Lost AFD

Hi, just to let you know, something went wrong when you relisted this AFD but accidently commented it out, and it is still open. Should I re-list it? or as you are an admin and didn't participate you could close it? ascidian | talk-to-me 18:23, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for that notification, Ascidian! I think I'll be staying away from AfD for a while (or at least not with the use of the closer tool). Saya Mochizuki

I plan to contest your speedy deletion of this, you did not even inform me that it was up for speedy, it's not a new article, and was improperly deleted. This one should have been AfD at most. Hi, Chris. First, it's usually standard procedure for the person nominating it for speedy deletion to notify the creator, not the deleting admin (this is usually redundant, and therefore not commonly done). Granted, I definitely should have checked, though I don't normally do this because it's commonplace (and is even noted in the template) for the tagger.
Second, the article did not assert a whole lot of notability. Calling her an 'actor, model, idol' (etc.) still does not show us that she is notable enough for a Wikipedia article. With that said, however, this appears to show just enough media coverage, in my opinion, to pass. I'm going to undelete this, because she seems notable enough to have an article of her own, even if the article did not assert much notability. Please edit the article further to show evidence of notability, or it could be re-tagged.

Open Proxies

I have several questions : 1. What is an open proxy? 2. How is an open proxy disruptive? 3. What is a zombie computer? 4. What is a Static IP address? 5. What is a Dynamic IP address? 6. ^ overall, what is the difference between a static IP address and a Dynamic IP address? 7. And how exactly does an open proxy constantly change IP addresses?

No problem, RF. An open proxy in its general sense is a proxy that anyone can use. Now, in the specific, more Wikipedia sense, open proxies are usually anonymising IP addresses that allow one to edit while hiding your computer's IP address. So if you used an open proxy with the IP address 11.11.11.11 and your (the one your internet service provider gave) IP address is 212.33.566.01, in Wikipedia's edit history it would completely mask your IP address and show up as 11.11.11.11. It is a bit difficult to explain, but I think that gives you the idea. Basically, these are blocked pretty much for the reason expected: open proxies allow vandals to edit under a different IP even after they have been blocked indefinitely by their home IP address. Also, the edits are so difficult to track from these proxies that we find it is just easier to block them immediately when they are identified. Does that answer you question?
Now, a zombie computer is (again, trying to answer this to the best of my knowlege without being particularly computer-knowledgeable) a computer that has been taken over by a hacker using a virus or something similar. The computer is then used to perform illegal or otherwise bad tasks while the computer's owner, who doesn't know the computer is being taken over, gets blamed for everthing that the hacker is doing. This allows the hacker to do whatever they want without getting caught, because they are controlling a 'zombie' (i.e., one's computer, without consent).
A static IP address is just an IP that remains 'static' and does not change. A dynamic IP is one that frequently changes, like those that sockpuppets use to evade blocks to further vandalise. Open proxies do not rapidly change IP addresses; I think that is where you are confused. They merely hide your IP address and use the proxy's name (the IP, like 11.11.11.11) instead, so you can do things without getting caught. This is why many people don't like open or anonymising proxies, even outside of Wikipedia. They tend to be used by hackers and computer criminals to hide personal information that could help them get caught.

Good explanation, Mizu ;) I'd add that some Internet Service Providers assign their customers' IP addresses dynamically (I believe British Telecom do so in the UK), so you get a different IP address every time you connect, while others give their customers static addresses that rarely change (a UK example is Virgin Media). Having a dynamic IP doesn't mean you're a sockpuppet, it just depends on who you get your internet access from. Hi Bruce, sorry I couldn't get to you sooner. I would like to get the opinions of Old Yeller and MBisanz before I make any decisions, as Old Yeller was the lister and MBisanz was the closing admin. Also, the consensus to delete was mainly based on notability; references were a secondary concern. I'll direct their attention to this topic and we can talk it out here, if it's agreeable with you. :-)
