Overcrowded classroom at polytechnic of Namibia

Lack of lecturing space at Polytechnic of Namibia[edit]

Classroom space at the polytechnic of Namibia is insufficient to cater for its almost 13 000 student population.[1]Students at the Polytechnic of Namibia’s main campus in Windhoek are unhappy over overcrowded lecturing classrooms at the same time lecture halls or classrooms don`t have ventilation because of broken air conditioners.[2]

Main cause of lack lecturing space at the institution[edit]

  • Most students seem to feel that Polytechnic introduces more new courses, while lack of lecturing spaces is already a serious issue to the existing courses.[3]
  • It was also highlighted that Polytechnic register more students than it can accommodate, and this has caused Polytechnic to have a limited classroom spaces.
  • Full-time students also pointed out that part-time and distance-learning students taking up the seats of full-time students.
  • Due to underfunding from government, the Polytechnic has found it difficult to develop and expand the institution while at the same time maintain current infrastructure
  • Tjama Tjivikua has also pointed that when the institution was created “it did not receive the proper budgetary consideration to create a holistic higher eduction infrastructure”.

Effects of lack lecturing classroom space[edit]

  • Students are sitting on steps in the lecture halls and some even stand outside due to lack of space.[4]
  • Some students also stated that they are disturbed by others pass-by.
  • Some lecture have also highlighted that its difficult to control an overcrowded classroom and give special attention.
