ok ok i will stop vandalising on one condition.....[edit]

you give me a bit of love and attention. I live alone you see and i get very bored and lonely. --79.72.81.16 23:28, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No conditions. You're not the only person to live alone, and everybody else is expected to behave appropriately. So are you. -- Arwel (talk) 23:36, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Arwel[edit]

Really sorry to read on your userpage that you lost your mother this year. Hope you're coping OK. I wanted to ask you something about Rear Admiral Neil Morisetti. Am I correct in thinking you knew him at University? If so could you please tell me what he studied? I am a very big fan of his. Many Thanks. --79.72.39.220 20:36, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

An admiral has a fan club? Yes, he was doing Environmental Studies, if I recall correctly, though I don't know what actual course units - I'd done a couple of ENV courses in my first year, though the main thrust of my degree was computing. -- Arwel (talk) 20:47, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

someone is using my IP adress to vandalise stuff and I get all the blame[edit]

hey, sorry to disturb you... i just got a message saying you will report me to telefonica for vandalism... thing is, ever since i created a wikipedia account, i havent used it to change the pages or anything.. is it possible that someone is using my IP adress to vandalise stuff? because i find wikipedia very useful, and i dont think its funny that someone is using my adress to put up the wrong information.

That warning was posted nearly a year and a half ago; since then your IP address has been blocked by administrators on seven different occasions for varying lengths of time. It may be that Telefonica cycles the IP address around between different subscribers, but if you create an account and then edit using that, then you won't attract edit blocks. -- Arwel (talk) 19:45, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bonjour avec SNCF![edit]

Hi Arwel. Regarding SNCF. Being a bilingual Canadian (je compends la français), I can tell you that midi means 'mid' or 'midday' or 'middle'. Hence the reason I used the word 'Central'. South of coarse is 'Sud'. Cheers mate. --RobNS 23:30, 14 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nevertheless, Rob, the whole of the south of France is referred to as "le Midi", which is where the railway got its name. Similarly the southern main station in Brussels is "Bruxelles-Midi/Brussel-Zuid". -- Arwel (talk) 23:37, 14 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't know that. But 'South' just doesn't seem right under that name Arwel. I still think 'Central' is correct. But I will go by your final choice. Cheers --RobNS 00:58, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re; your Last Edit to Chester[edit]

Hi and thank you for your kind help. Yes it can be a bit confusing when one has forgotten the way you do things on this great site. keep up the good work.Twinney12 (talk) 23:59, 17 November 2007 (UTC) What do I do about the map on the Newtown, Chester page? I was sent it by a member of Cheshire County Council planning department and told I 'could use it' - nothing more specific was said so I have put it up on Wiki. Is it OK here or do I need some other license? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Twinney12 (talkcontribs) 00:04, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's probably OK as it is Crown copyright and over 50 years since it was published, although the tag should be on the map's description page, not on the Newtown, Chester page. - Arwel (talk) 00:27, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cool - thanks for the info. Twinney12 (talk) 01:29, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Images on Welsh wici[edit]

Hello Arwel!

