Film plot - Rant[edit]

There is a tag used to tag film plot descriptions that are too long and detailed. But try to change a film's plot and it is usually reverted quickly due to an author who has a deep attachment to that film. He/she probably spent a lot of time writing the detailed and long plot description. They probably spent a lot of time telling people their thoughts on the film after describing it. People love to tell others about a film they enjoyed and it is no different on Wikipedia.

I really appreciate your work on the discography of Chet Atkins. Lots of work on your part, but very helpful for the thousands of Chet Atkins fans out there.

Thanks,

Hey! Thanks for helping with the Dave Van Ronk pages... I don't know much about the new albums, but put everything up about the ones I knew about! I'm glad someone else is interested... Luminifer (talk) 18:52, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Awesome, guess we'll both be doing what we can... I don't know how to get artwork up there yet. I think it might be worthwhile to have information about what's available on CD currently (or ever was!), but I can't figure out how to fit it well in the current format.. Maybe a section for "special CD releases"? ... not sure... I'm curious - are you a long time fan? I only (accidentally!) discovered him recently, then bought all I could on vinyl off ebay! Oscar etc...[edit]

Dates on Oscar Peterson LPs[edit]

Hey Airproofing. Looking at the Oscar Peterson discography, I think I'm seeing some incorrect release dates, but before I go editing thought I'd ask - is the "Year" there meant to be the year of recording, or the year of release?

For example, Something Warm and Put On a Happy Face are both listed as 1962, but I don't beleive they were released until 1966 or even 1967- what is the source of years used here? Jmeckman (talk) 14:15, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

According to WikiAlbums guidelines, it's supposed to be the date of release, not recording. Airproofing (talk) 21:51, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks - starting to update the list now - will take some time to work through Jmeckman (talk) 13:32, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The Everly Brothers[edit]

I see you recently wrote articles on each of the Everly Brothers' studio albums that were previously redlinks. Thank you very much for doing so - I had written a couple, but thank you for polishing off the rest.

All the best. Bobo. 03:47, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Leo Kottke, recent changes[edit]

Hi - A new-ish user made some wholesale additions and re-writes to the main Leo article. I just did some major cleanup work to better integrate the new material, but I think there may have been some factual errors introduced, particularly the sequence of events around the first albums and the move to Takoma. Can you take a look and see if you can corroborate what's there.

Also, this article could really use something about Kottke's influence and critical reception -- right now it's often just a list of album titles (which I intend to cut back on soon since there is already a discography). I'd be willing to work with you on further improvements. Jgm (talk) 02:46, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Whole Wheat Radio[edit]

In reference to the removal of the Whole Wheat Radio link from the Kris Delmhorst page, and the assumption that the site is commercial and not encyclopedic, I'm offering the discussion page as well as the archived discussion concerning Whole Wheat Radio links on independent singer-songwriter articles. Atuuschaaw (talk) 02:03, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your very quick response and understanding. I'm sure this issue will probably crop up from time to time but as long as everyone has your willingness to actually collaborate over the matter, it will work itself out I'm sure. I was hoping having the problem listed on the Spam talk page would bring some useful collaboration on the matter, but it just hasn't happened. Again, thanks for responding! Atuuschaaw (talk) 06:34, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jane Bowers![edit]

Hi there Air!

Happy New Year and my compliments on the tremendous work you're doing on the KT - so much more to say on that - two quick points -

a) the actual article Kingston Trio in IMHO inadequate. I did most of Bob Shane and though it needs a bit more sourcing, I'd like to see the Trio article go into at least as much detail.

b) I love your edits to the discography with the box structure and additional info like chart positions. A minor point - some of the albums listed under "Selected Compilations" aren't exactly so - aside from the "best ofs" and some Capitol re-issues, there are plenty of those albums that are mostly or completely original material not released with the original 25 or so albums on Capitol on Decca. More on that another time.

To the point at hand - unfortunately I know no more of Jane Bowers than you, and like you have always wondered. I clipped her obit in the LA Times (since lost) - but it had little info beyond what any Trio fan would know - Texas songwriter and all. I do know this - she was the writer of the songs under copyright to her and did as you note have some issues with Guard claiming co-writing credit for changing the songs slightly for royalty purposes. There IS sourcing for that - I just don't have time at the moment to find it. I corrected the assertion on the Dave Guard page that he "wrote" songs copyrighted by him - Dave was just arranging traditional tunes and again copyrighting for royalties, as I noted.

