explanation of the journal and what Wire content it contains than you did the first time around. Note that I'm only one user, and as with any wikipedia article (especially since this article obtained wp:feature article status), there may be other editors who have their own opinion about the link.
However, as far as using Darkmatter as a reference, I'm not convinced it meets any criteria for a wp:reliable source, so do not agree with using in the body of the article as a reference. Thank you

WP:Run and WP:Athletics

Feel free to continue adding both projects to pages. I had hoped that starting up a new, broader project would bring together more editors. The run project has been verging on inactive for quite some time now and seems to consist of little more than a talk page. That's why I hoped to bring the project together with WPAthletics. The fact that only you have responded to my suggestion on the run page is indicative of the inactivity. The prominence of sock puppeteer racepacket surely isn't helping either.

Middle- and long-distance running are certainly included in the Athletics project. I personally hope that the One mile article can be improved in future as it represents the rise of modern athletics quite well: runners chasing the 4-minute-mile for so long, and runners surpassing that mark within days of each other is quite a story. Incorporation of parts of Mile run world record progression and Four-minute mile into a main topic seems like a start.

Regarding darkmatter not meeting the reliability criteria as a reference in the critical responses section, it is disappointing to find you still don't consider it as acceptable. It appears you are judging the journal on the basis of:

In relation to the critical responses section, all the existing references cited are from mainstream (predictable) media outlets, and the majority lack any academically informed analysis of the politics of race in The Wire. darkmatter Journal is the first to do so, and as indicated previously, it clearly has legitimate academic credentials. Many of the the authors contributing to the special issue operate in universities. For example, two of the authors are publishing an academic edited book on The Wire. If you were to inquire amongst the academic community what online academic source they would turn to if they wanted a critically informed account of the racial politics of The Wire, they would now cite darkmatter. While the journal curruently does not appear in established citation indexes, this does not exclude it from academic legitimacy or relevancy.

The economy of academic citation and impact factors is a contested, politicized terrain within academia itself. Moreover, the work on race remains a relatively marginalized field of study within academia. There are few academic race/ethnicity journals with credible citation and impact factors relative to other mainstream social sciences journals. Moreover, many well cited journal's are closed/subscriber only journals (against the principal of open access).

The criteria of reliability you are claiming does not consider the politics of citation, and nor considers the context of how some fields of study - such as race - remain marginalized. Nor does it say journals not significantly cited should be simply excluded - it's a judgment call.

There's a huge irony operating here too. Amongst the academic community, wikipedia is not considered to be a reliable source because it does not undergo an academic review process. Yet, journal's such as darkmatter are keen to establish open access to knowledge and examine the grounds on which knowledge is legitimised. By not including darkmatter as a legitimate reference in this instance reinforces a hierarchy of knowledge. And wasn't wikipedia developed as an alternative to such hierarchies?

Readers and students coming across The Wire wikipedia article, and not finding a substantial reference to a race analysis cited in the critical responses section undermines the quality of the current entry for The Wire. While a narrow interpretation of academic reliability can be readily applied, what also needs to be considered is the politics of knowledge, and how some knowledge remains marginalized, within academia and online. Shelton Laurel Massacre

Thanks for the heads-up. In fact, I have the book sitting on my desk as we speak. I was amazed that you added the picture of David Shelton to the page soo quickly after I created it. It was almost like I was in the Twilight Zone! I do plan to expand the article with more detail.

I used to spend a lot of time backpacking in that area back in the 70s and 80s but I was not aware of the Shelton Laurel Massacre site. I actually got interested in it when my brother--David Shelton--was asked if he was related to the NC Sheltons when he was in NC on a business trip. I guess we are some whicha way, but I have no direct evidence. Keep watching the page for additions.

