Hi. It may be difficult for me to find a definate reference to that list, but the problem is that I've been to that museum last October, and if needed, i can provide photographs for evidence. regards. 尼古拉叶若夫 (talk) 03:03, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your note. Interpreting photographs requires original research, so they are not acceptable as refs. You need to find a published ref with the list of aircraft to add new aircraft to the list. - Ahunt (talk) 18:58, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Original Barnstar
Many thanks, 尼古拉叶若夫, for your amazing start on PLA armoured divisions and your amazing template listing all the various different types of division!! Thank you so much!! Buckshot06 (talk) 16:28, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please feel free to amend and correct my starting effort, List of divisions of the People's Liberation Army. Many thanks again!! Buckshot06 (talk) 16:29, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

-Many thanks, but I have to admit that I don't have the ability to just correct all those entries -- the fact is, there are over 650 divisions and about 80 corps/armies through out the history of People's Liberation Army....

If you read some of my entries, it may inspire you to amend yours.

No need for (People's Republic of China) when name is unique[edit]

Thanks for all your continuing hard work on PLA formations - we really do appreciate it. But when the name is unique, like for example the 2nd Garrison Division of Nanjing Military Region (People's Republic of China) - there is no other military formation in the world that has that name. In these cases you do not need to add (People's Republic of China) to the name. 2nd Garrison Division of Nanjing Military Region is ok. The detailed rule is at WP:MILMOS#UNITNAME. It is required for say, 1st Armoured Brigade, or 37th Division, but not for formations with unique titles. Kind regards and many thanks for your hard work, Buckshot06 (talk) 16:42, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This may need to be 11th Corps (People's Republic of China). But I have run out of the information available to me on it. Do you have any more information you can add? Buckshot06 (talk) 10:18, 18 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Nikolai!! I've been looking at your usual source, http://www.360doc.com/content/06/1128/16/13961_275728.shtml. Am I correct in G-translating that the 8th Corps was disestablished in 1949, the 7th Corps in 1951, the 3rd, 4th, 10th, and 17th in 1952, the 18th became the Tibet Military Region in 1952, and the 19th was also disestablished in 1952, and the 2nd and 6th in 1953? Buckshot06 (talk) 05:05, 21 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. But 17th and 19th Corps were reactivated in the 1960s and 1970s, respectively. 05:19, 21 July 2017 (UTC)Nikolai Ezhov
Ah great. What about the the 29th Corps disestablished in 1950 (Nov. 18, 1950) and the 30th Corps that same year (January 16, 1950)? Correct? Buckshot06 (talk) 05:20, 21 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
29th Army Corps was reactivated in 1970s and disbanded in 1985. 30th never reactivated. 13:55, 21 July 2017 (UTC)Nikolai Ezhov
29th Army Corps and 17th Army Corps are done. 18:16, 21 July 2017 (UTC)Nikolai Ezhov
Thanks Nikolai. Standardizing on (People's Republic of China) aligns with the MILHIST standard. Could you add some text about 17th Corps and its divisions to Wuhan Incident? I would but I'm afraid of making mistakes. Please, if you do, carefully reference what you add with footnotes. Thanks!! Buckshot06 (talk) 23:27, 21 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thankyou Nikolai. My next ask would be 31st (II)/49th (II), when you've got some time to spare. Buckshot06 (talk) 03:06, 8 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for doing the 8th Division!! Buckshot06 (talk) 05:49, 8 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Done now. 16:45, 8 August 2017 (UTC)Nikolai Ezhov
Many thanks Nikolai. I do understand that your expertise is focused on Northern units, but at 13th Group Army we have an unfortunate situation where neither 37th Division or 149th Motorized Infantry Division (People's Republic of China) have articles, and an unfortunate redirect to 149th Division (I Formation) still exists. Might it be possible to put 149th (II), and/or 37th, on your list to do as well? Many thanks again for all your hard work - ogromnoe spasibo!! Buckshot06 (talk) 22:29, 8 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Done...09:39, 9 August 2017 (UTC)Nikolai Ezhov
Many thanks Nikolai. The only other thing I would ask is, once I go through the active-force divisions as of just before the 2017 redesignations, there may be one or two first-line Group Army divisions that are still missing. Please feel free to take a break for a month or two, and I'll come up with a list - with your monumental amount of work on the divisions, there can't be many more than 10 remaining - and then we can think about finishing those. Meanwhile I will at least get all the new Group Armies at their new designations or redirects established - that's just a matter of gruntwork, as opposed to specialist knowledge. I might say, it's quite clear you're operating with more data than in the webpages you cite - where did you get it from? Kind regards Buckshot06 (talk) 10:15, 9 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
About the first-line divisions: I didn't do them because their history could [can] be very complicate[d]. In fact I'm lacking first hand sources for most of these divisions (except for 63rd Army (People's Republic of China) and 64th Army (People's Republic of China) and their divisions, on which I have detailed, official history books). I'm afraid that I would omit some important details on them. About the source: Some details are "common sense" (e.g. full scale unit redesignations in 1948-49 and 1969;All infantry divisions redesignated as Army Divisions in April 1960), some came from scattered figures, tables and threads which are not easy to quote, some came from "indirect evidence", some could be "too direct" to list, and some times... I'm just too lazy to quote them all...10:37, 9 August 2017 (UTC)Nikolai Ezhov
OK, just assume I know *nothing* about the subject; could we start with the 'common sense' details? I only know about the 1949 redesignations because of your constant references to the 1949 document and Whiting 1972; can you tell me about the major 1969 redesignations, background, and sources where I might verify this? This is because in nigh-on 20 years of looking at the PLA order of battle (not constantly, but on and off) this is the first I've heard of a major 1969 redesignation ; the big one I was aware of was the 1985 change to "group armies". Basically as a New Zealander the information is a lot less accessible that to someone in Moscow (or whereever you are). Please forgive me my assumption that you might wish to have your English corrected in the [square brackets] above. Kind regards Buckshot06 (talk) 11:46, 9 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

