Problems with Inykhnum[edit]

Some overeager user keeps reverting my update on Inykhnum. I simply updated, emended and actualized the article after standards like Penebui, Sehener and such. Would you help me out here? Regards;--Nephiliskos (talk) 09:08, 25 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Persoonia nutans[edit]

Hello, Casliber -- I was looking at the article on Persoonia nutans, and I made a few minor copy-edits. I noticed that near the beginning there was an incomplete sentence. I thought about just adding it to the end of the previous sentence after a comma, but I thought that would imply that Robert Brown collected it, and I wasn't sure it was he who collected it in 1802. Can you look at it and fix that? Corinne (talk) 23:47, 25 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Corinne: I am pretty sure it was him but not 100%. I have made it a sentence that 'sits on the fence' in that regard for the moment. I will nose around some sources. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 00:46, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
O.K. Corinne (talk) 00:49, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah it's him. If it was someone else, he'd have noted it in the original source. Added now. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 01:00, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Persoonia terminalis[edit]

I just read Persoonia terminalis. It is a very well written article. I just made a few small edits; hope you approve of them. There is one sentence that is not clear to me. It is this sentence which appears in the Ecology section:

 • Bees of subgenus Filiglossa in the same genus that also specialise in feeding on Persoonia flowers do not appear to be effective pollinators.

In the same genus as what? Are you saying that there are other bees in a genus (what genus?) that specialise in feeding on Persoonia flowers but this one subgenus does not feed on Persoonia flowers and thus is not an effective pollinator? Or feeds on Persoonia terminalis but is not an effective pollinator anyway? Corinne (talk) 00:26, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Corinne: thanks for the edits, they look fine. The "same genus" is Leioproctus, mentioned in the sentence immediately before (i.e. these bees are related to the other bees and in the same genus but do not appear to pollinate the flowers). I thought it was clear - do you think I need to insert "Leioproctus" somehow there...? Or add as footnote? Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 00:51, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I changed the sentence slightly. What do you think? If you don't like "that" genus, we can change it back to "the". Corinne (talk) 01:13, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I like the flow better, but added a comma to highlight the contrastive. My preference is slightly for "the" over "that" but not strongly so. Happy to go with consensus - both @Checkingfax: and @Sainsf: on the issue of "the" vs "that". Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 02:54, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the addition of a comma there, I know some editors like a comma before "but", but I generally do not add a comma unless "but" is introducing a clause. Here, what follows "but" is simply a second verb phrase for the same subject ("Bees of subgenus Filiglossa"). Also, a comma represents where a native speaker would pause, and I think most native speakers would not pause there. But it's your article, and it's a stylistic choice, so it's fine. Corinne (talk) 03:09, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Corinne: Yes, this is something to look at! I guess "the" would look better; from all that I have read on Wikipedia, "that" looks a bit awkward, while "the", I think, suits to the style of writing. About the second point you raised, it is not just Cas Liber's choice that matters. This is gonna be an FA, so the style used here must adhere primarily to the MoS and not just personal preferences. I do not know the Australian layman, so I guess whichever style goes with the Australian reader should be preferred. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 04:31, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sainsf I agree. I'd be interested if you could point to something specific in the MoS, though. Corinne (talk) 04:37, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Corinne: About this... well, I have never been deep enough into the MoS. I can't particularly suggest anything for the situation at hand - I must skim through it. Meanwhile, I think our friend FunkMonk can help out with this. You see, FunkMonk has often reminded me of many little points of the MoS! Sainsf <^>Talk all words 04:42, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I think we are interested in MOS:SERIAL. Can you make something of it that could help here? Sainsf <^>Talk all words 04:50, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, sorry, my knowledge about the MOS is mainly restricted to the parts about layout and media. As a non-native English speaker, I always tend to list articles for copy-edit before nominating them at FAC, so I don't trust my English skills entirely... FunkMonk (talk) 04:53, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ultimately I think these are minor stylistic issues and there are arguments for each. So not that fussed (on comma etc.) MOS is a guideline anyway. Not policy. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 06:02, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Cas. What is the FA status on P. t.? Cheers! Checkingfax {Talk} 00:39, 17 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
How it goes is like this - once an article gets three reasonably detailed reviews resulting in supports and the coordinators haven't noticed any obvious errors, it requires an image review, source review (i.e. check formatting on references that they are consistent), and spot check of sources (i.e. is the material in the article supported by sources...and ensuring there is no copyvio.) Articles with outstanding checks are listed at Wikipedia_talk:Featured_article_candidates#Image.2Fsource_check_requests (as you can see, there is a bit of a backlog). I try and check there and do checks on other folks' from time to time :) Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 02:59, 17 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Crinum pedunculatum[edit]

