I'm back[edit]

Bhaia, I'm really sorry for not replying to your message here. I was extremely busy these days. You can understand my situation, a new city, new university and a new life. I had to go through some extremely bad days. But, now I am completely fine. Hopefully my net connection (at home) will be available in few days. Then I can be back with full speed and josh. Updated DYK query Did you know? was updated. On 2 January, 2008, a fact from the article Shomoyer Kotha, which you recently nominated, was featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Merger proposed. What do you think?[edit]

I have proposed that Mahfuz Anam be merged into The Daily Star (Bangladesh) and Chutir Dine be merged into Chutir Dine. We might have more formidable articles that way, instead of dispersed information spread over multiple articles. None of the articles have enough material to justify forked existence at the moment. When there is more information gathered, the merger can be undone to make space for expanded entries on Anam and the magazine. In the meantime, redirects would lead readers to the merged pages. What do you think? Aditya(talkcontribs) 15:59, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. The Prothom Alo merger is done. The other proposal remains as it was. Aditya(talkcontribs) 02:49, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A lot to tell[edit]

A lot has happened in the last one hour or so. Here goes:

  • Yes, the collaboration on Sundarbans, Cox's Bazar must begin now. Let's be bold and start on both. A few help will be needed to advertise the issue:
    • Updating the collaboration page to move Bangladesh Liberation War to past collaborations (a section in the bottom may be just right), while keeping Education in Bangladesh, probably, still a candidate as it is one of the core articles (another section in the middle of the page). Sundarbans and Cox's Bazar should be fetured as the current collaboration (a section at the top of the page). What do you think?
    • Updating the project banner to reflect the changes, as well as the notice board and the announcer. I couldn't figure out how to do that. There may be a need to make appropriate changes to talk page of the Liberation War, Sundarbans, Cox's Bazar and Education articles to make it complete.
    • The announcer will need a bit of content and code fix, though there is no immediacy. This one could be used as a brief version of the larger update list (well, I have moved it to the notice board... I hope I did right). There may be further changes to the notice board, but again there is no immediacy.
  • When you posted to the noticeboard, I was in the middle of a major rehash of the very noticeboard. I picked ideas of a few Wikiprojects, and posting to the talk page is anyways easier (it let's us use that + button on the top to make new sections). I also refactored a lot of posts (being bold at the moment). Please, check if I did right.
    • I had a "In use" notice while working, but probably you didn't notice it. I apologize in advance if I have been the reason for any inconvenience. I have refactored that post to the non-strategic discussion page and the collaboration talk. I hope it was alright.
    • In fact I am planning to spam the post to all active members of the project, as well as a few vigorous other users, old and new, who may take an interest (and also to the BanglaWiki YahooGroup, if it requires).

Currently my net-line is going very slow. But, still I'm ready to jump into the fray this very night. Thanks. Aditya(talkcontribs) 15:06, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As of now the biggest help would be to nominate both articles together for collaboration and update all the relevant pages to announce that (I hope I have been quite thorough in identifying those page, but you'd know better). It would be also helpful, if you spammed some of the active members of the project with the update. Thanks for the encouragement. I'll be out for sometime, and will start working on the articles when I get back. Aditya(talkcontribs) 03:19, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Let's Collaborate on Sunderbans and Cox's Bazar[edit]

Bhaia, that's a nice idea. In fact, these two articles should get our maximum priority. Cox's Bazar is now staying at the top while Sunderbans is at position two. In addition, I would like to propose that we (Bangladeshi Wikipedian) should start working on Ganges River article as well. It's current position is third! Three location, either fully or partially from Bangladesh!

I am planing to open a separate activity page on WikiProject Bangladesh so that we can discuss about these three articles and their improvement. We may propose a guide line for their structure, picture, citations etc. and try to work together on these three articles.