I need your help! hehe. Basically, I wish to transfer images on Lewis Valentine, D.J. Williams, and the image on Penyberth over to their English language articals.... but I do not understand the copyright reasons behind their use in Wicipedia. Can you help me with transfering them over? Then, I wish to use them in the History of Plaid Cymru artical amongst others. Dialch yn fwar (the extend of my Welsh at the moment!)Drachenfyre 11:50, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. OK, I've taken a look at all three pictures on cy:, however the reason I can see why they would not be acceptable on the English Wikipedia at the moment is because there's absolutely no copyright information about the pictures at all. Now, the Valentine and Williams photos are described as "tua 1936"; if copyright remained with the original photographer then the photographer would have had to have died not later than December 1936 for the pictures to be currently out of copyright (December 1937 to become out of copyright next month - it extends for "life + 70 years"), which would seem to be rather unlikely. Since the photos were published in "Coelcerth Rhyddid" which the image description says was published by Plaid Genedlaethol Cymru it is possible that the copyright actually belongs to Plaid Cymru now if the photos were produced "for hire" by the publishers of the pamphlet, in which case it might be possible to approach Plaid to see if they would be willing to release the photos (or possibly even the original photos for better quality) under a licence acceptable to Wikipedia, or even to release it into the public domain after all these years.
If it is possible to get the photos released acceptably, then it would be possible to upload them to Wikipedia Commons, which would make them available to all language versions of Wikipedia. -- Arwel (talk) 12:37, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
KK, Ill write to Plaid now. I've already gotten premission from them to use for Ieun Wyn Jones, so possibly I can get them to do so for these images too. Thank you very much!Drachenfyre 12:47, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oy! Ill have to redo them again! I did write to Plaid but have nto received any info, then when I was told political releases were free use I posted them. Now I will need to upload them seperatly then?! oy!Drachenfyre (talk) 07:55, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No, the image is OK where it is, it's just the image description which needs to have a "fair use rationale" added for each time that the image is used in an article. See the link I gave before! -- Arwel (talk) 08:11, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hehe, im geting a tad confused. What I did was try and go back to the image page and cut/paste Template:Non-free media rationale onto it with {{ }} and that places a box on there but then I do not know how to edit it to fill in the information. Can you direct me to an example that I may see? I may be able to learn it that way. Ill refrain from posting any more until I learn how to do this proper.Drachenfyre (talk) 19:24, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, take a look at the example at Image:1953ThreePence.jpeg. For the Lewis Valentine photo, you might want to have something like:

{{Non-free media rationale | Description = Lewis Valentine (1893-1986), Welsh politician, pastor, author, editor and Welsh language activist. | Source = Pamphlet "Coelcerth Rhyddid", published by [[Plaid Cymru|Plaid Cenedlaethol Cymru]] in 1936. | Article = Lewis Valentine | Portion = All | Resolution = Less than 300px in width | Purpose = To illustrate the subject | Replaceability = No, subject is deceased | other_information = }}

You will need to have similar entries with "Article = Welsh language", "Article = Plaid Cymru", "Article = Caernarfonshire", "Article = Penyberth", and "Article = History of Plaid Cymru", with appropriate changes to the "purpose" line to keep the bots happy. Hope this helps! -- Arwel (talk) 20:57, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

date range[edit]

Hi,

I cannot see a duration constraint in the section in wp:mosnum that says do not autoformat dates that are in date ranges. Can you clarify where this constraint is? Thanks. Lightmouse (talk) 19:39, 29 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The text in Wikipedia:MOSDATE#Other_date_ranges says:
Do not autoformat dates that are:
(inter alia) in date ranges (see below).
The examples given "below" are:
The autoformatting mechanism will not accept date ranges (December 13–17, 1951) or slashes (the night of 30/31 May), which must be input without using the function.
The example given is four days, which seems a reasonable definition of a date range. If your interpretation was accepted then we would not be able to autoformat birth and death dates at the beginning of biographical articles, which is preposterous and contrary to the practice of Wikipedia since autoformatting was created. The MOS is supposed to reflect the consensus on usage, not dictate it. The practice for the whole 5-6 years I've been editing has been to regard a "date range" as a short period within the same calendar month, or a few days over an adjacent pair of months, where the autoformatting system was acknowledged to be imperfect. --Arwel (talk) 20:04, 29 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, your use of the word 'defined' confused me. I usually use that word only when the definition is explicit. You inferred the constraint from the example. I understand your reasoning but the guidance currently forbids linking date ranges and contains no such constraint. If guidance is wrong, it should be changed. Ruthin page on English Wiki[edit]

Noswaith dda Arwel, (switching to Saesneg now, that's about as far as my Cymraeg goes). The Ruthin page doesn't seem to be displaying correctly at the moment - the main text doesn't start until just below the first infobox. I'm pretty sure it was dispaying ok until the 31 Dec edits. Can you fix? Thanks BrynAlyn (talk) 00:02, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I guess you're using Internet Explorer? I just tried reading it using IE, and I see what you mean - it displays OK in Firefox, Opera, and Safari. I'll just see if I there's something I can do to fix it, otherwise I'll have to comment out the infobox. -- Arwel (talk) 00:44, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I'm in IE. Looks ok without the infobox, but it would be nice to have the box there - didn't realise I was asking something tricky, sorry! —Preceding unsigned comment added by BrynAlyn (talkcontribs) 22:28, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently it's the way in which Internet ExploderExplorer reacts with the infobox template which causes the problem when there are images at the top of the page. I've moved them lower down, and it seems to have fixed the problem. -- Arwel (talk) 01:07, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, looks fine now BrynAlyn (talk) 13:13, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Change my username?[edit]

