Waterfall Gully[edit]

Hi Michael. Just wanted to thank you for the great work you've been doing on Adelaide-related articles, especially Waterfall Gully, which is without-a-doubt the best article on an Adelaide suburb. Keep up the good work! --Cyberjunkie | Talk 11:39, 29 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The Waterfall Gully article looks really good to me! If you're feeling game you could consider putting it up for featured article review, but I should warn you it's pretty tough (Summer Hill got rejected twice, but it was a better article for the experience, I think). -- All the best, Nickj (t) 07:55, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'll add another, great work on Waterfall Gully, on both getting to such a high quality and also getting featured! Oliyoung 06:14, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the comments to do with the article and the small copyedit! In your comments about the article, you suggested that the "Attractions" section be changed... do you want to give it a go? G 15:23, 28 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well...I would, but not knowing anything about the area I'm a little hesitant to do so because I might cut something important out without realizing it. My thinking is that rather than having separate sections for each individual attraction, it becomes "de-listed" by expanding it into one big section under ==Attractions== that encompasses everything in 3 or 4 longer paragraphs. (For example: "One of the most popular attractions in Waterfall Gully is foo, which blah blah blah. Foo is a blah blah, and it provides blah blah to the community. Nearby is bar, which blah blah"... you see what I'm thinking here?)
Also, noticed on your blog (yes, I'm nosy) that you're graduating...congratulations! :) Let me know if you need any more help; I'll be glad to give it a whirl. Take care -- PacknCanes | say something! 17:22, 28 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Adelaide Locator Map[edit]

Hi, I went through and created city locator maps for all of the Australian capitals. I have added the Adelaide one to the Article for you. Let me know if you need anything else. Martyman 03:57, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The IP Block[edit]

I have been unexpectedly blocked for some stupid reason! Absolutely annoyed beyond belief right now due to this error (reason given was: Almost nothing but vandalism since June 2004, but I haven't even been part of wikipedia for that long). This also means my beloved Waterfall Gully isn't going to get the attention she deserves in this trying time! I have edits to do!

To any Administrators who wish to unblock me:

My IP address is 219.90.185.165, however I run through a proxy server (202.6.138.35). The IP address 202.6.138.33 has been banned. For some reason, this affects me.

Could I suggest a notice on User:202.6.138.33 about this being part of Adam Internet's proxy server?

Cheers

I have posted a comment at the sysop's talk page User_talk:Lucky_6.9 Hopefully he will fix it up for you soon. Otherwise maybe contacting an admin by email might help you. --Martyman-(talk) 04:47, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thankyou for that! I've posted an email as well, hopefully I'll be alive and kicking ASAP. G 04:49, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Map[edit]

The second map is not working. Which map should I actually use? Is The first map is simple. Is there any other map that shows the suburb in relation to Adelaide? =Nichalp «Talk»= 13:05, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'll attempt them tomorrow, but I'm not a professional, so please don't expect stunning results. I'll be working on the last two links you sent me. =Nichalp «Talk»= 13:27, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
This is my first draft: Image:Waterfall-Gully-Road.svg. Remember, I'm not a professional! Let me know the location of Waterfall Gully, Leawood Gardens, Mount Osmond and any places you've used in the article. Use MS Paint to mark it, and I will correct it in the source. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 17:51, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You might be able to coax Martyman to help out with the map. He's fairly experienced at it, and has created maps for all the Canberra suburbs.--Cyberjunkie | Talk 02:47, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You're good at modifying maps too. You've not marked the suburb. I'll be modifying the CBD. I've used the MSN map as my reference. I'm sorry, its not 100% accurate, I really don't have the time to make it more accurate. (Basically, the roads are more curved and some lanes are absent.) I didn't use any font, I marked it as Sans, so it takes the default Sans font on a local machine. Its an SVG map, so there's no problem on resolution. And I've use Inkscape (windows) to draw the map. The beauty of SVG is that it allows "you" too to modify the image. I don't know about the colours, my monitor is old, and doesn't displays the colours correctly. =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:26, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
PS, I'll be deleting those derivative png images you've uploaded, unless you have any objection to me doing so. =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:33, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Delete any of the ones up to my final one, and if your final one is better, delete my final one too. - michaelg | talk 08:35, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I've modified my image according to your suggestions. Should I go ahead and delete: Image:Adel wgully map.png and Image:Wgullymap fixes.png? =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:25, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Oh sorry, its the same link as I've given you above: Image:Waterfall-Gully-Road.svg. Referesh your cache it nothing appears. (PS there's another red link on the page.) Sorry the maps is not very professional, I could have done a better job, but I don't have much time these days, so I focussed on functionality rather than accuracy. =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:35, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yarabee road is what's given in the MSN map. :) Would you like to try and emend the text? You'd need Inkscape to do this. Just righclick on the text on Image:Waterfall-Gully-Road.svg which says "16:49, October 30, 2005"; and save the file. Open it with inkscape. If its not possible for you to do it, I'll fix it for you tomorrow. =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:32, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like you guy's have got this under control. Let me know if you need any help with it. --Martyman-(talk) 09:35, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Glenunga International High School[edit]