Please let me know. Cheers. -- Niaz(Talk • Contribs) 14:37, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cox's Bazar and Cox's Bazar District apparently are the same thing, and the articles are almost the same as well. May be we can incorporate "Cox's Bazar Town" into the District article, and make "Cox's Bazar" a redirect page (or, vice versa), or may be we can develop the District article to represent the bigger scene and leave the appropriate information on the Town to "Cox's Bazar", putting a link leading to "Cox's Bazar District" on it. What's your view? I have also posted on Talk:Cox's Bazar about this. Aditya(talkcontribs) 15:01, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have always felt that the town and district pages should be different. Unfortunately for the Cox's Bazar pages the same text is used for both the town and district pages. An effort should be made to separate them. I do not know much about the area and as such I am unable to put in my mite. Regards- P.K.Niyogi (talk) 15:56, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think Cox's Bazar town and Cox's Bazar District can be arranged in a single article. It won't create much difference. But, we should have a standalone article on Cox's Bazar Beach with massive information and a rich gallery. In addition I prefer to create a disambiguation page on Cox's Bazar to arrange them. -- Niaz(Talk • Contribs) 18:20, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Help. Arman, dear, can you solve the Cox's Bazar dillema once and for all? Whatever decision you take, I'll accept as final for now. Not too many editors are interested in solving the problem, and it's getting more complicated everyday. It's time to be bold, I guess. All I request is that we make a central page (Cox's Bazar? So be it... with links to all five articles you listed out), and fill that up. The rest of the titles of the ring of articles in the topic can develop later. Please, post to the merger discussion. Aditya(talkcontribs) 16:44, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Here is the logic that was evading you - "Right now, without enough materials, starting 5 articles don't make sense to me." Your amicable solution was - make Cox's Bazar "the article" - right? My tiny little problem was - Cox's Bazar is not just a beach and a tourist town. But, for the sake of development, I am quite willing to agree to you. Anyways, let's see what Ragib has to say on this. Aditya(talkcontribs) 04:14, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Forgot to add - the beach doesn't lie within the jurisdiction of Cox's Bazar, which, of course means the town. May be that was the missing part of the logic you were looking for. Aditya(talkcontribs) 04:34, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bhaia, I have created a page - New7Wonders of Nature Nominees from Bangladesh - to start a collaboration between Bangladeshi Wikipedians to work on three articles: Cox's Bazar, Sunderbans and Ganges River. Please visit the page and restructure it properly. I will get back here tomorrow again and will try to work massively. -- Niaz(Talk • Contribs) 18:49, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: BRCT[edit]

Marginally notable. It clears the notability criteria, just barely. Though I agree that much vanity put into the article. Apparently the editor has also put the name and description of the organization in as many places possible. The article on the founder looks like perfect merge material (doesn't fulfill the notability criteria as far as I can see). May be the article can stay, but a lot of cleaning up will definitely be needed. Aditya(talkcontribs) 08:57, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I do completely agree with you. Actually I didn't have enough good pictures and had to put something to show an extra curricular event. Besides, all other pix at EWU article are also not good at all - in terms of quality and photography as well. Recently Salman joined us here in WP. He is one of my junior bros at EWU and a talented photographer. I requested him to take some appropriate pictures of EWU and upload them to replace existing pix. Current semester of EWU has just started and hopefully by February he will have done with those stuff. Cheers. -- Niaz(Talk • Contribs) 12:56, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Deshipedian[edit]

