Completion before deletion

Fifteen minutes into writing this article on Hans Kirschstein, my unsaved work was blown into cyberspace by a tag for speedy deletion.

I think I should at least be allowed to write the article before it is tagged for deletion. Especially since we are talking about a Pour le Merite winner here.

Georgejdorner (talk) 16:28, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

The speedy delete was a bit too speedy. To avoid this in the future, most people build new articles in a subpage of their user page (a personal sandbox, so to speak) and then copy the completed article to the true article name. See Wikipedia:User_page#How_do_I_create_a_user_subpage.3F. - Canglesea (talk) 19:41, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
I squawked too soon. The gentleman/gentleperson who did this removed the delete tag and marked it with an underconstruction tag. It seems the underconstruction tag should suffice to protect my efforts in the future.

DYK nomination of Friedrich Ritter von Röth

Hello! Your submission of Friedrich Ritter von Röth at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know!  Sandstein  08:03, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

There are additional concerns, mostly the presence of so many unformatted bare-url references. I would very much like to promote this hook but this is preventing me from doing so. - Dravecky (talk) 08:35, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Hello, Mr. Cang!

Please add a photo in Joe Son. I have failed so much to add photos in the article!

Congratulations. Well earned and richly deserved. Georgejdorner (talk) 00:58, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for rating this article. Could you please let me know what needs citations and where the grammar is faulty so I can fix these? I agree that the article is a stub and that it fails B2 and B3, but I'm hoping to get it to a standard where it meets B1 and B4. Thanks Nick-D (talk) 07:13, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

I revisited the article; the referencing and citations were fine. I usually do not assess the grammar of shorter articles under the assumption that additional text will be added. For me, grammar is usually the last thing in the B-Class assessment, as each new addition changes the grammar/flow of the article. I see no issues with accuracy. She's a neat little vessel. - Canglesea (talk) 02:29, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for that. Nick-D (talk) 07:27, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

DYK for Friedrich Ritter von Röth

Updated DYK query On 7 January, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Friedrich Ritter von Röth, which you recently nominated. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Request for assessment

Canglesea,

This time, it is Kurt Wusthoff.

Georgejdorner (talk) 01:01, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Canglesea,

I stumbled across an early article of mine and added inline citations and info box. I also did some judicious editing, and now offer for your delectation, Heinrich Kroll.

Georgejdorner (talk) 16:14, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Canglesea,

Today's candidate for assessment is Oskar Freiherr von Boenigk.

Georgejdorner (talk) 21:32, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Canglesea,

I am verging upon writing about little-known aces with so little info that I may not be able to turn out an actual article. Could you possibly advise me of a template to mark stubs?

Georgejdorner (talk) 12:00, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

George, you can add {{Mil-hist-stub}} or the more specific {{WWI-stub}} or {{Mil-bio-stub}} to the bottom of the article if you wish. - Canglesea (talk) 20:57, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Canglesea, good fellow,

A choice of stubs, yet. I am overwhelmed by your helpfulness.

At any rate, the articles I was worried about did work into something. I present for assessment, with some trepidation, Silvio Scaroni and William Ernest Staton. And did I already proffer Ronald Malcolm Fletcher and Max Naether? If not, might you assess them also?

Too many articles created, man. I am losing little items here...like track, and my mind lol.

Georgejdorner (talk) 06:02, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

I keep a list of everything I've done and planning to do on my user page; it's the only way to keep my wikisanity. - Canglesea (talk) 22:23, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
Um, my user page seems to have vanished. I do recall typing out a minimal statement when I first registered...and now I can't locate it. Georgejdorner (talk) 21:39, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
George, your user page is here. It currently redirects to your Talk page. You can edit it, replacing the REDIRECT with your information.
Hmm, I did the info routine once, and it seems to have disappeared. I actually would like to use it as a storage space for my "tool kit" of useful little thingies I have learned and want to use again. However, the disappearance of past whimsy is somewhat offputting.

Canglesea,

I am proposing two more aces for assessment, Olivier Freiherr von Beaulieu-Marconnay and Georg von Hantelmann. I suppose at some point, the assessments will decline to the level of stubs. At that point, I will quit pestering you and start marking my own stubs.

Also, you previously mentioned (somewhere) a procedure by which I might put my pumpkin-headed little orphan articles out for adoption, in hopes some kind editors/contributors would raise them up to Class A standards. Spacey me has misplaced the info, and now humbly begs a repeat.

Skilful

Please note that "skilful" is the usual British English spelling, and in any case where you "corrected" it in Robert Leith-Macgregor it was in a verbatim quote, and so should be left as in the source (possibly adding {{sic}} if there really is an error in the source). North Field & Central Field, Iwo Jima

From what I've learned there were actually 3 Japanese airfields on Iwo when the island was captured. Motoyama No. 1 (AKA Chidori, Central Field); Motoyama No. 2 (North Field) and Motoyama No. 3.

