Influenza GA review[edit]

I think the points you raised have now been covered. Have another look and tell me what you think? Regards TimVickers 04:35, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Have added data on Talk:Influenza (edit | article | history | links | watch | logs) AzaToth 15:31, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your thorough review, I hope I have dealt with your concerns and your comments have considerably improved this article. TimVickers 04:15, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure I understand. Why do you say that it should be an SVG? Is there a policy to that effect, or do you mean that you think it would work better as an SVG than as a PNG? Waitak 02:11, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It seems like a nice system, but User:Zorglbot duplicated the last subpage and subpages seven days old would be automatically removed. I can't offhand think of a nice system to fix the second problem (except using a bot, which defeats the point). TimBentley (talk) 02:31, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Would you consider revisiting this discussion? Current opinions run 10-4 in favor of keeping the article and I think all the serious concerns have been addressed. Respectfully, Durova 20:34, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Templates for Deletion Automagic[edit]

It had to be undone. While I like automagic, it interferes with the bot that automatically transcludes each day's new entry, and archives those older than eight days. No harm done, though. Keep up the good work. RyanGerbil10(Упражнение В!) 00:36, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AzaToth. You reviewed the article about carbon nanotubes some days ago, and I think I've corrected the things you said needed to be fixed up for it to become a GA. No. AzaToth 19:46, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How much research did you do before proposing the article name change to Joan of Arc? The modern French version of her name isn't more accurate or authentic than the modern English version. The matter is covered in footnote 1 of the article and discussed in greater depth at Joan_of_Arc_facts_and_trivia#Name. Talk archives for the main article page have extensive discussions on which versions to present in the introduction, but per standard practice at Wikipedia I don't think anyone has proposed changing the article name. Durova 22:57, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was basing it on from what I felt was the more common name, and I did a quick survey on google, and got 2.3M result for "Joan of Arc" and 3.5M for "Jeanne d'Arc". And even if the english wikipedia is "English", I felt that the naming should be more consistent with it's roots than the anglotranslation. AzaToth 23:26, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
When I ran the same Google test on 25 August "Joan of Arc" came out ahead. See Talk:Joan_of_Arc#Name_change. It's a false assumption to suppose that "Jeanne d'Arc" is somehow more authentic. That's a modern form that was never used during her lifetime and remained virtually unknown in France for more than four centuries after her death. In comparison to original records it isn't particularly accurate. Durova 01:48, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your infobox on Talk:0.999...[edit]

The infobox you posted at the top of Talk:0.999... was entirely inappropriate. I've removed it. Next time, try not insulting the intelligence of those you disagree with. Supadawg (talk ·  contribs) 22:49, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please be more civil and assume good faith next time. AzaToth 23:40, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's interesting to see you request civility after reading what you posted on Talk:0.999.... To be incivil would be to call you names. Instead, all I did was say that you insulted everyone else's intelligence, which is me being civil, yet angry. Also, I did assume good faith: I knew you weren't vandalizing, you were just being rude. Supadawg (talk ·  contribs) 00:05, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Wasn't ment to be rude, it was ment to be a short help. AzaToth 00:07, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Then don't title it "0.999... for dummies". The fact that there's a book series with the same name doesn't mean people won't take it the wrong way. How about "Resolved User Questions" or something like that? Supadawg (talk ·  contribs) 00:34, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yea, that can be smarter. AzaToth 02:53, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AIDcur[edit]

Hi, AzaToth! Sorry to bother you, but I notice that you've been placing {{AIDcur}} at the top of articles. I just followed Wikipedia:Article Creation and Improvement Drive/Maintenance where it seems to state that the template should be placed in the article, and not on the talk page, but that can easly be changed :) AzaToth 02:52, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

November Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

Hey AzaToth, it might be just my computer, but the dates and times for all of the nominations are completely messed up.