WCSP here regards Crinum pedunculatum as a variety of Crinum asiaticum, as does the (old) Flora of Australia online here. You may know of more recent Australian sources with a position on this issue. Unless there are sources that disagree, I'm inclined to merge the two articles. Peter coxhead (talk) 20:11, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Peter coxhead: I think I agree - i was musing on the move of that page to a variety page, but need to review the literature whether anyone has found any differences at all. I have this thing growing in my garden and have mused on wirting about it before. Let me just take a look at the literature to see if there is any merit in having it at a varietal or subspecies page or just merge. Gimmme 48-72 hours....Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 21:52, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Fine, I'll leave it to you (I've just noticed that Commons has it at the var. name). It's interesting to me that you grow it in your garden. There's a plant labelled "Crinum pedunculatum" growing in the temperate greenhouse of the local botanical gardens here in Birmingham (England) – it's very large, about 6-7 ft when in flower; we certainly couldn't grow it outside! I've also seen plants labelled just "Crinum asiaticum" growing in a botanical garden in Malaysia; they were somewhat shorter, but otherwise appear very similar in the photos I have – not that this proves anything. Peter coxhead (talk) 23:50, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
They can get pretty meaty that's for sure. I've seen them used as street plantings here. I'll go into my garden this afternoon and take and upload some snaps. Sometimes it's nice living in a frost-free climate.....Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 00:30, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There's a pertinent note about the C. asiaticum group "mess" at the bottom of the New South Wales Flora Online entry for Crinum pedunculatum [1]--Melburnian (talk) 01:36, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I have also found this. Interesting read but not adding a huge amount...I saw the "mess" comment and chuckled. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 02:23, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
And also this. Both seem to regard pedunculatum as a taxon distinct from asiaticum. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 13:12, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Garamond review[edit]

Wow, thanks for all the feedback! It's clear to me that I need to add a lot more general explanation (this is an amateur interest, but as you may have gathered it's something I'm quite interested in) and am working on this now, and also on upgrading some of the references.

I've also put in a gallery with a few pictures that wouldn't fit in the main body of the article as viewed on a normal desktop screen, and am looking into adding a timeline to keep facts a bit clearer. (This is something I've put in my rewrite of the Bembo article, which I've also been getting ready for a GA nom, to give you some idea of what I'm planning.)

I've jotted some notes in the GA nom page about plans, but I wouldn't bother taking another look just yet until I've got everything you flagged up cleaned up. Blythwood (talk) 15:49, 30 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I think I've now finished rewriting the text. Rereading the sources has given me ideas for a few extra pictures as illustrations, but some example pictures of some of the more difficult things to visualise (like how punches and matrices work) are now in the gallery. I've added a timeline, which is maybe duplicating the prose text, but I hope provides a good reference given how much content there is in the article now. Blythwood (talk) 22:15, 31 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Blythwood: sorry about delay - will get to it soon. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 03:07, 1 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Overjustification of your Talk page[edit]

Hi Cas. All the posts on your Talk page justify left/right wall to wall after a soft line break. That is because near the top of your page your archive styling has an unclosed div> tag.

If you want the justification to cease after the archive box and not run all the way down the page, simply add a </div> tag right after the |} which will close the archive box template.

