Hi! I am Dr. Thomas Hedberg, Jr., a Mechanical Engineer in the Systems Integration Division of the Engineering Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). I am currently the Program Manager of the NIST Model-Based Enterprise program and the Co-Leader of the NIST Smart Manufacturing Systems Test Bed. My current research focus is in the areas of digital-product design, smart-manufacturing systems, and product-lifecycle management. Prior to joining NIST, I was a Senior Mechanical Engineer and Technical Lead of the Model-Based Enterprise (MBE) group at Honeywell Aerospace. I, with a team of others, developed a strategy and implementation of MBE in Honeywell’s aerospace operations. I am also a Voting Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Y14.37[1], Y14.41[2], and Y14.47[3] standards from the ASME Y14 suite of standards and the technical steering group chair of the ASME MBE Committee.

I earned a B.S. in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from Purdue University, a M.Eng. in Engineering Management with a concentration on Systems Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University, and a Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. I am also a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the States of Arizona and Maryland.