  1. 3 wasn't finished and it was turned into aircraft revetments and installations to support the other two strips on the island.
  1. 2 became the main airfield (North Field) on the island which the JSDF uses today. Used for B-29 emergency landings and for P-51 fighter escort missions for the bombers...
  1. 1 became Central Field and was essentially a 2d runway for B-29 emergency landings

http://www.pacificwrecks.com/provinces/japan_iwo_jima.html

The weak spot of the pacificwrecks database is that their unit assignment listings don't match what is in the USAF Historical Research Agency....

Take care... Bwmoll3 (talk) 19:02, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

Promotion of articles beyond B Class

Canglesea,

Due to my shortcomings in resources and abilities, I was looking for some forum where I might post Class B articles so that others could finish them up to A or GA status. I don't know anything about posting images in my articles; I lack the specifics of image copyrights and copywrongs to avoid trouble. Also, access to the printed sources that would make a B Class article impeccably accurate are difficult for me.

It is my hope that I could attract some more knowledgeable contributors to finish out the articles...someone like the incredibly astute researchers that haunt http://www.theaerodrome.com's forum. There are folks in there, for instance, who have copies of the original patrol reports of missions flown by pilots, and such minutiae.

I trained as an information analyst in the USAF, so I can piece articles together pretty well, but I seem to reach the end of my possibilities at B Class. I'm not complaining; just being a realist.

Aces deleted by Nazis

Sir Canglesea,

I have posted the following notice on the Talk page of the List of World War I flying aces. If you know of any other helpful place(s) to post it, please pass it along, with an encouragement for it to be further passed about if such should be helpful.

RESTORING JEWISH ACES

One of the Nazis' many offenses against the Jews was a concerted attempt to deny that German Jews served honorably and often bravely in the military of the German Empire in World War I. The names of German Jewish heroes were purged from official records. For an insight into this, you might read http://people.sinclair.edu/thomasmartin/knights/index2.htm.

One specific example I would like to cite is Fritz Beckhardt. He is listed in the Jewish knights website listed above, and mentioned in the forum of www.http://theaerodrome.com. I have him listed with a provisional victory total of 17, and am still researching him.

In the interests of NPOV, completeness, fairness, and accuracy, I feel it is incumbent upon us to restore these names to their rightful place in this history project. If anyone has any useful references, information, thoughts, tips, or hints, please post them to me.

Georgejdorner (talk) 23:30, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia as citation

Canglesea,

I once had a dialogue with Trevor MacInness which led me to believe that I could use Wikipedia in other languages as a source of info. I have done so sparingly, as a final resource to fill in gaps when I could find info nowhere else. Now I find that my citations of such cases are being deleted on grounds of unreliability--which, of course, leaves the facts cited open for deletion.

To find Wikipedia itself to be considered unreliable seems to me to be self-defeating. Am I doing all this research and crosschecking and citation to my writing just to produce something that can be arbitrarily disregarded? Or is there some reliability rule I am unaware of?

Georgejdorner (talk) 23:24, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Referencing and citation criterion

Hi Canglesea

Thanks for your ongoing work in assessing military aviation articles. I was just wondering what more I could have done in (for example) the Rumpler B.I article to meet the referencing and citation criterion? Feedback welcome! :) --Rlandmann (talk) 05:44, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Obviously thoroughly cited; I need more sleep. My bad. Cheers - Canglesea (talk) 01:04, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

No problem. Please don't think I was calling you on it; I was just genuinely looking for hints for improvement. Cheers --Rlandmann (talk) 10:13, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Ukkusissat

There seems to be a conflict with respect to IATA code (UKK) for Oskemen Airport and Ukkusissat Heliport (see talk page). The code for the latter was originally added to the Air Greenland article in the 2008-05-05T22:55:28 revision. I am having trouble referencing the current IATA code for the heliport. Could I ask for your assistance? --Algkalv (talk) 20:38, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