This is what shows up for environmentalism:

43 votes, Nominated August 31, 2006; needs at least 44 votes by Error: invalid timeExpression error: unrecognised word "error"

When this is the template:

{{acid|start=September 1, 2006|votes=43}}

You appear to be the creator of this category. It contains Template:Acid and two clones of this template and nothing else. I was going to move these out to perhaps Category:Miscellaneous templates since having a category for this one template seems, uh, not particularly categorical. MathML[edit]

Thanks for your recent help with fixing some texvc bugs. I've a possibly large request you might be able to help with. There are a number of us in the mathematics community who are quite keen to get MathML output for equations. A standard for XML representation of mathematical equations.

The advantages of this are manifold, it could clean up the very messy display of mathematics in wikipedia, especially the differences in style of inline mathematical equations. It could reduce serverload as there would be less need for creating and fetching png images. Theres been quite a bit of work and the meta:Blahtex program has been written which can produce mathml output. However the process of actually getting it working on media wiki has stalled in [Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mathematics/Archive14|June]. Theres been a few related media wiki bugs submitted [2] [3].

As someone who seems to be conversant with texvc and mediawiki, you might be able to help this process along. --Salix alba (talk) 15:57, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have looked up BlahTeX and it seems promising, the only major problem with MathML is the font requirements for the end user. Also it need to be backward compatible, and for wikipedia's sake it means that it need to be able to read the old texvc images, as it would be practically impossible to re render them all (there are over one million math images cached). Also it need to be able to read all the current available tags (my error then I added a few). AzaToth 16:25, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes fonts is a problem we are waiting on the STIX Fonts project which is due to release a new set of fonts under a liberal licence real soon now. I'm probably thinking that mathml support would be an optional preference not set by default, at least to start with. It did not take too long for me to get a reasonable set of fonts installed in my browsers. I think backward compatibility is not a big problem as it can default to using texvc, a bit of smart plumbing might be necessary to make this work though. Considerable work did go into fixing all the tex problems a while back User:Pfafrich/Blahtex en.wikipedia fixup, and its something we could restart when there is some prospect of things being implemented. --Salix alba (talk) 18:03, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but I was really busy in the last few months because of a move. I just saw the deletion today. I used that template, and bnow my pages are garbaged. User page protection[edit]

Since it's not in the article namespace, userpages will be protected and may remain protected for long periods of time. CSS/HTML query[edit]

Hi Carl,
My revisiting Template:Nordic Council (plus my patchy CSS/HTML know-how) led me to wonder whether there's any easy CSS/HTML way to float something without the text or other elements beside it being affected. For example, I can imagine {{Nordic Council}}'s code being far simpler if it were possible to float:right the image but keep the text beside it centered with regard to the template's full width... Hope you see what I mean; any advice anytime gratefully received. (I tried some wandering around the internet for information, but to no avail.)  Yours, David Kernow (talk) 14:28, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, have changed the template, better now? AzaToth 15:16, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

TfD on {{wdefcon}}[edit]

Hello. I saw you nominate {{wdefcon}} for TfD, on the following basis:

I have got the impression that this template is redundant and obsolete

Could you please provide a better reasoning? I think you might want to visit Template talk:Wdefcon and verify your impression by reading the results of previous nominations - I hope you'll understand why people find the template useful. Also, saying it's redundant should in my opinion be accompanied with presenting an alternative that made it obsolete - otherwise, I'm afraid, your nomination is invalid and therefore prone to an early closure. Indeed. I've a question for you over there as a follow up. I really wonder why this code publishing thing is important to the point opposing this bot. Don't you believe that if the observable behavior of the bot is bad it will be shut down and blocked by other admins/stewards? I mean the code is rather trivial to write from the spec. If you distrust Dragons flight / admins / stewards up to this level, don't you think it would be easy for Dragons flight to publish one version of the code and run another one? I took back my comment and undid my revert. I guess you were already replying at that time. You are right on this one. Sorry. Jerry lavoie 17:47, 10 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well .. not completely. There was originally vandalism, but I saw this addition to AzaToth's userpage, and was surprised. I guess the article is now at the revision of this morning. For sure the vandalism was not AzaToth's, but the reversion was a mistake. Hope this settles all. See y'all around! Happy editing. --Dirk Beetstra T C 17:50, 10 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Topusertalk, or some such template[edit]