Currently, this is the line that starts the justification:
<div style="font-family: Arial, san-serif; font-size: 10pt; text-align: justify;">

And, this is where you want to stop it:
* Archive 53: January 2016 –
|}

So, add a closing div tag like this:
* Archive 53: January 2016 –
|}
</div>

Cheers! Checkingfax {Talk} 09:03, 31 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Move template from userspace to main template space[edit]

Hi, Casliber! I hope you can consult me on the matter. There are current templates , , and , which redefine a color from defined in the HSL color space to that very color in the RGB color space. I have constructed templates that do the conversion from the HSV color space to the RGB space: User:R8R Gtrs/Template:HSVtoRGB.R, User:R8R Gtrs/Template:HSVtoRGB.G, User:R8R Gtrs/Template:HSVtoRGB.B, and User:R8R Gtrs/Template:HSVtoHEX, which collects the data obtained from the previous three templates. They could be useful for other editors, and I think it would be a good idea to transfer them to the main template space; what is the procedure? Of course, I could simply copy and paste the code, but that would ruin the histories of changes.--R8R (talk) 15:04, 31 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@R8R Gtrs: Hmm, my guess would be either post on the Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals) page or find a parent graphics help page in wikipedia space that might be a page to give it context. Something like Help:Using colours maybe? Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 19:50, 31 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Soon after I posted the question here, Checkingfax resolved the issue on my talk page. Thanks for your trouble!--R8R (talk) 08:24, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Unhelpful edits[edit]

Hi Cas. I see most of these eight edits as being unhelpful. I almost did a rollback on all eight. Cheers! Checkingfax {Talk} 18:52, 31 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Here's the thing. The IP is right in one sense that new species should be introduced to text by their full binomial name...though one could argue if we're talking about hybridising it is obvious they are from the same genus. Having terminalis subspecies in the taxobox possibly the better option, and linking to frost is ok. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 19:45, 31 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Take the Lead! contest[edit]

Casliber, I loved the idea of this contest, but sorry, I've been less impressed by the implementation. I wouldn't come here to crib about it only you said on the contest talk page that you were considering repeating it.

Seven of the eight prizes were to be picked randomly; after the event it's announced that all eight will be. So no judgement on merit - a relatively trivial improvement to a lead has as good a chance of winning as an in-depth quality job. This is an incentive to send in loads of entries with not much work done on each, as more entrants would realise next time round. Not the way surely to achieve the real improvements in lead quality that we would like to see?

I realise you will be very busy with Arbcom at present, but others could have been asked to help. If you do re-run the contest I'd suggest recruiting a panel of judges, drawing up some criteria of merit for them to judge by, and rewarding merit as well as quantity. Nonetheless, all credit to your initiative that got some attention to 600 leads this past month: Noyster (talk), 21:10, 1 February 2016 (UTC) (Not myself a contestant)[reply]