Is it possible for me to change my name? I would like to change my name. Is that possible? Can you please tell me whether it is possible or not to chang my name? Is there perhaps some wikipedia-page for people in need to change there username for a valid reason? I am new here, so I'd like some help and some directions. Shojaijekhi (talk) 20:28, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

See Wikipedia:Changing_username. Reviewing your recent edits, I would hesitate to rename your account myself, but that's for a bureaucrat to decide, if you go ahead with your request. -- Arwel (talk) 20:37, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I shall. Thanks for giving me these directions. My account was hecked yesterday, that is why I might have seemed to be acting strange. But I took care of that by changing my passwords this day as the imposter hadn't changed my account yet. I sincerely hope they will change the name of my account, I really do. Otherwise, I must take advantage of my "right to vanish". Shojaijekhi (talk) 20:42, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oops! Edit Conflict[edit]

On History of Plaid Cymru. Sorry, I am trying to see where the editing difference was. Were you concenred that it should be written as one-third? After rereading some sources, I was thinking a higher porprotion then that identified as 'white British', in the absence of a Welsh tickbox. I am looking also ... do you think they have made preperations for the next census yet?Drachenfyre (talk) 20:55, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The cited reference says "They show that one third of people in Wales prefers to describe themselves as British rather than Welsh." so it was incorrect to change the article to say that "most prefer to describe themselves as British". -- Arwel (talk) 19:54, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dafydd Glyn Jones[edit]

Hello!

I am glad you are still editing and reviewing History of Plaid Cymru. I am awaiting other books on Plaid Cymru for more sources and also to flesh out more sections of the artical.

I have a question, would you be able to create an artical on Dafydd Glyn Jones, he is a Welsh author and is on Welsh wikipedia... but as I do not understand Welsh yet can not myself translate the artical. Once it is translated it will link up with Jones reference on the His. of Plaid page.Drachenfyre (talk) 21:39, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done. I've done a translation for the Welsh Academy English-Welsh Dictionary while I was at it. -- Arwel (talk) 19:48, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
SWEET! Thank you very much for that.Drachenfyre (talk) 10:25, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

HMS Birkenhead[edit]

Hi I'm interested to hear why you think the Women and children first article is not relevant to the HMS Birkenhead (1845) as both articles contain explicit references to each other? Socrates2008 (Talk) 10:44, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Because the link which was removed was to the Van Halen album Women and Children First, and thus irrelevant. -- Arwel (talk) 17:51, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, OK - there's a name clash there with Women and children first - I'll fix it now, cheers! Socrates2008 (Talk) 11:15, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion for a title[edit]

Arwel, might you help me with a title for an artical? I have become interested in the issue of local housing in Welsh communities, mostly through the contraversies voiced by Simon Glyn. I wish to create an artical that explores the state of local housing in Wales, touching on housing prices and language, and of course holiday homes. But I am having difficulty thinking on a name for this artical. Do you have any suggestions?Drachenfyre (talk) 10:28, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Im thinking on simply 'Housing and Language in Wales' but dont know if this is appropriate. *ponders*Drachenfyre (talk) 11:44, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Images from Website[edit]

Hello Arwel!

I need guidence. There are images from the Plaid Cymru website that I was given permission to use on wikipedia. But I am uncertin if website pics... even in the media portion of the site... qualify as political content that is supposed to be free use here... simular to the pamphlets already used. Can you help determine if I can use these images from their website?Drachenfyre (talk) 23:20, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:FirstTrust100.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:FirstTrust100.jpg. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Terry Pratchett FA nomination[edit]

Terry Pratchett has been nominated for a featured article review. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. Please leave your comments and help us to return the article to featured quality. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, articles are moved onto the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Remove" the article from featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Reviewers' concerns are here.