Shelton graves

The Shelton Laurel Massacre occurred near the middle of the Shelton Laurel Valley, about 10 miles south of the Shelton graves on the A.T. (although you can see the upper Shelton Laurel from that stretch of the trail between the graves and Devil Fork). The Sheltons that are buried on the A.T. were returning Union veterans killed in an ambush at that site in 1864 (see here). All 13 slain in the massacre are buried in a cemetery near White Rock.

I'm glad you uploaded this image, however, since I'm going to expand the Bald Mountains article in the coming weeks, and I haven't had time to get a picture of these graves myself. Bms4880 (talk) 19:45, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Correct. "Shelton" is like "Smith" in Madison County, which causes confusion. Most of the guys killed in the Shelton Laurel Massacre were Sheltons. Two of the three killed in the ambush above Devil Fork Gap were Sheltons. The 13-year old killed in the massacre was named David Shelton, and one of the veterans killed above Devil Fork Gap was named David Shelton. One of the two initial settlers in the valley in the 1790s was named David Shelton, and the name was probably passed down. Some Sheltons probably even fought for the 64th NC, since the regiment did recruiting in Shelton Laurel, but I don't know if any were present at the time of the massacre. It is not clear that Notability comes before wp:athlete. For example, a lot of professors get local media coverage and web coverage. However, if a professor can't meet WP:PROF, it will be deleted, unless the person is know for some other, non-professorial reason. The same should apply for wp:athlete. Otherwise, every middle of the pack runner can submit a paragraph to a "tell your story" blog on a marathon website and then claim to meet WP:N for his own self-written Wikipedia article. At a time when another person had already run marathons on 159 consecutive weekends and two other people were running 50 marathons on 50 consecutive days, the fiddy2 project was not that remarkable. I agree. However, "it takes more than just a short burst of news reports about a single event or topic to constitute sufficient evidence of notability - particularly for individuals known for one event (WP:BLP1E). For example, routine news coverage of such things as announcements, sports, and tabloid journalism are not sufficient basis for a topic to have its own standalone article." Spirit of the Marathon

For the cast and crew section, a simple list doesn't work too well. It's best to discuss how the cast/crew were selected, their thoughts on filming, what they had to do to prepare for the roles, etc. The critical reception section should come after the production section. I would also recommend expanding the awards section. There should be some explanation to the awards/nominations instead of just a table. Also, since some of the sections are brief, try and include another section if possible, or expand on the current ones. I invite you to look at some of our project's best articles to see how you can improve the quality of the article further. Consider using the resources department to find additional sources to help you expand the article. Let me know if you need help with any of this, and good job on the article so far. --Happy editing! Omarchesseboro - I am about to move on to my first large article and your help is entirely responsible for encouraging me to do so. The article's subject will be Corner Theatre E.T.C., of Baltimore. There is one final question I have for you, if I may intrude on you one final time. I am in the process of trying to upload images and have, of course been flagged for copyright issues. The photos I have tried to post and others I will want to be posting for the next article are all publicity shot/artwork. I have been to the page cited for these issues, but find it difficult to extrapolate a workflow for actual application. Volunteer opportunity in Bethesda, Thursday, July 16

The Wikimedia Foundation will be conducting an all-day Academy at the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, Maryland, on Thursday, July 16. The team that will be teaching at the Academy, a mix of paid staff and volunteers, is looking for four more volunteers to be teaching assistants, providing one-to-one assistance in workshops whenever a workshop participant has a problem following the instructional directions. (We currently have two editors signed up as teaching assistants, and are looking for a total of six.)

The NIH editing workshops are only for two hours, but volunteers are asked to meet the Wikimedia Foundation team at the hotel in Bethesda at about 7:15 a.m. (time to be finalized shortly) and to stay for the entire day, which ends at 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided. (The full schedule can be found here.)

The team is not necessarily looking for expert editors (though they are welcome), just people who can help novices who might get stuck when trying to do some basic things. If you've been an editor for at least 3 months, and have done at least 500 edits, you probably qualify.

If you're interested, please send John Broughton an email. If you might be interested, but would like further information, please post a note on his user talk page, so that he can respond there, and others can see what was asked.