Sorry that real life suddenly decided to whisk me away from the Wikipedia, temporarily. Though I do open the watchlist and look at it longingly, my activity is much compromised right now. I promise to format the Deshipedian 2008 page as far as I can in a day or two. And, I think I like the e-mail very much. I have just two observations - (1) may be it would be nice to have the names and userpage links of the judges panel on the Deshipedian right from the outset... there may be a project coordinator as well; and (2) may be you could include the number of Bangladesh related articles in the e-mail (about 2,000 now). For the coordinator and the second judge I propose you, and for the first judge I propose Ragib. And, for the media coverage Ragib may be able to talk to Munir (who made the Prothom Alo tech page news possible). Cheers. Aditya(talkcontribs) 12:56, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I do agree with the proposals of Aditya Bhaia. I will try my best to circulate this news to as many people as I can. In fact, nowadays Facebook became a craze and I have access (admin power) to some extremely giant groups such as University Students of Bangladesh or Wikipedia. Through them I will also convey this news to our young generation. In addition to these, I am planning to go for a large article on Star Campus. I will request Shahnoor Bhai for a cover page article. In past, I made a cover page in Star Campus and also Shahnoor Bhai requested me to made another which I couldn't as I had to leave Bangladesh at that time. I am being optimistic here :-D. I also sent an email to Mahdin (you may call him 2nd-in-command in Star Campus) informing this issue. Last week Mahdin showed his interest to join Wikipedia. He is a very active person and I am sure he can help us massively, being a part of us. And last but not the least, Salman is also interested to become an active wikipedian. He is a bit busy these days as he is going to be sent in China under UN funding on a youth project. He'll be back soon.
The nutshell of this post is, I am requesting each and every one to join WikiProject Bangladesh Army. At the end of the day this army will be ready to prepare and protect Bangladesh related articles here. And Deshipedian competition will be the first official step to form this army. Once again I am placing my promise - I will do my level best for this competition. Kind regards. -- Niaz(Talk • Contribs) 20:12, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This is fantastic! Looking forward to a nice collaborative effort here. Arman (Talk) 02:06, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Arman vaia, I have a question? Can I contribute to this program by distributing leaflet about this competition to my university (AIUB) students? If you permit me, I with few of my friends will do it. I will distribute the photocopy of the printed "draft email". I have already start sending this “draft email” to my friends & known person. Thanks.--Farsad (talk) 12:15, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Of course you can and should, and thank you very much for your interest. I'm not going to put you on any committee etc. as I want to keep the option for entering into the competition open for you. Arman (Talk) 01:53, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Arman, I read the email. Good work. Please include a link to List of Bangladesh-related topics. Another thing: from my experience about WP-related-advocacy emails ... people tend to get distracted when they see a long email. So, perhaps you can reduce the size of the mail to fit into two or three small paragraphs.

I am getting touch with Munir bhai to co-ordinate BDOSN's participation, and also about publicity. Tarif is now at NSU, so he can probably do some publicity there. BTW, Our photo campaign has received 300+ photos so far. --Ragib (talk) 02:50, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Just got your message, that's great idea. We can work on them soon. I'm trying to get some of my friends in this competition. Thanks for your nice effort on these projects.--NAHID 18:56, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Arman, dear, is it possible to clarify the "organizing committee" and the "jury panel" on the deshipedian page? Without naming any names at all, both propositions are currently looking pretty dodgy. Aditya(talkcontribs) 23:19, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Grameen Bank[edit]

The second paragraph in "Criticism", the entire "Rural telephone programme", the figures in "Regional Information" and the financial figures in the infobox still need to be sourced. I haven't read the entire article yet, but so far, those are the only issues clearly visible. Nishkid64 (talk) 23:22, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there Arman. WP policy discourages having separate criticism sections, so it should be integrated into the main body where the article discusses the Grameen banking model. The other thing that I noticed and have corrected partially is that the refs are not done in a consistent manner, expecially in the page numbering style, there are some with dots, no dots, P, p etc.

"On July 11, 2005 the Grameen Mutual Fund One, approved by the SEC of Bangladesh, went IPO" - what are SEC and IPO?
It's better to try and prosify lists if possible.
"although it should be noted that this opinion is likely influenced by Islamic banking principles, which forbid interest-bearing investments in accordance with Islamic Law" - after Hasina's comment -> If the Economist pundit said this then it should be attributed, else it has to be removed as personal defense by a supporter
Ref 21 by DC Barua is not actually independent since Mr Barua is one of the GB's managers. In general for the statistics, independent sources should be used, to eliminate possible false/self-promoting information by businesses/religious/political organisations etc. So in this case, independent statistics should be used for things like success rate, coverage rate because organisations are not trusted to give a non-inflated account of themselves. Of course, self-sourcing is allowed to state the press releases/POV/policy statements of the organisation.
In some places there is USD and others US$. Consistency in style needs to be checked.
"In a country in which few women may take out loans from large commercial banks, the fact that most (97%) loan recipients are women is a significant accomplishment." the second part is POV and needs to be attributed to some economist saying that the female involvement is notable.