In August to December 1969:

  • All PLA divisions and regiments were re-designated in "three-by-three" manner. I.e., a n-th Corps would composed of 3*n-2th divisions, 3*n-1th divisions and 3*nth divisions. So as infantry regiments in army divisions. For example, PLA 60th Army Corps was composed of 178th, 179th and 181st Army Divisions before December 1969, and after December 1969, 181st Army Division had to be redesignated as 180th Army Division in order to make the corps "three-by-three". All three infantry regiments in 181th Division were also redesignated. The same thing also happened on 28th Division of 69th Army Corps(Redesignated as 205th), 73rd Army Division of 23rd Army Corps(redesignated as 68th), 49th Army Division of 11th Army Corps(redesignated as 31st), 33rd Army Division of 26th Army Corps(redesignated as 76th) (meanwhile the 76th Army Division redesignated as 88th after detached from the army corps), 3rd Army Division of Xinjiang Military Region and 7th Army Division of 1st Army Corps exchanged designations, etc etc.
  • All garrison divisions were redesignated by Military Region. E.g., 2nd Garrison Division was redesignated as 2nd Garrison Division of Shenyang Military Region; 32nd Garrison Division became 1st Garrison Division of Lanzhou Military Region, etc etc.
  • All artillery/anti-aircraft artillery regiments in Army Divisions and Army Corps dropped their designation number. E.g., 392nd Artillery Regiment became Artillery Regiment, 112th Army Division; 88th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment became Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment, 63rd Army Corps.
  • All tank regiments were redesignated. Tank regiments in tank divisions were resequenced by 4 (by 2 before). E.g., before 1969 there were 5th and 6th Tank Regiments in 3rd Tank Division, and after 1969 there were 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th. All independent tank regiments were redesignated by Military Region. E.g., 11th Independent Tank Regiment was redesignated as 2nd Independent Tank Regiment of Beijing Military Region. All tank regiments in army divisions dropped their designation number (e.g. 329th Tank Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment of 124th Army Division was redesignated as Tank Regiment, 124th Army Division).
  • Many designations (e.g., Cavalry Divisions, Tank Self-Propelled Artillery Regiments) were abolished.