I can tell you two possible sources - Alan Shaw, who runs Rediscovermusic.com and FolkEra.com has extensive first hand knowledge of all things Kingston and I believe knew Bowers somewhat. Also, Florida publicist and longtime Trio friend Bill Bush is working on another comprehensive Kingston Trio book - the first being the 1986 Kingston Trio On Record, which you may have and which is a must for Trio fans.

I happen to know both Shaw and Bush well for about ten years now and will contact them to see what they know and where we might find out more.

BTW - I run a blog of of different video versions of KT songs called Comparative Video 101[1], all of which originated on the pretty popular KT message board Kingston Crossroads[2]. My blog piece on Bowers' "Remember The Alamo" is here [3] including my fairly crude Windows movie of "Remember the Alamo."

I also have two YouTube channels, one my own somewhat successful little folk group, related to KT- but more on that another time. Appreciation again for the wonderful things you've done here on Wiki. RegardsSensei48 (talk)! Jim Moran

Hi Airproofing!
Just got your note and forgot to tell you about her death - I clipped the obit from the LA Times and kept it somewhere, but it had less info than Old Ben's music. A word about that. "Old Ben" is Ben Blake, co-author of The Kingston Trio On Record with the abovementioned Allan Shaw. Shaw and Blake "met" each other in the 70s via connections between rare records dealers. They started a monthly newsletter called Kingston Korner, and much of the material in KTOR started there. Eventually, each started a company, Allan starting FolkEra/RediscoverMusic, and Ben doing an online site that you found. I'm sure that each of them and Bill Bush and Bob Shane know more - I just haven't had time to contact any of them but will soon.
BTW - if you haven't visited [4] and its message board [5] you'd have fun stopping by. The official site is also fun if you haven't been there in a while - [6].

I'm back on Peterson, I've tried to recover from my addiction, but I created this instead. I think we should hold off an infobox till we get the start of his recording career sorted out. KT discography[edit]

Hello Air -

I tried to add two recent releases from the current KT to the discography -the 2006 live concert CD On A Cold Winter's Night of the current Trio's holiday concert and the 2006 live CD with accompanying DVD Live! at the Historic Yuma Theater. Both are released as under "The Kingston Trio LLC" as a label.

These are real CDs and not vanity projects. The problem is that I can't manipulate the table correctly. I thought I knew a bit of HTML but every time I try a test run I screw something up. I'll give it another go later but thought if you had time you might add them correctly. Regards, Sensei48 (talk) 04:08, 13 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Air! Thanks! I was just about to write to you and mention what I was doing with the KT article - I'm sure I'm still going to need your help in formatting some of the information. I considered adding a table at the bottom of the different configurations with different members - but I haven't been successful yet at creating Wiki tables. Thanks again! Sensei48 (talk) 22:08, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And BTW - I made extensive use of your discography not only for information but for formatting album titles and links. Thanks! Sensei48 (talk) 22:12, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

GA

Is it ready to go to be assessed for GA status?Airproofing (talk) 04:50, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not quite yet, I think, as I understand the GA process. Two related tasks remain: 1) provide a correctly formatted list of all sources, and b) format the 91 notes according to WP:MOS, which differs considerably from most other formats. I'll try the source list first, and that may help me understand what looks to me to be the rather tedious process of formatting the footnote/refs, which I did logically and largely according to MLA. Now, you seem to know more of the ins and outs of Wiki procedures/formats than I do, so please let me know what you think. I believe that in terms of content and style the article may be ready. regards, Sensei48 (talk) 05:41, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I think we're ready to try for GA status. I added what I think is a complete source list in what I think is correct format. Also, I read extensively in the many, many Wiki pages about citing sources. The bottom line seems to be that a) they want verifiable sources, and b) they take no position on whether or not an editor should use their reference templates. Since these tend to be rather complex and at points counter-intuitive, I've maintained the modified MLA format that I've used throughout. The kindly guidelines also suggested that if there were problems with reference formatting, other editors would help.
Now, since I worked extensively on this, I believe that I cannot nominate it for GA. Additionally, I have to go back and check to see how an article is nominated for feature article status, because I think there's a possibility of that, too. But first things first - I'd be happy right now for GA. Thanks for the discography, the album articles (I may add some minor extra stuff to those), and all your help! regardsSensei48 (talk) 01:04, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Reference Edits