@Noyster: When I was looking over all the entries I found myself thinking, "how on earth am I going to rank these to find the best one?" But you're right. I reserve the right to do a 180 again and pick a winner. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 01:31, 2 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You will find I have made a comment on the contest talk page that needs a response. I do not think the distribution of prizes by ballot is a good idea. I benefited in this instance but would like to have seen a fairer distribution of prizes. As to picking the best lead improvement, you could require each contestant to indicate which one or two of their entries they thought was the best, and restrict the final adjudication to those articles. Cas Liber, I thought I'd let you know that the nominator had responded to your review. Since that response didn't include a new suggested hook to replace the problematic ones, either a suggestion could come from you or I suppose you could point out that without a satisfactory hook, you wouldn't have any option other than to close the nomination... There have been a couple of hook suggestions made, responding to your request at WT:DYK. I am concerned by the suggester's comment that the Background section is confusing; if it is, is this article ready for DYK to begin with? BlueMoonset (talk) 04:29, 7 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
See my note there - I can understand why. Have a read and see if you agree. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 06:57, 7 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Honestly, having puzzled my way through, I think the writing is the problem: it's just not very good at explaining what happened. Take the first Background sentence: Over the past several decades, Corsican nationalism has been calling for the island's recognition as a nation since French annexation. What is "Corsican nationalism"? A party? A movement? Something else? And "as a nation since French annexation" would lead one to believe that the annexation occurred several decades ago, not nearly two and a half centuries. Is this a modern independence movement? It seems that way to me, so why not say so. And why not explain the political situation to start with: Genoese control for over 400 years, moves toward a republic in the 1750s, but the French take over in 1768 after Genoa cedes control in the Treaty of Versailles that year. Basically, unless you click on every single wikilink and read up on it, and then click on wikilinks in the linked articles, you don't have any idea what happened. The same thing with the second sentence: I assumed the referendum took place after the 2014 cease fire, when it was actually conducted in 2003. So I guess I don't agree: I don't think this article is ready for prime time. I think it ought to get a thorough copy edit before it is passed through to the main page. On a technical point, DYKs can't pass as long as there are bare URL refs, and the article has one now (FN3). BlueMoonset (talk) 08:23, 7 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I guess I was giving them the benefit of the doubt - I too was puzzled by the first sentence and had to read it a few times (and click links) before I understood. So I am happy to concede that as the more i think of it, it is describing a complex situation but it should be presentable in clearer sentences. 2016 GA Cup[edit]

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016 GA Cup

Greetings, all!

We would like to announce the start of the 3rd GA Cup, a competition that seeks to encourage the reviewing of Good article nominations! Thus far, there have been two GA Cups; both were successful in reaching our goals of significantly reducing the traditionally long queue at GAN, so we're doing it again. Currently, there are over 500 nominations listed and about 450 articles waiting to be reviewed. We hope that we can again make an impact this time.

The 3rd GA Cup will begin on March 1, 2016. Four rounds are currently scheduled (which will bring the competition to a close on July 31, 2016), but this may change based on participant numbers. There will be slight changes to the scoring system, based upon feedback we've received in the months since GA Cup #2. The sign-up and submissions process will remain the same. We're also looking to spice up the competition a bit by running parallel competitions. Finally, there's a possibility of assisting a WikiProject Good Articles backlog drive in the last three weeks of February, before our competition. Please stay tuned for more information as we get it.

Sign-ups for the upcoming competition are currently open and will close on February 20, 2015. Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors, so sign-up now!

If you have any questions, take a look at the FAQ page and/or contact one of the judges.

Cheers from 3family6, Figureskatingfan, Jaguar and MrWooHoo.

To subscribe or unsubscribe to future GA Cup newsletters, please add or remove your name to our mailing list. If you are a participant, you will be on the mailing list no matter what as this is the easiest way to communicate between all participants.

Can you kindly fix references to your contributions in the history section? I could not add from my book source beyond the 17th century as the text given in the google url [2] is only upto page 29. In case you are able to get hold of this book you could add more. Thanks. --Nvvchar. 15:11, 16 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That's weird - half the book disappeared from google....I can see different bits but I think the article needs reorganising. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 19:25, 16 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Google Books puts caps on reading copyrighted material, and limits the amount you can see once you've read a certain number of pages or viewed something more that a few times; they also show different pages depending on which country you're in. (This is why I oppose including GBooks links in articles; it confuses readers, who try to verify the sources and get dead links.) You can sometimes get around it by installing Hola and changing your apparent country to the USA, which has laxer copyright laws, or by using multiple browsers. ‑ Iridescent 19:43, 16 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That seems to kick in rarely and with no rhyme or reason really...Thanks for the tip on Hola....Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 20:18, 16 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It's in the news but ITN has refused it. I'm not sure if you're involved in the GA cup or some other drive but this seems a good candidate for promotion, one way or another. I'll put it on my watchlist and chip in but the topic could use a local expert, please. Andrew D. (talk) 07:55, 19 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting. I did see the story and had meant to expand but have been sidetracked. Oh well, I'll take a look. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 09:28, 19 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

