Where did you reference the changing of the numbers on the Bill Apiata article. This article has been referenced and the NZGov press pack lists him as being the 22nd New Zealand military personnel to be awarded the VC. I have amended the article accordingly. Thought i should let you know. Any questions can be left on my talk page or on the article talk page. Thanks Woodym555 11:57, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

David Pearce

I'm not sure what the reason was for this change. I'm going to revert, because the reference says "second", but if you can find a reference saying otherwise, then I'd be happy for it to change. Mark Chovain 09:27, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Edit summaries

Please take the time to write an edit summary for the chagnes you make. I couldn't initially see the reason for the deletion you did in the VC article - had you explained it properly I wouldn't have wasted time initially reverting you, and then reverting myself when I realised what the reason was. There is a setting in user prefernces which you can set to remind you to include an edit summary. Generally they don't have to be long, and often comething like "copyedit", "typo" etc is fine, but it is important, particularly when you reomve information from articles. David Underdown 09:59, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi. That section was set up to highlight the Australian vs the non-Australian awards; your recent edit has removed that information. Is there any particular reason why you removed that information? If not, do you mind if I put the non-Australian highlights back? (I agree that it looks tidier without all the "(Australia)" suffixes.) Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 06:03, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

And I would emphasise what David Underdown said above, particularly "had you explained it properly I wouldn't have wasted time" and "it is important, particularly when you remove information from articles". Pdfpdf (talk) 06:09, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

As for my changes on Major General Mark Evans honours and awards section, I did so, as you stated, to tidy the section up; make it more appeasing to the eye. I also removed the (Australia) prefixes as, due to the fact that Evans is an Australian general, I did not believe they needed to be there, it was obvious that they would more then likely be Australian medals,

Agreed.

and if not it would be stated otherwise.

Well, not necessarily. For example, the GSM is a British medal.

I would also like to add that I viewed a recent photograph of Major General Evans, wearing his ribbons,

Have you! (Do you have a URL to it please?) All of the photos I've seen are either head shots, or he's wearing "camo", and hence no ribbons.

but four of the decorations you have included Evans as holding were not present.

(I didn't put them there; I just reformatted.)

The Afghanistan Medal, Iraq Medal, Australian Defence Medal and the NATO ISAF Medal were not present among Evans' ribbons, although I will admit he is entitled to, and in the future more than likely will have obtained, the said medals

I can't really comment. I'll ask the person who put them there for his sources.
Thanks for the feedback and the information. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 08:58, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your additions. I was unable to find the sort of information you did. What was your source? Thanks, Pdfpdf (talk) 06:36, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi, my reference for the changes performed on Lieutenant General Hurley's page was the biography on Hurley contained at the Defence Leaders link on the Australian Defence Force website.

Ah ha. At last they have put up a bio for him. (That wasn't there when I created the page in March.) Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 08:58, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Edit summaries

Hi B.S. Why don't you use the edit summary field? Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 11:48, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

I guess you know there's a "switch" in the preferences that won't let you save an edit unless it has an edit summary?
(The default state is "off", but I have turned mine "on".) I'm not going to get evangelical, but I have to admit that I do "believe" in edit summaries. ;-) Pdfpdf (talk) 14:05, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi again,
Thanks for identifying the "missing ribbon" - I hadn't gotten around to it yet.
Where did you find Matt's full name?
Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 11:51, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

I'm not prepared to reveal all the cards up my sleave just yet. - lol!! Pdfpdf (talk) 13:05, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
I have to admit I'm a bit disappointed that you didn't ask me where I got my information from, and how I managed to get it up on WP before the ADF put it up on the Leaders page. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 13:05, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
No. It wasn't on that page at the time either.
I phoned his PA, and a Colonel(!) answered. I told him that although there was a bio for Head of Capability Systems on the Leaders page, (Matt's previous position, and now his subordinate), there was no bio for Matt. I asked where I could find a bio.
He replied, "We'll have to fix that. What's your email address?" Two minutes later I had a copy of a more comprehensive bio than that which has appeared on the Leaders page! Less than 24 hours later, there are bios and pictures where you'd expect them to be.
I guess that's why the guy who answered the phone is a Colonel, and I'm not! Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 13:31, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

it should have been posted up there long ago

Agreed!!!! Pdfpdf (talk) 13:47, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

ADF Leaders page

(This is a worry.) I had the same thought!
One answer might be that there's only one WOFF of the RAAF, but each Regiment has an RSM??
And what about the RAN?
Pdfpdf (talk) 13:56, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

And then, it might not be the answer.
So we return to: (This is a worry.) I had the same thought! Pdfpdf (talk) 14:13, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Cosgrove

Official portrait 2004 - There's a ribbon on the bottom r.h. corner I can't identify. Can you identify it? Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 13:06, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-heroes/cosgrove.htm says it is Tong-il medal from the Republic of Korea. It seems the colour match on Image:Tong-il Medal (South Korea) ribbon.png is not very good ... Pdfpdf (talk) 13:48, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Ta.
(BTW, when you say "I've seen a photo ... ", do you think you include the URL?)
Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 02:57, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

(Am I the only person with similar interests to you?)
(And you're still not using the edit summary ... )

Hi B.S.
two of which were honorary - Perhaps a footnote to say which two? (Not everyone is as familiar with the subject matter as you and I.)
Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 10:16, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

(P.S. Thanks for populating the "bio" and "photo" columns - I was putting that off! Pdfpdf (talk) 10:16, 30 April 2008 (UTC))

and at the time I was a little lazy - Lol!! Yes, I understand that point-of-view! (Rather too well, I'm afraid.) Pdfpdf (talk) 10:48, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

edit summaries redux

As for the edit summaries, ... I am/was unsure of what I should put, ...
a) Something informative about WHY you did it. (Generally, what you did is obvious. Why you did it may not be.)
b) If possible, something vaguely amusing [and informative about WHY you did it].
Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 12:37, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Why?

