Peer Review[edit]

Article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carter_G._Woodson

Revisions: Early Life & Education At the age of seventeen, Woodson followed his older brother Robert Henry to Huntington, West Virginia, where he hoped to attend Douglass High School, a secondary school for African Americans founded there.[1] Woodson was forced to work in the coal mines at Huntington, which left little time for pursuing an education. At the age of twenty in 1895, Woodson was finally able to enter Douglass High School full-time and received his diploma in 1897. From his graduation in 1897 until 1900, Woodson was employed as a teacher at a school in Winona, West Virginia. His career advanced further in 1900 when he was selected to become the principal of Douglass High School, the place where he had started his academic career. Between 1901 and 1903, Woodson took classes at Berea College in Kentucky, eventually earning his Bachelor Degree in Literature in 1903. From 1903 to 1907, Woodson served as a school supervisor in the Philippines, which had recently become an American territory.

When editing this section of the article, I did not make any major changes to the content, but rather focused on its appearance. I found in the course of my research that information surrounding Woodson's early life is not plentiful, so I instead chose to focus on just improving the presentation of information that was already known. For example, the original author frequently mentions towns without alluding to their location throughout the article, which I found confusing. I added in the locations of some of these towns and restructured sentences so that it presented the information in a smoother and much more clear way. Other than that, I believe the information to be as up to date as it can be considering what is known about his early life. When reviewing my edit, I ask that you mainly focus on making sure my changes do make sense and would improve the readability of the article. Also, I believe that I did the in-text citation correctly, but I am unsure so any help there would be appreciated.

Death and Legacy I believe that the first section of the second paragraph should be revised to be more clear. The original sentence is "The time that schools have set aside each year to focus on African-American history is Woodson's most visible legacy". I believe that this sentence can be rewritten to be a little smoother and include a little more information regarding what the time set aside is. My suggested revision would be "Woodson's most visible legacy is Black History Month, a continuing tradition that he laid the foundations for in February of 1926 with his Negro History Week".[2] Other than this minor change, I believe that the Death and Legacy section is well written.

@Bravestofbrave I can see what you mean about the article. It is rather fleshed out with most of the content about him already there, just lacking in overall reading ease. For the edit that you propose the only big thing that you might consider changing from your word choice in, "His career was to advance further in 1900..." When reading what you propose to change, the wording is a little "odd" but only in the sense that there is a chance it could be read incorrectly or misunderstood. This is mostly due to the inclusion of the word "was" since it can mess with the understanding of the tense of the sentence. Maybe say "His career advanced further in 1900..." On the topic of your in-text citations, it seems that it was correctly done so no need to worry about that. I really like how you decided to go about editing this page and the fact you were still able to find things to change about it since the content seems to already be mostly there. Your sources seem reliable as well. On the topic of the other content on Carter G. Woodson's page under the section "Death and Legacy", if you were wanting to add a little more to the page, perhaps you could elaborate on the presence of Black History Month within schools in American today. I say this because its noted as it being one of his legacies, which is still extremely important today. Other than that I really liked your edit, thanks so much for letting me read it! I also learned something new about a school I use to play basketball at here in West Virginia, because I wasn't aware it was named after him!