IATA codes are difficult to ascertain; there is no online reference for them because IATA wants to make money selling their code list. The most dependable online reference I know is the Great Circle Mapper, which shows UKK assigned to Oskemen Airport and no IATA code assigned to Ikkusissat Heliport. So, unless someone has the latest printed list from IATA, I would go with UKK at Oskemen Airport. Hope this helps. - Canglesea (talk) 20:57, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
Thank you kindly. I did as much. I am wondering what is the consequence of an airport not having an assigned IATA code − is it permissible, or is it simply a missing data point on the part of the general public? --Algkalv (talk) 21:33, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
There are many airports without IATA codes. The assignment is something for which IATA charges a fee. I don't know the relative cost/benefits of an IATA code assignment. - Canglesea (talk) 02:34, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi there, you tagged and assessed an article here: Talk:Adrian Francis Laws. I don't work in the military history area, whereas you do, so i thought I'd seek your comment. This article has multiple issues, including original research, potential NPOV, but mainly a question of notability. There are thousands of ex-service personnel with a record of this nature, and it is not clear to me why this article would meet notability criteria. Can you consider having a look at whether it should be a candidate for deletion? Cheers. hamiltonstone (talk) 02:15, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

I quickly scanned the article and noted that Laws had been honored with military decorations. This qualifies him as "notable" by Wikipedia standards, and thus not a candidate for deletion. Georgejdorner (talk) 04:46, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

Redirecting talk pages

Hi, thanks for all your work assessing articles. Just one point though, regarding your edit to Talk:Emanuele Filiberto, Duke d' Aosta. Quite a few projects like to keep track of redirects within their scope, and so redirecting talk pages (and thus removing project banners) is probably not something which should happen without discussion with each individual WikiProject. Of course, if MILHIST has no interest in them, then by all means remove it. But we at WPAFC, for example, like to record them as it gives some recognition to the work of our reviewers. Best wishes, — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 07:51, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Okay. Talk pages for redirects become confusing for us in MilHist. They lead to multiple assessments and multiple sets of task force tags for the same article. As you say, though, it is up to each WikiProject; I will leave others alone in the future. Cheers. - Canglesea (talk) 14:02, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Article in trouble

I have been trying to build a consensus on development of Forward Air Control. There is a Gordian knot of military terms that needs untangling: Forward air control (airborne); Forward air control (ground), a.k.a Joint Terminal Attack Controller; Air Liaison Officer. There is also a rush by writers with differing viewpoints (self included) to build the article, each to their own design. The result is becoming the classic definition of a camel; a horse designed by committee.

I do not wish to get into an edit war or some other kind of spitting contest. I do want this article to be clear, informative, and focused.

I believe a senior Wikipedist's intervention is needed, for the good of the work. Please intervene.

I'd just like to say thanks for re-assesing the Vladivostok Air article to a B-class level! I've been working on it for a long time and its kind of been my starting project in Wiki. Any advice for how to get it to a GA status or higher level?--76.121.4.143 (talk) 03:55, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

I recommend submitting the article for peer review within the Aviation community. From there you can take it through the A-Class or GA-Class review process. -Canglesea (talk) 14:56, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
Eh, this is a bit strange, but could you create it because I do not have an account and therefore I cannot create the page peer review....--76.121.4.143 (talk) 16:56, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
Done! I'll add my review and comments on the article this week. Cheers -Canglesea (talk) 23:51, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
Wow, thank you so much! =) Hopefully I've done a good job so it won't take very long.-- 76.121.4.143 (talk) 00:39, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

quick assessments!

Thanks on your quick assessment of Insitu. I hate to admit this as a mopholder, but how did you find the Insitu tagging so quickly? Do you watch a certain category for "needs assessment"? tedder (talk) 04:33, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

Yes, Backlog of Unassessed Military History articles. Cheers -Canglesea (talk) 04:37, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

FWiW, you got to it before I finished writing up all my sources! I've rewritten the differences between it and it's other engine, if you'd like to read through it and make sure your assessment stands. I don't think anything will change, but I figured I should let you know. -SidewinderX (talk) 12:30, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

Assessment guru

I found a list of Orders of Battle in which many are not assessed. I put templates on a couple but you might want to look at them when you have the chance. Someone didn't fill out a lot of the talk pages. List of orders of battle Auntieruth55 (talk) 02:51, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, I'll go through the list, eventually. -Canglesea (talk) 02:55, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

Airports in the Marshall Islands

Thanks for improving information on these airports. Just watch out for outdated info that databases may contain. For airport ownership, I just don't know if it's local or national. HkCaGu (talk) 18:08, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the warning. I am finding outdated information, even in some otherwise dependable sources like the FAA 5010 Master Records. If you have any dependable local sources, let me know. Cheers. -Canglesea (talk) 18:15, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Would you Mind?

Hey there, would you mind finishing a peer review that Born2Fly started for Vladivostok Air? Unfortunatley he is on a wikibreak, and I'd really like to get a start on improving the article further. Thanks!--76.121.4.143 (talk) 04:49, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

Done! Sorry for the delay. I hope you put it up for A-Class review. -Canglesea (talk) 17:19, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

I will definantly. Thanks again so much for the help! =) --76.121.4.143 (talk) 05:38, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