Thanks for doing the correct format consolidation edits on the KT refs. I had to change one early on - the Joel Whitburn book is the definitive source for Billboard charts, but I accessed it from two different websites and tried to correct the ref to reflect that while retaining the consolidation effect of your edits. I think I did it correctly - will try to do the same for some later refs as well.Sensei48 (talk) 19:02, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Air - Thanks for your help with the lead or lede on KT as per the GA review. It appears that SmackBot may have undone it? I have to confess to a bit of discouragement about the GA Review - first, because I am now incredibly busy at work as school begins and may not have enough time to do all that Moni asks in 10 days. Second - there are some peculiar comments there. The last sentence of the lead seems to me to be utterly clear and is in fact the focus of the whole article - I suppose I could expand the statement, but the Bruce Eder quote that opens "Influence" makes the case eloquently. Some of the citation needed tags are in fact answered in your discography and/or in the accompanying articles about the albums, and a citation for chart position of each single record as demanded seems overly-pedantic to me. I will also be sad to see the pictures go, because there just are not any non-free images available of a group that hit its peak 50 years ago this year. I'd ssay that I'd almost rather have a B class article that does what this does than the GA as the reviewer envisions, but I fear that in either event the pictures will go. How can they not be germane to the subject of the article? Thanks again, Sensei48 (talk) 00:09, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: fixed Whitburn ref - duplicate not required - are they all required?)
I'll have to look, but the initial problem was that I accessed Whitburn's information from two very different websites, neither of which included all of the chart points I wanted to make. Jim Sensei48 (talk) 22:17, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I Think It's Done ...and I hope so because it's 3 in the morning here (my usual time for this sort of thing). I removed all of the CN tags save the last one - I say why over on the GA review page. I'm stopping by here to ask you when you have a moment to be sure I did the new refs correctly. I think I did - I copied your Wiki template and adjusted it - this would be the refs for Sinatra and Cole at the end of "Peak Success."

I also had to make maybe half a dozen changes to some of what you'd done because the hyperlinks weren't pointing to the correct web pages. (They are now.) This is because of an understandable confusion - virtually all the really old articles on the KT (like Downbeat 1959 or WSJ 1982) are accessible on the web at only two places - Ken Laing's Kingston Trio Place [7] and Jerry Kergan's Kingston Trio Liner Notes [8]. Both sites are labynthine, and the pages with the articles have different URLs - it was those that I corrected, insofar as I could. "Liner Notes" is currently migrating to another server, so the Downbeat article can only be found if you know to look in the "Reading Library," which I noted.

Also, I had to remove the second hyperlink to the Cohen Festival book because p. 49 was accessible from GoogleBooks in July but is not now. So now that ref. now is to the book only with no URL attached. But it needs to be there - about 10 sources have half of the Morris quote about "tinselly showmen," but only Cohen on p.49 has the priceless second half - "except that it is mostly folk songs that they choose to vulgarize." Finally, the "No Depression Archives" that includes the Frank Proffitt and Billy Faier quotes seems to be down now because no pages are accessible, but I'm guessing that's a temporary problem.

Thanks for all your help and work - I noted months ago that you have a whole passel of discographies and articles that you work on, and your taking so much time to work on one has been a real boon. And as I note on GA review - you have the best KT discography currently available (which I hope we can use for the last CN tag). regards, Jim Sensei48 (talk) 10:25, 6 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

