How can Social Networking currently be used in Education and in the future?

Social Networking can be a beneficial tool in the classroom relating to technology. Currently, there are a multitude of avenues available in education through Social Networking for students and their parents or guardians. Presently as well as scientists predict in the future, Social Networking is supposed to have a huge influence on education. However, some sources say that Social Networking is growing fast and some educators might allow Social Networking while others will prohibit Social Networking in school systems. There are various amounts of Social Networking websites that relate to Education: Facebook, Twitter, Ovoo, Skype, Flicker, Tumblr, LiveJournal, Podcasts, and Linked In. Social Networking is advancing every day and from a personal standpoint I use Facebook and Twitter every day and there is no reason why Social Networking cannot be applied to schooling.
First off, relating to college acceptance, colleges can hack into Facebook’s and sees pictures of their applicants which can be useful yet this action can potentially hurt the applicant. For example, if there are pictures on Facebook with a college applicant drinking, doing drugs or displaying risky behavior than the college could double think one’s acceptance. Colleges do this to see who they want to represent them on their campus. Also, when students graduate from high school or college he or she can keep in touch their old teachers and friends them which is good. Friending teachers on Facebook after you left the school can be worthwhile just to let them know how you are doing every once in a while or if s/he will have any job leads for you in the future. However, you are exposing your personal life to your teacher who knows you on an educational level not a buddy-buddy level. There are benefits to social media as well as negative aspects.

Next, Social Networking can impact students positively and I would start using Social Networking with students once he or she is able to read. Facebook is one Social Network that can be used on an education level to stay in touch with students and their parents/guardians. There are so many ways that Facebook could help students. For instance, if one student forgets what chapter the homework is on, he or she can write on that person’s wall or message. Another scenario could be if a group project was assigned and all the students were discussing times to meet and who was going to do what on the project, they could use Facebook messenger to communicate privately. Likewise, if the teacher assigned a project to create a Facebook from a character in the book he or she was reading, kids would love this project because it applies to their life. Moreover, students can access Wikispaces to do projects and have their creations shared with world. In addition, students can friend their classmates and ask them questions if they are struggling in the class. Additionally, I could (if this was ever approved) send YouTube videos to my class and post the homework on a class group that I made on Facebook i.e. Ms. Millett 6th Grade Class 2011 could be the possible group name. Expanding on that idea, I could write a wall post for the homework each day. Facebook could help the parents as well. I could send out messages/inbox with the newsletter or asking for chaperones. Also, I would make a second group for that class’s parents with questions, comments or concerns. This would be useful because I check Facebook more than my email.
One negative aspect of Social Networking is that there can be potential cyber-bullying that takes place on these sites especially Facebook. Thus, the school becomes involved, interfering with the situation, and then the principal deals with the issue that occurred the night before online the next day. I know that some schools have Facebook pages that you can like to get updates from that which is helpful in some ways.

Another popular Social Networking site is Twitter. As a teacher I could tweet homework or tweet important messages or reminders. I could post pictures about something we discussed in class, projects, student work, or pictures of our class field trips. I could ask for all the students to follow me on Twitter along with their parents or make a joint account just to incorporate as much technology in the classroom as possible. I could also tweet to the parents when I need volunteers in the classroom for holiday parties or a pair of hands.

Thirdly, students could use Ovoo or Skype to contact me. I could set up virtual office hours like a college professor. I could make an account on Skype give my students my name and then have them Skype chat me or if we missed class due to a snow day I could send out a message or make the status on Skype- test postponed. Correspondingly, my classroom could network with other elementary schools via Podcasts. Podcasts site are one way to share information in an educational and informative way by viewing how others are learning or what projects they did. One more advantage of Skype is that maybe one day we could meet our pen-pals from a different country.

All the Social Networking websites I discussed are available now to every educator but I do not know if every educator knows how to use or work them, or if the school policies/ rules will not let them. Technology in schools is valuable for students learning and the students will be more engaged to learn if he or she is using technology, since technology influences every part of this generation’s life. In the next ten years, Social Networking will become more prevalent and maybe one day there will be one or more Social Networking sites encompassing education as a whole. The future of Social Networking is a little unpredictable but will flourish eventually due the demand. For instance, maybe there could be a Social Network site with game based learning involved. On the contrary, there is a debate going on about if Social Networking in schools has a constructive or destructive impact on the children. I believe Social Networking in education is overall advantageous if used properly. Finally, at my school we use Edmodo which is a little glimpse of social media.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ TECHNOLOGY LESSON PLAN

Teacher: Suzanne Millett

Grade: 3

Date: October 23, 2011

Content Area: English Language Arts: Language

Curriculum Frameworks: English Language Arts: Language

Standard 5: Structure and Origins of Modern English. Grades 3-4 5.6 Identify the four basic parts of speech (adjective, noun, verb, and adverb). Objectives: Student will be able to classify and recognize nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Students will be able to use nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs correctly in their writing and on assessments.

Technology Integrated in the Lesson Plan: Interactive Educational Game Websites, YouTube, Videos, PowerPoint Presentation on Smart Board

Prior Knowledge: The students will probably have been exposed to the parts of speech or some of the parts of speech in the 2nd grade but not as in depth. The students have probably seen proper nouns in their everyday lives such as Target, Centerville Elementary School or Mr. Jones without knowing it. In addition, the students seeing different things and people every day as well as going to different places indirectly realizing that these are nouns and that nouns surround them constantly. The same goes for adjectives, adverbs and verbs. The students used the parts of speech in their everyday methods of communication: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Also, the students could also notice that all parts of the classroom that are labeled are nouns, and we have posters hanging up in classroom dealing with parts of speech. This lesson will relate to our literacy anthologies stories for the week and before we start reading the story of the week; the class will depict what words “they think” are what parts of speech as a pretest individually on a worksheet provided.

