Because if division by zero is allowed, then all numbers are equal.

If your $\Delta =0$, then $1=0\times \Delta =0\times 0=0$. Otherwise, begin with the observation that $0^{2}=0$. Then ${\frac {1}{\Delta ^{2}}}=0^{2}=0={\frac {1}{\Delta }}$, so $\Delta ^{2}=\Delta$. Dividing by $\Delta$ gives $\Delta =1$, so $1=0\times \Delta =0\times 1=0$. Either way, $1=0$. Then if $a,b$ are any two numbers, then $a-b=(a-b)\times 1=0$, so $a-b=(a-b)\times 1=0$, so $a=b$. Q.E.D.