...and now I think it's really done as the last [citation needed] tag has been answered and removed. I will post a notice of this to Moni3 tomorrow evening if s/he does not respond before then - tomorrow is a week.Sensei48 (talk) 03:49, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Air/Bruce - On a different note, I wanted to thank you for your 11/13 nomination of the KT article to A status with the Roots Music folks. Not sure how that will go, but the thought is appreciated.
I had originally planned right after the GA designation to move toward and FA review because I thought that the article might well fit in with the occasional Wiki practice of featuring articles during the time period of important milestone anniversaries, and this week is the 50th anniversary of the KT having 4 albums in Billboard's Top ten in the same week, a genuinely unique accomplishment. Work and real life intervened, however, and I think the article still needs some polish and a little expansion before it's ready for FA. I did, however, add a sentence about the Billboard fact to the "era of peak success" section. Who knows? It might be worth a "did you know? on this date" citation. Thanks again! regards, Sensei48 (talk) 07:41, 1 December 2009 (UTC) Jim[reply]

KT FA Nomination[edit]

Hi Bruce - Thanks for the nomination for The Kingston Trio to FA status. If you look in on the discussion page, here [[9]] you'll see that (as I expected), the response is so far not positive. The process, like the GA process, has elements of the idiosyncratic and arbitrary. I've been content with GA status because of (previously) a lack of time to deal with the FA process. However - I now have a fair amount of time, and rather than withdrawing the nomination, I'm going to try to deal with the critiques as they arise - and have started to do so. Thanks again, and I'll keep you posted.Sensei48 (talk) 15:41, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again, Bruce: Don't know if you've seen it, but the Wikipedia:Featured_article_candidates/The_Kingston_Trio/archive1 has not generated any significant review interest. Two reviewers have buzzed by and opposed the article's advancement. Their comments have not been especially helpful, and their examination of the article was cursory compared to what I had been led to expect, and in fact to what other nominated articles receive (just scroll through the list here: [[10]]). Since there is normally a 2 week time frame within which to critique and advance an article, if more editors do not review it the article will be archived as a nominee. That would be a shame. I have requested an assessment at the WP:ROOTS project of which KT is a part, but the KT was never folk enough to interest real folk music buffs and not pop enough (as opposed to, say, the Everly Brothers) to generate much interest there. While I surely do not wish to violate the WP:CANVAS rules, I intend to request objective assessment from some editors I have worked with on history and music articles. I know you've done extensive work with discogs from the period. If you know of anyone who might be interested in giving the article a look, within the bounds noted above, and would be comfortable to ask them to read & assess, it might help the situation. I would be comfortable with any outcome, especially given the often erratic and unpredictable course of events here on Wikipedia, but I just don't want the nomination to die on the vine. The KT article is more thorough and balanced than many an article that has been promoted, and I believe that will be recognized if someone takes a look at it who knows anything about the music of the time.regards, Sensei48 (talk) 17:51, 19 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Merle Haggard albums[edit]

You are very correct. I was attempting to flag and tag them as he was creating them, but he is quick. Hard to keep up. Then when I started reading more into it, all the info he puts in about the "background" of the album only discusses what was happening in Merle Haggard's life at the time and not really anything about the album themselves in many cases. He just seems intent on continuing the way he's being doing it with trying to improve even with suggestions and offers of help. Can't help a person who doesn't want it. His writing is decent but, as you said, it borders many times on OR, but he has no clue or doesn't care about sourcing or basic Wikipedia formatting (especially when it comes to piped links). Thanks. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 08:03, 21 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Parnell and the Englishwoman[edit]

I stumbled into the Parnell and the Englishwoman article which you created, multiple times in the last year, and wondered where you got your information from which said it was an ITV (TV network) show, produced by Yorkshire Television.

Everytime I came across the article I'd go searching Google to find something to back that up, but the little I could find kept telling me that it's a BBC show, and that's because it is a BBC show.

Today I think I've finally found the answer (although I still don't know where Yorkshire Television fits into all this).

Parnell and the Englishwoman aka Parnell, was a drama produced by the BBC and Polymuse, and broadcast on BBC Two on the 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th January 1991. However it was also broadcast on RTÉ One on the 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st of January 1991.[1]

Charles Stewart Parnell - The Uncrowned King was a documentary produced by Araby Productions for Raidió Teilifís Éireann, and broadcast on RTÉ One on the 7th October 1991. However it was also broadcast on ITV (TV channel) on the 11th August 1994 with the title Charles Stewart Parnell.[2]

Normally I'm making corrections to ITV shows which have been incorrectly being credited as BBC shows, but this is one of the rare cases of the reverse.