An advice[edit]

It seems that depending of demographic targeting of a topic an article could be written or look too liberal or too conservative as User talk:ParkH.Davis shows for example. Have you notice that? In my specific case I'm part of the discussion about Talk:Peyton Manning and we are going to nowhere. I think a more varied brainstorm in talk pages from different kinds of editors would help. What are your thoughts about that? Leo Bonilla (talk) 04:35, 24 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Pictor[edit]

I don't know if you are the one who deserves credit for the article on Pictor, but, if so, congratulations. I intend to read it through soon, but just now I was looking at the images, and I have a question. In the de Lacaille drawing (well, I should say the c. 1756 drawing) of the constellation showing the easel and palette, Canopus is shown to the right of the easel. In the photograph of the night sky showing the constellation, the bright star, which the caption says is Canopus, is to the left of the line drawn to show the constellation. I'm just wondering why Canopus is on the right in the diagram and on the left in the photograph. Corinne (talk) 00:12, 28 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

DYK Queue 5 issue[edit]

Cas Liber, Queue 5 was promoted with an incorrectly formatted hook; the Kankakee Mallow does not have the required space after the ellipsis, and needs to.

If you could please fix this, it would be greatly appreciated. And you might want to make a habit of checking for such formatting issues when promoting preps to queues, because I've caught quite a few at prep recently but I'm not on often enough to catch them reliably: things like the parentheses around "(pictured)" not being italicized when they should be, and that missing space after the ellipsis as happened this time. Many thanks, and thanks for doing so many prep to queue promotions. BlueMoonset (talk) 05:48, 15 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

DYK: Strugnell's haiku[edit]

Can you help on this please? After my DYK was correctly promoted to queue 5, some editors took it upon themselves to change the hook, without notifying me as the hook creator that they were doing so, and got the hook changed so that it is now incorrect. See here. I have relisted the original DYK request. Can you either (ideally) allow the DYK to go through with the originally promoted hook ( ... that Strugnell's Haiku adumbrate cherry blossoms, hair loss and pub opening times?) or elkse get it withdrawn from queue 5. Apologies for the short timescale here but I have only just fiound out. It seems extraordinary that once the hook has been promoted it can be subject to third-party alteration. thanks, --Smerus (talk) 23:50, 16 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Natalie.Desautels. Cas Liber just finished up a gracious and capable GA review on my behalf. Are you asking him to review Laucke's article? There is a GA review process and Laucke's article is in the queue and moving to the top. BlueMoonset will help us through the process too.
Cas Liber: Thank you for the enormous effort you put up with to get Planned Parenthood through the GA gauntlet. Cheers! Checkingfax {Talk} 20:20, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Natalie.Desautels, Checkingfax, I would respectfully suggest that now is not the best time for a GA review to start, given the current instability in the article. Unfortunately—and I didn't realize this when I put the nomination back in circulation earlier today—articles must be stable when a review commences. Indeed, one of the "quickfail" criteria is The article is not stable due to edit warring on the page. I don't think it's likely that the nomination will be picked up for review before several days have passed, which is a good thing, as it will give the article time to settle back into a stable editing environment. Cas Liber, even if you are inclined to take this on, please wait to do so. (If you do decide to make significant edits to the article, of course, that would preclude you from reviewing it.) Thank you. BlueMoonset (talk) 21:57, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Calostoma cinnabarinum[edit]

