Philip A. Harland is a professor of Humanities and Ancient History at York University in Toronto, Canada, specializing in social and cultural life in the Hellenistic and Roman worlds. Previously at Concordia University in Montreal (2001-2006), Harland has been lecturing at York University in the Humanities and History departments since 2006.
Harland's research focusses on the comparative study of groups or associations formed around occupational, familial, ethnic, and other connections, including Judeans in the Mediterranean diaspora. Harland has aimed, in part, to provide a more detailed understanding of the social and cultural milieux in which groups of Jesus-followers (early Christians) arose and developed in the first three centuries. His work employs methods and theories from the social sciences. Processes of ethnic and other identification have also been central to his studies, most recently considering immigrant groups (as attested in inscriptions) and Greek and Roman ethnic stereotypes and ethnic hierarchies (as witnessed in the literature). Harland also explores representations of familial, civic, and imperial violence in ancient narratives, including Greek novels, apocryphal gospels, and martyrdom accounts.
Harland has also produced a number of podcast series episodes (under the title Religions of the Ancient Mediterranena podcast) dealing with ancient history and particularly Judeans (Jews), Jesus-followers, and those who honoured other gods in the ancient Mediterranean world.[citation needed]
