Welcome![edit]

Hello, AngelicBeaver, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Adam and I work with the Wiki Education Foundation; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. You may also want to check out the Teahouse, a community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to helping new users. Below are some resources to help you get started editing.

An article that you have been involved in editing—Intergenerational (Black Lives Matter Guiding Principal)—has been proposed for merging with another article. If you are interested, please participate in the merger discussion. Thank you. -- LuK3 (Talk) 00:45, 24 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Appropriateness of Articles Concern[edit]

You wrote: "I am a part of a group of two people attempting to create articles for each of the guiding principles, defining how the guiding principle is understood within the context of Black Lives Matter, as well as how it is or is not implemented within the movement. Edits or suggestions are welcome to improve the article." It appears that you are using Wikipedia to host a statement of the guiding principles of the Black Lives Matter movement. That isn't a proper use of Wikipedia, which is an encyclopedia that has articles on notable topics summarizing how reliable sources have reported on them, from a neutral point of view. See Wikipedia is not a web host. Please host these statements of principles to your own web site. Wikipedia can properly provide a link to your web site from the article on Black Lives Matter. I will be asking for the advice of other editors as to what Wikipedia should do with these non-neutral articles, but they are likely to be subject to deletion. Hello Robert. I appreciate your seeking advice on what do do with these. My goal was to describe each principle in terms of how they are actually thought about and used within the BLM movement. I tried not to make any statement that didn't come directly, or indirectly from a source, but I think that the nature of the movement itself makes defining these principles difficult. I sent Malik Shabazz a message asking his advice on this as well. Practically speaking, I would have loved to have had a place to go that defines the BLM principles far better than they are on the BLM website in terms of meaning and practical implementation. To me, many of them seem quite vague, and subject to misinterpretation. That's why I was trying to bring in the quotes and other sources, showing how they were spoken of and defined within the movement, as well as, on some articles, criticisms of their approach, or places where their principle, in reality, wasn't matching the actions of the whole (as in the case of Intergenerational or Transgender Affirming, where there is some difficulting in getting those implemented). Again, thanks for the feedback. This has certainly been a learning experience.
Is this part of an educational endeavor, or is it strictly you and one other person in Wikipedia? Robert McClenon (talk) 03:16, 24 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It is an educational endeavor. It's our assignment for the UTSA course "#BLACKLIVESMATTER". It's a group of two. I'm hoping our professor has mercy on our souls.AngelicBeaver (talk) 03:23, 24 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
So, well, I'll try to be nice, but to be clear, these will have to go. What you're doing is not part of the purpose of Wikipedia. I'll give you the option of moving them to a userspace sandbox before I go ahead and delete them, but one way or the other, these are not acceptable article subjects. Seraphimblade Talk to me 03:59, 24 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the consideration. You can delete them whenever you like. I have the content in my sandbox. I'm waiting for the professor to become aware of all this and advise me on how she wants us to proceed. As soon as I went through the trainings, I became very uncertain how this project could be completed successfully. I let the professor know my misgivings, but she seemed to think we could do it. Perhaps we simply misunderstood her direction, but given the feedback, I'm thinking that this was something of an impossible assignment, given the subject matter and the way in which it tends to be covered in the media. Again, thanks for the feedback.AngelicBeaver (talk) 04:12, 24 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think you're quite right in that there's a gap between what your assignment is asking for and what we accept in articles. I don't know all the details of what it was you were assigned, but you're certainly not the only one to run into issues. I've brought this to the attention of the education project to get some help with it. You're certainly also welcome to ask me any questions you may have, and if your instructor would like further details, she's welcome to contact me as well. User:Seraphimblade - I have created a bundled AFD nomination for three of them. If you can find a valid reason to delete them without going through a deletion discussion, that will end the deletion discussion. This is clearly one of these cases where the instructor doesn't seem to understand how Wikipedia works or what Wikipedia is. Robert McClenon (talk) 18:28, 24 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Diversity (Black Lives Matter Guiding Principle) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Diversity (Black Lives Matter Guiding Principle) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Robert McClenon (talk) 17:02, 24 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
