If I may be so bold as to ask something else... would it be feasible for NekoDaemon to occasionally look through a list of {{Categoryredirect}}s, and move any articles in the redirecting category, into the category it redirects to? For instance, such categories as American painters and United States painters come in redundant pairs and all articles should be in either, not spread arbitrarily among both. I'm uncertain and unclear how your bot got a bot flag without going through Wikipedia talk:Bots, but it is required that your bot gets approval at Wikipedia talk:Bots before running your bot before applying bot flag status. I'm just barely around. I occasionally make edits here and there, but I'm not very active anymore. My bots don't work anymore either (probably), and I don't have the time (or inclination really) to make it work.
But, I'm the kind of person who gets bored with stuff and then goes back to it eventually, so I might do that. But I'll never write another bot unless a bot friendly interface for wikimedia is written because they'd make changes to Wikimedia and then suddenly my bot didn't work anymore, and that got frustrating. Good evening. I have been working on a top-to-bottom rewrite of the Guide. My goals were, in order, to:
Reduce the size of the page
Remove the references to "voting" and return the tone to one of discussion
Clean up the order and flow
My current draft is 7 screens long (down from 13 screens in the "live" version. I think that I have kept all the relevant lessons, instructions and good advice. I did sacrifice some of what, in my opinion, were rare or secondary situations.
Before I post this for wider discussion, I wanted to ask the opinion of a few people like you who have been intimately involved with the existing process. When you have a minute, would you mind commenting on the draft? Did I cut too much? Have I changed the actual intent of any instruction? Do you consider this better, worse or neutral? I wrote a big paragraph on a peer review for your "Chinese Art" request. But when I looked, it didn't seem to be there. So just incase, I thought I'd put it on here as well, just to be safe:
Well I saw your request sitting there patiently, waiting for someone to look at it. I happily obliged. Well... My personal opinion is: The opening paragraph "Chinese art is art....etc", needs major reworking as it is both irrelevant in some places & confusing on the whole. It should either be deleted all together or start with a brief overview of the timeline of Chinese art or something similar. The content is very broad & covers a wide range of Chinese art. Some areas, such as performing Chinese arts, need a bit more depth & research to delve deeper into the subject. Some internal links need creating so that every red link is blue. I would also suggest some horizontal bars to separate the performing arts, sculpture, painting etc, areas more clearly. Although it may be a problem, I would like to see a couple more pictures towards the beginning, just to spice it up. But other than that, you could add a simple timeline to the begininning (E.G: ???? BC- This painter was born. ???? BC- This guy created this piece of art. ???? BC- This artist died. ???? BC- This city reached a golden age. ???? AD- This event influenced Chinese art.). Hey Beland. I'm beginning to feel that it necessary for a group of people who are willing to commit themselves to review bot proposals on the English Wikipedia. I really dislike that I seem to be the only one handing down the judgments on Wikipedia talk:Bots. Such a group or committee should be formed of technical and non-technical Wikipedians who can determine whether a bot's usefulness is harmless and useful. While bots are useful on the Wikipedia, I do feel that it is the responsibility of the bot owner to maintain and check what its bot is doing and whether their bot is doing the job correctly. Failure to do so, to me, violates the harmless and useful part. Non-technical members of such a community is necessary for the judgment of character of a bot owner and whether the bot owner is responsible enough to keep their bot well maintained. Well, I'll add Wikipedia talk:Bots to my "actively monitoring" list and try to check there more often and opine on others' proposals. Actually, I've been meaning to go through the proposals there and archive resolved ones. I added a link from "Things to watch" on Wikipedia:Maintenance, and a link from the "Get involved" section of the Community Portal. I also added the page itself to Category:Wikipedia proposals. Something could perhaps be added to WP:RFC. If you'd like to make a list of active participants on Wikipedia:Bots or Wikipedia:Cleaning department or whereever, fine by me, and feel free to add my name. But I've noticed that simply making a list of participants doesn't seem to keep people involved. People (including myself) tend to forget they've signed up as soon as something else catches their attention. And certainly adding a layer of bureaucracy that takes time to manage would only make the problem worse.
Personally, my watchlist is too big to monitor on anything but the timescale of months, but other people might be more active if they were encouraged to watchlist the page. Increased visibility may also help, by reminding participants that the page exists, and by attracting new participants. Occasionally posting on the Village Pump or filing RFCs for interesting bots may help do that. And certainly it's good of you to remind us bot operators on our personal talk pages of our civic duty to participate. 8) -- Beland 06:10, 11 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

A while back I recall you were involved in rewriting Star Trek. If completed I'm curious what you would have done to add that new rewrite to the main article. Any page smaller than 15 bytes turns out to be people testing edit power, or genuinely vandalisisng wikipedia. There are two legitamate cases of 15 bytes.

Well if you don't purge the cache you don't see the previous updates that have been made to the transcluded pages. So, for example this can cause "double" closures, where an editor wil "close" the AfD even though it has been already closed. I've had to correct several of these recently. I wouldn't know how to set the scope of it for Source Forge... And this would give us an advantage for several users to change bot code. It seems my code stays relatively static because no one else has the ability to really affect changes other than myself. You're right that the current day would always display a redlink to the next day, but if commenting it out would fix that, all the better. My only concern was that it would cause problems with the "long list" which lists a whole week's worth of AFD at once.