I can't really say anything about the content since I don't know anything about financial matters at all. I think the consistency of style needs to be looked at. The article probably could/should be longer [I prefer detail in my writing] since the organisation won a Nobel Prize and is much discussed. Generally speaking the writing style is probably ok but could always be improved, especially if you want FA eventually. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 05:56, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Plagiarism by ScholarsBangladesh[edit]

ScholarsBangladesh is happily plagiarizing content from Wikipedia without mentioning the source at all. Check out [1] with Mahfuz Anam (seeing that you started the latter page, just compare the text!!).

I'm raising this issue because at any later time, people might claim a WP article to be copyvio from scholarsBangladesh. So, we need to keep their plagiarism in mind. --Ragib (talk) 08:26, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Raven02.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Raven02.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Speedy deletion of Template:User WP Bangladesh[edit]

A tag has been placed on Template:User WP Bangladesh requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{transclusionless}}</noinclude>).

Thanks. --MZMcBride (talk) 19:40, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comment. There's another template serving the same purpose {{User WikiProject Bangladesh}}. May be you'd like improve upon that older template. Use of a image of a Central Asian mosque didn't seem too appropriate to me. I am sure you'd have better ideas. Aditya(talkcontribs) 06:06, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks from Librarianpmolib[edit]

Dear editor arman Aziz. Thanks for your valuable information. I am trying to enrich that list. I have a booklet regarding the award. It is written in Bangla. So it is hard to me to speel properly. Ok. I will follow. Actually, in the gap of the time I can work. So it will take a lot of time. --Librarianpmolib (talk) 03:24, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Salute to your effort[edit]

The Islamic Barnstar
This is a salute to your Gladiatorial efforts in Mohammad article to remove that controversial picture even though it wasn't successful finally. I believe, your efforts and arguments must show a path-way in future when this debate will rise again. May Allah bless those disbelievers who intentionally protested this act so that they can realize the fact! -- Niaz(Talk • Contribs) 12:56, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wow! Thanks, but I am not sure I did any "Barnstar" worthy contribution here! As a matter of fact, in the past I intentionally kept myself away from Islam related topics on Wikipedia because I believed my religion is not a kind of subject on which I would like to be directed by a source which "any one can edit" especially in an environment where majority of the editors are non-muslim and often prejudiced with anti-islam bias. In this case (Muhammad images), however, I felt that a group of editors are bluntly violating all core principles of Wikipedia (WP:NOR, WP:VER and WP:NPOV) by moving away from the practice of almost all acceptable reliable 3rd party sources, and still they are trying to establish their wrong doing as an act of Wikipedia community. Hence, to be on true to my integrity of beliefe in Wikipedia principles as a member of the community, I had to speak up. And I've not given up yet. May be I'm not very active now-a-days due to real life priorities, but I will reengage my self in the debate. It is not a question of whether I succeed or fail, it is a question of expressing whether I am accepting this act as a member of wikipedia community. Arman (Talk) 02:00, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think you deserve this Barnstar because of your contribution in that particular debate in terms of smart dealing with Wikipedia policies to make other people understand a religious view point standing at a neutral platform. I noticed that you didn't mention any argument that can be accused for violating NPOV (though some of the editors, perhaps without reading your arguments properly, attacked you indicating that you are Islamic-biased), instead as an experienced wikipedian you showed them how things are going wrong there strictly staying at core WP policies.
  • Actually, I got a feeling like you and I never worked or even looked at any Islamic article on WP. But, this time I had to, and found a massive anti-Islam biased ill-activity there. You may notice that I compared your argumentative fight with Gladiator who used to fight with animals that don't care about rules and civilization. I found you experiencing similar picture in that debate. Once again salute to your efforts. -- Niaz(Talk • Contribs) 15:14, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bhaia, it would be really nice if you join this project. I know it's not our main concern but still I think, if we can at least guide other people with WP policies then those debate related articles will become slightly mature. Currently all the articles are mainly written by anonymous users and at some point violation of core policy will occur (or have already occurred in some articles). If we spend one or two hours time per month on them, it will be quite enough. Cheers. -- Niaz(Talk • Contribs) 16:09, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
