Welcome to the madhouse; please say hello

Welcome[edit]

Hi, CopoCop. This is NOT some automated message...it's from a real person. You can talk to me right now. Welcome to Wikipedia! I noticed you've just joined, and wanted to give you a few tips to get you started. If you have any questions, please talk to us. The tips below should help you to get started. Best of luck!  Chzz  ►  00:44, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ようこそ
  • You don't need to read anything - anybody can edit; just go to an article and edit it. Be Bold, but please don't put silly stuff in - it will be removed very quickly, and will annoy people.
  • Ask for help. Talk to us live, or edit this page, put {{helpme}} and describe what help you need. Someone will reply very quickly - usually within a few minutes.
  • Edit existing articles, before you make your own. Look at some subjects that you know about, and see if you can make them a bit better. For example, Wikipedia:Cleanup#2009.
  • When you're ready, read about Your first article. It should be about something well-known, and it will need references.

Good luck with editing; please drop me a line some time on my own talk page.

There's lots of information below. Once again, welcome to the fantastic world of Wikipedia!

Got your note[edit]

Hi Copo, I got your msg at my talk page and commented at the page you mention.

Just from my own curiosity, I have to ask: have you edited here before, under a different user name or extensively as an IP user? It's no big deal, many people spend lots of time reading and watching before they ever start editing (like me for instance). It's just striking that you jump straight into such a complex topic. I think I made at least 10 edits before I started making my opinions known in controversial areas. :) (And I've not been afraid to wade into anything since those first 10 ;)

Like I say, no big deal, it's just nice to know the history, either publicly or via mail. Don't take this the wrong way, I'm just curious and you don't even have to offer a word of reply! Regards. Franamax (talk) 00:57, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I have edited articles before, but never created proposals or been particularly engaged in how things work. I edit as an IP, but I also have an account which is directly associated with my real life identity. I actually created this account somewhat hastily because I wanted to edit during work hours. You see, I got a bit caught up in this due to the remarkable reaction by User:NBeale. If there is a need to reveal my identity, I will obviously not lose my job because of a few hours of procrastination. However, I did not intend to propose anything controversial or get into a controversial area. I've never before had any problems editing anonymously or under my real name. The copyright violations seemed to be completely uncontroversial, simple mistakes. In order to not be a "silly anon" next time I report on such matters, I have this account. :) CopoCop (talk) 21:55, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. Without expanding too much on my opinions on using account names associated with RL, I've seen a few situations where that doesn't work out well...
My advice would be that you enable your email on at least one of your accounts and privately contact one or two editors you feel you can trust and advise them of your circumstances. They can help you to ensure that you don't get caught in any of the various "uses multiple accounts" snares.
I've always considered myself as pretty trustworthy for other people (as far as my own life decisions go, different story there :). MRG strikes me as pretty solid. And if you want, I can put you in private contact with several others who can offer advice. It's very important that you keep your different roles separate, so having access to impartial views can only help you to that end. Franamax (talk) 23:00, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, the more I think about it, the more it makes sense to only use my real name account. I can't really imagine why I would need to be anonymous in any of these discussions, and I obviously don't plan to be editing during work. It was fun to create an account with a silly name, but right now I don't see any reason why I couldn't be making these edits as myself. I will e-mail in the next few days for further advice. Copyrights/Talk userfied[edit]

Hi. Since you haven't worked on this for a while and it is now outdated due to the licensing transition (somebody changed a bit of it, but the new licensing is kind of complex), I've moved this to your userspace for further development. It's now at User:CopoCop/Copyrights. Please let me know if you want more feedback. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 11:08, 18 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
