And just to add to that boilerplate welcome: I'm sorry to say that I removed the name you added over at Marquette, Michigan#Notable people. The section is meant for individuals who have Wikipedia articles, hence the "notable" in the section header. Ed [talk] [OMT] 19:41, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Likely conflict of interest[edit]

Greetings, I monitor the Marquette, Michigan page and saw your edits and the reversion that Ed mentioned above. Judging by your username and the content you added to the article, I then looked at your contributions & edits. I noticed numerous edits to the article for Edward Breitung, among others and am assuming that you are indeed a family member. You may wish to review Wikipedia's policies & guidelines surrounding conflicts of interest prior to conducting further edits on that and other pages with related material, as there are sections which apply specifically to family members. Just an FYI & trying to help avoid issues going forward. Thanks! Picard's Facepalm (talk) 21:28, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings back to you, especially for the season. Thank you for your two replies. No, I wasn't aware of the conflicts of interest policy, and, based on this, in the future I will refrain from making further comments in regards to Edward Breitung Sr. I did first notice that the photo in Wikipedia was of Edward's son rather than him, and chose to correct that. And I noticed on the Marquette Michigan site that it listed Edward Sr. as a minister, which is incorrect (however, his father was indeed a minister in Germany). In regards to my being a family member, this has not been definitively proven, but I have gathered such a volume of circumstantial evidence that I strongly believe it to be the case. My intent was to eventually add both Edward Jr. and Nathan Kaufman to Wikipedia- both were, in my opinion, notable Marquette personalities- but given this feedback, I will refrain also from that endeavor. Best regards! Michael Nyquist (talk) 18:02, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Welcome to Wikipedia! I grew up not far from Marquette and went to college at NMU. Conflicts of interest are a bit of a thorny issue on Wikipedia, as you might imagine for a site that allows anyone to edit. It doesn't mean that you can't edit anything about people you are related to, but that you should be careful in doing so. For example, that could mean proposing edits on talk pages instead of making them yourself, ideally with reliable sources attached.
For a new article, I would recommend using the WP:Articles for creation process if you have a conflict of interest, but please also examine WP:Notability (people) to give them the best chance of being approved. (They might not be notable under Wikipedia's definition despite their place in Marquette's history.) Ed [talk] [OMT] 19:08, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Where did you grow up? I was born in Marquette and although the family moved to the Detroit area, I spent most summers in the UP. Went to GMI, and much later to Northern Arizona Univ. Mostly a Civil Engineer, working at various locations overseas. I tried to add Edward Breitung Jr., but the system is rather alien to me, and I got hung up. Oh well. I am not directly related to JR. The Breitungs were, in my opinion, incredibly interesting through three generations. All the best for 2024! Michael Nyquist (talk) 22:53, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