Thanks for pointing it out. I kinda screwed that one up... Clearly, the result should be to delete, so rather than post to WP:DRV, I simply changed the result after the fact, invoking WP:IAR. Again, thanks. Best regards, RyanGerbil10(Упражнение В!) 02:51, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, it was a rather strange TfD, as some people thought the template was the opposite. AzaToth 02:53, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why were my Burt Bacharach & Brian Wilson biographical additions deleted?[edit]

I spent quite a bit of time updating the Burt Bacharach and Brian Wilson biographical pages, and I was surprised and annoyed to see the pages reverted to a previous version, with a notation about "Vandalism."

Noting I said or wrote was opinion; it was 99% factual, and added to much of the information there. What I wrote was far from vandalism, and I object very strongly to that characterization.

As a published author myself, I'm surprised and bewildered at the way Wikipedia works. It seems to me that you people should try to read what's written first before summarily deleting it.

I initially believed I had a lot to contribute here, but I'm discouraged enough now that I'm going to avoid returning to the site. The concept of Wikipedia is a good one, but if it's being run by despots, I don't think it's something to which I can contribute. -The preceding unsigned comment was added by Marc Wielage (talk * contribs) 08:10, 13 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

I was a bit confused when I came across a {{pa}} warning on this user's page. He is an established user whose page was on my watchlist because I posted a message on his talk page a few days before and I forgot to take it off. My first instinct was to take it up with you because what I saw did not amount to a personal attack, rather an unfortunate customised vandal warning. However, when I looked closer, I found myself agreeing with you. He should know better with that amount of edits. I applaud you for your astuteness and apologise if I had any doubts even for a second. I don't agree with giving established users a standard template, even for personal attacks, but this is by the by. I have "adjusted" his next edit for the reasons given in the edit summary. Question[edit]

I've added a line at Template talk:Noadminbacklog, please take a look. - xaosflux Talk 05:20, 16 January 2007 (UTC) [reply]

What, not courteous?[edit]

Basic decency and commonsense suggests that when one nominates anything for deletion that you discuss or at least notify the originator about such. Particularly when the matter is somewhat complicated, and it is self evident you are trying to tear down a building by lifting out it's keystone, which is to say, you did not analyze it's role, nor understand the affect it has, nor that of your application of the {{cfd}} where you did... Note how I moved your cfd tagging--you were autocategorizing many important templates as being for deletion.
Granted the pirahna-like wanna-be admins chasing vandalisms, experiments, cruft and such on Afd have their reasons for not extending such elemental courtesys I would hope anyone around long enough to play around with templates seriously should know the difference, as the guidelines DO suggest it as the proper and preferred action for CFD, MFD, and TFD matters, and it WOULD be policy if you parse those discussions, except for such junk articles.
I'm not sure what part of this you were judging as broken, but the only problem it had was one of overrun on template expansion space. It did need an update though, so I thankyou for motivating me into that. Submit you need to analyze things better before incorrectly nominating something with the scope of this. I've spent a good solid man-month putting together the project proving scheme, and it's still a newborn. If you had questions about it, I take them from newbies all the time and am glad to field them from more experienced persons like yourself at any time, so ask before pulling triggers. I even take email... no extra charge.
I'm sorry it's not farther along, but you can see that I was off feeding the wife and kids almost all of last fall if you look at my contribs, save for an odd weekend moment here and there. Travel of that extent sucks, as did being away from the wikis. Please consider unnominating it. No one needs to waste time on this. Thanks. // FrankB 22:12, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry if I has been too harsh. I have tried to understand these templates, and when and where to use them, but have failed to found any real information about the usage and purpose. Also as standard among templates, if the template name contains "tmp" it's assumed it's a temporary template. Can you explain who is adding and maintaining these? is it some bot somewhere? is it a project that is in charge of it? AzaToth 22:20, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
More, I'm sorry I didn't notify you, I felt that because there wasn't any progress on the template, no linked project in charge, and seemingly not fully operational, I assumed it was in fact a failed test template. AzaToth 22:24, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Night At The Museum[edit]