Most of these changes maintained until now, except the 181st Army Division. All soldiers of the division disliked their new designation, the 180th, since 180th Division was the only PVA division destroyed in the Korean War, and maybe the only PLA division destroyed on the battlefield since 1946. So in 1985 the 180th Army Division was redesignated as 181st Infantry Division, before it finally became 181st Armed Police Mobile Division in 1996.

This is what I can recall by now. 13:04, 9 August 2017 (UTC)Nikolai Ezhov

By the way, the Group Army is a pretty weird and confusing translation to the Chinese word "集团军". "集团军", in PLA terms, is used to describe the formation of "Army" in Soviet/Western armies, while "军" is used to describe "Corps". When the PLA ground force transformed to 24 "集团军"s in 1985, they were built to match Combined Arms Armies of the Soviet Army. However, Chinese official media (e.g. Xinhua) chose "Group Army" as the translation of "集团军", while the PLA uses "Army" or, sometimes, "Combined Corps". Personnally I prefer "Army" because it is most accurate and least confusing. 14:40, 9 August 2017 (UTC)Nikolai Ezhov

PLA military terms:

Formation in English Translated to (Simp.)Chinese The very same formation in Chinese How Chinese media translate them
XX Division Division
XXX Corps Army
XXXX Army 集团军 集团军 Group Army/Army/Combined Corps
XXXXX Army Group 集团军群 兵团/集团军群 Army Group

ROC Army military terms:

Formation in English Translated to (Trad.)Chinese The very same formation in Chinese How Taiwanese media translate them
XX Division Division
XXX Corps Army
XXXX Army 軍團 軍團 Corps/Corps Army/Army Corps
XXXXX Army Group 集團軍 集團軍 Group Army

The PLA reform in 1985 was a big and famous one. But there are also smaller ones. Personnally I rank the significancy of PLA military reform as:

2016-17 > 1985 > 1955 > 1969 > 1998 > 1957 > 1976 > 1961 >2003. 15:32, 9 August 2017 (UTC)Nikolai Ezhov

Many thanks Nikolai, especially for the 1969 data. Can you fill in the 1955 data? Wanted to quickly thank you as I rushed out. I am acutely aware of the problem with translating corps/"Group Army" and then the Army Groups/Armies of the Korean War period. Whitson 1972 translates for example 22nd Army as an army, while the U.S. contemporary writers of the Korean period give for example "XIII Army Group". The reason I raise these two sources is because Wikipedia's rules prioritise WP:Verifiable *English* language sources first. I am not sure what to do, and I am tempted to renumber all your Army Groups in Roman numerals to match the main Eng source. Let's have a discussion about this, please, before we create or move any more pages. Buckshot06 (talk) 20:19, 9 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

In 1955 People's Liberation Army started conscription (before that it is basing on voluntary). The PLA was divided to five main services:

Among them, first four of which were collectively called the National Defense Force(Chinese: 国防军).

Most of the army/ADF formations issued its new TO&E that year, mostly with the appendix of "national defense force" after their name: e.g., Army Heavy Division of National Defense Force 55 (e.g. 112th), Army Light Division of National Defense Force 55 (e.g. 31st), Army Cavalry Division of National Defense Force 55 (e.g. 1st), Army Tank Division of National Defense Fore 55 (e.g. 3rd), Air Defense Force Air Defense Division of National Defense Force (e.g. 1st), Air Defense Force Anti-Aircraft Artillery Division of National Defense Force, etc, etc.

The PLA underwent "total Sovietalization" in 1955. The PLA started to adopt a Ranking System. New types of division basing on Soviet origin, e.g. a Mechanized Division (1st), Reserve Divisions(e.g. 1st Reserve Division (People's Republic of China)) and Machine-gun Artillery Divisions(e.g. 3rd) were organized. All PLA military Doctrines, Field Manuals, even Miltary glossary and terms, were re-writen basing on Soviet Army standard.

PLA reorganized and renamed its Military Regions.

  • Before 1955 there were 6 major MRs: Northeastern(Chinese: 东北军区), Northern China(Chinese: 华北军区), Northwestern(Chinese: 西北军区), Eastern China(Chinese: 华东军区), Middle-South(Chinese: 中南军区) and Southwest(Chinese: 西南军区).
  • After 1955 there were 12 major MRs: Shenyang, Beijing, Jinan, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Chengdu, Kunming, Lanzhou, Inner Mongolia, Tibet, Xinjiang. In 1956 Fuzhou MR was activated. All familiar faces, right?