Sent it to a 'review' by mistake! I'll submit it later today - I'll check all the links first, seems wise. --Matt Lewis (talk) 15:12, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There's not been much discussion I know, but I thought what the heck- I've nominated it, lets see what feedback they give. I'm interested in what they say about the sub articles. I think it can get, with their advice, to FA. --Matt Lewis (talk) 14:44, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Typo redirect 'August Storm'[edit]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on 'August Storm', by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because 'August Storm' is a redirect page resulting from an implausible typo (CSD R3).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting 'August Storm', please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. To see the user who deleted the page, click here CSDWarnBot (talk) 21:30, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've restored it. When I deleted it, the talk page rationale for hangon had not been created. Sorry about that. However, there's been a growing concern about redirects with quotations or apostrophes on WP:RFD, and when a redirect exists without the quotations or apostrophes, it's usually deleted. bibliomaniac15 21:51, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Help![edit]

Hi, Arwel. I hope you are well.

I'm hoping that as an administrator who has some knowledge of the topic can help sort out some trouble in the history of British film certificates article. Basically, an new editor to the article, Qst, has spent the last week completely rewriting the article transforming the established version to his own version, which is full of inaccuracies.

I have pointed out the inaccuracies to Qst on the talk page and reverted to the established version several times. Each time, Qst blindly reverts back to his version and claims that he will fix the article, but, despite being given several days, does not actually fix it (therefore leading to inaccurate information being left on Wikipedia).

He is now also, despite the polite warnings of another editor (Nick Cooper), breaking talk page rules by editing my own comments and deleting Nick Cooper's comments.

The most frustrating thing about all this is that the established version of the article was fine. All of the errors have been introduced by Qst, partially due to his reliance on an inaccurate source (a personal homepage, which he values above the official BBFC site). The only real problem with the established version was that it lacked references, so I added them, but he simply reverted it straight back to his inaccurate version.

Please see the revision history of the article and talk pages to see the full picture. Thank you advance if you have time to look at this. - Green Tentacle (talk) 22:42, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is not "my preferred version," thanks; rather, the expanded version. I'm an experienced editor, I know what I'm doing. I'm not breaking the talk page rules, by indenting on your comments using the {{done}} tag is not changing your comments in anyway, so I suggest you read Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines. The page is now fully protected, at my request. The source I use is not a personal homepage, it is a professional, photographic website. I'm sorry, Arwel that this 'dispute' has taken its cause on your talk page. :) Qst (talk) 22:54, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Unlike Qst, I am not going to hijack someone else's user page to argue my case, so I have replied to Qst's points on the talk page of the article.
Sorry about this, Arwel. I would still appreciate any help you can offer on the topic. - Green Tentacle (talk) 23:19, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am reviewing the situation, though it's a bit late to get heavily involved tonight, and I'm tied up tomorrow! A quick look at www.britishpictures.com leaves me rather concerned about its provenance. It does not look like a particularly authoritative site - starting a news item on the sites' main page with "My mate Nigel has a book out..." doesn't inspire confidence. Where this site disagrees with that of the BBFC itself, it would make sense to consider the BBFC site to be definitive. -- Arwel (talk) 23:50, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Welsh prohibition referenda[edit]

I see you have contributed information on the Welsh prohibition referenda to the page on Referenda in the UK. The article states Wales was all 'wet' by 1982, and that Dwyfor reverted to 'dry' from 1989 to 1996. This contradicts articles on the referenda in The Times, such as this one:

Forecasts for a wetter Wales - Licensing hours Times, The (London, England) - November 6, 1989 Author: Brain James

Wales has much to fear this week from the curse of its drinking classes. Which is not, as Oscar Wilde suggested, work. Nor even alcohol. It is apathy.

On Wednesday the principality faces another round of its peculiar ritual of referendums by which, every seven years, its electors may choose whether its public houses remain open or shut on Sundays . Since the system began in 1961 (to end 80 years of total Sabbath abstinence), the cause of the wets has been seen slowly to succeed.

After 1961 only eight county districts remained dry. After 1968 their number, mostly in the Nonconformist heartlands of the North and West, was down to five. After 1975, when electoral divisions replaced county boroughs as the defining mechanism, just six smaller dry patches remained. In 1982 four more constituencies leapt into the arms of Bacchus, leaving just Cardigan and Dwyfor as isolated areas of parched probity.