Sorry for the shenanigans sir, but my office colleagues here saw me editing wikipedia and thought they would try and stuff me around. I did not write that comment about myself. I'm at the university of adelaide actually. I don't think that the comments could be particularly described as favourable anyway. Blnguyen 00:56, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, sorry. Actually a member of wikipedia? Nice. Cheers, - >>michaelg | talk 01:00, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry man, i was the one who 'vandalised' the glenunga page earlier. sorry if you dont think it is ok to have their, and that it is POV, but there is some major internal controversy within the school, and some problems between knight and DECS. i didnt mean for it to be biased, but most pages about corperations write about any controversy surrounding them, why should Glenunga high school be different? could you consider un-deleting it, perhaps changing to make it less POV. also sorry im not sure if my putting this here is correct, so sorry i am a bit of a newb with wiki.

It's just not relevant or suitable for an encylopedia. That's it. Create an account, I'll help you out if you do want to add constructive stuff to it. Cheers, - >>michaelg | talk 15:02, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Adelaide LGAs[edit]

Hi Michael. I have uploaded an initial version of a LGA map of Adelaide Image:Adelaide-LGA-grey-MJC.png. I have no idea what you want to use this for. Did you want it colour coded with a key, numbered with a key or multiple versions each highlighting a different LGA? Anyway hope your exams are goign well. --Martyman-(talk) 12:15, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Cool, well I might leave that as a task for tomorrow. I should be getting to bed already. --Martyman-(talk) 12:26, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I meant to ask if this was going to be included in an infobox. To suit an infobox I should make it wider (rather than taller) and have thicker outlines so that it looks acceptable at low resolutions. --Martyman-(talk) 09:26, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The ACT is one big governmental unit and Canberra itself doesn't have any government. So the Canberra wikiproject isn't going to be able to help you out too much. Though it isn't hard to design an infobox yourself based on teh on eyou are using at Waterfall Gully. I will get a map up in a couple of minutes to see what you think. --Martyman-(talk) 09:47, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
infobox map
Absolutely perfect. That's pretty much exactly how I would want it! Cheers, - >>michaelg | talk 10:00, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I will go ahead and upload the rest then. I will creat a maps page in my user area so you can find what I have called them. --Martyman-(talk) 10:04, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately I had to delete your additions. I understand your concerns of imbalance, which is why I changed the "Causes" section back to "Immediate cause." The deeper causes of the riots are discussed at the end, in the "Background" section. This is because the current event must first be described before we try to delve into speculating about what or who is causing these riots. Please try to incorporate your edits into the "BAckground" section. -- Zeno of Elea 02:09, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I give up. The article is a biased politically correct joke Cheers, - >>michaelg | talk 02:57, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I am in total agreement with you Michael, but we must not give up -- we must fight these far left lunatics before they totally destroy the west. Only by sticking together, and fighting them can we achieve victory. I used to be a moderate, but then saw what we are up against. It is really scary, as they are seemingly insane. keep up the good fight. Celtic1

Yes... Cheers, - >>michaelg | talk 03:36, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Are you OK?[edit]

Hi Michael. I see you've reported on the flooding in Waterfall Gully already. Are you directly affected yourself? Hope things are OK. --Scott Davis Talk 21:54, 7 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah I'm fine, my house is above water level, really above it, but houses a little bit down the road are absolutely screwed, and the road has been torn to bits... I'll upload some images soon Cheers, - >>michaelg | talk 01:28, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Michael. Since you've edited the article recently, I thought you might be interested in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Apartheid outside South Africa. Cheers. Jayjg (talk) 17:45, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

D'oh! Jayjg (talk) 16:34, 9 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Michael, thanks for further explaining your point. Having considered your logic, I agree that the article has major overlap with other articles, and the individual sections should probably be sent to the respective articles. Vvuppala 12:09, 10 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The Second IP Block[edit]

I am currently blocked by User:Hall Monitor because I am on the IP 202.6.138.33. Other people using that IP are vandalising wikipedia. Can I please be unblocked asap. Email has been sent, and any admins can check my contributions as further evidence that I am just an unlucky victim of someone else's stupidity.