I was just reading the article on Calostoma cinnabarinum. In the last paragraph of the article, it says that the Otomi people in Mexico "reported that immature specimens of C. cinnabarinum, known locally as yemitas". Since part of that word looked familiar, I decided to look into it. I knew yema meant the yolk of an egg, so yemitas would mean "small egg-yolks". When I went to the Spanish Wikipedia and did a search for "yema", it led me to a substantial article that had nothing to do with egg-yolks. Apparently, a yema is a kind of bud at the end of tree or shrub branches. See [4]. This is a meaning I had not known about. Then I did a search for yema in the Spanish Wiktionary and found an entry containing not only several definitions but two photos, one of which is a plant bud and one a photo of egg yolks. See [5]. I think it's pretty clear that the Otomi were using a Spanish term, but I wonder whether they were thinking of the tree bud meaning or the egg yolk meaning. If you can figure it out, perhaps it would be interesting to provide a two-word definition right after yemitas (or link it).  – Corinne (talk) 02:56, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

DYK suggestion[edit]

Hi, in November 2014 you nominated an article I had expanded (Pedro de Atarés) and I wanted to suggest someone else. The instructions for nomination are quite complicated, so maybe you can take care of it if you think it's worth it. Ángela Ruiz Robles is the article. Today, the Google search main page (Spanish version at least) has a doodle that refers to her since she is considered a pioneer of the electronic book. She was born 121 years ago on this date. Regards, --Maragm (talk) 05:17, 28 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Maragm: sorry but it has to be expanded within a seven day period and by fivefold, or otherwise be a new article less that seven days old....interesting topic though. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 08:36, 28 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Back then, we talked about Reger's Requiem. I dream of improving that to FA by the centenary of his death in May, after yesterday's. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:54, 28 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, will take a look, but am no classical music expert. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 08:38, 28 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
FAC is now open, and it may be even more helpful to see what an "outsider" understands. I tried to follow your pre-FAC advice, by adding. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:44, 10 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

2016 GA Cup-Round 2[edit]

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016 GA Cup - Round 1

Greetings, GA Cup competitors!

Wednesday saw the end of Round 1. Sainsf took out Round 1 with an amazing score of 765. In second place, MPJ-DK earned an astounding 742 points, and in third place, FunkMonk received 610 points.

In Round 1, 206 reviews were completed, more than any other year! At the beginning of March, there were 595 outstanding nominations in the GAN queue; by the end of Round 1, there were 490. We continue to make a difference at GAN and throughout Wikipedia, something we should all be proud of. Thanks to all our competitors for helping to make the GA Cup a continued success, and for your part in helping other editors improve articles. We hope to see all remaining users fighting it out in Round 2 so we can lower the backlog as much as possible.

To qualify for the second round, you needed to make it into the top 16 of participants. Users were placed in 4 random pools of 4. To qualify for Round 3, the top 2 in each pool will progress, and there will also be one wildcard. This means that the participant who comes in 9th place (all pools combined) will also move on. Round 2 will start on April 1 at 0:00:01 UTC and end on April 28 at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Round 2 and the pools can be found here

Also, remember that a major rule change will go into effect starting on April 1, which marks the beginning of Round Two. Round 1 had an issue brought up in the rules, which we are correcting with this clarification. We believe that this change will make the competition more inherently fair. The new rule is: All reviews must give the nominator (or anyone else willing to improve the article) time to address the issues at hand, even if the article would qualify for what is usually called a "quick fail" in GA terms. To avoid further confusion, we have updated the scoring page, replacing the term "quick fail" with the term "fail without granting time for improvements". We expect all reviewers to put a review on hold for seven days in cases such as these as well, in order to apply the same standards to every competitor. The judges will strictly enforce this new rule.

Good luck and have fun!

Cheers from Figureskatingfan, 3family6, Jaguar, MrWooHoo, and Zwerg Nase.

To subscribe or unsubscribe to future GA Cup newsletter, please add or remove your name to our mailing list. If you are a participant still competing, you will be on the mailing list no matter what as this is the easiest way to communicate between all participants.

DYK Queue 1 needs replacement hook[edit]

Cas Liber, I'm afraid one of your hooks (on Welwitschiaceae) was removed from Queue 1, and since Fram doesn't tend to replace hooks he's removed (I have asked that he do so, but we're a little over four hours away from Queue 1 moving to the main page so he may not see the request) I'm hoping you can move a hook from prep to queue if it hasn't been done by the time you see this: I've suggested a candidate in my post to the relevant section (WT:DYK#Removed article spun off from older one from Queue1 (next hook on main page!)).

