Margarete Kollisch; (born December 9, 1893 in Vienna; died October 11, 1979 in Staten Island in New York City); was an Austrian writer and poet who could pursue her artistic creation in the United States after emigrating in 1939.


Family[edit]

Margarete Kollisch was born to the lawyer Ignaz and Hermine (née Bunzl-Federn) Moller in Vienna. She studied philology at the University of Vienna. When she received her teaching certificate in 1917 and started working as a teacher, translator and journalist. She married the architect Otto Kollisch in 1923. They had three children: Stephan, Eva and Peter. Eva would later become a writer herself and professor for German, Comparative Literature and Women's Studies at the Sarah Lawrence College.

After their youngest son, Peter, was born in 1928 the family moved to Baden near Vienna.

Life and work[edit]

Eva Kollisch also went to great lengths to review and preserve her mother's work.