Cheers, - >>michaelg | talk 05:45, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Image use from SA Tourism[edit]

I went online to SA Tourism and found out they have an image bank. I requested permission to use their photos and images for wikipedia (specifically the Adelaide article), and gave them details how images are to be used. Images are free to be used on wikipedia, regardless of whether it is a commerical organisation or not, per my application. They however, requested the following:

  • All images and maps supplied are to be used strictly for the positive promotion of South Australia as a tourism and travel destination.
  • All images and maps are protected by copyright to the South Australian Tourism Commission.
  • All images, maps, video footage, logos and editorial text remain the property of the SATC.
  • This must appear on all the pages of all images from SA Tourism:

The South Australian Tourism Commission releases materials solely for the purpose of positive promotion of South Australia as a tourism and travel destination.

I have been trying to find an Australian administrator who is online to get them to unblock you, but haven't been able to find one. There should be a list of these things somewhere. Minor Edits[edit]

Is it just me or have you change dyour username? Anyway I noticed that you mark a lot of your edits as minor edits. I used to do this myself a fair bit until I noticed someone pointing out that the Minor edit setting should only be used for "very minor edits" spelling, formatting etc. See: Wikipedia:Minor edit. Anyway hope you aren't gettign too upset with the constant IP bans. Have you looked into using some sort of reverse proxy? As an ANU staff member if I ever got IP banned I could use the ANU library reverse proxy to try to bypass an ipblock. Not sure if at actually works though, and have no desire to get blocked to find out. --Martyman-(talk) 05:28, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sydney riots Uh??[edit]

All my inserts are sourced , --CltFn 03:20, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

If you mean the intro paragraph , I believe it needs work . The nonsense about European-Australians is just a subtle way of implying that the Aussies are foreigners and I think my version is more accurate, in any case I doubt it will stand longer than a few minutes anyway .--CltFn 03:46, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Fine , lets see what happens.--CltFn 03:49, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Look they are lebanese Muslims , and the other side rioters are Australian whatever the label should be. But we should call both sides what they truly are. Seems like everyone is so afraid of calling a spade a spade. --CltFn 04:52, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

reason behind actions[edit]

Hi BTL,

Can you explain what you mean by this comment on the talk page?

Thanks, Ben Aveling 02:37, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion[edit]

Hiya Michael. Just a suggestion: when you're having a content dispute, it's better to work it out on the talk page than make reversions. Also, lest the situation become inflamed, you should tone your edit summaries down a tad. Accussing others of PoV-pushing (while often justified) can be construed as a personal attack. Happy editing, --cj | talk 02:55, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again Michael. Your comments about the place suggest you're somewhat agitated. Perhaps it'd be best if you backed off the 2005 Sydney race riots article for a day or two. Remember that as a current event, the article is likely to attract a lot of new and inexperienced editors, as well as more experienced editors trying to shape the article quickly. This obviously leads to tension, which I think you've found. Other than allowing a cooling-off period, it pays to assume good faith and excercise patience - as well as to choose your words carefully. I respect you as an editor, so I hope this article doesn't drive you away.--cj | talk 09:40, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sydney riots "History"[edit]

You need to calm down. The White victimhood issue is irrelevant to the history of violence in the area or on the beach. It is mentioned in numerous other sections. Again, that section is about the history of violence on that specific beach (Cronulla) and beach culture in general.

I fail to see how I'm disrepecting you or accusing you of anything. Rather, you're the one whose indirectly describing my edits as "crap".
Just playing by the rules, "mate."

reply[edit]

I didn't mean to be condescending. I'm sorry you perceived it that way. The comments were well intentioned. I see a lot of edit wars that could often easilly avoided. - Why waste time on edit wars? If you think the piece meant nothing then perhaps I failed at describing what I was trying to say. Have fun editing. --

Minor edits[edit]

Hi Mike,

  1. Those are not minor edits and should not be marked as such.
  2. The article should start with the riot - it's the big thing. Chronological order is much less important.

Regards, Ben Aveling 12:26, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

quoting possibly non-PC things[edit]

To quote you: they attacked other groups yes (greek, jew, cop) but were after people of "Middle Eastern appearance". Why the need for the quotes around "Middle Eastern appearance" at all? You aren't quoting anyone (or at least not citing them). I agree it should probably just be left general, but no unnecessary quoting please! DaveSymonds 12:35, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