The PLA Navy: 3 major fleets were organized this year:

I'm not familiar with the PLAAF, which should also be reformed in 1955.

The 1955 Military Reform was short-lived. In 1957 Military Reform two main services (existed for only 2 years) were disestablished:

  • Air Defense Force was merged into the Air Force;
  • Public Security Force disestablished as a main service and became Public Security Troops.

The term "国防军"(National Defense Force) was then disused. (Now the word "国防军" in Chinese is basically referring to Wehrmacht.) The "total Sovietalization" doctrine was abolished in the "Anti-Dogmatism Movement" when Liu Bocheng was criticized and lost power. Reserve Divisions disbanded, Machine-gun Artillery Divisions renamed, Mechanized Division reorganized. Military doctrine again re-writen to a more "Chinese-style" People's war doctrine.

About the terms on PLA formations, my suggestion is to use the corresponding "original English" (listed above in tables) terms, and forget all the others. 03:00, 10 August 2017 (UTC)Nikolai Ezhov

Thanks again Nikolai. Wikipedia's rules prioritise WP:Verifiable *English* language sources first. For the ones you've listed as Army Groups in the template, we can go with Whiting 1972 - armies - or the Korean War U.S. Army histories - Army Groups. Now, the harder thing. All this 1969 and 1955 data should be in the text of People's Liberation Army etc. Can you provide WP:Verifiable sources for it in Russian or Chinese, preferably *books*, not webpages? Buckshot06 (talk) 07:35, 10 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That could be hard. PLA have a tradition of maintaining secrecy, All of these I've mentioned above are not allowed to be published in Mainland China, and most of the Official military history works are not allowed to be acquired by the public. Even though these secrecy regulations are poorly conducted, (for example, one copy of the Official History of PLA 64th Army is available in a public library; some local chorographies forget to replace the unit designation with code numbers, etc,) it is still impossible to find any openly-published books about these. Some details could be backed with chorographies, but most of them not; I have some official PLA Air Defense Force history books which can back some pages about PLAADF divisions (e.g., 1st Antiaircraft Artillery Division (People's Republic of China) and more to be created). These books and chorographies are no doubt never translated into English or Russian, and I wonder if there were any English sources ever knew there was once an Air Defense Force in the PLA.

Russian Source can be worse than English ones. For example, the Russian even don't know which PLA formations participated in Sino-Soviet border conflict until now! They still believe that a non-exist "PLA 24th Infantry Regiment"(see [this]) participated in the March 15 conflict; on the other hand, even though I can list the exact PLA Order of Battle, I still can't get a booked source for that.

08:19, 10 August 2017 (UTC)Nikolai Ezhov

--PLA units participated in operations in Damansky area on March 15, 1969:

  • 201st Infantry Regiment, 67th Army Division of 23rd Army Corps;
  • 1st Battalion, 217th Infantry Regiment, 73rd Army Division of 23rd Army Corps;
  • Anti-Aircraft Machine-gun Company, 48th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment, 23rd Army Corps;
  • 2nd Battalion, 413th Anti-Tank Artillery Regiment of 31st Artillery Division;
  • 2nd Battalion, 20th Artillery Regiment of 7th Artillery Division;
  • 2nd Battalion, 620th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment of 62nd Artillery Division;
  • Reconnaissance Group, temporarily organized with reconnaissance elements from several army divisions and corps in Shenyang Military Region;
  • Border Troops from Heilongjiang Provincial Military District.

