Rick Schmidlin (October 22, 1954) is a producer/director/silent film scholar, whose work has focused on restorations, reconstructions and documentaries.
Films[edit]
Schmidlin produced the films The Doors: Live at the Hollywood Bowl [1] and The Doors:The Soft Parade - A Retrospective (1991).[2] In 1986 he was an assistant producer on David Cronenberg's The Fly. [3] He also re-edited the Elvis Presley concert film Elvis: That's the Way It Is. [4]
Schmidlin also worked on restoring the Erich von Stroheim film Greed and Orson Welles' film Touch of Evil. [5]
Awards[edit]
Schmidlin has won several awards for his work in restoring classic films. He received the Special Award from the New York Film Critics Circle, a Special Citation from the National Society of Film Critics, and a Special Citation from LA Film Critics Association for his work on Touch of Evil. [6][7][8] For his work restoring Greed he won a Special Citation from the LA Film Critics Association.[9]

Early Days and Hollywood
Rick Schmidlin lived in Wayne New Jersey from 1954-1959. His parents Majorie and Albert Schmidlin moved to Maywood , New Jersey and he lived there to 1969. His family then moved to Lake Wallenpaupack in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania. In 1970 Rick lived on The Northen Cheyenne Indian Reservation in Lame Deer Montana. It was there that he attended The Busby School for Indian Children. He was the only non native American in his class. Later in 1970 he moved back to Pennsylvania and resided until he left for Hollywood. Rick hitch hiked across America in three and a half days to Hollywood in 1975. Rick lived on the Sunset Strip and became friends with Joe Cocker and John Entwhistle from The Who. In the later 1970's Rick became a member of the L.A.Punk Rock scene and met his mentor Ray Manzarek of The Doors. The two became best friends and would work the next twenty years together on various projects. [edit]Film
During 1978 Rick moved to Albany, New York to work in educational cable TV as lighting tech. In the 1980's Rick produced many long form and special music video's for The Doors. During 1987 Rick was personal assistant to Frank Zappa, helping him develop his video enterprise. From 1987-1992 Rick created ‘Easyriders Video Magazine the first subscription based video publication and produced, directed and wrote 13 hour-long Harley Davidson videos. Rick produced and directed two documentaries on the breaking of the motorcycle land speed record (322 mph) at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, narrated by Peter Fonda.In 1996 Rick produced The Third Mind narrated by Peter Coyote, which was the first original documentary ever commissioned for The Sundance Channel.In 1998 Rick produced the re-edit of Orson Welles Touch Of Evil which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and Toronto Film Festivals. Rick received special awards from The National Society of Film Critics, The New York Film Critics Circle, The Boston Society of Film Critic and The Los Angeles Film Critics Association for "scholarship and integrity. In 1999 Rick produced the reconstruction of the Erich von Stroheim 1924 classic Greed for Turner Entertainment and Turner Classic Movies. The American premier was at the Telluride Film Festival and the European premiere Venice Film Festival. Special presentation where at the Pordenone Silent Film Festival, Italy, The Berlin Film Festival and the Moscow International Film Festival. Rick received from The National Society of Film Critics their ‘Film Heritage Award’ and from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association a special award for a "meticulous reconstruction". In 2001 Rick Schmidlin produced a Special Theatrical Edition of Elvis, That's The Way It Is Special Edition for Turner Entertainment and Turner Classic Movie. This film was completely re-cut and remixed. Included in this new version are nine additional new musical performances and many personal moments of Elvis working with his band that have been never been seen before. It premièred in Memphis on August 12, at The Orpheum Theatre as the main theme of "Elvis Week 2000". Also in 2001 Rick produced the restoration for The Library on Congress and The National Park Services The Edison/Dickson Sound Test." This restoration of the 1994 film was partner with editor Walter Murch and financed by George Lucus. Rick is the only filmmaker to ever receive awards for two consecutive years from The National Society of Film Critics and The Los Angeles Film Critics Association. [edit]Present
