Sir Alfred Chatterton (10 October 1866-26 July 1958) was a British engineer who started his career as professor of engineering in Madras and went on to be director of industries in Madras and later in the Mysore State and also served as a member of the Indian Industrial Commission.[1]

Family and early life[edit]

Alfred Chatterton was born on 10 October 1866,[1] the eldest son of John Henry Chatterton. From 1883 to 1884 he studied at the Finsbury Technical College, and from 1885 to 1887 at the Central Technical College, South Kensington.[2] He obtained a B.Sc. degree[1]. In 1895 he married Helen Scott, the second daughter of the Henry Borthistle of Wexford. Helen Scott died in 1897. Then in 1901 he married Alice Gertrude, daughter of William Herbert Wilson.[2]