End Quote

.. Then Ceredigion went wet in 1989, and Dwyfor in 1996, according to The Times reports. I thought I would consult you as you had contributed to the original article, but if you think The Times is correct, I will amend the article accordingly. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Awnisbet1 (talkcontribs) 18:11, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That article was written years after the event, and does not say Wales was all 'wet' by 1982. I will seek clarification on the issue. Awnisbet1 (talk) 15:22, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Project FMF (talk) 19:33, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Could you translate?[edit]

I am looking for someone to translate the Hen Ogledd article from Welsh, and someone recommended I ask you. It has a lot more information, and I have almost no experience with the language, so I would appreciate it if you could try it for me. If not, I'll find someone else. ---G.T.N. Hello Arwel! You helped me transfer an image from Welsh wici to here, and I was wondering if you could do the same for an image from the Welsh wiki for Gruffydd ap Cynan. The image is of Gruffydd ap Cynan while in prision and I wish to use that on his bio page and on the Kingdom of Gwynedd page. Additionally, there is an image on the Llywelyn the Great page with his head shot I was hoping to get transfered. I can see that the publication is 1900, so belive that it is past any copyright issues and within the public free use. But can you also tell me who published it and what the caption may say in Welsh? Victoria Cross typo[edit]

Thank you for correcting the Michael typo. Why captial H for heroes? Cataloguing rule is sentence case with only the first letter of proper names in uppercase. Is there a different rule for Wikipedia? Anthony Staunton (talk) 13:45, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For book titles it's normal to capitalise all significant words in the title, see the amazon.co.uk page for Ashcroft's book, for example. -- Arwel (talk) 22:04, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of List of country codes on British diplomatic vehicle registration plates[edit]

I have nominated List of country codes on British diplomatic vehicle registration plates, an article you created, for deletion. I do not feel that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of country codes on British diplomatic vehicle registration plates. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? TreasuryTagtc 11:36, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Help!!![edit]

Help - Bureaucrats available on wicipedia but I can't figure out how to make them - can you do it? Deb (talk) 22:01, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, it's a while since I've been in that part of the system and the layout's changed! Let's see... go into "Tudalennau arbennig", go to the "Defnyddwyr a'u galluoedd" section and click "Gwnewch ddefnyddiwr cyffredin yn weinyddwr", enter the user name and reason for promotion, and make sure that "Gosod y fflag biwrocrat" is ticked before you click the "Gosod hawliau'r defnyddiwr" button. I think that should do it! :) -- Arwel (talk) 22:46, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use images are copyright violations.[edit]

Hi Arwel Parry. You have deleted the [[Image:200kroner.jpg]] because it's a "Blatant copyright violation". The Bank of Denmark has the copyright to all Danish bank notes so www.banknotes.com is just as blatant copyright violation as PZFUN who uploaded the image to Wikipedia. As far as I know it the fair use images on en.wikipedia is copyrighted images. You've discovered that PZFUN had downloaded images from www.banknotes.com and written "A scanning by PZFUN" as a source. I'll suggest that we/you reinsert Image:200kroner.jpg and write "www.banknotes.com" in the source. That will IMHO benefit Wikipedia, be legal and save us a lot of unnecessary work - Thank you. Regards, Necessary Evil (talk) 10:39, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've not been very active for a few days. The actual copyright on the banknote design belongs to the National Bank, and it is of course always possible to create another scan of the 200 Kr note and make a fair use claim. However, the scanner of an image also has copyrights, and in this case the scanner has objected to the image being on Wikipedia without the appropriate credit (and we have previously obviously had problems with this domain, which is why it is on the blacklist and cannot be directly linked to from MediaWiki). This, together with the incorrect origin "A scanning by PZFUN" when it was not, counts against the inclusion of this image on Wikipedia, which is why I'm not intending to restore it. -- Arwel (talk) 16:33, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I see, so uploading images from www.banknotes.com as non-free images even with www.banknotes.com as a source is not in order? --Regards, Necessary Evil (talk) 18:36, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think not, the owner of banknotes .com seems to be quite possessive of his images and it is probably less trouble all round if we got images from somewhere else! Regards, Arwel (talk) 18:42, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
M'kay - thank you for your time. --Regards, Necessary Evil (talk) 19:06, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bwlch Penbarras article[edit]