As discussed on the talk page, it was stated that "After it is a plot summary, providing more detail about the film. According to Wikipedia:WikiProject Films/Style guidelines, plot summaries should be between 400 and 700 words which this one follows." The Night at the Museum article totals over 1000 words in the plot summary alone. My plans to shorten it to a reasonable length were agreed on it just about every paragraph on the talk page. I shortened it to the edits by Revision as of 14:35, January 20, 2007 (edit) 72.150.23.38 (Talk), since it was the appropriate length. Please explain your reasons more fully for reverting my edit to the article. ~Gatorgirl623~ 04:57, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback[edit]

Okay, I have used TwinkleFluff (tm) for a dozen or so reversions, and I did not detect any significant functionally defects. The tool rapidly performed its setup queries and submitted the reversion to the database in what felt like twice as fast as the modified popups script I am using. I have no specific metrics to support that, however. The popup box with the reverted user's talk page is a nice touch, and I was easily able to whitelist wikipedia in my popup blocker to take advantage of this feature. I would not have know it was there if you had not mentioned it. As a personal preference (a possible configurable option?), I usually go to the user's contribution list first to help me decide on the level and type of warning (i.e. was this a cheap first mistake, or is there a pattern of vandalism). Otherwise, I could see not glaring problems. Thanks for letting me kick it around! Kuru talk 05:58, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I can see that Frymaster has provided some level of metric for the speed of the script below!  :) Kuru talk 06:00, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

your crazy rollback script[edit]

on the rc patrol circuit tonight i got my pants handed to my by User:Kuru -- he beat me to just about every vandalism rollback no matter which tool i used. he credits his success to a rollback button you've written that loads faster, and i'm wondering if said script is freely available. -- frymaster 05:43, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, did you want User:AzaToth/VoA.js deleted? I found it in CAT:CSD, but I didn't see {{db-user}} on the page itself. If you want it gone, just lemme know. :) --Brad Beattie (talk) 06:59, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Math function patch[edit]

Hi,

I like to try your patch [5] on my wiki. Is there a link to the new versions of the two files? Or are people supposed to make the changes manually, or by running a script to apply the changes?--Patrick 11:37, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I made the changes to Expr.php manually, and provided the adapted file, see mw:Extension:ParserFunctions patch.--Patrick 02:28, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

Thanks for reverting my talk page. Bushcarrot (Talk·Desk) 19:54, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey AzaToth, just saw the above. Great work! I assume it rollsback the edit and opens the vandals talk like VoA's did/does?

Tell me, how easy/difficult would it be to create a version of the above that utilizes admin rollback for admins? I only ask as I find VoA's script incredibly helpful - however several weeks ago it stopped working for me and for the life of me I cant fix it (may have coincided with the intro of the undo function not sure). Thanks in advance!  Glen  00:32, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I havnt considered the admin rollback function, as I frankly don't know exacly how it works :). Mine is simlar to VoA's scripts, but's it's a total rewrite of code, and no sending querystrings all over the place. AzaToth 00:35, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
More, the admin rollback button is still available, so that function isn't overrided as of yet. AzaToth 00:35, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply. Hmmm, bummer. I'll give it a whirl. The advantage of admin rollback is that when we use it, it automatically blacklists the user so all future edits are listed in the VCN channels. Thanks anyway  Glen  00:40, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
hmm, I see, the problem with the admin rollback function, is that it can't be "changed". AzaToth 00:44, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That shouldn't count.[edit]

It's clear, as I stated, the article was brought up as an AFD strictly as a form of abuse. It's no different than a form of vandalism. Check his edit history; he's even fishing for votes. If you insist, I will stop, but it seems to be malicious. HalfShadow 02:26, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ok, it's a difficult problem. I would recommend putting it up on WP:ANI for input, let an admin decide. AzaToth 02:28, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It has been. That's why I heard of it. I'm not trying to cause trouble at all, my edit history can attest to that. I just saw this as being malicious and took steps against it. If I did anything incorrect, it was unintentional, I only wanted to see right done. HalfShadow 02:32, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great Fire of Smyrna[edit]

Instead of flouting your bias why dont you stop supporting Turkish propaganda and let other opinions be heard. What gives you the right to allow the Turkish user Mustafa to post three consecutive edits while deleting my previous additions?