Thank you very much for your kind Advice, Omar, I enjoy editing on Wikipedia but am, unfortunately not a naturally gifted programmer and some of my edits can be long and laborius to complete. Could you recommend and tools, bots or templates that I could use to make things easier for myself ?

Dear Cheese man,

I understand you're trying to sweep the ugliness of Morganton under the (presumably enormous) rug, but can you at least leave my NPOV flag up? If you have some problem with my source that's fine, but I'm a little unclear as to the problem with using a fairly self-explanatory photo--along with the information on the page it came from--as a source. Obviously you know nothing about Texas Country music. The Driftin' Outlaw Band has been playing in and around Texas for over ten years, the bio put in Wikipedia is a true history of the band, it may seem ridiculous, but that is because you have never met or seen the members that make up the band. You can cross reference the members names with the Texas prison systems, for proof of their time in prison. Along with the maternity suits placed against David Allan Coe. The reason you may find no reference to the band is because up until the last few months the band has been completely against all technology, generally playing where ever and whenever they can with a work ethic of only word to mouth. Trying to shadow many of their main influences such as Hank Williams and Robert Johnson who traveled around town to town playing their music. All releases have also been self released in only limited quantity, because of major record labels refusal to accept their ways of promotion and touring. HotCat

When using HotCat to move people into more specific "People from" categories, you can hit the plus sign next to the "People from Maryland" one and then change the test in the box to the more specific county or city one and then hit OK. This then removes the old and adds the new one in a single edit, which is faster and less work on the servers. Happy editing. Aboutmovies (talk) 17:42, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

I edited the Stephens page and made a lot of cuts, in line with the first "flag" on the page. It's now much less "cluttered". I am currently working on the references and hope to have that cleared up soon as well. And thanks for the tip on the signature - will do it this way from now on...

Cross-country Images

Please can you explain how the captions you prefer add substantially to the article and do not just adrevtise places within the United States and give an impression that only the USA host any form of cross Countyr events.--10:51, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

As I said before in an edit summary, if you have an issue with the images not representing a worldwide view, a quick search at wikicommons [6] seems to offer some very good options.
Identifying the location/meet name in an image's caption is appropriate. Again, if you have a problem with the type of images being used, there is nothing stopping you from replacing some of them...instead of removing valuable information. --Omarcheeseboro (talk) 11:02, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

I figured this was obvious, but when looking at image in an article on a general subject, it is nice to know where the image is taken. If you google: Kimber Fritz, you will see my acting debut(in the movie "Traffic"), but you will also see some of my athletic accomplishments. I competed live(for the "Kentucky Bourbons" under the name Jerry Fritz) on ESPN's first ever televised sporting event: September 7, 1979 the "World Series of Professional Softball"(google: ESPN Early Founder, for more). I also played for the "Colorado Silver Bullets"(briefly)in 1994 under the name Lisa Fritz-(google: Women's Minor League Baseball Team Gets Major Response-L.A. Times article by Jean Marbella). I also fought in the first ever "World Tough Woman" contest, live on pay-per-view(Cobo Arena, Detroit) in October 1996, put on by Art Door.

Yes, I read the conflict of interest and now realize that I can't be placing my name. I apologize for this. However, I have lived in the town of Woodstock Vermont. I am only reachable at the mailing address of South Pomfret, but physically I live in Barnard, Vermont. It's a bit confusing. However, if somebody else puts me as a notable resident of Woodstock, Vermont that is not incorrect as I did live there, just as many of the people on the list lived there for a finite period of time. I will make sure that the entry under my name is changed to say that I live in Barnard, because I physically live there and then my name will be appropriately added to the list of notable people, Sinclair Lewis among them.

In terms of deserving to be among the notables, I am perhaps one of the few very novelists in the state of Vermont who has international standing in terms of my work being discussing in many different foreign as well as domestic venues, newspapers, literary conferences and is widely translated.