Ok, will go there. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 07:55, 30 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid Fram has a point about the article: according to DYK rules, the material in new articles must all of it be new, not taken from pre-existing articles. However, he has missed the part of the rules that says that if any material is copied from other articles, it must be 5x expanded. According to my calculations, 955 prose characters of text was copied; that means that the article would have to be 4775 prose characters long; it is a long way from the current 2142 prose characters, but if you would like to pursue the nomination further and expand the article that much in the next several days, I'd be willing to reopen the nomination for you. Please let me know. BlueMoonset (talk) 07:50, 30 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, just give me a few hours to look at the sources to see if expandable. I recall it being a bit difficult. I will let you know one way or the other then. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 07:55, 30 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Just happy to let it slide/be rejected. I'd have to ferret around for a stack of material and I am not confident I will find enough. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 08:00, 30 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, good to know. Sorry it didn't work out. BlueMoonset (talk) 14:35, 30 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Take the lead![edit]

You will remember the Take the lead! contest which was held in January, and the fact that I was among the winners. Since then I have heard nothing from Wikimedia UK, but all the other winners appear to have done so as I see a communication from WMUK on their talk pages around March 4th. Actually I did not see one for Doc James, but he has confirmed to me today that he has received his prize. I wonder what happened to mine? I did change my Wikipedia email address a few months ago but I doubt they would have sent anything direct to my old email account without checking with me first. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 17:09, 30 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm, weird. Send @Richard Nevell (WMUK): an email. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 23:29, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the ping. We had @Cwmhiraeth:'s email on record from a previous competition win, so I assumed it would be the same address; a lesson not to make assumptions. I've got Cwmhiraeth's email so we'll sort it out. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 10:49, 1 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your help, the matter is being resolved. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:45, 2 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Vaxxed[edit]

Since the majority of the edit warring is being done by established users, this page should either be fully protected or left unprotected. Problematic edits from unregistered users, who are the only ones now restricted from editing the page, aren't the issue. 108.16.82.233 (talk) 23:23, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Unless they are users editing as IPs to evade scrutiny or edit war. Making an account would be prudent in these situations as the subject discussions can become prolonged. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 23:24, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ok makes sense. Your perspective is different than mine because I know I'm not one of the other editors but you do not. I'll just leave it to the others then. 108.16.82.233 (talk) 23:43, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have an opinion on the content of the Vaxxed article? It seems to me to be 1-sided, biased, and subjective. No one seems to want to engage on the talk page. They just revert my edits which are an attempt increase the quality of the article.Conzar (talk) 00:53, 1 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

DYK queues empty[edit]

Cas Liber, in case you have time before 12:00 UTC (about five hours from now), it would be great if you could promote a prep or two to queue, so that we don't miss the next scheduled main page update. Thanks as always for doing so much heavy lifting. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:52, 2 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Overflow at your talk page (cont.)[edit]

Dear User:Casliber. Perhaps you already know that your user page User:Casliber is on overflow and has appeared at Category:Pages_where_template_include_size_is_exceeded. As a result, your subpage User:Casliber/DYK is not transcluded but only linked at your main page. Since I am really sure that you want to help us for emptying this maintenance category, I have replaced by User:Casliber/DYK in your user page. This amounts to acknowledge what is actually occurring. Obviously, any other help in our maintenance task would be welcome. Thanks in advance. Pldx1 (talk) 08:52, 2 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Pldx1: Yeah thanks for that, the page was done many moons ago by Phaedriel, now retired. Will look into some other designs. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 10:54, 2 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I wonder if you can help me here. A new editor just made a mess of the spelling of this page, and I have no idea how to revert it. The man's name was Nathan Straus (see 6), but is often misspelled Strauss. Any help you can provide to undo these edits would be appreciated. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 20:21, 2 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Bad timing. Just about to head out the door...just looked, is it just a case of spelling though? Surely just removing a bunch of 's's...? Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 20:25, 2 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