Hi Arwel, just like to say thanks for your rapid corrections & additions to the Bwlch Penbarras page I created only a few hours ago - for once I remembered to read and re-read the article before I saved it but still missed a few clangers! Plaid Cymru- HELP![edit]

DrFrench is targeting Plaid membership images for deletion, even though they are from Crown Copyright and free use for Encyclopedia uses. He does this without even posting flags and posting in discussion pages, which is the standard proceedure♦Drachenfyre♦·Talk 23:12, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Err, actually Crown Copyright does not mean that they are free to use - there are some differences from ordinary copyright in the UK, they effectively become public domain 50 years after publication rather than 70 years after the death of the person who took the images, but Wikipedia does discourage the use of CC images. If you want to keep them, you will need to make a non-free-use rationale for each time the image is used. -- Arwel (talk) 00:11, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

UEA[edit]

Hi there, as you have contributed a fair bit to University of East Anglia in the past I thought you might be interested to learn that I have just completed reworking a condensed version of the notable alumni section, adding refs where possible, and relocating the original list to it’s own page List of University of East Anglia alumni. I hope you approve! I also noticed on the UEA discussion page that you knew Neil Morisetti while at university. Unfortunately I could not find a ref for him being at UEA in my quick google search so if you are able to find one and would like to add it then that would be great! Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice[edit]

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Could you take a look at this? Cymry SF novels aren't thick upon the ground, but... --Orange Mike | Talk 20:30, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, Mike, the title's mis-spelled, so I've moved it to Wythnos yng Nghymru Fydd, but it's certainly a notable work as far as I'm concerned - BBC Radio Cymru thought enough of it to do a week of special programmes on the 50th anniversary of its publication (a 10-day week, in fact, 16-25 May 2007!). http://www.bbc.co.uk/cymru/radiocymru/safle/wythnos/. I see an article has also been created on cy Wikipedia. -- Arwel (talk) 20:48, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's why I deferred to your knowledge. The original article was very poorly written, and the author him/herself didn't seem to think the book notable. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:52, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Legal tender[edit]

Arwel, I was browsing through the 'sterling pound notes' article and I noticed alot of your edits. It seems that you have it correct on the issue of legal tender. It seems however that you were banging your head against a brick wall. You were working in a minefield of total confusion and pre-conceived ideas. It's all explained in the Whitaker's Almanac and it's exactly as you say. As a point of curiosity, the history of legal tender as regards paper money in the UK is very interesting. I'm a bit rusty now because it's about 15 years since I studied this topic. But am I right in saying that the legal tender status of Bank of England notes (in England and Wales only) of five pounds and upwards, goes back to some privilege act of 1833? Then in 1844, the other banks got their note issuing rights curtailed. By 1921, all these residuary rights had expired through mergers. The special case of the legal tender status of the one pound note and ten shilling note to all of the UK is a consequence of the first world war teasury note issue which was designed to replace the sovereigns and half sovereigns. In 1928 these notes were subsumed by the Bank of England. The Bank of England ten shilling note went in 1969 and the one pound note went in about 1985, leaving no legal tender paper money in Scotland or Northern Ireland. Not that legal tender is a necessary condition for accepting perfectly valid currency. Familiarity is the key to general acceptance. Have you ever tried passing a Falkland Island five pound note in London? It doesn't work, despite the parity and the Queen's head. You hit the unfamiliarity barrier, although they would almost certainly wrongly cite legal tender as being their reason for not accepting it. David Tombe (talk) 15:18, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

With Michael setting sail to cross the world, I'd like to update this article with some facts. I've already done a bit and there are plenty of news sources to keep me busy. Unfortunately, there's one thing I can't include. He received a Gold Blue Peter badge for his Atlantic crossing. Could you get your hands on Blue Peter Annual or some other publication I can use to verify this? (I don't have access to UK libraries) - Mgm|(talk) 13:55, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