OK, English sources definitely do exist (the question is how much they cover). See https://www.rand.org/content/dam/rand/pubs/conf_proceedings/CF160/CF160.ch3.pdf, page 59. I have found William W. Witson, but need to search out Harvey W. Nelson, Samuel B. Griffin, and John Gittings. Also, most highly recommended is Harlan Jencks, From Muskets to Missiles: Politics and Professionalism in the Chinese Army, 1945–1981. Buckshot06 (talk) 21:14, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, just letting you know this has been tagged for several issues. Can you look it over? Thanks, Boleyn (talk) 08:56, 26 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Can you improve this reference?[edit]

《四川省志·军事志》 - needs a full reference with translated Mandarin title in brackets like "Yao Jun, ed., Zhongguo hangkong shi [A History of China's Aviation], Zhengzhou, Dajia Publishers, September 1998, p. 664, 666". Cheers Buckshot06 (talk) 11:55, 28 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello man, I've improved the reference in three different pages: the 3rd, 4th and 5th Reserve Divisions. There should be more pages that refer to it but I can't recall all of them now.

The reference now writes as:

  • Codification Committee of the Annals of Sichuan Province, Sichuan Shengzhi Junshizhi [Annals of Sichuan Province - Military Annals], Chengdu, Sichuan People's Publishing House, 1999, p.85

An article you recently created, 189th Combined Arms Brigade (People's Republic of China), does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. Congratulations, and thank you for helping expand the scope of Wikipedia! We hope you will continue making quality contributions.

The article has been assessed as Stub-Class, which is recorded on its talk page. It is commonplace for new articles to start out as stubs and then attain higher grades as they develop over time. You may like to take a look at the grading scheme to see how you can improve the article.

Since you have made at least 10 edits over more than four days, you can now create articles yourself without posting a request. However, you may continue submitting work to Articles for creation if you prefer.

If you have any questions, you are welcome to ask at the help desk. Once you have made at least 10 edits and had an account for at least four days, you will have the option to create articles yourself without posting a request to Articles for creation.

If you would like to help us improve this process, please consider leaving us some feedback.

Thanks again, and happy editing!

An article you recently created, 66th Division (1st Formation)(People's Republic of China), is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). Hello Fram.
There are solid evidence from three pieces of local chronicles (from Fengxiang, Fufeng and Baoji County, respectively) proved that the division did once exist. These sources have been given in the Reference part of the article. I don't think this meets the standard of deletion. Nikolai Ezhov 09:30, 28 July 2022 (UTC)

Hello, 尼古拉叶若夫

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username Hughesdarren, and I thank you for your contributions.

I wanted to let you know, however, that I've proposed an article that you started, Reserve Infantry Division of Weinan, for deletion because it meets one or more of our deletion criteria, and I don't think that it is suitable for inclusion in the encyclopedia. The particular issue can be found in the notice that is now visible at the top of the article.

If you wish to contest the deletion:

  1. Edit the page
  2. Remove the text that looks like this: {{proposed deletion/dated...}}
  3. Click the Publish changes button.

If you object to the article's deletion, please remember to explain why you think the article should be kept on the article's talk page and improve the page to address the issues raised in the deletion notice. Otherwise, it may be deleted later by other means.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Hughesdarren}}. And remember to sign your reply with ~~~~. Thanks!

Hello @Hughesdarren:
I don't think "only existed for 2 years" is a good point for deleting this.
Many units in the military history exists for even shorter time, e.g. the Panzer Division Müncheberg which only existed for 2 months, and still deserve a page. Nikolai Ezhov 09:35, 28 July 2022 (UTC)

Reserve Infantry Division of Fuxin[edit]

Hey! Just wanted to check to see if you translated this page from Chinese Wikipedia, and if so, which one, so that it can be attributed. Nice work. Ovinus (talk) 16:31, 28 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. This page did not come from Chinese Wikipedia. Although mainly based on Chinese sources, most of my edits are on enWiki. Regards. Nikolai Ezhov 11:32, 30 July 2022 (UTC)

An article you recently created, Reserve Infantry Division of Wuwei, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Articles being regraded as drafts[edit]

Hi 尼古拉叶若夫, I think you're doing good work, but you need to be a bit more careful with references as your editing reputation is declining with all these article being regraded as drafts.

Add new divisions first and only to List of divisions of the People's Liberation Army, with all references carefully translated into English - there are several references on that page which show how the formatting works. Add each division's information not to a separate article, but to a in-line entry in the main page, something like List of British divisions in World War II - more like [[1]] for a start, with all your text but all the references inserted properly.

Much better idea I think. Buckshot06 (talk) 16:07, 11 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