DYK overdue[edit]

Cas Liber, I realize the odds are that you've already gone to sleep, but in case you're still around we badly need a prep-to-queue promotion at DYK. The main page should have updated over three hours ago but wasn't because there's nothing in the queues. There are two preps filled, and that's it at the moment. If you see this, anything you can do would be appreciated. Many thanks. (I'm going to see if I can find someone else, but you're the first admin I've contacted.) GA mess fix request[edit]

Cas Liber, I'm hoping you can help me clean up a mess in the GA space: we've had a new editor, W5nio (186 edits, of which 28 have been deleted) doing drive-by approvals of GA nominations: three in eight minutes today, and a couple more along with other problematic GA-related edits, all in seven minutes, on April 6. Here's a link to the user's history. I have posted to this user's page noting the issues with his or her actions, and requesting that no further GA-related edits are done. However, a clean-up is still needed.

I was hoping you could delete the following three review pages, all created by W5nio, so we can get genuine reviewers in:

The New England Patriots review is especially problematic: the nominator has been waiting since last August(!) for a review, and the most recent reviewer—who never started the review after opening the page—had withdrawn and I'd requested a speedy delete that had taken over two days to be done … only to have this non-review (not a single word of comment!) further delay things. (This would be the oldest unreviewed nomination by four months, and thus bound to be taken up by a legitimate GA Cup competitor in a day or two, if it hadn't been scooped up by W5nio. It's why I noticed him in the first place.)

A basic chronology:

 • April 6, 18:32 to 18:39: W5nio attempts a drive-by nomination at Talk:Naruto (reverted soon thereafter); attempts to pass Talk:Toby Creek on its talk page even though Sainsf has it under review at Talk:Toby Creek/GA1 (this is reverted by someone else); creates Talk:Jet Airways/GA1 and says it's passed, though he doesn't do an actual "pass" step on the article talk page ("Includes everything about the airline the authors could get info of."); and adds a "GAR request" template to Talk:Eiffel Tower, though the article is not a GA and the last GA review was on January 1, 2014, so a reassessment is not appropriate
 • April 11, 15:49 to 15:57: W5nio creates Talk:North Carolina Highway 98/GA1 and says it's passed, though he doesn't do an actual "pass" step on the article talk page ("Has a great information, and has all the information you can get about the highway!"); then twice edits someone else's existing review, Talk:Book embedding/GA1, to add a "passing" template to that page (since reverted), and ends with creating Talk:New England Patriots/GA1 and saying it's passed, again without actually passing it or saying a single word about the article.

Please let me know whether you can delete these three pages for me. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 19:27, 11 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@BlueMoonset: all done and calibrated. All three articles are still unreviewed and in queue. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 21:08, 11 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much, Cas Liber. I've just adjusted the three talk pages accordingly, so they will all be available for new reviewers. Fingers crossed that they get picked up by experienced and prompt reviewers this time around, especially the poor New England Patriots article, which has had the most awful luck so far. WP policies consulting[edit]

Hello again. Thanks for always response my questions in a serious and polite way. I have a couple of questions about creating a page. I didn't have the number of answers I'd have liked in my WP:RFC here but the few state I could create a main page about the documentary, but I don't want to clash with the WP:NPP and give' em tons of explanations as it happened in Talk: Peyton Manning. I'm new creating WP pages so I don't know the more practical way to do it. Snow Rise was helping me but he told me he was very busy and he can't response right now, so I'll look for help anywhere else until he's able to answer. Thank you. Leo Bonilla (talk) 22:54, 15 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, what you do is make a page in your sandbox about the documentary. The critical step is to make sure you have at least two independent sources reviewing/mentioning/discussing the subject and you should be fine. Start at User:Leo Bonilla/sandbox
