Previous studies of problem debtors in the United States (O'Guinn and Faber 1989; Sullivan et a1. 1989; Caplovitz 1974) and in Great Britain (Parker 1990; Ford 1988) have noted some of the negative consequences associated with indebtedness. They include anxiety, ill health, marital instability, unemployment, social isolation, stigmatization, dysfunctional relations, and material deprivation.
