The Isolotto di San Martino' is a very small island of 16,000 square meters, located in the municipality of Monte di Procida which is accessed through a narrow tunnel and a pier.

History[edit]

Probably in the past the islet was connected to Monte di Procida constituting a promontory, which in 1488 broke away due to some geological event not precisely determined (presumably a tsunami due to frequent telluric movements in the Phlegraean area).

From 1917, however, it was used as an industrial plant for testing torpedoes as part of the Baia torpedo factory.

In 1939, however, the bridge and tunnel connecting the rock to the mainland were mined.

In the 1960s the islet, granted on a fixed-term basis to a private individual, became a tourist attraction, offering tourists the opportunity to admire historical finds and a seabed to explore.

In 2019, after about 10 years of total abandonment, the bridge that connected the islet to the mainland also collapsed due to strong sea storms.

By 2023, all parts of the bridge have been lost.

Geological conformation[edit]

The islet is made up of a material typical of the Campi Flegrei: pozzolana, the extraction of which caused a reduction in height of 16 metres.