Materials: Smart Board/Projector Computer with Internet Rug Pointer Wand Worksheets Whiteboard/ Whiteboard Markers Cup of Sticks/Popsicle Sticks

Procedures: Setting It Up: (3 minutes) After the pretest the students took at their seats, they will be asked to come join me at the rug. While the students are walking over to the rug, I will be getting the PowerPoint (lesson) put up on the Smart Board. Then I will make sure the worksheets that the students are going to fill out after the lesson are next to the table where the computer is, that way I can hand them out directly after the lesson is over for independent practice. I will wait for the children to be completely silent and then I will introduce and start the lesson. Modeling/Group Practice (30 minutes) a.I will go through my PowerPoint I created on Parts of Speech. Firstly, I will start with the first slide of the PowerPoint. I will ask the students what they know about a noun, verb, adjective or adverb. My hook will be to make all the students stand up, find someone to shake hands with and then give them a compliment. After that is completed I will have all the students sit back down. Next, I will have two students volunteer to come up to the front of the classroom. I will have them say their names and point out that student A i.e. “Sarah” and student B i.e. “Pat” are nouns and they are people which demonstrates part of the definition of a noun. Then I will have them shake hands. I will ask the rest of the class if shaking hands is an action or not. Furthermore, I will introduce verbs that way and hopefully the compliment the students said to each other includes an adjective or adverb which will conclude my lead in. The students will clap for the two volunteers. b. I will ask the students to look at the pictures on the first slide and then see if they can tell me what each picture is. We will discuss each picture. One the Whiteboard next to the Smart Board I will write down the four parts of speech will be learning. c. Moving on, I first read the definition of a noun and then have the students read the definition of a noun with me a second time. I will have the students raise their hands if they have any examples of nouns he or she would like to share. Then, the students will watch the School House Rock Video on Nouns and then we will play the Noun Dunk game. I will call Sticks and pick students to come up and play the game one by one. After 10 turns we will move onto the Verb slide. d. Moreover, I will first read the definition of a verb and then have the students read the definition of a verb with me a second time. I will have all the students stand up, run in place, then jump in place, then sit down demonstrating verbs. The students will then watch the School House Rock Video on Verbs and then play with interactive verb game on the Smart Board. I will use the same method of picking sticks to see if the students can pop the right (verbs) that are balloons. Once I believe everyone understands I will move onto the adjective slide. e. For the adjective slide, I will read the definition of an adjective and then have the students read the definition of an adjective with me. We will read all the words on the adjectives photo as a class. Then I will proceed to show them the School House Rock Video on Adjectives and then have them play the interactive game dealing with adjectives. I will pick on student to start the insect/fly eating game and then that girl or boy will have to pick a different gender to do the next one. f. Moving on, I will finish the last part of speech with adverbs since adverbs seems to give a lot of people trouble. I will read the definition of an adverb and then have the students read the definition of an adverb with me. I will ask them to raise their hand if they know of an adverb. Just like the pattern, we will watch the School House Rock Video on Adverbs and then play the interactive game which includes adverbs. I will pick the students who birthdays are approaching to come up and answer the questions. g. I will wrap up this lesson by doing a review game with all the students. The game is a collaboration of all the parts of speech and every student will get a turn. h. I will then pass out the worksheet. The worksheet will consist of a four column chart and the students will need to go back and complete this based on the words in their story for the week and then if they have extra time, add nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs that are used in the classroom daily.

Independent Practice (10 minutes)

The students will go back to their seats to complete the worksheet. The worksheet is a four column chart and the students will need to go back and complete this worksheet based on the words in their story for the week and classify them as a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb. If the students have extra time, then they will add to the worksheet nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs that are used in the classroom daily.

Closure (10 minutes) Go over worksheet after the 10 minutes that the students had to work on it. I will choose students randomly to go over the worksheet. Once we have corrected the worksheet I will make the students put it in their take home folders. Informal Assessment/Formal Assessment Informal Assessment: I will walk around the room and observe the students while they are completely the worksheet. Formal Assessment: I will make another worksheet on parts of speech for the next day and then have the students complete this worksheet for morning work and have them pass the worksheet in to me when they are done. I will grade this worksheet for comprehension and to see who needs more practice or if the class needs clarification I will also make have them make a list of nouns and verbs they observe at their house for homework. Additionally, I could make them identify their spelling words one night for homework to categorize the spelling words into the correct part of speech.

Accommodations: For students with an IEP or a 504 Plan I could work with them one on one to complete the worksheet or a paraprofessional could help them, and break down the definitions. I could modify their homework to one night making a list of nouns in their house and the next night making a list of verbs etc., so that student does not feel overwhelmed. I could also make the worksheets easier and more organized for these students. Plus, I could email their parents the slideshow so their parents can help them on the homework.

Home/School Connection: The homework I am assigning. The parents will also be aware of what their children are learning from the newsletter I sent home the Friday before. Personal Reflection: Since I did not actually do this lesson I am not sure how this lesson will go but I hope everything goes smoothly. Hopefully I did not use too much technology. I feel like the students will be extremely engaged in this lesson because it is interactive and fun. I am confident that this lesson will benefit students and enhance their education.