Are you aware of the concept of litigation? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Tedblack (talkcontribs) 13:44, 22 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

I only saw that particular edit as a failed edit that misstacly removed too much data. It thus might be a content disspute, and some paranoia, I'll put it on ANI. AzaToth 13:47, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

User:AzaToth/VoA.js[edit]

I know that this is weird, but your subpage User:AzaToth/VoA.js showed up in Category:Articles for deletion, I think because it contains the string "General Note: Removing {{afd}} templates". This is a bit annoying, because that subpage of yours keeps showing up in various bot-generated reports. May I ask you to replace the above string with something like "General Note: Removing {{a" + "fd}} templates"? This should solve the problem (while not changing the js functions). Thanks. Tizio 16:12, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your command will be done! AzaToth 16:13, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
(EC)Now that I look better, there are actually three strings containing {{afd}} in that file. Changing all of them as I suggested should solve the problem. Tizio 16:15, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Twinkle glitch[edit]

Hi. I recently began using Twinkle (by recently I mean earlier today) and am really impressed with the ease of use. The only problem I've noticed is that if you add the "last" tab to the top of pages, it also shows up on special pages, which have no edit history to speak of. twinklefluff deserves a barnstar[edit]

fired up twinklefluff for the first time on this evening's rc patrol. in a word: wow. my highly-nonscientific feeling is that it's about 25%-40% faster than my modified popups. and since every second shaved off vandalism reverts means less people who see vandalized pages, here's a barnstar:

The RickK Anti-Vandalism Barnstar

Twinklefluff[edit]

I saw you were using it for vandal-fighting, and I decided to give it a shot. I think I added everything properly to my monobook.js, but it seems like it went a little screwy for me. When I go to the warning tabs (NOTE: I also have a DYK crediting tab next to it), it starts spazzing uncontrollably and I can't click any of the warn options. It's pretty weird. It might just be me, though. I tend to have problems with these scripts from time to time, and I fix them up by accident. Nishkid64 02:23, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sigh. I guess it will spazz like that only in 800x600 mode. I went to 1024x768 and it started working fine. In fact, I saw that there are more tabs lol. Nishkid64 02:27, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

for the record, i also run an extra tab (a p-cactions) with twinklefluff and have had zero bad behaviour. -- frymaster 02:30, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

twinklefluff and popup blocker[edit]

okay, i admit i turned the popup blocker on. basically, i'm extremely conservative with {{test}} tags. i realize that it's important to identify repeat vandals and all that, but i've come to the conclusion that a not insignficant portion of the blocks that eventually result from test tags aren't what i'd personally consider productive, notably blocks on shared ips (shutting down an entire highschool because of one bozo in the back row) or blocks that are punative rather than preventative. not to say that blocking isn't important or even that exteme blocking that borders on punative isn't sometimes necessary (the whole posse of on-wheels types, for instance), of course... just that in my experience by the time the test tags rack up enough or the aiv goes through, the class bell has rung or the simpsons has come on and the vandalism from that user is gone anyway. call me an optimist, i guess! -- frymaster 03:08, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

that I can understand, but remember that the vandal will be back then in an hour. Also, there are more than test templates, I'm mostly smacking other types of templates, not the exact test type. AzaToth 03:13, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that you removed rather new warnings. AzaToth 04:41, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Did you look at why it flagged it? Only because I included "?!?" in the edit summary because I questioned the article's claim: "Every singer in the business has taken something from Crosby. Every male singer has a Bing Crosby idiosyncrasy." The bot had no problem with the actual edit. 71.231.107.188 04:44, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And flagging carefully documented talk page archival as "vandalism" seems way over the top even if you found it "suspicious" or "improper". 71.231.107.188 04:45, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