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Chief_of_the_Defence_Force_%28Australia%29&diff=next&oldid=211426913 Pdfpdf (talk) 10:00, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

and in my mind it does look tidier
To be un-necessarily pedantic (but then it wouldn't be amusing), and to un-necessarily push a point (well, I have to have some ammunition, don't I), I could say things about using the edit summary. But that would be un-necessary, wouldn't it.
On another tack, it sounds like, like me, you started doing something, and kept going ...
Enjoy yourself. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 12:49, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

so perhaps it would be best if the Honours and Awards section was disbanded for the moment, until images of the ribbons can be obtained, so as that section doesn't look a mess?
Several answers. Two at the moment:

  • I think I can have those ribbons on WP fairly quickly; give me a chance to look around.
  • What does "disbanded for the moment" mean?

Pdfpdf (talk) 13:40, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

"If". Pdfpdf (talk) 13:45, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

I can't find a picture of him wearing 8 ribbons (only 6 ribbons, or 8 medals). I gather you did? What's the URL please? Pdfpdf (talk) 10:16, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

How sad. I found those pictures, and although the medals are (very) clear, I couldn't distinguish the ribbons. (Don't laugh, one day you too will need to wear reading glasses.) Thanks, Pdfpdf (talk) 10:34, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, but I must indulge myself with a little chuckle at the moment. I do wear reading glasses, and have since I was in the 5th Grade; so for nearly six years now. Lol. Abraham, B.S. (talk) 10:41, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
Ah! I see. (metaphorically) So you're a more experienced user than I am. That must explain it! Pdfpdf (talk) 10:48, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
Although, I must say, I wasn't wearing my glasses when I viewed the photos containing Rear Admiral Thomas, yet I could still distinguished the ribbons quite easily, lol. Regards, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 10:57, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
So that was my mistake - I was wearing my glasses. Perhaps I should have taken them off? Pdfpdf (talk) 11:07, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

They finally updated his bio and position here. Appointed DCN on 6 June 2008. PalawanOz (talk) 06:40, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

ADM

Good evening young sir! I gather you've found a source of information about ADM awards? Pdfpdf (talk) 09:43, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
(Your addition of ADM to Barrie and Hurley - I haven't seen any pictures of them wearing the ADM, or seen any info about them receiving the ADM.) Pdfpdf (talk) 13:01, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

ADF office succession boxes

Hi mate. I notice you've put rank in this box in Scherger's article. My understanding was that rank is not part of the standard for these things. That said, I don't have a strong opinion on the matter either way, I'd just like to see consistency. Might be an idea for you to check on some other Commonwealth military bios or at the MILHIST project to confirm the standard before continuing to apply it, if you haven't already done so. If it appears to be the way to go, then by all means add it in to the other RAAF bios before and after Scherg. Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 23:10, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I thought we were just talking rank and now decorations are being added as well. I think you're on the wrong track here. Rank is one thing but the post-nominals are starting to clog up up what were once neat, simple boxes. I've checked the templates s-mil and s-start and in no example is rank used, much less post-nominals. I suggest reversing this process or at the very least calling a halt and discussing at MILHIST before continuing. Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 07:10, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
Ah, well, if I was going to follow examples I'd go for recent Featured Articles like William Tecumseh Sherman, Andrew Cunningham and, dare I say it, George Jones before your recent change, rather than the current ADF leaders... Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 11:53, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi Abraham, for some reason this article has been nominated for deletion. The discussion is at: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Current senior Australian Defence Organisation personnel Nick Dowling (talk) 06:38, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi Bryce, I've just created a page for Ash Power. Would you like to see what you can add? So far I haven't been able to find a bio for him. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 01:31, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

P.S. On your user page: " ... I live, no to mention ... " Pdfpdf (talk) 01:31, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks.
BTW: Would you mind looking at the 2007-04-26 photo and seeing if you can identify the 3 medals that I didn't? I imagine the fourth & fifth are Afghanistan and INTERFET, but I can't work out the sixth, and it has a couple of bars on it too. (My guess is it might be Bouganville related, but because it's before his ADM, I'm not sure.) Also, I can't spot a Defence Force Service Medal. Pdfpdf (talk) 04:14, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
Again, thank you.
(I'm beginning to wonder about my pattern recognition abilities - You have to be correct, but I still wouldn't pick it as the DFSM, even though I know that's what it must be!)

John Charles Hoad

Thanks for your recent edit to the article about John Charles Hoad. Earlier, I left a message here which was poorly written. Please accept my apology for having caused any unnecessary confusion. Obviously, I needed to spend a bit more time thinking things through before posting a note here. I'll try to write more clearly in future. No worries. --Tenmei (talk) 01:16, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi

Do you want a colourful signature? If you want I can give you my welcome template. Chubbennaitor 17:00, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip off. I have made the changes you noted. Please feel free to include any new Australian military history articles you created to the new article list. Thanks again. Hossen27 (talk) 05:06, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Riddles

1st. Correct 2nd. Which one 3rd. Correct 4th. Read the hole question

Thanks for noticing them as you are the 4th person to do so. I hope that it spreads thoughts. Chubbennaitor 16:12, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Yep, all you need to do is add you name to the list. Welcome aboard! Nick Dowling (talk) 11:50, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
